Project 7 – Industrial distillation process
Context
Design an industrial distillation process that will be used for educational
goals in Antwerp
Join us to design and implement this distillation process in a laboratory environment in
a new campus in Antwerp

2. Our EPS project proposals for 2016
Goal? Design an industrial distillation process with existing equipment. This equipment is
part of a state of the art laboratory and will be used in future lessons/projects in this new
campus. You have to design and make this instalation work!
Where? At the new campus in Antwerp, in close collaboration with the study programmes
of process automation and electromechanical disciplines
Condition? In this project you can combine a hands-on mentality with a theoretical interest
in and knowledge of industrial equipment. At the end of the project you will be able to show
a working distillation process, which is used in a lot of industrial companies. This
implicates that you will gain a strong technical background to start working in the industry.

3. Our EPS project proposals for 2016
These are the main tasks for the students:
•Mechanical design of the distillation process installation.
•Analyzing the safety requirements in order to propose safety solutions. The distillation column is made of glass,
and will be working in vacuum or in high pressures and at high temperatures. Safety is an important aspect in such
a chemical process.
•Developing the complete electrical design of the instrumentation and actuators that are used in the distillation
process.
•Designing and implementing the required process regulation for distillation.
•Connecting the hardware to an industrial controller.
•Programming and testing a full automated distillation process in the controller.
•Writing an educational documentation for students to work with the equipment after this project has been
completed.
•The distillation process has to be operational at the end of the project.
The students will use this software packages to complete the design of the installation:
•Inventor: Mechanical design of the installation
•E-plan P8: Complete electrical design of the installation
•Software package to program and implement an automated process installation
•Visualisation software
Benefits for the student:
•Student will have experience in a lot of aspects that are important in industrial process installations.
•Student will do the whole section from design to implementation and testing of industrial equipment.
•Student will have experience in state of the art industrial software packages.
•Student will understand the distillation process, which is a process that is used in a lot of production companies.
