Magazine and Website
BY GEORGIA BROWN
Task 1 Research: Living North
Living North is a magazine aimed at people who live in the northern region of England. It contains articles on food and
dining, walking, the northern countryside and lifestyle. Their target audience are people of a higher social grade from
middle to upper class with a grade of AB and at an age of 30+. They mainly target women however not exclusively. The
front cover of the magazine contains bright colours which stand out and create a fresh and appealing look. The colours
used are mainly pink and green which may be used as a way to appeal to their target market which is mainly women
female. This is because these colours are associated with women and stereotypically this the kind of colours what they
prefer. The green may also link towards the fact that this is a magazine for people who live in the north and in the
countryside; not in big cities like London. This means that the viewers connect the green colours n the cover to the
countryside and it therefore relates to green fields or trees. On the other hand the website is not as bright and as a
plainer colour scheme this may be because the website has a larger male reading base than the magazine as you can
easily pick an article you want and avoid those which do not interest you by merely typing it in. Additionally the hard copy
of the magazine may need to be brighter to stand out from other magazines where as if you go to the website you have
gone their on purpose and are unlikely to have stumbled upon it unlike with the magazine. On the cover of the Living
North magazine there is almost always only one main image used and this should appeal highly to the target audience. It
is meant to be very aesthetically pleasing and may be a picture of food, interior design or a landscape. It should show the
reader what kind of thing will be inside and additionally on the website they show a larger image in the center of the
screen to get the readers attention and draw them in. the title stands out dramatically on both the website and hard copy
as it is a different colour to the background. This helps the reader to find the name that they are looking for and
promotes their brand additionally. The written work is of a high level aimed towards people who work in management or
above.
Task 1 Research: Country Living
Country Living is a home and lifestyle magazine targeted towards people who have a higher income and live in rural areas.
It focuses on lifestyle, interior design, food and the countryside and contains articles with advice on country living. The
target audience for this magazine are people of a high to middle class social grade with a grade of AB at an age of 30+,
they are most likely a home owner and live in the countryside. It mainly targets women and this is why it contains quite
feminine coloured fonts on the cover. The colours of the fonts are light and airy and therefore it appeals to their target
market as the magazine will stand out from others around it. Additionally the whole front cover has lots of bright colours
so that it looks more appealing to women. However in contrast their website has a much plainer colour scheme which may
be because it uses the pictures to entice people to read each specific article as it doesn’t need to stand out from other
websites as you go to that website on purpose you don’t stumble there unlike the magazine which has competitors
directly next to it. The cover of each Country Living magazine generally contains one single photograph and it is mainly
linked to either the outdoors, food or home interior. This is because it needs to tell people exactly what is inside and it
does that perfectly. The photographs are also very enticing and beautiful which will draw the reader in and make them buy
it. Their title on both their hard copy and their website is centered and very large. It stands out dramatically as on the
magazine it is a different colour to the background and on the website it is cut out of a darker photograph so that stands
out. The actual font used by them is quite proper and feminine and the other fronts used on the front cover are swirly and
girly and beautiful which links to the subjects that they are talking about and is very appropriate. The language used is
written for a person at a higher level who may work high up in management of other such jobs, this means that they have
a high capability and the language used suits them. They also use lots adjectives to make the reader think the certain
things that they want them t in order to get them t buy the magazine. For example the ‘Romance’ of roses may make
people want to know how to be romantic. And therefore they may buy it.
Task 1 Research: Walk
The Walk magazine created by the Ramblers Charity is the most popular walking magazine in England with a
subscription of around 90,000 readers. Their target audience are active adults aged 18-42 however not exclusively.
Their target audience is mostly male which may be why there are mainly men on the front cover of their magazines so
that it appeals to them. They have a slightly above average income and are middle class with a social grade of a B. The
title on the front cover is very big and easy to read, even with the photograph of the man in front of it you know
exactly what it says because the colour stands out against the background and it is in simple front. They also use just
one photograph per front page to illustrate what their magazine is about. It is meant to be impressive and appealing
and entice the viewer to buy the magazine and read it. This photograph on the front will help them to compete
against other walking magazines and the clear title may stand out from other longer ones. The website again has the
same obvious and clear title so that you know what the magazine is called and it contains articles and interviews. It
doesn’t however have any exciting images to entice people onto the website however that may be because you have
to search for the website to find it and therefore they already wanted to read it and they wouldn’t need an exciting
picture to convince them. The words used in this magazine are for average readers not high or low level however there
is some specific terminology do to with walking and geography. The colour scheme on the front cover is green and
white and this therefore links in with nature as it is often connected to the colour green because of trees, grass and
plants etc. Additionally the colour white is connected with purity and that is what nature is, pure. Finally the double
page spread is set on a background of an entire photo which entices people to read as it is interesting and they want
to find out more about what happened in the photo. The colours are again white and then blue which also link to
nature as you could say the blue links to the sea or sky and therefore it all links back to the walking genre of the
magazine.
Task 1 Research: Tatler
Tatler is a British high class magazine focusing on lifestyle and fashion for women. Their target audience is mainly
females aged between 25 and 39 years with a large amount of disposable income per month and of the social
grade ABC1, they are also quite right-wing. The front cover unlike the other magazines that I researched has a
coloured background and a photograph on top of it. The photograph is of a beautiful woman who is in their age
range and therefore it will appeal to many women as they may think if they read that magazine they could be like
her. She is in a fashionable dress which is colour coordinated with the colours of the writing and page which link to
the aim of the magazine which is about fashion and lifestyle. The cover line on this specific front page is about
flirting and therefore the colour scheme used is pink, red and white as they all have links to love. The font used on
both the website and in the magazine is very proper and that may relate to the fact that their reader ship is mainly
middle to high class people and they are therefore trying to appeal to them. The double page spread contains one
very large picture and a big title, these stand out so that people read the article as they are eye catching. The
content of the article is direct as it is taking directly to the reader as though they know each other. This is
something that readers like as they may feel apart of a kind of ‘membership’. The level of writing is aimed at people
of a higher level The website has a very bold title which is in in black contrasting against the plain white
background. Which makes it clear and easy to read, in the same font which is proper and tidy. They also have a
promotion at the top left hand corner of the page which may be a way to get some more subscribers as people
often sign up for things if they thinks its free. Additionally they have their top articles laid out carefully and easily on
an open page which only has the title and headers above making it easy for the reader to view and control.
Task 1 Research: GQ (UK)
GQ also known as Gentleman's Quarterly is a men’s magazine focusing on fashion, style and culture including some other
subjects. Their main audience are men aged between 30 to 44 years with an average income of over $100,000 per anum.
They are very left wing and live in urban areas. The front cover is made up of a complete photograph of a celebrity. This
will entice people to buy to magazine because they want to know more about them and they may think that if they buy
the magazine that they could be more like him. The title is very big and bold with a contrast in colour so that it is clear
and stands out. The cover line is then in a big size with the name of the actor/model that is on the cover, this may get
peoples attention so they that buy the magazine. The front cover needs to stand out from all the other similar magazines
and therefore having a famous actor on the front will stand out and increase their sales. The font is big and bold and
more masculine as it is in all capitals and has lots of hard and sharp edges. The colour scheme used on this cover is blue
and white which is geared towards men as blue is stereotypically a masculine colour and white is just neutral. On the
double page spread and the website, the colours are very dark which are also masculine as lighter colours are often
linked to girls and women. They have used on whole page to put photographs on, this stand out front the white page to
its fight and contrasts it directly meaning that the article will be noticed. It also has a quote on where the title would
normally be which may grab people’s attention and again draw them into the article. The writing is set out clearly and
there isn’t much text which means it doesn't look to daunting to read and is therefore ore enticing for the viewer. The
website uses plain and simple colours like black and white as it makes things stand out. The title ‘GQ’ is obvious as it
stands out against the backdrop and it is in the same font as the magazine meaning it appeals to their audience. The
website has a page for each different subject it discusses with different articles under each one too. It is clear and easy to
use and the language used is direct as it talks to its readers as though they were having a conversation.
Proposal
 Working Title ‘Yorkshire Walking‘. I have called my magazine this because it is a countryside magazine which focuses on places to travel to
and walk in Yorkshire.
 Audience - The main audience for my countryside walking magazine will be adult men as they are statistically more likely to be interested in
outdoor activities like walking and hiking. However it is not limited to men as women also enjoy reading my magazine as they like these
activities. They will be between the ages 25 and 44 as they are old enough to want to read a magazine relating to being active and fit yet not
too young or old to partake in the activities that are mentioned yet other ages may be interested too. They will be middle to upper middle
class and of the social grade of AB as they have the money available to buy the magazine and travel to the places mentioned in it and
therefore they have a good job with a higher salary. The target market will mainly be heterosexual as there are statistically more straight men
than gay men and therefore there is a bigger target area and this statistic is also more likely to be interested in walking activities however
there is no definitive sexuality that is most interested in walking. Finally they will be be the socially conscious type A classification of
psychographic. This is because they are conscious about the countryside and the world around them and they want it look after it. They take
care by recycling and driving fuel efficient cars and therefore they would be interested in this magazine as it is about the countryside and
how to take advantage of beautiful places to travel and walk. They wold most likely live in Yorkshire or the surrounding area as they are
passionate about where they live and want to experience the most of it. However it may also target people who live in the city who want to
experience the countryside or escape the city for a break. People may want to read this magazine to get information about walking and the
countryside as they be curious and want to learn more. Hey may also read this magazine to become part of a new group, they may start
partaking in activities mentioned n the magazine and they may meet similar people whilst doing so. They may finally read my magazine for
enjoyment and relaxation as it will contain beautifully shot photos of the countryside landscapes and ideas or fantastic places to go.
Proposal
 Rational - Since the beginning of this year I have learnt how to use a camera and a tripod and this means that I can effectively and confidently take successful
photographs both in a studio and on location. I have also acquired the skills to use the Macs and Photoshop efficiently, which means that I can edit and change any
photographs that I take and I can alter or put effects on it too. I also have much more confidence in my decisions and personal preferences as they have worked well in
my past group projects. I now also have the knowledge of what planning I need to do for each project and I know how much detail should be put into each piece of
planning which means that my production should be more successful and smooth running. I decided to do a walking magazine as I enjoy that subject myself and I
thought that should make a magazine about something that I love. After studying Irn-Bru extensively and also making two quickly produced posters I now know what
is needed to produce print based media as before this course I had not experienced any of that. I also know what the general limitations are that come with making a
student production like geographical and logistical issues and how to overcome them.
 Project Concept- The project concept for my magazine is a walking and lifestyle magazine based around the Yorkshire area which contains information and facts about
walks and the countryside. I am going make a front cover for my magazine and it will be a whole portrait photograph of the countryside, it will have an offer on
saying free walk guide or something similar. It will also have cover lines that will intrigue the reader so that they want to buy the magazine. I will then make a double
page spread and I may write about a famous historical spot along a walk somewhere in the countryside in Yorkshire, it will include writing in columns and a large
portrait photograph of the subject I write about. I may also have some smaller photographs to highlight certain areas that I talk about. I will also be creating a website
which should be accessible and easy to use, it will be bright and airy with lots of beautiful photographs of Yorkshire’s countryside. I will also need to conduct some
primary research to find out what people of my target market want from a magazine of this subject. This will help me to decide what I will talk about in my magazine
and what will feature on the front cover.
 Evaluation – The main evaluation of my work will be done once I have finished all of the planning, photography and editing as then I can look at the finished product
as a whole. I will be analysing all aspects of my cover, website and double page spread including but not exclusively the the photographs, writing, font and colour. I will
go over the outcome and compare it to my original planning and see whether it has worked out to be similar or different than I had planned and then I will also
evaluate whether or not it is still appealing to the target audience.
Mock Front Cover
This is my mock front cover that I made to practice creating one. It contains one main photograph, a title,
date, barcode, free item explanation and multiple articles. I think that the cover contains everything that it
is meant to and that it definitely gets across what the magazine is about. I think that the picture is great
and that it would definitely stand out from other magazines as it is cute and if you are going to buy a dog
magazine then you already find them cute to begin with. The title is self explanatory which is positive as
people will know what is it going to be about which will also help to make it sell as if it is confusing they
will just go for one that they know is definitely about dogs or animals. The barcode and date on the front
are very professional as you could find them on every magazine front cover and therefore I used them as I
wanted mine to look as real and professional as possible. In the bottom right hand corner I put a line
about something being free. This is also used on many magazines to get people to buy it as everyone
loves free things. However in hindsight I think that it should have gone further near the top as when
magazines are stacked in a shop you cannot see the bottom and therefore in the future I think that I will
put the free item line nearer the top of the cover. I also added multiple lines about different articles that
would have been in my magazine. I decided to use ones that would be related to puppies and dogs and I
think I did well with that as all the topics are related. Finally the main disadvantage of this front cover is
that the words are slightly hard to read. This is because the photograph has a light coloured surrounding
and it was very hard to find a colour that you could read yet would still look good and aesthetically
pleasing. I now know that when I make my real front cover I need to be aware of what is surrounding the
main image.
Mock Double Page Spread
This is the first double page spread mock-up that I made. It contains text, a title and large
photograph. We did this on InDesign which was the first time that I had used it. Firstly to get the
photograph I had to create box over the double page on InDesign and get the measurements,
then create a new psd page using the same measurements. I then found the suitable photograph
and put it on the photoshop document until it fit the page. Then I put that picture on the InDesign
page and it fit over the whole spread perfectly. I really like this picture as it really stands out and is
eye catching which is what you want from an article. It is also a fantastic photograph and it links in
with my own magazine idea as it is to do with the countryside. Next, I found an article online
which I cold use for the writing. I had to create the text boxes were I wanted them so that they
followed on from each other yet also left room for the photograph. I then added the text in and
made sure it fit all of the text boxes perfectly. I then had to change the font and colour so that it
was suitable for the article. I think that the font is good however the colour was really hard to get
right. This is because the picture surrounding the cow is an odd colour and so to make the text
legible I had to add a black outline to it which was not what I wanted to do. This has made me
aware that I need to focus not only on the main image but the surroundings too so that you can
read my article properly. I do however think that the text looks good as you can see the cows and
still see that the text flows on and it doesn’t look boring. There also isn’t too much text as it is only
in thin columns and doesn’t go right from the top to the bottom. Finally I think that the title is
good as it is funny and eye catching however it needs to be bigger and stand out more.
Mock Double Page Spread
This is the second double page spread that I made to practice for the real one. It
contains one photograph that is A4, another little one, a title and some text. I think that
technically this one is more successful however I feel as though it is a little boring. Firstly,
there is less text and therefore isn’t over whelming to look at however in hindsight it
isn’t equally laid out which isn’t very professional and it looks boring as it is just words
on a white background. The title however is easier to make out and is clearer and
therefore more eye catching, yet still somehow boring. I think that to make this more
successful I would have to change the colour and font so that it stands out more and
looks better. I also added a small photo into the text on the left hand side to give some
context to the article which was about adult male deer. However I think that it is too big
and doesn’t really fit in right and that if I did it again I would have to use a border of
some kind or put it on a slant to make it more interesting. On the other side I decided to
make the whole page just a photograph of a deer. This is eye catching as you don’t
often see deer and therefore this may catch the readers attention. It is linked to the
article as it is about deer and therefore is there for a reason. However I still feel as
though there isn’t much flow between the two pages and that maybe I should have left a
white outline or border around the photo to make it seem as though it is apart of the
article or something. Altogether even though you couldn’t read the words that well, the
first double page spread mock up is more interesting and better than this one.
Mock Website - Wix
This is the first website mock-up that I made and I did it by using the website
builder, Wix. I started off by having to choose a template design which was easy as
I had this kind of set up in mind already. Although there was no set templates for a
magazines website so I decided to use one that was created for photography as I
felt that they were similar. I wanted the articles to be in a box not just a list so that
they looked more interesting and they also have a picture behind them which
makes them more enticing for the reader to click on rather than just loads of
boring text. Although it contains all of the information on the home page that I
needed I couldn’t change everything to look the way wanted it to look. I wanted
the boxes in different places but it didn’t look very good on their setup. Before this
task I had never created a website before and so I have definitely learnt some new
things. I have also learnt how to use this website, although I didn’t like it very much.
I don’t think that there are enough options and I think that the templates are too
constricting and stop you from changing it around as much. I also wanted the top
green picture to be shorter and thinner yet it wouldn’t let me do it and therefore I
was stuck with it. It also left me no room for a logo which was disappointing and so
I definitely know that when I make my website I will not be using this builder as it
doesn’t fit my needs.
Mock Website – WordPress
This is the second website mock up that I made and I did it using the website
builder WordPress. I defiantly liked this one much more than the other one
which was Wix as I felt that it was easier to use and the layout was nicer. This
is also an actual website where as the other one wasn’t which means that I can
add to it and change it whenever I want too which is a bonus. It also had
room for a logo which I think is great as it adds to the page and shows what
the page will be about as the words ‘Yorkshire Walking’ aren’t much of a
brand themselves. For example ‘Gentleman Quarterly’ have ‘GQ’ which stands
out and is recognisable meaning they get more repeat customers. I also felt
like the layout was really simple yet effective. It had everything you could want
and it would definitely be easy for the readers to use as it was extremely
obvious. I also learnt even more about website building as before this I had
never done anything at all and I have now done two and so I feel that when I
come to making my real one I’ll be ready and it will be much better than it
could have been if I hadn’t practiced as much. I also feel as though this has
helped as it’s made me realise what exactly it is that I need on there which I
hadn’t already thought of for example the contact us page. It’s also made me
aware of which pictures I’ll need to take as I will obviously need more than
just my front cover and so I think that this exercise has helped me
significantly.

These are the flat plans for
my magazine front cover.
They are all based around
the same idea that the main
image will be the entire
background and there will
be no white border. I also
decided after doing my
mock up to have the free
prize near the top so that
the readers will be enticed
when it is on sale, on a rack.
I also think adding an extra
image will make people
want to buy it to see what is
inside. The masthead will
be in the top left hand
corner going across right as
that is where people’s
attention is drawn too first
and the main cover line will
be underneath as to draw
people in and get their
attention.

This is the flat plan for my double page spread, it is simplistic however it will contains everything that is necessary. The first one will have an image over the entire
page however the writing will be in the spaces around the focus of the image which will most likely be sky and cloud meaning you will be able to read it clearly where
as the second one will only have an image on the second page so that you can focus on it and see it in detail.

These are the plans for my
website, the flat plan for it
most likely wont look like
that as it will depend on the
layout that I use however it
will still contains all of the
main contents like picture,
title and menu and
therefore I thought that it
was better to make one
rather than not at all and
then I wont leave anything
out. For the drop down I put
each heading of the
different pages on my menu
and then recent articles
underneath as if it was a real
website and magazine, each
week every article would fit
under one of those
categories and you would
find it in date order under
those headings.
Style Sheet
Colours
Fonts
These are the potential
colour schemes that will
go on the cover and
double page spread of
my magazine. I chose
these as they are all quite
neutral as this magazine
is for both men and
women. They will each
go with white which is
the other colour for
words and titles as that is
neutral too. Additionally I
think that the yellow
would be a good choice
as it will not clash with
anything in the
photographs as they will
be mostly blues and
greens yet it wont be to
bold or stand out too
much.
I have booked a camera, photography SD card and a spare
battery for the weekend from the 19th – 23rd whilst I am away
in the Dales. I will be taking all of my own photos on location
at Bolton Abbe and the Devonshire Arms. I will need a
portrait photograph for my cover page, a small square or
landscape image to also go on the front cover, a small square
or landscape photo of my free prize and then multiple
landscape and portrait photographs of the hotel for my
double page spread.
Images
• Avenir
• Consolas
• Palatino
These are the choices that I made for
my fonts, I will try each one out once I
have my photographs to see which
one is most suitable along side the
colours and words. I will use a
consistent font throughout yet may
use a slightly thicker or thinner
version.

Research & Proposal
For the first stage of my print rotation I had to research existing magazines to find out what codes and conventions they used so that I could apply the
same theory to my magazine. I looked at magazines similar to the one I made like Walk or Country Living and then others that were more varied like
GQ and Tatler. I think that there were many strengths to my research as I looked at lots of factors including font, colours and layouts and even found
out each magazines target audience. All of this helped me to understand what kind of things I needed to include on my magazine so that it would
appeal to the appropriate audience that I wanted it to. However I also think that were many weaknesses to my research as I’m not sure if I looked into
each magazine enough. This is because it is the first time I have researched magazines and I wasn’t sure how much detail I needed to go into, I also
didn’t know exactly what I was looking for. I should have done more specific research into each code and convention yet I didn’t. because of this my
final product may not be as good as it could have been as I may have been able to make it more appealing if I had a deeper understanding of how
other magazines did that themselves. However the even though I didn’t do much research I think it was still quality and that is better than quantity and
therefore it may not negatively impact my final product. The research that I did do helped me to decide which fonts, colours and images to use. It
showed me that each different type of font, for example, can effect the way someone perceives that magazine and that I had to carefully pick each of
them according to who my target audience would be. Another part of my research was finding out who read the magazines that I research and then
who read the magazines that were similar t the one I was making. This was vey important and then obvious shaped how I made my magazines front
cover, double page spread and website. It also directly affected what the content and aesthetics would be as I had t fit them to the audience. After I had
done all of my research I started to do my proposal which consisted of about five main points, the title, audience, rationale, concept and evaluation. I
decided that my magazine would be called ‘Yorkshire Walking’ as it was quite self explanatory as it was a Yorkshire based magazine about walking and
the countryside. When I looked at other similar walking or country magazines they had similar quite plain names and so I felt that it was the best route
as if someone was wanting country walking magazine then they would know that mine was right and there would be no confusion. I think that my
proposal was thorough and successful, the strengths of it are definitely that it helped me to make get my ideas down on one concise document so that
I could go back to it to make sure I was staying on track. However there may be some weakness to it and they could be that the evaluation section of it
was quite poor as I didn’t feel that I had much to right however looking back I could have filled it in more thoroughly and it may have helped me with
my final evaluation and it may have made my final products better as I would have known exactly what to do. However overall I think that I definitely
did a good proposal and there wasn’t much that I could improve on other than the evaluation section yet I think that it positive impacted on my final
products as I was prepared and knew what I needed to create.

Production Research
My production research consisted of me creating mock ups of my front cover, double page spread and website so that I could
practise making each and find out what was needed to do so. I started with my front cover which I think was successful. Making this
front cover made me realise how important the image and it’s surroundings were as before I didn’t know that. This definitely made a
big impact on my final product as that was very important so that my cover was legible. I also learnt a lot about fonts and colours and
that you needed a strict theme that would fit with the brand so ha all of the cover lines on the cover fitted together well. I also made
two double page spread mock ups and these were very important in shaping my final products as I learnt a lot whilst making these
which were necessary in my real production. I do however this that my mock up front cover was successful especially for a first try as
it was enticing and I had all the main parts of magazine like barcode, big title and multiple cover lines meaning it was acceptable and
was a good base to learn from. Firstly I learnt how to use InDesign which was vital in making my double page spread. It made me
more competent and sure of what I was doing and therefore more sure in my decisions which made me create something that I
wouldn’t have been able to before. Doing this also made me aware how how you need the picture to fit with the fonts and colours
that are used so that readers can actually read it. I made two different types of mock ups one with a whole photograph covering both
ages and one with just an A4 photograph and these helped me to understand how important the amount of words were and how
they are set out matters as it could be boring or overwhelming and therefore unappealing for the viewer. I also make two mock up
websites using two different sites Wix and WordPress. I first used Wix to create a website however it was very simplistic and because I
had no previous experience of website building I didn’t take it much further. This made me realise that everything on the page has to
be appealing and interesting and that there needs to be things that draw people in. Because I felt like this website builder wasn’t for
me I decided to use WordPress to create a second mock up website however I think that that was actually worse and unsuccessful
especially compared to the one I built on Wix. This is because the second one had only one link to another page and I couldn’t get
the pages to have multiple articles under neither tem without changing the title to the table of that article and that wasn’t acceptable
for my idea. I think that the WordPress website is very limiting and is probably better for blogging not for a magazine website which
needs a menu with multiple pages and articles every month. Overall this definitely impacted my decision about my real website and
final product as I knew how to use the website builders properly and how to make the website just how I wanted it so that it would be
appealing and enticing to the readers and viewers.

Planning
I did lots of planning for the print rotation which mainly consisted of flat plans and time management. The first thing that I started to plan was
the flat plans and layouts. These took a considerable amount of time but were extremely effective in helping me to create both my front cover
and my double page spreads. I think that the flat plans were very strong and because I made multiple versions of each it meant that I had
choice when I started to properly create them. They definitely positively effected my final product as because I had them it meant that I could
create more than one cover or double page spread that weren't exactly the same or set out similarly. This meant that I could create a better
product each time as I could set them out as I had researched yet change them up depending on the images or colours used. This also meant
that my work looked professional as I got my ideas from existing magazines and therefore mine will look realistic. If there were any
weaknesses or restrictions that came from using the flat plans it would be that they limited the creativity that I had when setting up and create
the pages however I think that there are only a certain number of ways you can set it out and therefore it probably didn’t affect m work that
seriously. I also made a similar tree diagram or flat plan for my website which was very helpful as it made it much easier when trying to set up
my website from scratch. I don’t think that it had any weaknesses other than that it was only small and wasn’t full of information but it was still
helpful and it definitely positively impacted my final products. I also made a table for my production schedule which was meant to help me
with my time management. I think that doing this was quite pointless as I just did the work once I had finished the previous task and I had
many a day or two were I had no specific work planned. This therefore was very effective for myself as you cant always plan how long
everything will take. Even though it didn’t negatively impact anything at all yet it did it positively impact my final products either. The final part
of my planning was my style sheet which contained colours, fonts and location of images so that when I started production I didn’t need to
source them in a rush and not get it right. This really helped me as I just got the hex code for the colours and I was ready to use it. This whole
sheet was very successful and helped me to product a lot. If anything it may not have been detailed enough however I already knew what kind
of thing I wanted and therefore I didn’t fell that I needed to go into further detail. I don’t think that this negatively impacted my production as
it turned out well and I used the colours and fonts that I had planned for. One final thing that I also planned for before starting my creative
production was the writing of my article and cover lines. I think that my article was quite strong as it was engaging and interesting yet was not
too long or too short. It was also very malleable so I could take bits out to help it fit on my double page spread. Because I had already done
this at home it meant that it wouldn’t slow down my production and I could plan what I wanted to take photos of as I already knew what I was
making my double page spread about. Overall I think that my double page spread and all of my planning definitely positively impact my final
products as they helped m to plan and fit everything in.

Front Cover
I think that my front cover for my magazine Yorkshire Walking was very successful and looked very realistic. Firstly I believe that it had many
strengths, to begin I think that the photograph used on my final product was very professional and appealing, the colours on it are happy and
portray the countryside as they contain lots of green, brown and blue which are the main colours found there. I used Photoshop to change the sky
as I wasn’t happy with it as you ca see on attempt number 1 on slide 24. After I had changed that I think the cover looked more realistic and the
words were more legible. I used Photoshop to create the whole thing which were skills that I have learnt throughout the past five months on this
course and I have definitely added to them on this project and when I need to use it again I think I will be faster and better at it because of this
product. I made many changes throughout the process of making the front cover to make it more successful, firstly was how to make it easy to
read all of the writing. Because this was something that had come up when making the mock ups I knew that it was important to consider this
carefully however I think that I tackled that properly and that my final product mirrors that as you can easily read all of the cover lines and words. If
there are any weaknesses on my final product they would have to be that the cover lines are quite long. Usually on magazines they use a few
words to entice viewers to read yet on mine I wrote a short sentence for each or a question. However I do think that the target audience for this
magazine would be okay with that as the topics are ones in which you need information to know if you want to read or not and therefore I do not
think that it s a huge mistake and I don’t think that it will negatively impact my magazine. My research was a huge factor in creating my cover as I
knew that every aspect has to fit perfectly with one another so that it fitted with the brand and looked good. I used all of this by making sure I
remembered the main issues I had with my mock up, they were mainly being able to read the text, the colours and the picture and I managed to
control and plan all aspects of that and therefore I didn’t come across any of the problems that I had encountered because of my research. If I
could improve my product now I think that I would make the issue date more legible as that was mentioned in my feedback on my survey. I would
also reduce the length of my cover lines slightly which would also make room so that but could see more of the photograph. I think that this may
have had an impact on how likely someone is to buy my magazine as if there is too much text they get put off and if they cant really see the
picture then nothing is pulling them in but if I changed it they may be enticed by the photograph that you can see clearly. My end product
definitely turned out better than I had thought it would as it looks very realistic. When I made the mock ups I thought that I couldn’t get any better
than that however using Photoshop extends my skill set every time and so I improved massively when making my product. Additionally, when this
is compared to a real magazine mine looks very successful as it genuinely looks realistic. You can see that the existing magazine and mine have all
the same components and features on the cover and that they are set out in a similar way using the same codes and conventions that real
magazines use. Overall I am very happy with my magazine cover as production went well.

Double Page Spreads
I made two different versions of the same article for my double page spread and I have decided that I prefer the 2nd draft as it is
more interesting for the readers. Firstly I think that my double page spread had many strengths but most importantly being the
picture that I used as the background. It is very unusual and funny and this therefore makes the pages stand out and it would then
get the readers attention when they are flipping through the magazine. The photograph itself is quite well taken as its unusual and
eye-catching. The lines of the wall and the hills behind also conjoin where the cow is which draws your attention to that one point. I
additionally photo shopped the sky onto the photo as the original was very white, cloudy and unappealing yet this one is much
brighter and it makes the photograph look better. Another strength would be the positioning of the text as it is placed in the areas
where the sky is. One of the aspects of my double page spread that I focused on was if my text was legible because in my mock ups
I found it difficult to read my writing, therefore I think my final product turned out well as you could not only read it but it was at
the top of the page which is where you attention is drawn and it also looks good in the space above the picture. If there were any
weaknesses to my double page spread it may be that my writing was too small and therefore slightly harder to read however there
wasn’t enough room to make it bigger and I think that if it was printed out on A4 you would be able to read it well. If I were going
to improve I think that I would have to find a way to link my double page spread to my front cover and website other than content
as at the moment when you look at them there is no direct link other than the font that I used. I also made a first draft which
included a picture on only on A4 side and the rest was text however I think that was too plain and boring as it wouldn’t catch the
readers eyes as they were flipping through it. Compared to the flat plan that I made when planning for my final product I think it
went directly to plan as both of my drafts turned out just as I had wanted them too which is great as the way I had planned them
was after I had research existed double page spreads. I think that compared to real ones mine was quite good as it contains the
same things like the title, by line and actual article. However in the kind of magazine I made many of the articles are guides and lists
of information and therefore in that respect mine aren't similar however if you compare it to a similar one then it was successful and
realistic. Overall I am very happy with my double page spread as I think the article was well written as it is interesting and would
hold a viewers. In addition to the main image that I used I could possible have put a small picture in the left hand corner of the
page to show the place that the article was talking about in a bit more detail however I think that the title and article and picture
work well together to create a god double page spread.

Website
For my final product on the print rotation I had to make a website for my magazine Yorkshire Walking. I made one first draft on WordPress
yet then changed to Wix as I felt it had more capabilities and I thought that it fitted the type of website that I wanted better than the other
website builder. I think that my website has many, strengths, one being the aesthetics of the whole website. It is neutral and therefore suitable
for both men and women of many ages. It has lots of images on which are mainly of the countryside or Bolton Abbey which is in Yorkshire
and therefore the content is relevant to the magazine. My website is also very easy to use which is something that you want especially if some
of the people using it are from an older generation and may not be up to date with technology. It is smooth and contains relevant things
from a gallery page with Yorkshire photographs to a page with the latest issue of the magazine on. If there are any weaknesses to my website
they would be that one, on the picture boxes which are links, the word are not links as I couldn’t get them to be one. This is annoying as in
my feedback I received an answer saying that I should improve it yet Wix will not let me. It would make it easier to use and more realistic and
professional yet I couldn’t alter it. Additionally I think that apart from the layout of the header ‘Yorkshire Walking’ there isn’t much that links it
to the cover or double page spread. This is a problem as I haven’t used the same colours yet I did that because many magazines change their
colours depending on the photograph and so I felt that I shouldn't stick to only one colour plan and therefore neutral was the best option. I
also think that the brand name/title is the most important part of a brand or magazine and therefore keeping the same layout brigs across
the brand from the cover to the website meaning that hey are linked together. They are additionally linked via the photographs and content
as they are the same for both. If I were to improve my website I would definitely add more content and more headers onto the menu to
capture the full spectrum that my magazine follows. I also think that every time I now use website builders, especially Wix, I will just get better
as I have learnt a whole new skill on this project as I had never learnt that before and each time I practice I will just get better It will definitely
help me in the future even if not with print then in other aspects of media. My original plan website definitely changed as once I had started
to build it as I obviously did not know what issues would come up. The main thing that I changed was the layout of the front home page as I
wanted there to be pictures with links not a box with an insert in. this is because photographs are more appealing and interesting than lots of
words and the fact that the entire box is a link is easy to use. I did also however change the menu options that I decided on yet that was only
because I had to do three pages and I didn’t have the content at tis time to fill the other pages. I think that despite that my website turned
but well and that it is easy to use. I think that if you compare it to come other websites that are similar the other big thing that differentiates
them is the lack on content on mine which is obviously understandable. Other than that I feel as though mine is very professional as it has
different options and a clean and easy layout.

Final Result
Altogether I am very happy with the result of my final products as I think that they are realistic, professional and interesting.
Throughout the process I tried to link all three products, my cover, double page spread and website, together so that they all fit
under the same brand and look alike. I think that for the most part I did that successfully. I used the same font of ‘Palatino’
throughout the process and the only thing that wasn’t Palatino was the title for the double page spread as the Assassin one gave it
more of an edge. I also used the same logo on the front cover and the website so that the bran/logo carried over and it was obvious
that it was the same magazine. Even though the masthead/title was a different colour I didn’t think that that mattered because
magazines often use different colours on their magazine covers each month and mainly black online and so I thought that being
back on the website would encompass the whole magazine and then the colour would just change each month according to the
topics and photographs used. I didn’t think that it was appropriate to put the logo on the double page spread as magazines do not
usually do that and that is therefore why that bit may not link up in that respect. My final products are also content aware which
means that everything on my website and in my magazine is based towards the target audience that I decided on when I made my
proposal. It is therefore more appealing to my target audience and would increase the amount of people who subscribe to the
magazine and regularly buy it. The brand that I created defiantly follows the same original plan that I made at the beginning of this
rotation and I think that it even went better than I had planned for as everything went according to plan and there was no need for
any contingency time. I also think that mine is very good compared to real existing magazines as they all have the same main frame
and features which makes mine realistic and successful. After I had finished my three final products I made a survey to get advice on
what to change and feedback on what was good. There were many positive responses to my magazine mainly focusing around the
cover, photos and the ease of using the website. The negative comments were mainly based around the fact that the people who
answered my survey didn’t want to buy it yet that was because they weren't in my target audience at all and their results could
therefore be classed as bias. Altogether I m very happy with the end result as I think it looks good and is relevant to the task I was
asked to complete. It also fits with the proposal that I created and would definitely appeal to the target audience that I picked.

Magazine and Website PowerPoint

  • 1. Magazine and Website BY GEORGIA BROWN
  • 2. Task 1 Research: Living North Living North is a magazine aimed at people who live in the northern region of England. It contains articles on food and dining, walking, the northern countryside and lifestyle. Their target audience are people of a higher social grade from middle to upper class with a grade of AB and at an age of 30+. They mainly target women however not exclusively. The front cover of the magazine contains bright colours which stand out and create a fresh and appealing look. The colours used are mainly pink and green which may be used as a way to appeal to their target market which is mainly women female. This is because these colours are associated with women and stereotypically this the kind of colours what they prefer. The green may also link towards the fact that this is a magazine for people who live in the north and in the countryside; not in big cities like London. This means that the viewers connect the green colours n the cover to the countryside and it therefore relates to green fields or trees. On the other hand the website is not as bright and as a plainer colour scheme this may be because the website has a larger male reading base than the magazine as you can easily pick an article you want and avoid those which do not interest you by merely typing it in. Additionally the hard copy of the magazine may need to be brighter to stand out from other magazines where as if you go to the website you have gone their on purpose and are unlikely to have stumbled upon it unlike with the magazine. On the cover of the Living North magazine there is almost always only one main image used and this should appeal highly to the target audience. It is meant to be very aesthetically pleasing and may be a picture of food, interior design or a landscape. It should show the reader what kind of thing will be inside and additionally on the website they show a larger image in the center of the screen to get the readers attention and draw them in. the title stands out dramatically on both the website and hard copy as it is a different colour to the background. This helps the reader to find the name that they are looking for and promotes their brand additionally. The written work is of a high level aimed towards people who work in management or above.
  • 3. Task 1 Research: Country Living Country Living is a home and lifestyle magazine targeted towards people who have a higher income and live in rural areas. It focuses on lifestyle, interior design, food and the countryside and contains articles with advice on country living. The target audience for this magazine are people of a high to middle class social grade with a grade of AB at an age of 30+, they are most likely a home owner and live in the countryside. It mainly targets women and this is why it contains quite feminine coloured fonts on the cover. The colours of the fonts are light and airy and therefore it appeals to their target market as the magazine will stand out from others around it. Additionally the whole front cover has lots of bright colours so that it looks more appealing to women. However in contrast their website has a much plainer colour scheme which may be because it uses the pictures to entice people to read each specific article as it doesn’t need to stand out from other websites as you go to that website on purpose you don’t stumble there unlike the magazine which has competitors directly next to it. The cover of each Country Living magazine generally contains one single photograph and it is mainly linked to either the outdoors, food or home interior. This is because it needs to tell people exactly what is inside and it does that perfectly. The photographs are also very enticing and beautiful which will draw the reader in and make them buy it. Their title on both their hard copy and their website is centered and very large. It stands out dramatically as on the magazine it is a different colour to the background and on the website it is cut out of a darker photograph so that stands out. The actual font used by them is quite proper and feminine and the other fronts used on the front cover are swirly and girly and beautiful which links to the subjects that they are talking about and is very appropriate. The language used is written for a person at a higher level who may work high up in management of other such jobs, this means that they have a high capability and the language used suits them. They also use lots adjectives to make the reader think the certain things that they want them t in order to get them t buy the magazine. For example the ‘Romance’ of roses may make people want to know how to be romantic. And therefore they may buy it.
  • 4. Task 1 Research: Walk The Walk magazine created by the Ramblers Charity is the most popular walking magazine in England with a subscription of around 90,000 readers. Their target audience are active adults aged 18-42 however not exclusively. Their target audience is mostly male which may be why there are mainly men on the front cover of their magazines so that it appeals to them. They have a slightly above average income and are middle class with a social grade of a B. The title on the front cover is very big and easy to read, even with the photograph of the man in front of it you know exactly what it says because the colour stands out against the background and it is in simple front. They also use just one photograph per front page to illustrate what their magazine is about. It is meant to be impressive and appealing and entice the viewer to buy the magazine and read it. This photograph on the front will help them to compete against other walking magazines and the clear title may stand out from other longer ones. The website again has the same obvious and clear title so that you know what the magazine is called and it contains articles and interviews. It doesn’t however have any exciting images to entice people onto the website however that may be because you have to search for the website to find it and therefore they already wanted to read it and they wouldn’t need an exciting picture to convince them. The words used in this magazine are for average readers not high or low level however there is some specific terminology do to with walking and geography. The colour scheme on the front cover is green and white and this therefore links in with nature as it is often connected to the colour green because of trees, grass and plants etc. Additionally the colour white is connected with purity and that is what nature is, pure. Finally the double page spread is set on a background of an entire photo which entices people to read as it is interesting and they want to find out more about what happened in the photo. The colours are again white and then blue which also link to nature as you could say the blue links to the sea or sky and therefore it all links back to the walking genre of the magazine.
  • 5. Task 1 Research: Tatler Tatler is a British high class magazine focusing on lifestyle and fashion for women. Their target audience is mainly females aged between 25 and 39 years with a large amount of disposable income per month and of the social grade ABC1, they are also quite right-wing. The front cover unlike the other magazines that I researched has a coloured background and a photograph on top of it. The photograph is of a beautiful woman who is in their age range and therefore it will appeal to many women as they may think if they read that magazine they could be like her. She is in a fashionable dress which is colour coordinated with the colours of the writing and page which link to the aim of the magazine which is about fashion and lifestyle. The cover line on this specific front page is about flirting and therefore the colour scheme used is pink, red and white as they all have links to love. The font used on both the website and in the magazine is very proper and that may relate to the fact that their reader ship is mainly middle to high class people and they are therefore trying to appeal to them. The double page spread contains one very large picture and a big title, these stand out so that people read the article as they are eye catching. The content of the article is direct as it is taking directly to the reader as though they know each other. This is something that readers like as they may feel apart of a kind of ‘membership’. The level of writing is aimed at people of a higher level The website has a very bold title which is in in black contrasting against the plain white background. Which makes it clear and easy to read, in the same font which is proper and tidy. They also have a promotion at the top left hand corner of the page which may be a way to get some more subscribers as people often sign up for things if they thinks its free. Additionally they have their top articles laid out carefully and easily on an open page which only has the title and headers above making it easy for the reader to view and control.
  • 6. Task 1 Research: GQ (UK) GQ also known as Gentleman's Quarterly is a men’s magazine focusing on fashion, style and culture including some other subjects. Their main audience are men aged between 30 to 44 years with an average income of over $100,000 per anum. They are very left wing and live in urban areas. The front cover is made up of a complete photograph of a celebrity. This will entice people to buy to magazine because they want to know more about them and they may think that if they buy the magazine that they could be more like him. The title is very big and bold with a contrast in colour so that it is clear and stands out. The cover line is then in a big size with the name of the actor/model that is on the cover, this may get peoples attention so they that buy the magazine. The front cover needs to stand out from all the other similar magazines and therefore having a famous actor on the front will stand out and increase their sales. The font is big and bold and more masculine as it is in all capitals and has lots of hard and sharp edges. The colour scheme used on this cover is blue and white which is geared towards men as blue is stereotypically a masculine colour and white is just neutral. On the double page spread and the website, the colours are very dark which are also masculine as lighter colours are often linked to girls and women. They have used on whole page to put photographs on, this stand out front the white page to its fight and contrasts it directly meaning that the article will be noticed. It also has a quote on where the title would normally be which may grab people’s attention and again draw them into the article. The writing is set out clearly and there isn’t much text which means it doesn't look to daunting to read and is therefore ore enticing for the viewer. The website uses plain and simple colours like black and white as it makes things stand out. The title ‘GQ’ is obvious as it stands out against the backdrop and it is in the same font as the magazine meaning it appeals to their audience. The website has a page for each different subject it discusses with different articles under each one too. It is clear and easy to use and the language used is direct as it talks to its readers as though they were having a conversation.
  • 7. Proposal  Working Title ‘Yorkshire Walking‘. I have called my magazine this because it is a countryside magazine which focuses on places to travel to and walk in Yorkshire.  Audience - The main audience for my countryside walking magazine will be adult men as they are statistically more likely to be interested in outdoor activities like walking and hiking. However it is not limited to men as women also enjoy reading my magazine as they like these activities. They will be between the ages 25 and 44 as they are old enough to want to read a magazine relating to being active and fit yet not too young or old to partake in the activities that are mentioned yet other ages may be interested too. They will be middle to upper middle class and of the social grade of AB as they have the money available to buy the magazine and travel to the places mentioned in it and therefore they have a good job with a higher salary. The target market will mainly be heterosexual as there are statistically more straight men than gay men and therefore there is a bigger target area and this statistic is also more likely to be interested in walking activities however there is no definitive sexuality that is most interested in walking. Finally they will be be the socially conscious type A classification of psychographic. This is because they are conscious about the countryside and the world around them and they want it look after it. They take care by recycling and driving fuel efficient cars and therefore they would be interested in this magazine as it is about the countryside and how to take advantage of beautiful places to travel and walk. They wold most likely live in Yorkshire or the surrounding area as they are passionate about where they live and want to experience the most of it. However it may also target people who live in the city who want to experience the countryside or escape the city for a break. People may want to read this magazine to get information about walking and the countryside as they be curious and want to learn more. Hey may also read this magazine to become part of a new group, they may start partaking in activities mentioned n the magazine and they may meet similar people whilst doing so. They may finally read my magazine for enjoyment and relaxation as it will contain beautifully shot photos of the countryside landscapes and ideas or fantastic places to go.
  • 8. Proposal  Rational - Since the beginning of this year I have learnt how to use a camera and a tripod and this means that I can effectively and confidently take successful photographs both in a studio and on location. I have also acquired the skills to use the Macs and Photoshop efficiently, which means that I can edit and change any photographs that I take and I can alter or put effects on it too. I also have much more confidence in my decisions and personal preferences as they have worked well in my past group projects. I now also have the knowledge of what planning I need to do for each project and I know how much detail should be put into each piece of planning which means that my production should be more successful and smooth running. I decided to do a walking magazine as I enjoy that subject myself and I thought that should make a magazine about something that I love. After studying Irn-Bru extensively and also making two quickly produced posters I now know what is needed to produce print based media as before this course I had not experienced any of that. I also know what the general limitations are that come with making a student production like geographical and logistical issues and how to overcome them.  Project Concept- The project concept for my magazine is a walking and lifestyle magazine based around the Yorkshire area which contains information and facts about walks and the countryside. I am going make a front cover for my magazine and it will be a whole portrait photograph of the countryside, it will have an offer on saying free walk guide or something similar. It will also have cover lines that will intrigue the reader so that they want to buy the magazine. I will then make a double page spread and I may write about a famous historical spot along a walk somewhere in the countryside in Yorkshire, it will include writing in columns and a large portrait photograph of the subject I write about. I may also have some smaller photographs to highlight certain areas that I talk about. I will also be creating a website which should be accessible and easy to use, it will be bright and airy with lots of beautiful photographs of Yorkshire’s countryside. I will also need to conduct some primary research to find out what people of my target market want from a magazine of this subject. This will help me to decide what I will talk about in my magazine and what will feature on the front cover.  Evaluation – The main evaluation of my work will be done once I have finished all of the planning, photography and editing as then I can look at the finished product as a whole. I will be analysing all aspects of my cover, website and double page spread including but not exclusively the the photographs, writing, font and colour. I will go over the outcome and compare it to my original planning and see whether it has worked out to be similar or different than I had planned and then I will also evaluate whether or not it is still appealing to the target audience.
  • 9. Mock Front Cover This is my mock front cover that I made to practice creating one. It contains one main photograph, a title, date, barcode, free item explanation and multiple articles. I think that the cover contains everything that it is meant to and that it definitely gets across what the magazine is about. I think that the picture is great and that it would definitely stand out from other magazines as it is cute and if you are going to buy a dog magazine then you already find them cute to begin with. The title is self explanatory which is positive as people will know what is it going to be about which will also help to make it sell as if it is confusing they will just go for one that they know is definitely about dogs or animals. The barcode and date on the front are very professional as you could find them on every magazine front cover and therefore I used them as I wanted mine to look as real and professional as possible. In the bottom right hand corner I put a line about something being free. This is also used on many magazines to get people to buy it as everyone loves free things. However in hindsight I think that it should have gone further near the top as when magazines are stacked in a shop you cannot see the bottom and therefore in the future I think that I will put the free item line nearer the top of the cover. I also added multiple lines about different articles that would have been in my magazine. I decided to use ones that would be related to puppies and dogs and I think I did well with that as all the topics are related. Finally the main disadvantage of this front cover is that the words are slightly hard to read. This is because the photograph has a light coloured surrounding and it was very hard to find a colour that you could read yet would still look good and aesthetically pleasing. I now know that when I make my real front cover I need to be aware of what is surrounding the main image.
  • 10. Mock Double Page Spread This is the first double page spread mock-up that I made. It contains text, a title and large photograph. We did this on InDesign which was the first time that I had used it. Firstly to get the photograph I had to create box over the double page on InDesign and get the measurements, then create a new psd page using the same measurements. I then found the suitable photograph and put it on the photoshop document until it fit the page. Then I put that picture on the InDesign page and it fit over the whole spread perfectly. I really like this picture as it really stands out and is eye catching which is what you want from an article. It is also a fantastic photograph and it links in with my own magazine idea as it is to do with the countryside. Next, I found an article online which I cold use for the writing. I had to create the text boxes were I wanted them so that they followed on from each other yet also left room for the photograph. I then added the text in and made sure it fit all of the text boxes perfectly. I then had to change the font and colour so that it was suitable for the article. I think that the font is good however the colour was really hard to get right. This is because the picture surrounding the cow is an odd colour and so to make the text legible I had to add a black outline to it which was not what I wanted to do. This has made me aware that I need to focus not only on the main image but the surroundings too so that you can read my article properly. I do however think that the text looks good as you can see the cows and still see that the text flows on and it doesn’t look boring. There also isn’t too much text as it is only in thin columns and doesn’t go right from the top to the bottom. Finally I think that the title is good as it is funny and eye catching however it needs to be bigger and stand out more.
  • 11. Mock Double Page Spread This is the second double page spread that I made to practice for the real one. It contains one photograph that is A4, another little one, a title and some text. I think that technically this one is more successful however I feel as though it is a little boring. Firstly, there is less text and therefore isn’t over whelming to look at however in hindsight it isn’t equally laid out which isn’t very professional and it looks boring as it is just words on a white background. The title however is easier to make out and is clearer and therefore more eye catching, yet still somehow boring. I think that to make this more successful I would have to change the colour and font so that it stands out more and looks better. I also added a small photo into the text on the left hand side to give some context to the article which was about adult male deer. However I think that it is too big and doesn’t really fit in right and that if I did it again I would have to use a border of some kind or put it on a slant to make it more interesting. On the other side I decided to make the whole page just a photograph of a deer. This is eye catching as you don’t often see deer and therefore this may catch the readers attention. It is linked to the article as it is about deer and therefore is there for a reason. However I still feel as though there isn’t much flow between the two pages and that maybe I should have left a white outline or border around the photo to make it seem as though it is apart of the article or something. Altogether even though you couldn’t read the words that well, the first double page spread mock up is more interesting and better than this one.
  • 12. Mock Website - Wix This is the first website mock-up that I made and I did it by using the website builder, Wix. I started off by having to choose a template design which was easy as I had this kind of set up in mind already. Although there was no set templates for a magazines website so I decided to use one that was created for photography as I felt that they were similar. I wanted the articles to be in a box not just a list so that they looked more interesting and they also have a picture behind them which makes them more enticing for the reader to click on rather than just loads of boring text. Although it contains all of the information on the home page that I needed I couldn’t change everything to look the way wanted it to look. I wanted the boxes in different places but it didn’t look very good on their setup. Before this task I had never created a website before and so I have definitely learnt some new things. I have also learnt how to use this website, although I didn’t like it very much. I don’t think that there are enough options and I think that the templates are too constricting and stop you from changing it around as much. I also wanted the top green picture to be shorter and thinner yet it wouldn’t let me do it and therefore I was stuck with it. It also left me no room for a logo which was disappointing and so I definitely know that when I make my website I will not be using this builder as it doesn’t fit my needs.
  • 13. Mock Website – WordPress This is the second website mock up that I made and I did it using the website builder WordPress. I defiantly liked this one much more than the other one which was Wix as I felt that it was easier to use and the layout was nicer. This is also an actual website where as the other one wasn’t which means that I can add to it and change it whenever I want too which is a bonus. It also had room for a logo which I think is great as it adds to the page and shows what the page will be about as the words ‘Yorkshire Walking’ aren’t much of a brand themselves. For example ‘Gentleman Quarterly’ have ‘GQ’ which stands out and is recognisable meaning they get more repeat customers. I also felt like the layout was really simple yet effective. It had everything you could want and it would definitely be easy for the readers to use as it was extremely obvious. I also learnt even more about website building as before this I had never done anything at all and I have now done two and so I feel that when I come to making my real one I’ll be ready and it will be much better than it could have been if I hadn’t practiced as much. I also feel as though this has helped as it’s made me realise what exactly it is that I need on there which I hadn’t already thought of for example the contact us page. It’s also made me aware of which pictures I’ll need to take as I will obviously need more than just my front cover and so I think that this exercise has helped me significantly.

They are all based around the same idea that the main image will be the entire background and there will be no white border. I also decided after doing my mock up to have the free prize near the top so that the readers will be enticed when it is on sale, on a rack. I also think adding an extra image will make people want to buy it to see what is inside. The masthead will be in the top left hand corner going across right as that is where people’s attention is drawn too first and the main cover line will be underneath as to draw people in and get their attention.

Flat Plans - DPS Title Main Image Text TextText Photo Information Sub heading Main Image Text Text Photo Information Title Sub heading This is the flat plan for my double page spread, it is simplistic however it will contains everything that is necessary. The first one will have an image over the entire page however the writing will be in the spaces around the focus of the image which will most likely be sky and cloud meaning you will be able to read it clearly where as the second one will only have an image on the second page so that you can focus on it and see it in detail.

For the drop down I put each heading of the different pages on my menu and then recent articles underneath as if it was a real website and magazine, each week every article would fit under one of those categories and you would find it in date order under those headings.
  • 20. Style Sheet Colours Fonts These are the potential colour schemes that will go on the cover and double page spread of my magazine. I chose these as they are all quite neutral as this magazine is for both men and women. They will each go with white which is the other colour for words and titles as that is neutral too. Additionally I think that the yellow would be a good choice as it will not clash with anything in the photographs as they will be mostly blues and greens yet it wont be to bold or stand out too much. I have booked a camera, photography SD card and a spare battery for the weekend from the 19th – 23rd whilst I am away in the Dales. I will be taking all of my own photos on location at Bolton Abbe and the Devonshire Arms. I will need a portrait photograph for my cover page, a small square or landscape image to also go on the front cover, a small square or landscape photo of my free prize and then multiple landscape and portrait photographs of the hotel for my double page spread. Images • Avenir • Consolas • Palatino These are the choices that I made for my fonts, I will try each one out once I have my photographs to see which one is most suitable along side the colours and words. I will use a consistent font throughout yet may use a slightly thicker or thinner version.

  • 23. Feedback https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/BZ7KD55 These are the questions and responses from my survey monkey questionnaire that I made asking about my front cover, double page spread and website. The overall response was very positive even though not all people said that they would buy the magazine. However that is understandable as they can like it yet not be interested in that subject. The feedback can help me to create a better end product and it will help me to get rid of any problems that may result in it being unprofessional or unsuccessful.

Research & Proposal For the first stage of my print rotation I had to research existing magazines to find out what codes and conventions they used so that I could apply the same theory to my magazine. I looked at magazines similar to the one I made like Walk or Country Living and then others that were more varied like GQ and Tatler. I think that there were many strengths to my research as I looked at lots of factors including font, colours and layouts and even found out each magazines target audience. All of this helped me to understand what kind of things I needed to include on my magazine so that it would appeal to the appropriate audience that I wanted it to. However I also think that were many weaknesses to my research as I’m not sure if I looked into each magazine enough. This is because it is the first time I have researched magazines and I wasn’t sure how much detail I needed to go into, I also didn’t know exactly what I was looking for. I should have done more specific research into each code and convention yet I didn’t. because of this my final product may not be as good as it could have been as I may have been able to make it more appealing if I had a deeper understanding of how other magazines did that themselves. However the even though I didn’t do much research I think it was still quality and that is better than quantity and therefore it may not negatively impact my final product. The research that I did do helped me to decide which fonts, colours and images to use. It showed me that each different type of font, for example, can effect the way someone perceives that magazine and that I had to carefully pick each of them according to who my target audience would be. Another part of my research was finding out who read the magazines that I research and then who read the magazines that were similar t the one I was making. This was vey important and then obvious shaped how I made my magazines front cover, double page spread and website. It also directly affected what the content and aesthetics would be as I had t fit them to the audience. After I had done all of my research I started to do my proposal which consisted of about five main points, the title, audience, rationale, concept and evaluation. I decided that my magazine would be called ‘Yorkshire Walking’ as it was quite self explanatory as it was a Yorkshire based magazine about walking and the countryside. When I looked at other similar walking or country magazines they had similar quite plain names and so I felt that it was the best route as if someone was wanting country walking magazine then they would know that mine was right and there would be no confusion. I think that my proposal was thorough and successful, the strengths of it are definitely that it helped me to make get my ideas down on one concise document so that I could go back to it to make sure I was staying on track. However there may be some weakness to it and they could be that the evaluation section of it was quite poor as I didn’t feel that I had much to right however looking back I could have filled it in more thoroughly and it may have helped me with my final evaluation and it may have made my final products better as I would have known exactly what to do. However overall I think that I definitely did a good proposal and there wasn’t much that I could improve on other than the evaluation section yet I think that it positive impacted on my final products as I was prepared and knew what I needed to create. One of the magazines that I researched that was similar to mine. One of the magazines that I researched that was very different from my idea.
  • 30. Production Research My production research consisted of me creating mock ups of my front cover, double page spread and website so that I could practise making each and find out what was needed to do so. I started with my front cover which I think was successful. Making this front cover made me realise how important the image and it’s surroundings were as before I didn’t know that. This definitely made a big impact on my final product as that was very important so that my cover was legible. I also learnt a lot about fonts and colours and that you needed a strict theme that would fit with the brand so ha all of the cover lines on the cover fitted together well. I also made two double page spread mock ups and these were very important in shaping my final products as I learnt a lot whilst making these which were necessary in my real production. I do however this that my mock up front cover was successful especially for a first try as it was enticing and I had all the main parts of magazine like barcode, big title and multiple cover lines meaning it was acceptable and was a good base to learn from. Firstly I learnt how to use InDesign which was vital in making my double page spread. It made me more competent and sure of what I was doing and therefore more sure in my decisions which made me create something that I wouldn’t have been able to before. Doing this also made me aware how how you need the picture to fit with the fonts and colours that are used so that readers can actually read it. I made two different types of mock ups one with a whole photograph covering both ages and one with just an A4 photograph and these helped me to understand how important the amount of words were and how they are set out matters as it could be boring or overwhelming and therefore unappealing for the viewer. I also make two mock up websites using two different sites Wix and WordPress. I first used Wix to create a website however it was very simplistic and because I had no previous experience of website building I didn’t take it much further. This made me realise that everything on the page has to be appealing and interesting and that there needs to be things that draw people in. Because I felt like this website builder wasn’t for me I decided to use WordPress to create a second mock up website however I think that that was actually worse and unsuccessful especially compared to the one I built on Wix. This is because the second one had only one link to another page and I couldn’t get the pages to have multiple articles under neither tem without changing the title to the table of that article and that wasn’t acceptable for my idea. I think that the WordPress website is very limiting and is probably better for blogging not for a magazine website which needs a menu with multiple pages and articles every month. Overall this definitely impacted my decision about my real website and final product as I knew how to use the website builders properly and how to make the website just how I wanted it so that it would be appealing and enticing to the readers and viewers. My mock front cover. My mock double page spread.
  • 31. Planning I did lots of planning for the print rotation which mainly consisted of flat plans and time management. The first thing that I started to plan was the flat plans and layouts. These took a considerable amount of time but were extremely effective in helping me to create both my front cover and my double page spreads. I think that the flat plans were very strong and because I made multiple versions of each it meant that I had choice when I started to properly create them. They definitely positively effected my final product as because I had them it meant that I could create more than one cover or double page spread that weren't exactly the same or set out similarly. This meant that I could create a better product each time as I could set them out as I had researched yet change them up depending on the images or colours used. This also meant that my work looked professional as I got my ideas from existing magazines and therefore mine will look realistic. If there were any weaknesses or restrictions that came from using the flat plans it would be that they limited the creativity that I had when setting up and create the pages however I think that there are only a certain number of ways you can set it out and therefore it probably didn’t affect m work that seriously. I also made a similar tree diagram or flat plan for my website which was very helpful as it made it much easier when trying to set up my website from scratch. I don’t think that it had any weaknesses other than that it was only small and wasn’t full of information but it was still helpful and it definitely positively impacted my final products. I also made a table for my production schedule which was meant to help me with my time management. I think that doing this was quite pointless as I just did the work once I had finished the previous task and I had many a day or two were I had no specific work planned. This therefore was very effective for myself as you cant always plan how long everything will take. Even though it didn’t negatively impact anything at all yet it did it positively impact my final products either. The final part of my planning was my style sheet which contained colours, fonts and location of images so that when I started production I didn’t need to source them in a rush and not get it right. This really helped me as I just got the hex code for the colours and I was ready to use it. This whole sheet was very successful and helped me to product a lot. If anything it may not have been detailed enough however I already knew what kind of thing I wanted and therefore I didn’t fell that I needed to go into further detail. I don’t think that this negatively impacted my production as it turned out well and I used the colours and fonts that I had planned for. One final thing that I also planned for before starting my creative production was the writing of my article and cover lines. I think that my article was quite strong as it was engaging and interesting yet was not too long or too short. It was also very malleable so I could take bits out to help it fit on my double page spread. Because I had already done this at home it meant that it wouldn’t slow down my production and I could plan what I wanted to take photos of as I already knew what I was making my double page spread about. Overall I think that my double page spread and all of my planning definitely positively impact my final products as they helped m to plan and fit everything in. Plans for my front cover. Plans for my double page spread. Planning for my colour scheme, I used the blue and yellow.
  • 32. Front Cover I think that my front cover for my magazine Yorkshire Walking was very successful and looked very realistic. Firstly I believe that it had many strengths, to begin I think that the photograph used on my final product was very professional and appealing, the colours on it are happy and portray the countryside as they contain lots of green, brown and blue which are the main colours found there. I used Photoshop to change the sky as I wasn’t happy with it as you ca see on attempt number 1 on slide 24. After I had changed that I think the cover looked more realistic and the words were more legible. I used Photoshop to create the whole thing which were skills that I have learnt throughout the past five months on this course and I have definitely added to them on this project and when I need to use it again I think I will be faster and better at it because of this product. I made many changes throughout the process of making the front cover to make it more successful, firstly was how to make it easy to read all of the writing. Because this was something that had come up when making the mock ups I knew that it was important to consider this carefully however I think that I tackled that properly and that my final product mirrors that as you can easily read all of the cover lines and words. If there are any weaknesses on my final product they would have to be that the cover lines are quite long. Usually on magazines they use a few words to entice viewers to read yet on mine I wrote a short sentence for each or a question. However I do think that the target audience for this magazine would be okay with that as the topics are ones in which you need information to know if you want to read or not and therefore I do not think that it s a huge mistake and I don’t think that it will negatively impact my magazine. My research was a huge factor in creating my cover as I knew that every aspect has to fit perfectly with one another so that it fitted with the brand and looked good. I used all of this by making sure I remembered the main issues I had with my mock up, they were mainly being able to read the text, the colours and the picture and I managed to control and plan all aspects of that and therefore I didn’t come across any of the problems that I had encountered because of my research. If I could improve my product now I think that I would make the issue date more legible as that was mentioned in my feedback on my survey. I would also reduce the length of my cover lines slightly which would also make room so that but could see more of the photograph. I think that this may have had an impact on how likely someone is to buy my magazine as if there is too much text they get put off and if they cant really see the picture then nothing is pulling them in but if I changed it they may be enticed by the photograph that you can see clearly. My end product definitely turned out better than I had thought it would as it looks very realistic. When I made the mock ups I thought that I couldn’t get any better than that however using Photoshop extends my skill set every time and so I improved massively when making my product. Additionally, when this is compared to a real magazine mine looks very successful as it genuinely looks realistic. You can see that the existing magazine and mine have all the same components and features on the cover and that they are set out in a similar way using the same codes and conventions that real magazines use. Overall I am very happy with my magazine cover as production went well. Country Walking magazine who’s cover has the same conventions as my magazine. My final magazine cover.
  • 33. Double Page Spreads I made two different versions of the same article for my double page spread and I have decided that I prefer the 2nd draft as it is more interesting for the readers. Firstly I think that my double page spread had many strengths but most importantly being the picture that I used as the background. It is very unusual and funny and this therefore makes the pages stand out and it would then get the readers attention when they are flipping through the magazine. The photograph itself is quite well taken as its unusual and eye-catching. The lines of the wall and the hills behind also conjoin where the cow is which draws your attention to that one point. I additionally photo shopped the sky onto the photo as the original was very white, cloudy and unappealing yet this one is much brighter and it makes the photograph look better. Another strength would be the positioning of the text as it is placed in the areas where the sky is. One of the aspects of my double page spread that I focused on was if my text was legible because in my mock ups I found it difficult to read my writing, therefore I think my final product turned out well as you could not only read it but it was at the top of the page which is where you attention is drawn and it also looks good in the space above the picture. If there were any weaknesses to my double page spread it may be that my writing was too small and therefore slightly harder to read however there wasn’t enough room to make it bigger and I think that if it was printed out on A4 you would be able to read it well. If I were going to improve I think that I would have to find a way to link my double page spread to my front cover and website other than content as at the moment when you look at them there is no direct link other than the font that I used. I also made a first draft which included a picture on only on A4 side and the rest was text however I think that was too plain and boring as it wouldn’t catch the readers eyes as they were flipping through it. Compared to the flat plan that I made when planning for my final product I think it went directly to plan as both of my drafts turned out just as I had wanted them too which is great as the way I had planned them was after I had research existed double page spreads. I think that compared to real ones mine was quite good as it contains the same things like the title, by line and actual article. However in the kind of magazine I made many of the articles are guides and lists of information and therefore in that respect mine aren't similar however if you compare it to a similar one then it was successful and realistic. Overall I am very happy with my double page spread as I think the article was well written as it is interesting and would hold a viewers. In addition to the main image that I used I could possible have put a small picture in the left hand corner of the page to show the place that the article was talking about in a bit more detail however I think that the title and article and picture work well together to create a god double page spread. Real double page spread from Country Walking magazine. My final draft of my double page spread. My first draft of my double page spread.
  • 34. Website For my final product on the print rotation I had to make a website for my magazine Yorkshire Walking. I made one first draft on WordPress yet then changed to Wix as I felt it had more capabilities and I thought that it fitted the type of website that I wanted better than the other website builder. I think that my website has many, strengths, one being the aesthetics of the whole website. It is neutral and therefore suitable for both men and women of many ages. It has lots of images on which are mainly of the countryside or Bolton Abbey which is in Yorkshire and therefore the content is relevant to the magazine. My website is also very easy to use which is something that you want especially if some of the people using it are from an older generation and may not be up to date with technology. It is smooth and contains relevant things from a gallery page with Yorkshire photographs to a page with the latest issue of the magazine on. If there are any weaknesses to my website they would be that one, on the picture boxes which are links, the word are not links as I couldn’t get them to be one. This is annoying as in my feedback I received an answer saying that I should improve it yet Wix will not let me. It would make it easier to use and more realistic and professional yet I couldn’t alter it. Additionally I think that apart from the layout of the header ‘Yorkshire Walking’ there isn’t much that links it to the cover or double page spread. This is a problem as I haven’t used the same colours yet I did that because many magazines change their colours depending on the photograph and so I felt that I shouldn't stick to only one colour plan and therefore neutral was the best option. I also think that the brand name/title is the most important part of a brand or magazine and therefore keeping the same layout brigs across the brand from the cover to the website meaning that hey are linked together. They are additionally linked via the photographs and content as they are the same for both. If I were to improve my website I would definitely add more content and more headers onto the menu to capture the full spectrum that my magazine follows. I also think that every time I now use website builders, especially Wix, I will just get better as I have learnt a whole new skill on this project as I had never learnt that before and each time I practice I will just get better It will definitely help me in the future even if not with print then in other aspects of media. My original plan website definitely changed as once I had started to build it as I obviously did not know what issues would come up. The main thing that I changed was the layout of the front home page as I wanted there to be pictures with links not a box with an insert in. this is because photographs are more appealing and interesting than lots of words and the fact that the entire box is a link is easy to use. I did also however change the menu options that I decided on yet that was only because I had to do three pages and I didn’t have the content at tis time to fill the other pages. I think that despite that my website turned but well and that it is easy to use. I think that if you compare it to come other websites that are similar the other big thing that differentiates them is the lack on content on mine which is obviously understandable. Other than that I feel as though mine is very professional as it has different options and a clean and easy layout. My final draft of my website. Live for the outdoors which is the owner of Country Walking website.
  • 35. Final Result Altogether I am very happy with the result of my final products as I think that they are realistic, professional and interesting. Throughout the process I tried to link all three products, my cover, double page spread and website, together so that they all fit under the same brand and look alike. I think that for the most part I did that successfully. I used the same font of ‘Palatino’ throughout the process and the only thing that wasn’t Palatino was the title for the double page spread as the Assassin one gave it more of an edge. I also used the same logo on the front cover and the website so that the bran/logo carried over and it was obvious that it was the same magazine. Even though the masthead/title was a different colour I didn’t think that that mattered because magazines often use different colours on their magazine covers each month and mainly black online and so I thought that being back on the website would encompass the whole magazine and then the colour would just change each month according to the topics and photographs used. I didn’t think that it was appropriate to put the logo on the double page spread as magazines do not usually do that and that is therefore why that bit may not link up in that respect. My final products are also content aware which means that everything on my website and in my magazine is based towards the target audience that I decided on when I made my proposal. It is therefore more appealing to my target audience and would increase the amount of people who subscribe to the magazine and regularly buy it. The brand that I created defiantly follows the same original plan that I made at the beginning of this rotation and I think that it even went better than I had planned for as everything went according to plan and there was no need for any contingency time. I also think that mine is very good compared to real existing magazines as they all have the same main frame and features which makes mine realistic and successful. After I had finished my three final products I made a survey to get advice on what to change and feedback on what was good. There were many positive responses to my magazine mainly focusing around the cover, photos and the ease of using the website. The negative comments were mainly based around the fact that the people who answered my survey didn’t want to buy it yet that was because they weren't in my target audience at all and their results could therefore be classed as bias. Altogether I m very happy with the end result as I think it looks good and is relevant to the task I was asked to complete. It also fits with the proposal that I created and would definitely appeal to the target audience that I picked. Masthead on my front cover. Masthead on my website. Masthead on my double page spread.
