Dear President Melany Gavulic:
This letter is being written with the purpose of informing you about the
irresponsible actions you permitted to happen within Hurley Medical Center,
regarding the request of a racist patient. The patient, upon having their
child born, said no black nurse was to handle their child. These demands were
illegal, which your hospital refused up front but then submitted to them by no
longer scheduling any black nurses while the patient was there. These actions
are a disgrace to the Universal Medicine Ethics code.
According to the documentary The Biology Of Skin Color, black people simply
have more melanin in their skin. Melanin is a pigment in the skin that helps
block UV radiation. Depending on the amounts of the 2 different sub-pigments,
people can appear either darker or lighter skinned, none of which has any
effect on the performance as a nurse or medical doctor. A 20-year veteran
black nurse is the better care provider than a white nurse with 1 year of
experience.
As stated in the article, 7 Ways We Know Systemic Racism Is Real, it is shown
that an educated and experienced black healthcare provider has a harder time
being hired, retaining their job, and being supported and protected by the
people employing them, based on their skin color, not by their skills or
knowledge.
The support of these types of racial myths is what prevents the people best
suited for these situations from being allowed to do things such as
practicing, advancing medicine and healthcare fields, which contribute to more
lives being saved.
2. The following advancements would not have been possible if these people had
been restricted based on their skin color: Patricia Bath, MD. First black
female physician awarded a patent for a medical invention, A technique for
cataract surgery. Another is Charles Drew, MD. First to use blood plasma to
store blood for transfusion, which literally saved lives. Their contributions
helped millions of patients of all various skin colors.
When places such as Hurley Medical Center fail to support their employees, and
correct racial myths, we all suffer from the ripple effect that your response
to the event created. I look forward to the day when Hurley Medical Center
supports all of its employees regardless of their race, gender or orientation.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
STUDENT B
