MNG00313 INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT
Assignment 2 – Article critique report
Due: Friday 8 January (Week 12)
Weighting: 40%
You are required to:
1. Research in order to find secondary sources on matters where
a relevance to
MNG00313 can be demonstrated
2. Prepare a report as detailed below (40% of total MNG00313
assessment)
The core task for this assessment is multi-faceted: Find at least
three (3) recent articles from
business publications or media (e.g. business journals,
newspapers, periodicals, Internet
contributions, TV reports, etc.) and/or academic journals that
relate to any one topic (or sub-
topic) of interest to you and covered in MNG00313. Note that
your selected articles must
relate to the same topic and the articles must be published after
1 January 2015. Further, it is
best if they do not come from the same source (e.g. a single
publication) or type of source
(e.g. a newspaper or website or academic journal). As a starting
point (but this is NOT
essential), a maximum of one (1) article may be in the
collection of articles posted to the
Assignment 1 pages in the MNG00313 MySCU webpages
(posted either by you or other
MNG00313 students).
Identify and apply any of the theories covered in MNG00313
that you believe would assist a
reader to understand the issues being discussed in the articles
you selected.
For the body of articles as a whole (not for each article
separately):
1. Within copyright restrictions, ensure you provide a link
(reference/url) to the
articles (DO NOT ATTACH copies of the material) in your
report.
2. Identify the theoretical issue covered in a topic of
MNG00313 that relates with
the most salience (relevance) to the contents of your selected
articles.
3. Provide examples of agreements, disagreements or coverage
disparities between
the contents of the articles and the contents of the chosen
MNG00313 topic coverage
in the MNG00313 Study Guide, Readings and textbook. To do
this, you need to
compare the articles' content with the content of the various
resources used in
MNG00313 and in that comparison, you should identify
agreements (similarities),
disagreements (differences) and disparities (where one source
mentions something and
the other does not).
4. Critique the articles. To do this you should at least:
• assess the significance of agreements, disagreements or
disparities identified in
the previous section. (Note: this is intended to assist you in
deciding which
articles to use in your assignment: you should choose those
articles with the most
significance in their agreement or disagreement with
MNG00313. Degree of
significance is a judgmental matter in this instance but you
could ask yourself
the ‘so what?’ question and if your answer is ‘I don’t know’
then it is likely that
2 | P a g e
the degree of significance is minor and so you should choose a
different article.
Similarly, if there are very large disparities between MNG00313
and the articles'
content you may need to assess whether the articles have
salience (relevance)
with respect to MNG00313).
• assess whether you are in a position to form an opinion on the
accuracy of the
content of the articles (for example, are sources of information
revealed in the
articles? Or is the author in a position to be trusted in respect to
this topic?)
• question if the articles’ coverage of the issues has been
balanced and
comprehensive enough to present useful information (more than
a
single perspective identified and presented)
• evaluate the worth of the articles to a decision maker who
must consider similar
issues in their respective roles (e.g. a potential employee
deciding whether to work
in a particular industry or company; an investor seeking to
evaluate investment
opportunities; a multinational corporation manager wanting to
make a resource
allocation decision; a citizen wishing to exercise her civic
rights; etc).
5. Limit your written report to a maximum of four (4) typed
pages (excluding cover
sheet (if used), contents list (if used), reference list (required).
Material submitted
beyond four pages will not be assessed. Written reports must be
submitted
electronically and please note that quality of presentation will
impact on your mark so
do not squeeze extra words into your 4 pages by reducing the
font below size 11 or by
using margins that are so small as to reduce the readability of
your report.
The structure of your report is at your discretion. However as a
guide you could use the
following format:
• Your name, SCU student ID number, unit code, unit name and
primary
(main) Topic to which the report refers.
• A brief Executive Summary (no more than 1/2 page of the
report’s four
pages)
• Table of Contents
• Written report – no longer than 4 pages, including your
introduction and
conclusion if applicable structured in a manner that helps the
reader
understand its content
• Reference List (Harvard Referencing)
To be successful in the assignment you need to do the
following:
• read widely and try to relate that reading to the content of
MNG00313
• make sure that you commence reading for this assignment at
the beginning of the
semester and keep up-to-date with your coverage of MNG00313
topics
• have a good understanding of the content of MNG00313
• make sure that you present your opinion in your answer with
respect to agreements,
disagreements or disparities between the articles and the content
of MNG00313
• provide reasons for your critique of the articles
• provide active (that is, currently operating) links to the
selected articles and also
ensure that your answers are succinct and professionally
presented
3 | P a g e
• in your written work, be certain to submit original work not
authored by any other
person; where you consider it useful to support your ideas with
reference to others’
work be careful to explicitly quote that work and to include a
properly cited reference
for each quoted source at the end of your assignment answer (in
the references)
• keep a copy of your submitted work.
In assessing the assignment, the marker will take into account
your performance in the
following areas:
• suitability of articles chosen (content relevance and standard
of discussion in the
articles will be important criteria)
• logical coherence of your discussion and
structure/organisation of content
• coverage of key issues
• conciseness and clarity
• level of understanding of course concepts
• relevance to theory (evidence that you have been able to
identify how MNG00313
theories relate to the articles - or should have been invoked by
the author/s of those
articles)
• extent of evidence presented in support of your opinion
presentation
• degree of effectiveness in conveying a message in the report
presentation
Refer over page for marking criteria to be used in this
assessment.

  • 13. MNG00313 INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT Assignment 2 – Article critique report Due: Friday 8 January (Week 12) Weighting: 40% You are required to: 1. Research in order to find secondary sources on matters where a relevance to MNG00313 can be demonstrated 2. Prepare a report as detailed below (40% of total MNG00313 assessment) The core task for this assessment is multi-faceted: Find at least three (3) recent articles from business publications or media (e.g. business journals, newspapers, periodicals, Internet contributions, TV reports, etc.) and/or academic journals that relate to any one topic (or sub- topic) of interest to you and covered in MNG00313. Note that your selected articles must relate to the same topic and the articles must be published after 1 January 2015. Further, it is
  • 14. best if they do not come from the same source (e.g. a single publication) or type of source (e.g. a newspaper or website or academic journal). As a starting point (but this is NOT essential), a maximum of one (1) article may be in the collection of articles posted to the Assignment 1 pages in the MNG00313 MySCU webpages (posted either by you or other MNG00313 students). Identify and apply any of the theories covered in MNG00313 that you believe would assist a reader to understand the issues being discussed in the articles you selected. For the body of articles as a whole (not for each article separately): 1. Within copyright restrictions, ensure you provide a link (reference/url) to the articles (DO NOT ATTACH copies of the material) in your report. 2. Identify the theoretical issue covered in a topic of MNG00313 that relates with the most salience (relevance) to the contents of your selected articles.
  • 15. 3. Provide examples of agreements, disagreements or coverage disparities between the contents of the articles and the contents of the chosen MNG00313 topic coverage in the MNG00313 Study Guide, Readings and textbook. To do this, you need to compare the articles' content with the content of the various resources used in MNG00313 and in that comparison, you should identify agreements (similarities), disagreements (differences) and disparities (where one source mentions something and the other does not). 4. Critique the articles. To do this you should at least: • assess the significance of agreements, disagreements or disparities identified in the previous section. (Note: this is intended to assist you in deciding which articles to use in your assignment: you should choose those articles with the most significance in their agreement or disagreement with MNG00313. Degree of significance is a judgmental matter in this instance but you could ask yourself
  • 16. the ‘so what?’ question and if your answer is ‘I don’t know’ then it is likely that 2 | P a g e the degree of significance is minor and so you should choose a different article. Similarly, if there are very large disparities between MNG00313 and the articles' content you may need to assess whether the articles have salience (relevance) with respect to MNG00313). • assess whether you are in a position to form an opinion on the accuracy of the content of the articles (for example, are sources of information revealed in the articles? Or is the author in a position to be trusted in respect to this topic?) • question if the articles’ coverage of the issues has been balanced and comprehensive enough to present useful information (more than a single perspective identified and presented)
  • 17. • evaluate the worth of the articles to a decision maker who must consider similar issues in their respective roles (e.g. a potential employee deciding whether to work in a particular industry or company; an investor seeking to evaluate investment opportunities; a multinational corporation manager wanting to make a resource allocation decision; a citizen wishing to exercise her civic rights; etc). 5. Limit your written report to a maximum of four (4) typed pages (excluding cover sheet (if used), contents list (if used), reference list (required). Material submitted beyond four pages will not be assessed. Written reports must be submitted electronically and please note that quality of presentation will impact on your mark so do not squeeze extra words into your 4 pages by reducing the font below size 11 or by using margins that are so small as to reduce the readability of your report. The structure of your report is at your discretion. However as a guide you could use the
  • 18. following format: • Your name, SCU student ID number, unit code, unit name and primary (main) Topic to which the report refers. • A brief Executive Summary (no more than 1/2 page of the report’s four pages) • Table of Contents • Written report – no longer than 4 pages, including your introduction and conclusion if applicable structured in a manner that helps the reader understand its content • Reference List (Harvard Referencing) To be successful in the assignment you need to do the following: • read widely and try to relate that reading to the content of MNG00313 • make sure that you commence reading for this assignment at the beginning of the semester and keep up-to-date with your coverage of MNG00313 topics
  • 19. • have a good understanding of the content of MNG00313 • make sure that you present your opinion in your answer with respect to agreements, disagreements or disparities between the articles and the content of MNG00313 • provide reasons for your critique of the articles • provide active (that is, currently operating) links to the selected articles and also ensure that your answers are succinct and professionally presented 3 | P a g e • in your written work, be certain to submit original work not authored by any other person; where you consider it useful to support your ideas with reference to others’ work be careful to explicitly quote that work and to include a properly cited reference for each quoted source at the end of your assignment answer (in the references) • keep a copy of your submitted work. In assessing the assignment, the marker will take into account
  • 20. your performance in the following areas: • suitability of articles chosen (content relevance and standard of discussion in the articles will be important criteria) • logical coherence of your discussion and structure/organisation of content • coverage of key issues • conciseness and clarity • level of understanding of course concepts • relevance to theory (evidence that you have been able to identify how MNG00313 theories relate to the articles - or should have been invoked by the author/s of those articles) • extent of evidence presented in support of your opinion presentation • degree of effectiveness in conveying a message in the report presentation Refer over page for marking criteria to be used in this assessment.
  • 21. 4 | P a g e Marking criteria for Assessment Task 2 This is what your marker will be looking for … essentially this is a summary of all the words above! Assessment criteria/ Marks awarded for each level of performance in the written report Excellent Very good OK Needs some more work Needs
