Dear Daniel Pantaleo:
On July 17th 2014, you killed someone, you were 29. You killed him because he was selling
untaxed cigarettes. So you put him in a headlock and choked him and didn't stop even when
you had him on the ground. He was saying “I can’t breathe” 11 to 12 times. While you had him
in a headlock, did you try to put yourself in his shoes? Thinking that today might be your last day
on this earth, or that you would die because of a cop for selling untaxed cigarettes, or just
because you’re black this cop is going to bother you. But the real question is, did you kill him
because he was selling untaxed cigarettes or becauses he was black?
See that’s what’s wrong with our world today cops judge black people off of their skin color. If
a cop was to pull over a white person, the white person has a lower chance of going to jail and
can go about their day. But if a cop was to pull over a black person, the black person has a
higher chance of going to jail then going about their day. Research shows that 33% of black
people are in jail, while for white people 30% of white people are in jail. White people make up
more of the population than black people. See the numbers are so odd and uneven. All of this
happens because black people have a tag on them. The tag is because he or she is black that
means he or she is a bad person or that they are going to rob me and the list goes on. See this
shows that black people have a higher chance of going to jail then white people.
According to biology, color, race doesn't mean anything it’s just a trait we have. Skin color is a
trait based on where our ancestors evolved. If they evolved in a high UV area, they would have
darker skin. If they evolved in a low UV area they would have lighter skin because they would
have less melanin but there are 2 types of melanin one is pheomelanin and the skin color you
get from pheomelanin is reddish and yellow and the other one is eumelanin that one gives you
the skin color brown and black.
2. I would also like to pointout that, according to systemicracismis real on ben and jerry
website, when a black person is arrested the black people is convicted more then a white
person but when a black person is convicted they are about 20% more likely to be sentenced
to jail time, and typically see sentences 20% longer than those for whites who were convicted of
similar crimes.
As a community and society we need to change the view of minority because as history has
shown they are more susceptible to be discriminated against or imprisoned.
Best regards, Irvin Hernandez
