This document summarizes a lightning protection study conducted at the Lawe-Lawe Terminal main base office and facilities owned by PT Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur. There have been previous lightning strikes at the facility. The study assessed the existing lightning protection systems, grounding installations, and made recommendations for improvements. Key areas studied included the process plant, crude oil tank area, power house, control center, main office, telecommunications tower, IT equipment room, electrical room, transformer shelter, and laboratory. Deficiencies were identified and detailed engineering designs were recommended to upgrade the lightning protection and ensure operational safety.

3. Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur, PHKT, own and
operates Lawe Lawe Process Plant located in East Kalimantan,
consist of four main areas; Process Plant, Crude Oil Tank Area,
Power House, Control Center. The facility was not built from zero
by PHKT and since operated by PHKT, numerous lightning strikes
occurred within area.
There was several previous lightning acidential has been
reported and than study, assessment lightning protection system &
grounding of lawe-lawe process plant has been conducted.
Recommendations with basic engineering regarding to lightning
protection system, grounding and surge protection devices at Lawe-
Lawe terminal has been submitted. It was found that the conducted
study with recommendations had not been followed up completely.
This might be caused by the report is in basic engineering stage
consist of site finding, recommendations and conceptual
engineering so dificullt to be applied.
4. Therefore, the further study needs to be done and
followed up with detailed engineering to provide detailed
installation design that can be verify and constructed. The
evaluation and assessment shall ensure operational safety of
Lawe-lawe process plant against lightning stroke both direct
strike and indirect strike.
Considering major impact to PHKT operations, it is not
simple to conduct Lawe Lawe Area engineering review on the
existing Lightning Protection System (LPS) and to arise with
recommendation and improvement plan.
The area to be covered by the study emphasises on
process plant, crude oil tank area, power house and control
center at process plant.
