To Whom It May Concern,
It is my great pleasure to recommend Hannah Ticoras for tenure in the New York City Department of
Education. I have known Hannah since she first arrived at BHS in the fall of 2016, and can speak to her
compassion, her tenacity, and her enormous capacity for growth.
While Hannah was never technically on my caseload for coaching, she is always proactive when it comes
to seeking out support, and I often find her in my office to discuss assessment, unit planning, and vertical
alignment. Her “a-ha” moments as a beginning teacher were as pleasurable to behold as those of any
student, and her own delight in learning is palpable to her students and correspondingly contagious. She
is a kid magnet; they’re drawn to her calm, thoughtful energy and are excited to learn in her class.
While Hannah is relentlessly reflective and always seeking to improve, she’s also always been willing and
able to give back as much support as she receives, and this is reflected in the leadership roles that she has
occupied for the past two years. She was wise to get her feet under her as a teacher first and took over
leadership of our department last year. The department has thrived under her care. While she has been
instrumental in implementing our school’s focus on vertical alignment over the past few years -
supporting our department’s journey all the way - she is also a very human leader. We are an enormous
department of eleven teachers over seven grades and two subjects (because middle school Humanities
teachers teach, and therefore must align with, both ELA and Social Studies curriculae), and we cover a
wide spread from experienced pedagogues to brand new teachers. Hannah’s ability to be aware of all of
our needs and differentiate accordingly speaks miles to her ability to lead a team. Furthermore, her recent
stewardship of the school’s GSA, as well as the full faculty PDs she has led on the subject, is a model of
how to lead a school club with passion and urgency.
I have no difficulty in recommending Hannah for tenure; she is a credit to any institution of which she is a
part. If you have further questions, please feel free to reach out to me at rebecca.crawford@k497.org.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Crawford
