Introduction
I am a time served apprentice with Thorn EMI Naval Systems Division, holding an HNC in
Electrical/Electronic Engineering.
I was a service engineer for 10 years with Thorn, BSL and Advanced Technical Services Limited,
repairing, servicing and commissioning all types of industrial controls, fault finding down to
component level.
Time spent as a Service Engineer was mostly motor control, both DC (SCR) and AC (VFD) and Soft
Starts plus all associated controls including PLCs.
During my time at Thorn EMI, I was also the customer training officer for 2 years, responsible for
training maintenance crews of owners of Thorn's equipment which included DC drives and Naval Data
Distribution systems.
From September 2001, I worked for Transocean. One year in the North Sea as an Electronic
Technician on the Sedco 704, an anchored semi, responsible for installation, maintenance and repair of
all electronic controls and instrumentation on board.
In September 2002, I moved to a DP drill ship, Discoverer 534, and promoted to Chief Electronic
Technician, responsible for the Electronics Technicians and the care of all electronic equipment on
board.
I was later promoted to Electrical/Electronic Supervisor on board the same drill ship, responsible for
Chief Electricians, Electricians, Chief Electronic Technicians and Electronics Technicians.
After becoming Electrical/Electronic Supervisor, my team and I took the Discoverer 534 from a
difficult 12 month shipyard, through sea trials and back to drilling in Pakistan and India with very low
down time.
I later moved to the Sedco 702, a DP Semi-submersible MODU, for 3 years as Electrical/Electronic

Supervisor in Ghana and Nigeria, where my team and I had a successful record of low down time, and
safe operations. I also spent time working within Technical Support.
More recently I have bee working for Lloyd's Register Energy – Drilling as a freelance Electrical
Surveyor. LRED incorporated MODUSpec and West, continuing to carry out Condition Surveys for
clients on every type of rig, from land rigs to high specification drillships.
During projects involving surveyor teams, my main focus is on Power Plant, Electrical Equipment,
Safety, Maintenance Systems and Spares.

Carried out a number of condition surveys on various rig types including land rigs, jack-ups,
anchored semi-subs, DP Semi-subs and DP drillships.
