2. Camera
When the characters are being introduced, medium shot is used. This is to show
that they are the main focus of that moment. This may help the audience to
distinguish the similarities and differences of each character, which can help the
audience also understand what each character is like.
The are quick swipe-pans in the cafeteria scene, which shows the
different types of cliques within the school. The swipes happen in time
of the voice over so that the audience can see exactly what is being
said.
Long shots are used during the school scenes as a way to lay out the atmosphere of
what high school is like as the target audience are people that go to school. This helps
the audience relate and connect to the film.
When longshots are used in other scenes like ReginaGeorge’s house, it is to show he
difference between a lavish lifestyle and a normal lifestyle. It may make the audience
intrigued to see how people of other status live.
3. Camera
Low angles and high angles are used to show he hierarchy between the
people at the school. An example of this is when the girl on the left (low
angle) was giving a speech about her popularity and the girl on the left
(high angle) was ready to catch her, as if she was a Queen and had
power over her.
Tilt is used in this scene to show the transformation from Cady’s normal look to
“plastic”. Informs the audience about changes that happen in high school and
how dramatic they can be.
Panning is used to show the audience different areas of the main location (which is the
school). This could be so that the audience are aware that it is the main location where
everything starts and everything ends. Also gets the audience familiar to the location so
that if they do end up watching the movie, they’re aware of what it is.
4. Sound
The non-diegetic music used through out the trailer is upbeat and fun,
which represents teenagers so it would attract in the target audience
(teenage girls), also as it is the type of music teenagers listen to.
The narration (voice over) used in the trailer helps the audience understand what is happening
and gives a brief back story to each character and the events that take place. This may draw the
audience in more as they’ve hearing the narration from the point of view of a character around
their age, which could help them to grasp things from a certain perspective.
There are points in the trailer where the music stops to draw attention to
the stupid comments some characters make. For example, when Karen
Smith (dumb plastic) talks about being “psychic” and her having “espn”.
Another example of this was at the beginning where the teacher made an
awkward stereotypical statement in front of a class, which teenagers can
relate to as they have experienced many mortifying days.
.
5. Mise-en-scene
The colour pink is the most popular and most worn colour in the trailer. This
suggests that the genre for the movie is romance and that the gender for the
target audience are females, as pink is associated with girls and not guys. Also,
there are a lo more girls than boys present in the scenes, which supports the
point of the colour pink being for girls.
In the school scenes, the area is almost-always crowded. This can show that in
school, teenagers normally go around in cliques or groups. Can also show the
suffocation of high school and how every where teenagers go, it’s almost like
they have no privacy. Even in the more crowded scenes, the colour pink also
makes an appearance most of the time and girls are still the most shown
gender.
6. Codes and Conventions
Film production logo was shown straight away, from the beginning of the trailer. It is the first thing
the audience will see and since Paramount is one of the Big 6, the audience are likely to have a
positive thought about the type of movie the trailer is.
Film title – shown a few seconds until the end of the trailer so it’s one of the last things the audience
see. This may have been done so that they remember it more, that way
Music – Have non-diegetic and voice over (narration)
Followed
Not followed/changed
The trailer was 2:26 but normally, official trailers last between
1:30 and 2:00
BBFC age rating –The trailer did not have an age rating
There is no release date for the movie
8. Camera
Through out the trailer, close ups are used to show the strong emotions the
characters display. This shot is used so that the audience can et an idea of how
certain situations are affecting the characters, which may also make the audience
either feel sympathy or empathy.
In the first over the shoulder shot, it is clear to the
audience that the two characters were having a one sided
conversation (on the man’s side) as the audience are
made aware of the discomfort on the female character’s
face. The second over the shoulder shot, contrasts with
the first image as the female character seems comfortable with the man she is conversing with.
This shot adds realism as it lets the audience adapt the same view as the men in the scene.
This wide shot is used to show how separated the female protagonist is from
everyone else in the setting. The audience can clearly tell that she is feeling
lonely as she is on her phone and she is alone because there is nobody beside
her.
9. Camera The character Dave (Morris Chesnut) is
known right from the beginning of the
trailer that he is not ready for a huge
commitment such as children. In the
first image, a child is on his lap shown in
a high angle to connote that his
willingness to not have children is above
having children.The high angle shows
that children are more inferior than
Dave.
In the second image, that part of the
trailer is also Dave talking about how
he’s not ready for children. He us show
in a low angle to show that how he feels
about the topic is more superior to how
his partner feels. Also, it is a stereotype
that men are more superior to women
and that works for this image as he is
aware he will get what he wants.
10. Sound
Non-Diegetic
At the beginning of the trailer, Leah (Sanna Lathan) was having a conversation with Dave (Morris Chesnut) about
wanting children. The piano music was quite sad with a medium pace to show the audience that the two characters
do have different opinions, which puts a strain in their relationship.
The music slows down when Carter gives man threatening looks and warning, when he was making Leah
uncomfortable in the club. This was a sign to warn the audience that Carter does have dark secret that would son be
revealed.
The pace of the music quickens up a bit and adds lyrics as Carter and Leah build up a “perfect” romantic relationship.
The music stays that pace through out all the scenes of him meeting her friends and family.
Music slows down again at the gas station when a man is talking to Leah about Carter’s car. Then, it completely
changes to a fast and thrilling sound when Carter beats up the guy in front of Leah’s eyes.
From then, the form of the music changed completely from piano to a more harsh and threatening sound to go with
the pace and emotions of the characters
At the end, music stops and all that can he heard is a sharp sound with connotes danger and suspense.
11. Mise-en-scene
Although through out the trailer the protagonist is only wearing
minimal makeup, consisting of mascara, eyeshadow and red lipstick,
the makeup she wears makes her eyes look darker which connotates
tiredness and fear. This helps through out the trailer as from the
beginning, the audience are able to see that she is not happy with the
way her life is going. In many of the scenes, she is shown as being
scared or distraught, which also links with the dark clothing she wears
that connotes death.
12. Codes and Conventions
Followed
Not followed/changed
One thing that was changed was that the movie title was shown right at the beginning of
the trailer. Normally, film titles are shown at the end of a movie trailer of near the end.
The trailer didn’t produce an age rating however, it did say “This film is not yet rated”
Includes production company
Includes film title at the end of the trailer
Had non-diegetic music and diegetic speech
14. Camera
Close up is used to show detail to the guy
holding the gun. It can also be used to show
the audience that he is intimidating and is in
control in that situation.
The over the shoulder shot to show that the two
people speaking are of importance to the scene and the
main focus of the scene as well. The guy who’s shoulder
it’s looking over, suggests that he’s an outcast and not
as important as the other two characters.
The two shot is used to show that the
two men in the frame are the main
focus of the situation and that the
scene is based around them. This helps
the audience to concentrate on their
conversation and their conversation
only.
15. Camera
Low angle shows that the man leaning over has more
authority than the man sitting down. This shot helps the
audience to establish who is in control in the scene by
making the person in authority appear higher (in a higher
status) than the other person on the lower end. This shot
can connote how intimidating the person with authority
can be.
16. Sound
The sound used for the trailer is quite
mature and sophisticated, which links
in with the characters. For example,
the characters are mature with age
and all wear quite expensive suits and
dresses. However, this was at the
beginning (first 18 seconds of the
trailer). As soon as the Godfather
mentioned the word murder, the
music changed to a more dramatic
and fast drum sound that connotes
danger, thriller and mystery.The
drum music sounds like a heart beat,
which may suggest guilt, suspicion
and risk.
17. Mise-en-scene
The men in the trailer all wear nice tailored suits, which
connotes wealth and arrogance. As there is quite a lot
of violence and fighting in the trailer, it could also mean
that they are gangsters, which would connote danger.
