Research and planning
1. The film opens with the credits and the name of the production
company producing the film.
The title of the film opens the scene, at the
beginning of the film and whilst the opening
credits are playing, the well known Jaws
theme begins to play as the soundtrack and
setting the thriller theme this then slowly
fades into the first scene.
It begins with a tracking shot of a group young
people having a gathering on the beach unaware of
the events about to occur.
2. The opening sequence continues revealing
the teenagers obliviously having fun before
the trouble begins, this consists of showing
stereotypical teenage activities like drinking,
smoking and becoming romantically involved
with each other.
Following the tracking shot which reveals all the
teenagers activates. It then moves into a mid shot of a
young guy smoking and getting the attention of the
unknown victim before the tragic event occurs. As these
scenes are used to build the narrative for the main story.
Using teenagers for the opening scene makes them seem
naïve and idiotic for getting drunk near the sea where
people can easily get injured because of this storyline it
will make the audience become fearful as it could easily
happen to them. Making this a pivotal scene as it begins
to change the tone of the film to having themes of a
thriller than a light hearted teen flick.
3. A long shot of the group, near the ocean which
makes the audience start to feel anxious and
curious to what might happen next.
The next part of the sequence is a long tracking shot
building up to the first incident which is still unknown to
the audience. The Lighting how now become far more
darker as the tone of film begins to change and the reveal
of the main antagonist is being built up with suspense.
4. The tension slowly builds when the camera
reveals the young girl innocently swimming
around in the ocean, unaware of the danger
beneath her.
A close up of the girl’s body continues to create fear and
visual clues to what the story line might be about, as hardly
any dialogue has been said that reveals any information.
5. The Jaws well known soundtrack
continues to increases as the shark gets
closer and closer to her body, this
leaves audience members on the edge
of their seats unsure if she will be
attacked or not.
The music creates a harsh, tension
atmosphere as soon as the shark
begins tension cause the audience to
feel fear.
6. In this mid-shot you can her struggle
to grip on to the side of the object in
water and she is in too pain and is
frighten unsure of what to do.
In this close-up you can see the extreme pain she is in and
how close to death she is, this helps establish that the film will
centre around man verse shark.
7. Se7en
The opening of the film begins with a character
setting the metronome. This doesn’t give any hints
to the genre of the film but the use of the
metronome creates suspense as it sounds like a
heart beat.
This shows that it is the beginning of the film as it reveals
the production company. The music rises to create an on
edge atmosphere.
8. The fast paced music builds suspense, as
the image shows that the film is highly
secretive as nothing is really shared but it
give the audience subtle hints to the story
line.
From this close up of the blade you can connote
something dangers and harmful is about to occur.
This also hints that the character holding the
blade could possibly be a murderer. The music
also screams when the blade appears which could
signify the screams the blade has caused.
9. The fact the title of the film was show a
the end of the sequence draws the
audience in and makes them more aware
of what is happening. The title of the film
is hiding in the shadows which creates
creepy and unnerving atmosphere for the
audience. The music makes the eerie and
frightening sense to what is going to occur
in the film.
The font of the writing gives the impression that the
letters are ghostly or jumpy almost moving along
with the moving.
10. Dark knight rises.
The sequence begins with the name of the production company, the fast past music create an
exciting and entertaining introduction to the film, although the dark and shadow effect on the
logo instead of the usual brighter colours shows how the film differs from others made by the
company and presents itself as more of a thriller than family film like many others made by the
same company.
11. The logo of DC is usually means the film is aimed at young
people and families as it’s well known for its comic books but
the darken tone to it shows it is more aimed at older teens and
adults instead of its usual audience. The music played over the
top of the logo begins to build the tension of the film and
builds a dramatic effect.
The use of smoke around the name creates a
mystery and the sense of the unknown. The
upbeat music creates and intense movement
for the audience.
12. The title of the film is present fairly near the end of the sequence
which continues with making the opening a mystery for the
audience, only revealing small hints about the plot to the audience.
From this you can see the drowned out newspapers showing the
film is related to crime and will mostly be a crime thriller.
The close up of the character face, makes
the audience more eager to find out more
about the characters in the story line. The
fact the is close up is a printed photo of the
character shows that someone is either
looking for him or hunting him down, this
could be a hint to the plot of the film.
13. Nightcrawler.
The film starts with jumping straight into the film
instead of introducing the cast and characters,
keeping the audience on their toes as something
would always be happening. The dark setting
suggest the character in the shot is a criminal not
wanting to be caught.
The dark lighting gives a shady and criminal
vibe to the film, however the light in front of
them could be representing the protagonist
about to appear. The sharp objects in the car
represent the violence and danger which would
occur in a crime thriller.
14. The introduction of the character in low lighting
suggests he is a criminal or a antagonist of some
sort. As this is the first shot of the character it
brings the audience in as they want to find out
more about who he is.
The over the shoulder shot of the
police suggests the character is a
criminal of the story and is presented
as bad. The bright light shows the
contrast between the good and evil
which is a theme in thrillers. The use of
a dialogue gives more hints to plot to
the audience and presents the
character as menacing.
