2. How to Write a letter to the Editor?
 A Letter to the Editor may be written to the editor of a newspaper or a
magazine. It is written to highlight a social issue or problem. It can also be
written in order to get it published in the said medium.
 As it is a formal letter, the format has to be followed strictly. Only formal
language can be used i.e. abbreviations and slang language should be
avoided.
 A letter to the editor is a formal letter and in the examination, students are
asked to write a letter to the editor. Here, we will discuss format for the
convenience.

Let us discuss the format of a Letter to the Editor.
The format of a letter to the editor of a Newspaper is as
follows –

4. 1. Sender’s address: The address and contact
details of the sender are written here. Include
email and phone number, if required or if
mentioned in the question.

5. 2. Date: The date is written below the sender’s
address after Leaving one space or line.

6. 3. Receiving Editor’s address: The
address of the recipient of the mail i.e.
the editor is written here.

7. 4. Subject of the letter: The main purpose
of the letter forms the subject. It must be
written in one line. It must convey the
matter for which the letter is written.

8. 5. Salutation (Sir / Respected sir /
Madam)

9.  6. Body: The matter of the letter is written here. It is
divided into 3 paragraphs as follows –
 Paragraph 1: Introduce yourself and the purpose of
writing the letter in brief.(I am Radha G, member of NGO AWAAZ. I am writing to
you in order to highlight the deteriorating condition of river Yamuna)
 Paragraph 2: Give a detail of the matter.(The city of Delhi is getting
contaminated water from river Yamuna. The residents are to be blamed for this. They pollute the river with garbage,
sewage and filth. The river water is full of bacteria, plastic, chemicals and other waste materials. It is unfit for
consumption.
The people have been demanding a Water Treatment plant. The authorities have not yet responded to the repeated
requests.)
 Paragraph 3: Conclude by mentioning what you expect
from the editor. (For example, you may want him to
highlight the issue in his newspaper / magazine).(I request you
to highlight the problem in your newspaper and arouse public interest. We all need to get together in order to
get the plant set up in the area.)

 Subject : Problems faced due to noise pollution.
 I would like to draw the kind attention of the concerned authorities towards increasing problem of noise pollution. It is
causing great damage to the health problem of the city. It leads to irritation, loss of sleep, rest and peace. It is harmful to
physical and mental health of people. Frequent loud noise affects the working efficiency of the people. Persistent noise
pollution causes a loss of sense of hearing.
 Increasing noise pollution is a big threat to the health and fitness of the people, if the noise pollution is allowed to go
unchecked it may rob the people of their hearing capacity, increasing number of vehicles on the roads, rising growth of
factories, construction work, loudspeakers used on various occasions, rock and pop music, etc. are various factors
responsible for causing noise pollution. Noise control laws are openly violated.
 It is the time that the authorities should awake against the danger of noise pollution. They should strictly enforce the noise
control laws. The noise producing factories located in the residential areas should be shifted to far-off places without any
delay. The use of loudspeaker should be stopped after specific time. Above all, public needs to be aware and cooperative
against the danger of noise pollution because without public cooperation authorities cannot make much difference.
 It is earnestly hoped that concerned authorities will take immediate and urgent necessary action against those responsible
for noise pollution to relieve the people from the harmful effects of noise pollution.
