4. Masthead
Magazine B has let the cover model and PUG
cover the masthead, this means the magazine
knows that the reader will know what magazine
this is without having to read the masthead fully.
Magazine A involves an image into the
masthead, but puts the cover models below the
masthead. This shows that the magazine is new
and not as well known as magazine B.
Both mastheads are written in bold white
capitals.
5. Cover Model(s)
Magazine A uses more than one cover model, each
is wearing one of the colours involved in the colour
scheme. The models are posing in a serious, yet
approachable way, making the magazine seem
friendly.
Magazine uses one cover model only, again wearing
one of the colours involved in the colour scheme.
The model is posing in an aggressive way, with the
nose pointing upwards and his right hand in the
shape of a gun, making the magazine seem
dangerous.
Both magazines have the cover model(s) looking
serious, showing that the magazine only cares about
the music.
6. PUG
Magazine A uses text language (txt, g2g etc.) to
appeal to a younger audience.
Magazine B uses to PUGs to advertise the
content of the magazine itself, and uses the
colour scheme, along with a contrasting colour
not in the scheme (yellow) to make the PUG
stand out more.
Both magazines use PUGs to advertise their
magazine, using their own colour scheme. Also,
both have one in the bottom right corner of the
magazine.
7. Main cover line
Magazine A uses a font in block letters to appeal to
a younger audience. The phrase ‘The Summer of
Dub’ is a play with words, using ‘The Summer of Love’
from the 60’s, showing that times have changed and
that we don’t listen to the older music, and that dub
step is the way forward.
Magazine B makes the magazine itself sound
surprised, encouraging the reader to be surprised
also.
Both magazines write their main cover lines in bigger
font than the other cover lines and write them in
capitals, so that it’s one of the first things the reader
look at.
8. Cover lines
Magazine A writes the cover lines in such a way
to suggest the magazine is giving you a playlist,
showing, once again, it’s focus on the music.
Magazine B focuses more on gossip and news,
such as ‘Usher’s exes’, ‘How girl rappers fell off’
and ‘Will.I.Am: The future of music’
Both magazines put the cover lines in the format
of a list. Making them seem almost like a to-do
list to the reader.
9. Final Analysis
To conclude, I think Magazine A is targeted
more towards the audience I would like to aim my
magazine at, so I will be using many features from
this magazine cover. The few things I dislike from
Magazine A are the main cover story font and the
masthead. I will be using ideas from Magazine B for
these sections of the magazine.
