1. NAME: ADAM SUMAILA
1. Having seen/realize from our first lecture via the Learning Management System
(LMS), describe in one paragraph, how you will relate the Coronavirus Pandemic
to the Theory of Cultural Determinism.
2. In what ways has the Coronavirus Pandemic affected/molded our emotional and
behavioral patterns in Ghana?
3. In two paragraph (one for each) describe how the Coronavirus Pandemic
affirmed/contrasted the idea of environmental determinism.
1. Relating the Coronavirus Pandemic to the Theory of Cultural Determinism.
Culture determinism generally relate to the belief that the culture in which we are raised in
determines who we are at emotional and behavioral levels. It also supports the idea that our
emotional and behavioral patterns are formed and molded by the culture we are raised in. The idea
of culture determinism can be related to the coronavirus pandemic in such that the coronavirus has
molded our culture and made us to adapt to new ways of life. Aspects of our culture has been
greatly influenced by the coronavirus, some of this aspects includes our life style that is the way
we shake hands with people whenever we meet them. Another aspect is our dressings that is, now
we put on nose masks and hand gloves before we go into public places. In conclusion, the
coronavirus pandemic has molded our emotions and behavioral patterns therefore; it is related to
the theory of culture determinism.
2. Ways in which the Coronavirus Pandemic has affected/molded our emotional and
behavioral patterns in Ghana.
The coronavirus pandemic has indeed affected and molded our emotional and behavioral
patterns in Ghana in the following ways:
a) The coronavirus pandemic has cause us to change certain life style we used to live. For
example, it was our behavior to shake hands with people whenever we meet them but now
that behaviour has been change because everyone is conscious not to contract the deadly
virus.
2. b) We did not really take hand washing and the use of sanitizers seriously, the coronavirus
has molded our emotional and behavior patterns now we make hand washing and the use
of alcohol based hand sanitizers our daily routine. People wash their hands anytime they
touch surfaces, people are not allowed into certain shops if they do not sanitizer their hands.
c) Before the coronavirus pandemic people used to crowed themselves in a particular place
and had no regards for personal space but during the pandemic people have learned to
respect personal space by observing social distance
d) Amidst the virus, our emotional and behavioral patterns in Ghana have change. People now
donate things, in the form of food, hand sanitizers, money and veronica buckets to
hospitals, their neighbours and the poor but needy peoples in the communities.
3 (a). How the Coronavirus Pandemic affirmed the idea of environmental determinism.
Environmental determinism is of the view that the environment determines how culture will
develop. The coronavirus pandemic has affirmed the belief that the environment influences our
culture. Before the pandemic we live in a society or environment where we appreciated hands
shakes, group eating and we attach more respect to people who returned from abroad. The
coronavirus pandemic entered our society, which changed our environment as a result influenced
our culture. Our culture of shaking hands when we meet friends and families has changed also
because of the pandemic that has changed the environment made us not eat in groups anymore. In
conclusion we can say the environment to a large extend determines our culture therefore affirms
the idea of environmental determinism.
3 (b). How the Coronavirus Pandemic contrasted the idea of environmental determinism.
Although the environment we live in has changed by the introduction of the coronavirus pandemic.
We still have cultures that remain the same despite the change in environment, for example, we
still speak the same language we used to, also our way of naming newborn babies is the same.
These examples contrast the idea that the environment determines how our culture will develop.
In conclusion we can say the environment do not determine our culture therefore contrast the idea
of environmental determinism.
