Introduction
Nursery is a selected site having a well defined boundary, where fruit, flower vegetable or
forest plant species and their cultivars are maintained and multiplied using various sexual and
asexual propagation techniques. Nursery is consequently the basic need of horticulture. Plant
propagation techniques and practices is the core of horticulture nurseries. The planting
materials for horticultural plantations are raised from seeds and vegetative parts. Role of
Mother Plants is very primary and important. The fate of nursery depends on quality and
truthfulness of mother plants. A good nursery entrepreneur does not depend on others for
procurement of mother plants. Mother plants are required for both stock and scion. Mother
plants should be selected on the basis of its genetic traits and other factors like availability
and adaptation in the growing environment.
Nursery production acts as the backbone for the expansion of horticulture and Forestry.
Objectives of the nursery
 To raise healthy and disease free stocks.
 to distribute plant material in masses who have little knowledge about the techniques
of raising plants.
 to introduce exotic species.
 Planting of nursery grown plants is the surest method of artificially regenerating poor
and barren sites.
 Many plants do not respond well to direct seed sowing in the field. They are grown
well by transplanting the seedlings.
6
1. Re-Potting
Date:-22-11-2018
Ornamental plants brought from Nandanam nursery (nearly 300) were re-potted
we mixed appropriate proportion of sand, soil and coir pith to which the plants
were planted. Later these pots were transferred to different blocks of our
college, guest house and library.
7
2. Planting, Mulching and Irrigation
Date:-07-12-2018.
Planting of forestry species in and around the college premises, distributed
coconut husk mulch and even irrigated these saplings.
8
3. Nursery cleaning
Date:-12-12-2018.
We students were engaged in cleaning nursery removed sick plants and
arranged plants in attractive manner.
9
10
3. Identification of nursery plants
Date:-26-12-2018.
We tried to identify the species in our nursery. Nearly 60 species were identified
some among them are Acalypha, Hibiscus, Anthurium, Chlorophytum,
Euphorbia, Geranium, Syngonium, Aralia, Salvia, Cosmos,Ficus, Reo-
discolour, Dieffenbachia,Rose, Gerbera, Coleus, Mint, Snake plant,
Mother- in- law’s toung, Opuntia, Bougainvillaea,Zamia, Peperomia,
Gomphrena, Neerium, etc.
11
12
4. Pruning
Date:-07-01-2019.
We were engaged in pruning of dead and diseased shoots of plants present in
our college premises.
5. Sowing of cashew seeds
Date:-09-01-2019.
Sowing of cashew seeds were undertaken. We mixed soil, sand and FYM in
appropriate proportionand filled into poly bags to where seeds were sown and
watered.
13
7. Hard wood and semi-hard wood cuttings.
Date :30-01-2019
Sand, silt and FYM were sieved and mixed together to fill
100 poly bags/student.
Each student prepared 30 hard wood and semi-hard wood cuttings.
Date:06-02-2019.
Nearly 30 cuttings of different plants like Hibiscuss, Durantha, Pomegranate,
Amla, Rose, etc. were prepared by each student.
14
8. Soft wood cuttings.
Date : 13-02-2019
Soft wood cuttings of Acalypha, Rosemerry, Kufia, Geranium, Euphorbia,
etc.(Nearly 40 cuttings per each student) were prepared.
15
9. Lawn cleaning
Date:14-02-2019.
Students were engaged in cleaning and weeding operations in the lawn, pruned
Geranium, Euphorbia and even cleared weeds in the passage.
16
9. Weeding and watering.
Date:19-02-2019.
In Horticulture nursery weed management is an important componentof plant
protection for improving the productionpotential of nursery. It includes
management of the weeds in such a way that the nursery sustains its production
potential without being harmed by the weeds.
We carried-out weeding and watering of cuttings and cashew seedlings.
Observations were made on germination percentage of planted cuttings.
17
11. Grafting and Air- layering.
Date : 20-02-2019.
We visited horticulture orchard, where we carried out grafting in mango,
cashew. We had a good practical exposure where everyone carried-out air
layering in Gauva.
18
CONCLUSION:
It is very good exposure to know many things regarding practical nursery management
techniques. We got to know about many species in our college campus, also different
propagation methods of those species. And we even got opportunity to carryout different
propagation techniques by ourselves. Enthusiastic team work helped in bringing out effective
outcome through HOT.

  • 5. 5 Introduction Nursery is a selected site having a well defined boundary, where fruit, flower vegetable or forest plant species and their cultivars are maintained and multiplied using various sexual and asexual propagation techniques. Nursery is consequently the basic need of horticulture. Plant propagation techniques and practices is the core of horticulture nurseries. The planting materials for horticultural plantations are raised from seeds and vegetative parts. Role of Mother Plants is very primary and important. The fate of nursery depends on quality and truthfulness of mother plants. A good nursery entrepreneur does not depend on others for procurement of mother plants. Mother plants are required for both stock and scion. Mother plants should be selected on the basis of its genetic traits and other factors like availability and adaptation in the growing environment. Nursery production acts as the backbone for the expansion of horticulture and Forestry. Objectives of the nursery  To raise healthy and disease free stocks.  to distribute plant material in masses who have little knowledge about the techniques of raising plants.  to introduce exotic species.  Planting of nursery grown plants is the surest method of artificially regenerating poor and barren sites.  Many plants do not respond well to direct seed sowing in the field. They are grown well by transplanting the seedlings.
