Was the American Revolution really
revolutionary?
Answer the above question in at least one CER paragraph, using evidence from the texts “Who were the
Colonists?” and “Tyranny is Tyranny”, your primary source, as well as your own background knowledge.
Make sure to define the word ​revolutionary​ before starting your argument, either by using the Merriam
Webster definition, or a definition of your own creation.
Note: Revolutionary​ means to make a change. So, the
question is asking you if the American Revolution made a
change in society.
Consider the following facts when making your case:
● The new government in the United States was structured as a representative democracy. In
1776, the majority of governments were structured as monarchies or oligarchies.
● Women did not gain the right to vote in the United States until 1920.
● The US Constitution, written after the American Revolution, allowed for freedom of religion,
something relatively unheard of at this time.
● Wealth inequity in the United States still exists. See attached charts.
● Slavery existed legally in the United States until the passage of the 13th Amendment to the
Constitution in 1865. ALL African-Americans were not legally given the right to vote until in the
Civil Rights Act of 1964 (which made it illegal to make people pay money to vote… this was
one way that people prevented people of color from voting after slavery ended).
