Agribusiness Basics
● You must identify who will buy your produce and the varieties buyers want
● You must develop an enterprise business plan
● Join or form a cooperative for easy access to information, inputs, and loans
● It is important to know when to plant and harvest so that you get the
highest value for your produce
● To increase your income, you could add value by cleaning, sorting and
grading, processing, packaging of your produce
● Keep appropriate records such as dates of operations, activities, field
observations, purchases and costs incurred, quantities sold and prices
received
● There are funding opportunities or credit facilities for farmers to receive
money in the form of loans in order to grow their agribusiness
● You can contact an extension agent or banks of agriculture nearest to you
for more information
● Contact your local extension agent for more information

Land Preparation and Stem Sourcing
● Select a suitable site that is not on a slope, waterlogged, stony or very shallow
● The presence of biological activity such as worm casts is an indication of
good soils
● If the vegetation is older fallow, or too tall to go over it with a sprayer, slash
and allow regrowth for about two weeks
● Apply glyphosate at label rate to deal with stubborn weeds such as spear
grass, guinea grass and siam weed. Wait for 14 days to allow for total kill by
glyphosate
● If the vegetation is young and of low growth, apply glyphosate at label rate to
deal with stubborn weeds. Wait for 14 days to allow for total kill by glyphosate
● Plough and harrow your field. This will increase your cassava root yield.
However, do consider the cost of additional tillage against the expected yield
increase.
● You may want to ridge your field, especially if the cost of ridging is less than
that of ploughing. Ridging is especially advisable if you intend to harvest
during the dry season. Ridging will delay the need for weeding by about 3
weeks.

Planting and Weed Management
● To increase your cassava yield, it is recommended that you follow these
steps:
● Plant cassava only when the soil is moist at 1m between rows and 0.8m or
0.7m within row, and apply pre-emergence herbicide such as Lagon or
Primextra Gold at label rates within 24 hours after planting. Do not apply pre-
emergence herbicides on dry soil.
● Replace cuttings that fail to sprout after 2 to 3 weeks.
● When weeds cover 30 percent of your field and they are at the 4 to 6 leaf
stage, apply a post-emergence weed control. In grass-dominated fields or in
portions of the field that is grass-dominated, apply fusillade forte at label rate
under the cassava canopy.
● For grass- and/or broad leaf-infested fields, glyphosate may be applied
directly to weeds under cassava canopy with a shield, when cassava is at
least 8 weeks old.
● If cassava is less than 8 weeks old and the field is infested with grass and
broadleaf weeds, use manual weeding using a hoe or cutlass to remove

Safe Herbicides/Pesticides Application
● Do not eat, drink or smoke during spraying of herbicides
● Wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Wear a mask, gloves,
overall and rain boots.
● People without personal protective equipment should stay away during
spraying of the herbicides
● Spray in the direction of the wind. You can toss some ash to know the
direction of wind.
● Spray only when the wind is not strong and there is no indication of raining.
● Herbicides must be applied by trained personnel. Children should not play or
touch herbicides. They must stay away.
● Maintain the sprayer and the nozzles to ensure optimum performance of the
sprayer.
● Before application, read the label on herbicides to know the correct dosage.
● Use only herbicides approved by the National Agency for Food and Drug
administration and Control
● Do not use empty containers to convey water or vegetable oil. Discard them

Hypotheses
● There is no significant difference in knowledge between farmers
listening to IVR and those not using.
● IVR alone cannot lead to behavioral change
