1. Looking back at my preliminary task, I feel I have come a long way. Every skill has progressed, whether that be filming, lighting, sound,
quality, and also the creativity of the work itself. The first thing you notice about the preliminary task is the quality of the footage. It’s very
grainy and hard to watch, so this immediately became a top priority when it came to our actual final piece. Although we used one of the
same cameras for our thriller opening, we edited it at the end so that it was in HD and this made a remarkable difference. It not only looks
more professional, but it also is easier to watch so people can focus more upon the footage itself. Also, we used two different camera
brands to film scenes which meant there was two different qualities of work- whilst making our prelim we thought this as saving time, but
we began to realise that time saving will immediately take a toll on the film work, so instead we used one camera to film every shot for the
final piece. The camera work was also very shaky due to lack of knowledge with the tripod, particularly with panning. It is very clear that it
was amateur work, so we practised a lot whilst filming the final piece so that every shot was smooth. If we felt a shot was not good
enough, then we refilmed it until it reached our expectations. We also had a variety of angles in the final piece, including long, medium,
close ups, low angle and point of view shots. In the prelim we see very little variety of shots. Shots are essential to adding dimension and
atmosphere to any piece of film work, and our prelim seriously lacked any sense of feeling. However, having learnt this from the prelim we
were then able to take these mistakes and turn them into an atmosphere of tension, fear and suspense. When it came to editing, we were
very unsure with the prelim- we had no prior experience and this was evident due to the lack of music, too much background noise, bad
cutting and the ever changing lighting. This was not as much of an issue with the final piece. We got rid of any background noise we didn’t
need and added the creepy music to heighten the atmosphere further still. The thriller opening was also very smooth- all of the cuts and
lighting made sense. Overall I feel I have learnt a lot in the progression from the preliminary task to the full product. The prelim task was
something that educated me, whilst the final piece was something that I am proud of. My skills have vastly improved within the world of
media, and I feel this was especially down to the prelim task.
