2. Pros: It’s relatively clear and it’s quite unique
and unusual
Cons: Might be a bit too “gothic”
3. Pros: Bold, clear, rounded corners on some
letters look good
Cons: The corners are only rounded on some
letters which some people might not think looks
good
4. Pros: Simplistic, easy to read, bold, compact
Cons: Might be too simplistic to attract
attention. Looks similar to XXL’s masthead.
5. Pros: The extra outline around the letters gives a
good effect, bold
Cons: The hyphen between the P and H is
unevenly spaced, could look too much like a
sports team logo
6. Pros: Made from just straight edges which looks
clear and good
Cons: If the space inside the letters was left
blank it might not show up well enough
7. Pros: Very bold and easy too read, quite
simplistic but with still an interesting edge to it
(the lines through letters)
Cons: Looks like military text or a stencil so
might connote that instead of hip-hop. Some
letters don’t have lines
11. These were my three favourite fonts because of
their simplicity. I got some feedback on them
from my audience so I could have ideas and
reasons to pick one of them as my masthead

12. I asked my audience for feedback on each masthead which I had labelled 1 to
3 on the previous slide:
1 – The least favourite of my target audience; they thought it connoted the
army too much and that the letters were too close together. One person said
that the way the lines went through the letters didn’t look good because not
all letters had line’s through.
3 – This was the second least-favourite, my audience didn’t like the gothic
looks to it and thought it would not suit a hip hop magazine, they preferred
something more simplistic. They did however like that it was very bold and
they thought the arrows coming of the letters would make it eye-catching
but worried people might not think it was a hip-hop magazine at first glance
because it looked gothic.
2 – Number two was everyone’s favourite masthead they thought the
simplistic block lettering looked “punchy” and aesthetically pleasing. A few
people who often read hip-hop magazines said they liked the lettering
because it was similar to a few other magazines in this genre but someone
did say that it would not make the magazine stand out against competitors if
it was just plain so I will experiment with bright colours or backgrounds for
my masthead to make sure it is effective at catching the reader’s eye
