3. MANUFACTURED BOARDS
Manufactured boards are timber sheets are produced by gluing
wood layers or wood.
Manufactured boards have been developed mainly for industrial
production as they can made in large sheets of consistent quality.
Boards are available in different thickness.
4. Manufactured board is mainly used for kitchen and
bedroom furniture and shelving.
Examples of manufactured boards are:
These are manmade boards, which are made by gluing wood
layers or wood fibers together.

The photograph opposite shows MDF sheets as they are
purchased.
5. Properties of manufactured boards
• Made use of waste wood materials.
• Saw dust is use for making MDF and hardboard.
• They are inexpensive so used instead of real wood.
• It is not look as good as real wood look.
• This boards are often covered with a thin layer of real wood which is
calles as veneer this improves their appearance.
6. MDF boards
• Smooth, even surface.
• Easily machined and painted or stained.
• Also available in water and fire resistant forms.
• Used mainly for furniture and interior panelling due to its easy
machining qualities. Often veneered or painted.

8. COMPOSITE TIMBERS
Particle board, also known as chipboard, is a wood product made from
wood particles, such as wood chips, sawmill shavings, or even saw dust.
This type of composite timber is generally cheaper, denser and more
uniform than conventional wood and plywood. It is usually used as a
substitution for them when appearance and strength are less important
than cost.
9. CHIPBOARD
• Made from chips of wood glued together.
• Usually veneered or covered in plastic laminate.
• Used for kitchen and bedroom furniture usually veneered or covered
with a plastic laminated.
• Shelving and general DIY work.
10. COMPOSITE TIMBERS
Plywood is a board made from thin sheets of wood, called plies or wood
veneers. Softwood plywood is usually made either of Douglas fir or spruce,
pine, and fir (collectively known as Spruce-pine-fir), and is typically used for
construction and industrial purposes. Hardwood plywood is used for some
demanding end use.
11. PLYWOODS
• A very strong board which is constructed of layers of veneer or piles
which are glued at 90 degrees to each other.
• Interior and exterior grades are available.
• Used for strong structural panelling board used in building
construction.
• Furniture making.
• Some grades used for boat building and exterior work.
• Available in 4 , 6 , 8 , 12 , 18mm.
13. BLOCKBOARD
• Similar to plywood but the central layer is made from strips of timber.
• Good for shelves and worktops.
• A man-made board.
• Used where heavier structures are needed.
• Common for shelving and worktops.
15. Timber for flooring
Hardwood floors come in many types, finishes and price
ranges. The longevity of any type of flooring depends on
how it's used and cared for.Hardwood flooring looks much
better than laminate flooring with a richer, warmer
appearance.

17. Selection of timber
Which timber you select will depend on the different structural and
aesthetic design contexts.
For example, timber for a building would require different
characteristics than timber for furniture , timber for a children’s toy
or building itself.
