Editor's Notes
Positive communication is defined as the ability to convey messages be them affirming or critiquing in nature, in a positive manner.
Positive communication is important in effective distance learning because it sets the tone for how the class will be conducted in the students level of comfortability in the class. Because most of the responses that are given as well as the comments that are made are made electronically, there's a lot of information that can be missed in someone's voice. So it's important to emphasize the positivity that can sometimes get lost through the highway of text that is so frequently traveled in distance learning.
Communication with the Positive tone allows the instructor to send a message to the students that they truly have their best interest at heart. Many instructors have a challenge of finding credibility with their students because of the limited face-to-face contact (Staff 2011). So instructors sometimes have to go above and beyond to create a level of buy-in from their students that they truly care about each individual students process of learning.
When that is executed effectively, instructors have a better chance that there comments will be much more warmly embraced due to the affirmations that these instructors have already given their students. So when grading than the assignment, and the instructor can't ignore what was not completed or not sufficient for the assignment, but each instructor should put a focused energy on bringing some type of information as to what was done correctly in this assignment.
Personality training assessments like true colors are the Gallup strengths training can help an instructor notice different strengths or positive characteristics that exists within each student which will give them and in on being able to affirm those students of what it is that they're doing correctly period going through a training like this makes them aware of the many different types of strengths and how they are utilized so that instructors can pinpoint when students utilize those whether those students have been through the training or not.
Assessment and evaluation are key components training a distance instructor and effective positive communication because it allows them to reflect back on previous experiences in online distance learning and by going through there assessment and evaluations from previous classes, daycare hone in on what day did correctly and what needs to be emphasized for the next class that they are taking on.
Community could be defined as a group of individuals who have different sets of abilities and strengths who are focused in on one common goal that affects each member individually.
The importance of establishing Community is to create a sense of togetherness which will lend itself to an arena of support for each of the individual students who exist within this community as well as the instructor so that that Focus goal can be achieved for all members of that community.
The element of teamwork and an overall holistic effort from each contributing member of the community is essential for establishing that sense of community. Each team member has to feel equally considered and appreciated in order for the Apex of productivity to be met. So affirmation of each individual is essential in meeting this goal.
But along with affirmations comes a level of accountability and follow through from the instructors (Paloff & Pratt 2011) Students have to understand that they will be held accountable for how they conduct themselves as well as the work that they turned in and so the level of expectation has to be clearly set from the instructor as well as that instructors follow through on whatever set of expectations they have for themselves so that they can maintain that credibility with the students.
A lot of the work that is done in learning teams help strain the instructor on how to hold each member of that learning team accountable as well as make sure they're healthy and positive communication is happening within their learning team. The fact that the online instructor can recognize all of the communication or lack thereof that is taking place between each member of the learning team helps create a sense of accountability for each learning team member. So the more and online instructor can oversee learning teams, the more training they're going to have and becoming a more effective distance learning instructor.
Any type of classroom management training is going to teach you and train you on how to conduct healthy and effective instruction in the classroom through the challenge of managing the individual Personalities in my classroom.
