uncover black money

this action.
It is said that the maxi-
mum amount of black
money has been revealed
by the business group
and their associates in-
volved in the textile dye-
ing and printing business
in Pali. The amount of
undisclosed income with
the group is said to be Rs
226 crore. After this, it is
said that the next big un-
ravelling was reported
with the group involved
in cables and files busi-
ness in Pipliya Kalan
where an undisclosed in-
come of about Rs 80
crore was found. Mean-
while, about Rs50 crore
has been uncovered from

pur. The officials also
seized some documents
related to the manipula-
tion of share prices and
adjustment of capital
gains in Pipliya Kalan
and Jodhpur, which may
expose black money
worth crores of rupees.
According to informa-
tion received from relia-
ble sources, the raid took
place at the residences
and offices and locations
of associates of Bharat
Kumar Gogar and Piyush
Gogar, directors of the
Gogar Group associated
with textile dyeing and

At a time when the Mod-
el Code of Conduct was
in place in the state a big
scam has come to light in
Rajasthan State Mines
and Minerals Limited
(RSMM). The work of
limestone transportation
and loading in railway
wagons has almost come
to a standstill for the last
four months, in the lime-
stone unit of RSMM, in
Jaisalmer.
Due to this RSMM,
Railways and the state
government have suf-
fered a revenue loss of
crores of rupees. Despite
this, no action is being
taken due to alleged col-
lusion with he contractor.
The contract for lime-
stone transportation and
loading into railway
wagons from Sonu Mines
to Railway Siding Sonu
at RSMM’s Unit was
awarded to M/s United
Coal Carriers Limited on
July 17 for three years.
As per the terms of the
contract, the contractor
was to start the work
within 30 days and com-
plete the target of trans-
portation and railway
wagon loading of 3 lakh
75000 metric tonnes per
month but the contractor
started the work after 75
days, on October 8 thus
failing to reach the target.
Now the transportation
work is being done under
police protection.
It may be noted that for
the last 30 years, the peo-
ple of the villages around
Sonu Mines have been
using their trucks for
transportation work. The
contractor has taken
away employment of the
locals and wants the
transportation done via
his trucks. Due to this,
about 350 trucks have
been standing here for
the last three-and-a-half
months.
On his part, the con-
tractor is unable to put to
use his trucks properly
and due to this the steel
production is on the
verge of collapse as
limestone from Sonu
Mines is transported to
various steel plants in the
country.
The contractor has
transported only 1 lakh
48402 tonnes thus caus-
ing a revenue loss of 13
lakh 26000 tonnes thus
causing huge loss to Rail-
ways, RSMM and the
stategovernment.
According to sources, the RSMM has suffered
a loss of about Rs 90 crore, Railways about Rs
500 crore and the state government to the
tune of about Rs 25 crore. But no action was
taken by the state government against any
officer in this regard.

he 28th Cli-
mate Sum-
mit in Dubai
dedicated a
day to dis-
cussing urbanisation as the
most vulnerable part of hu-
man society to the effects
of climate change. In cities,
dense population, lifestyle,
piles of garbage, transpor-
tation systems, foodgrains,
and materials used for day-
to-day use, coming from
other places are the major
factors contributing to cli-
mate change and rising
temperatures.
Hence, due to this, there
are adverse effects on the
people both physically,
mentally and economical-
ly. This will leave more
lethal effects in future.
Keeping this in view, a
ministerial-level meeting
aimed at urban problems
and solutions was organ-
ised during COP 28 on De-
cember 6.
According to United Na-
tions estimates, almost half
of the world’s population is
living in cities and it will
reach close to 70 per cent
by 2050. Even now, this
half of the population is us-
ing two-thirds of the ener-
gy and 70 per cent of the
natural resources and is
emitting 70 per cent of car-
bon. With the increasing
population and decreasing
natural resources, in the fu-
ture population density and
changing lifestyles will
lead to unexpected increas-
es in temperature, and an
increase in air pollution
leading to natural disasters
and difficulties in living.
COP 28, running with the
theme of Unite –Act – De-
liver, reiterated the com-
mitment to work towards
solutions considering cities
as the main epicentre of
climate change. Last year,
at COP27, Sustainable and
Resilient Cities for the
Next Generation (SURGE)
was launched at the Egyp-
tian initiative. Taking this
forward this year’s discus-
sion focused on environ-
ment-friendly urban trans-
port, infrastructure, waste
management, etc. If ana-
lysed in the context of In-
dia, there is still a long way
to go in all these areas. At
the global level, the most
environment-friendly
countries like Norway,
Sweden, Denmark and
many other countries of
Europe have presented
their achievements by de-
veloping themselves as
environment-friendly
countries.
Before 2014, urban
transport in India was neg-
ligible to the extent of be-
ing a nightmare. Even in a
densely packed city like
Mumbai, transportation
was limited to local train or
bus services. As a result,
citizens had to rely on pri-
vate or rented vehicles
which were a major source
of air pollution.
The surprising thing is
that in the commercial cap-
ital of the country, no poli-
cymaker noticed the plight
of the passengers travelling
on local trains. Recently,
the operation of metro
trains started in Mumbai on
a limited basis, but changes
can be seen on those routes.
Additionally, private and
non-public transportation
is leading to excessive use
of fossil fuels, which is an
important reason for tem-
perature rise.
Although India’s non-
conventional energy devel-
opment programme has
been openly praised at the
international level, consid-
ering urban transport from
an environmental perspec-
tive, it is necessary to ex-
pand its reach to all those
cities where it is currently
limited or negligible. The
use of non-conventional
energy-powered resources
for public transportation in
the states of Gujarat, Odi-
sha, etc is exemplary for
other states.
For the first time in
Dubai, keeping in mind the
importance of waste man-
agement, a dedicated pa-
vilion was created in which
thematic discussions were
held. Open burning of
waste in cities, especially
in developing and least de-
veloped nations, is consid-
ered the primary reason for
carbon emissions and the
generation of toxic gases.
Due to this, the common
man suffers from many
diseases and his productiv-
ity is also adversely af-
fected. Therefore, from the
national level to the local
level, emphasis has been
laid on implementing sci-
ence and environment-
based waste management
system which is inclusive
and based on circularity
i.e. Cradle to Cradle ap-
proach. This means that
after its production, the
product should ultimately
reach its place of origin
post-consumption so that
the need for disposal re-
mains zero or negligible.
Current systems are linear
and limited to shifting
waste from one place to
another. Its separation and
processing are very impor-
tant.
The jungle of concrete
that we see in cities and
call it development also
causes pollution because
of mining that goes on be-
hind their construction.
With the apparent compro-
mise of public spaces,
there is a shortage of urban
lungs for residents; and for
the future, mining is like
digging graveyards. The
fact is also that increasing
urbanisation cannot be
stopped or controlled, but
there is a need to work on
a mission mode to use lo-
cal and environmentally
friendly resources for their
construction.
During the discussions,
diminishing public spaces
have also been a point of
concern. In the absence of
these, the common citizen
does not feel comfortable
and remains confined to his
work or home thus becom-
ing a victim of depression.
India was often criti-
cised internationally but
the present leadership has
given a befitting reply to
them too. In his address
during COP 28, Prime
Minister Narendra Modi
made it clear at the very
beginning that we are not
responsible for rising tem-
peratures and climate
change but are increasingly
facing its adverse effects. It
is also a reality that energy
consumption in India is the
third highest in the world
but per capita emissions are
less than half of the world
average. PM Modi also
committed to addressing
climate change clearly by
presenting implemented
plans to balance develop-
ment and the environment.

In COP 28, which is
unique in many ways, the
Loss and Damage Fund
was finally established and
by the end of the first week
it had received pledges
spearheaded by US$100
million by UAE to total sum
of about US$750 million.
Currently, the resolution
has kept The World Bank
to host this fund.It should
probably be implemented
in real terms and its ben-
efit should be passed on
to compensate for the ill
effects and devastation
of climate change on
the urban population.
COP is organised every
year, heads of state come
and adopt resolutions but
there is a lack of accounta-
bility which is missing link.
Without making this entire
process accountable, an-
swerable and responsible,
questions will be raised
on its usefulness.

ISRAEL CONTINUES
TO PUMMEL GAZA
TO DESTROY HAMAS
INTOLERANCE OF OTHERS’
OPINIONS A CONCERN
srael seems impervious to human suffering
in the aftermath of its war on Hamas and is
also not open to heeding the voice of US
President Joe Biden and India’s Prime Minister Nar-
endra Modi. India recently voted in favour of a UN
General Assembly resolution for an immediate hu-
manitarian ceasefire. The resolution adopted by 153
member states was described by Israel as hypocritical
because it did not even name Hamas. India had ab-
stained on a similar vote in October. Jerusalem has
repeatedly rejected calls for halting the war. Even
after the recent UN resolution Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu’s spokesperson Oflr Gendel-
man said that “a ceasefire can only be reached after
Hamas is defeated”.Aceasefire at this stage will only
serve Hamas, which desperately needs respite for an
opportunity to reorganise. Israel’s point may be val-
id but the deaths and sufferings of innocent Palestin-
ians, in dire need of humanitarian aid, cannot be ig-
nored. It must find a way for aid to reach them.
I
ustice Sanjay Kishan Kaul of the Supreme
Court made a significant point when he
spoke of diminishing tolerance of others’
opinions and the need for judges to be bold. For the
latter he said that if they can’t be bold despite enjoy-
ing constitutional protection, then other organs of
administration should not be expected to be bold.
Justice Kaul was perhaps referring to some members
of the judiciary unable to take a stand against the
powers-that-be but he said that “this court has admin-
istered justice as it is
expected---without
fear or favour”. Still,
judges like Jagmo-
han Lal Sinha of the
Allahabad High
Court, who ruled
against former Prime
Minister Indira Gan-
dhi, are too rare to
find.
About tolerance of
contrarian views,
which hangs by a
thread, Justice Kaul’s
remark is equally
pertinent in today’s
context. “The whole
society works on a
system where people
must have tolerance
for each others’opin-
ion. I think that’s the
greatest message I
would like to give,”
Justice Kaul said on
his last day in office.
His concern was that
tolerance for contrary opinions was waning globally.
A Rand study on Western Europe said that “grow-
ing intolerance of others on grounds of race, religion
or ethnicity is an area of high public salience. The
report talks of “documented increase in support for

extremist political parties and an apparent rise in
manifestations of intolerant attitudes
”
Religious extremism, gender bias and caste dis-
crimination is not new but there’s little effort to weed
it out so that, as Justice Kaul said, “the world remains
a large place, doesn’t become a small place”.
J
Justice Kaul was

STOCK MARKET WATCH
THE PACE OF RISE MAY SLOW DOWN, BUT WILL NOT STOP
n the dynamic
landscape of
the Indian
stock market, a sus-
tained bullish trend is
captivating investors’
attention, backed by the
strategic moves of for-
eign institutional inves-
tors (FIIs).
After a significant re-
duction in their posi-
tions last November,
FIIs are now eyeing the
robust Indian economy,
hesitatingly waiting for
an opportune moment
amidst the current bull-
ish phase.
Market analysts said
that FIIs offloaded
shares worth Rs 75 thou-
sand crores throughout
2023 until November.
However, in Decem-
ber, there was a notice-
able shift as FIIs re-en-
tered the market by pur-
chasing shares worth Rs
29,700 crores.
This indicates a sub-
stantial surplus of Rs 45
thousand crores waiting
to be reinvested, cou-
pled with fresh invest-
ments on an annual ba-
sis. The injection of new
funds is anticipated to
propel the market fur-
ther upwards, as histori-
cal data attests to the
market’s responsiveness
to fresh capital.
Readers are encour-
aged to revisit earlier
articles highlighting the
pivotal role played by
Indian investors, pre-
dominantly through
Systematic Investment
Plans (SIP), in propel-
ling the market to new
heights.
Despite a momentary
deceleration, the influx
of crores of rupees into
the market every month
from domestic investors
underscores the overall
bullish sentiment, assur-
ing a positive trajectory.
Reflecting on the re-
cent week, ending on
December 15th, the
market experienced a
consistent upward trend.
Contributing factors in-
cluded institutional in-
vestors’ buying spree, a
drop in crude oil prices,
and indications of future
interest rate reductions
by the US Federal Bank
in 2024.
During the week, FIIs
purchased shares worth
Rs 18,858.34 crores,
counteracted by domes-
tic institutional inves-
tors (DIIs) selling shares
worth Rs 2,592.35
crores. This propelled
both BSE and NSE indi-
ces upwards, with mid-
cap and smallcap indi-
ces following suit.
Looking ahead, trad-
ers anticipate the posi-
tive momentum to per-
sist. Sectors such as
auto, bank, IT, infra-
structure, and pharma,
along with select com-
panies like Tata Motors,
Reliance Industries,
JSW Infra, HPCL,
BPCL, and Adani Port,
are currently deemed
safe investments.
However, traders cau-
tion that even reputed
stocks may face down-
turns during periods of
market sentiment weak-
ness.
In the current week,
investors have the op-
portunity to explore
IPOs from eight compa-
nies, including Jaipur’s
Motisons Jewellers
Limited, listed on the
main board. Addition-
ally, seven IPOs are
available on the SME
platform.
Notably, Denta Water
and Infra Solutions Lim-
ited have submitted its
draft red herring pro-
spectus (DRHP) to
SEBI, signaling contin-
ued market dynamism.

United Nations: India's Permanent Represen-

...AND FINALLY
LOTUS WORSHIPING BOTH ‘MANDAL' AND ‘KAMANDAL'
he results of the Assembly
elections of ïŹve states have
brought a sense of pride on
the facse of the saffron party leaders
ad with this the electoral face of 2024
has started taking shape. With their
might, BJP strategists have united both
‘Mandal' and ‘Kamandal' politics and
have shown the skill of co-operation.
While in the announcements of the
Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Minis-
ters in the three states, there has been
a juggling act to achieve caste balance
and there are strong preparations for
the next electoral battle of the na-
tion. On January 22, the historic Ram
temple is to be inaugurated in Ayodhya
by the Prime Minister, while in the very
next month i.e. in February, the PM
will inaugurate the grand Hindu temple
being built in Abu Dhabi. The construc-
tion of this grand temple at Abu Dhabi,
the capital of the United Arab Emirates,
has cost Rs 700 crore. This temple has
been constructed by ‘Bochasanwasi
Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan
Sanstha’. The 'Festival of Harmony' will
start here from February 10 and then
this temple will be inaugurated by PM
Modi on February 14. Apart from this,
there is also a big plan for door-to-door
distribution of the prasad of Ayodhya's
Ram temple and the BJP intends to
present a display of the power of devo-
tion in front of the Opposition parties.
T
ast month,
the marriage
ceremony of
Aakriti, daughter of Bihar
Congress state president
Akhilesh Prasad Singh,
was held in New Delhi.
A gathering of some big
leaders of Congress was
seen there. While Ghulam
Nabi Azad and Anand
Sharma also came for the
wedding, but the absence
of members of the Gandhi
family was felt by all. Nei-
ther Sonia, nor Rahul, nor
Priyanka were seen there.
Yes, Lalu Yadav was pre-
sent in that function the
entire time. Tariq Anwar
was Lalu's sidekick, there
was no special conver-
sation between these
two leaders. Meanwhile,
Shyam Sundar Dheeraj,
an old leader of Bihar
Congress, reached there,
Lalu called him and made
him sit on his right side
and was seen talking to
him cheerfully.
L
y handing over the command of Madhya
Pradesh to a Yadav leader, BJP has tried
to hit many birds with one stone. With this
initiative, the party has also given a clear message
to the Yadavs of Bihar and UP. The venue of Mo-
han Yadav's swearing-in ceremony
was plastered with posters of
PM Modi's schemes. This
swearing-in ceremony was
shown live in a planned man-
ner by installing huge screens
in Yadav dominated areas of
UP and Bihar. This way the
BJP warriors made a strat-
egy and tried their
best to break
into the Yadav
vote bank
of Lalu and
Akhilesh.

the Congress victorious in Telangana this time.
Sources reveal that Sharmila may merge her politi-

has proposed to Sharmila that

n the world of fash-
ion, where trends
come and go, boho
dresses stand as a
testament to time-
less style and a cel-
ebration of individuality. Origi-
nating in the counterculture
movements of the 1960s
and 1970s, boho dresses
have transcended the dec-
ades, maintaining their al-
lure with a unique blend
of free-spirited charm
and eclectic elegance.
At the heart of boho
dresses is the bohemian
spirit, a rejection of con-
ventional norms in favour
of a more liberated, artis-
tic lifestyle. The term “bo-
hemian” itself suggests an
unconventional approach to
life and style, and this ethos is
beautifully embodied in the
flowing, relaxed designs of boho
dresses.
Boho dresses are characterized by
their diverse fabrics and patterns.
Flowing maxi dresses in earthy
tones, adorned with floral prints,
paisley patterns, and tribal mo-
tifs, showcase the rich tapestry
of influences that define boho
fashion.
One of the key strengths of
boho dresses lies in their ver-
satility. Whether it’s a casual
day out, a music festival, or a
beachside soiree, boho dress-
es effortlessly transition be-
tween occasions.
What sets boho dresses
apart are the intricate de-
tails and embellishments
that adorn them. Fringes,
embroidery, lace, and tas-
sels add a touch of whim-
sy and artisanal crafts-
manship, elevating these
dresses into wearable
works of art.
Boho dresses invite creativity
when it comes to styling. Pairing
them with ankle boots, wide-brimmed
hats, or layered jewellery enhances
the boho aesthetic. The beauty lies in
the mix-and-match approach, encour-
aging wearers to express their unique
personalities through their fashion
choices.
Boho dresses continue to captivate
fashion enthusiasts with their endur-
ing charm, embodying a spirit of free-
dom, individuality, and creativity. As
we navigate the ever-changing land-
scape of fashion, these timeless piec-
es serve as a reminder that true style
transcends trends, inviting us to em-
brace our unique selves with every
sway of a boho dress.
BohoBliss!
Boho fashion transcended trend, becoming a
timeless wardrobe staple for those seeking
comfort and touch whimsy in their attire. City
First makes you wear casually, for weekend
outings, dresses that embody a bohemian
lifestyle that values self-expression creativity!

or decades, marketers
of consumer goods de-
signed highly adorned
packages, deploying
bold colours, snazzy
text, cartoons and il-
lustrations to seize the attention of
shoppers. Conventional wisdom held
that with thousands of products com-
peting against one another in the aisles
of big box stores and supermarkets,
companies needed to do everything in
their power to make their products
stand out.
But recently, there’s been a move
toward simplicity. The stripped-down
packaging you’ll often see is reminis-
cent of the minimalist art that flour-
ished in the 1960s. A reaction against
overly complex, representative works,
the art that emerged in this period was
characterized by spareness and abstrac-
tion.Any elements deemed unnec-
essary were re- moved.
What’s behind
the move toward
elegant but unclut-
tered packaging de-
signs? Recent re-
search I conducted
with marketing profes-
sors Rosanna K. Smith
and Julio Sevilla ex-
plored whether shoppers
prefer this packaging –
and, if so, why.
When less is more
First, we wanted to see if
shoppers were willing to pay
more for products in these
packages. So we analyzed
over 1,000 consumer goods,
such as shampoo, deodor-
ant, crackers and cere-
al, from the largest
supermarket chain in
the U.S.
We had two research assistants code
for the extent to which the packaging
design was simple or complex. We then
averaged their ratings to create a meas-
ure of packaging design simplicity.
From this data, we found that products
in simple packaging generally had
higher retail prices than similar prod-
ucts that didn’t. The higher retail prices
indicate that shoppers are willing to pay
more for products in this packaging.
Next, across a series of experiments,
we recruited students from a public uni-
versity. We asked them to look at dif-
ferent packaged products and tell us
how much they were willing to pay for
those products, how many ingredi-
ents they thought the products might
have, and how pure they perceived the
products to be.
We found that the preference for sim-
ple packaging was because pared-down
designs sent a subtle yet powerful sig-
nal: purity. This happened because the
simplicity of the product package made
participants more likely to assume that
the product contained fewer ingredients,
along with fewer preservatives, added
colours or artificial flavours.
People will pay a premium for prod-
ucts that don’t have additives or chemi-
cals, whether it’s food, cleaning sup-
plies or soaps. This may explain why the
study’s participants were willing to fork
over more cash for products that appear
in simple packages – regardless of
whether they contain fewer ingredients.
Several brands illustrate the ability of
simple packaging to attract shoppers.
Kashi’s cereal boxes employ a muted
colour scheme and avoid overloading
the package with claims or extensive
product descriptions. Siggi’s yoghurt
containers embrace white spaces, mut-
ed colours and straightforward image-
ry, highlighting only the crucial product
details.
Native deodorant and body wash
packaging stands out with its clear
background paired with concise typog-
raphy. Hair care brands such as OUAI
and Hims often use muted colours and
simplistic typography to succinctly pre-
sent information about their products.
When less is less
However, simple packaging design
is not always effective. We found that
products from generic brands fail to
reap the same premiums from minimal-
ist packaging.Aproduct from a generic
brand does not have a brand name and
is typically sold at a lower price than
name-brand equivalents.
In the case of these products, the sim-
plicity of the packaging seems to align
with customers’ beliefs that generic
brands invest less in the quality of their
products. So the simplicity of generic
product packaging may signal a lack of
investment in the product rather than
fewer chemicals or food additives.
The desires of shoppers can also in-
fluence the preference for simple pack-
aging. When people seek healthier op-
tions, we find that they’ll pay more for
products with simple packaging. How-
ever, when consumers want to indulge
in junk food, they’ll be more inclined
to purchase products with complex
packaging, which signals many ingre-
dients and lower purity – qualities as-
sociated with more flavour.
So when it comes to minimalist aes-
thetics, less can often be more. But in
some cases, less is simply less.

Nirmal Tiwari Jaipur At a time when the Mod- el Code of Conduct was in place in the state a big scam has come to light in Rajasthan State Mines and Minerals Limited (RSMM). The work of limestone transportation and loading in railway wagons has almost come to a standstill for the last four months, in the lime- stone unit of RSMM, in Jaisalmer. Due to this RSMM, Railways and the state government have suf- fered a revenue loss of crores of rupees. Despite this, no action is being taken due to alleged col- lusion with he contractor. The contract for lime- stone transportation and loading into railway wagons from Sonu Mines to Railway Siding Sonu at RSMM’s Unit was awarded to M/s United Coal Carriers Limited on July 17 for three years. As per the terms of the contract, the contractor was to start the work within 30 days and com- plete the target of trans- portation and railway wagon loading of 3 lakh 75000 metric tonnes per month but the contractor started the work after 75 days, on October 8 thus failing to reach the target. Now the transportation work is being done under police protection. It may be noted that for the last 30 years, the peo- ple of the villages around Sonu Mines have been using their trucks for transportation work. The contractor has taken away employment of the locals and wants the transportation done via his trucks. Due to this, about 350 trucks have been standing here for the last three-and-a-half months. On his part, the con- tractor is unable to put to use his trucks properly and due to this the steel production is on the verge of collapse as limestone from Sonu Mines is transported to various steel plants in the country. The contractor has transported only 1 lakh 48402 tonnes thus caus- ing a revenue loss of 13 lakh 26000 tonnes thus causing huge loss to Rail- ways, RSMM and the stategovernment. According to sources, the RSMM has suffered a loss of about Rs 90 crore, Railways about Rs 500 crore and the state government to the tune of about Rs 25 crore. But no action was taken by the state government against any officer in this regard. • 4. he 28th Cli- mate Sum- mit in Dubai dedicated a day to dis- cussing urbanisation as the most vulnerable part of hu- man society to the effects of climate change. In cities, dense population, lifestyle, piles of garbage, transpor- tation systems, foodgrains, and materials used for day- to-day use, coming from other places are the major factors contributing to cli- mate change and rising temperatures. Hence, due to this, there are adverse effects on the people both physically, mentally and economical- ly. This will leave more lethal effects in future. Keeping this in view, a ministerial-level meeting aimed at urban problems and solutions was organ- ised during COP 28 on De- cember 6. According to United Na- tions estimates, almost half of the world’s population is living in cities and it will reach close to 70 per cent by 2050. Even now, this half of the population is us- ing two-thirds of the ener- gy and 70 per cent of the natural resources and is emitting 70 per cent of car- bon. With the increasing population and decreasing natural resources, in the fu- ture population density and changing lifestyles will lead to unexpected increas- es in temperature, and an increase in air pollution leading to natural disasters and difficulties in living. COP 28, running with the theme of Unite –Act – De- liver, reiterated the com- mitment to work towards solutions considering cities as the main epicentre of climate change. Last year, at COP27, Sustainable and Resilient Cities for the Next Generation (SURGE) was launched at the Egyp- tian initiative. Taking this forward this year’s discus- sion focused on environ- ment-friendly urban trans- port, infrastructure, waste management, etc. If ana- lysed in the context of In- dia, there is still a long way to go in all these areas. At the global level, the most environment-friendly countries like Norway, Sweden, Denmark and many other countries of Europe have presented their achievements by de- veloping themselves as environment-friendly countries. Before 2014, urban transport in India was neg- ligible to the extent of be- ing a nightmare. Even in a densely packed city like Mumbai, transportation was limited to local train or bus services. As a result, citizens had to rely on pri- vate or rented vehicles which were a major source of air pollution. The surprising thing is that in the commercial cap- ital of the country, no poli- cymaker noticed the plight of the passengers travelling on local trains. Recently, the operation of metro trains started in Mumbai on a limited basis, but changes can be seen on those routes. Additionally, private and non-public transportation is leading to excessive use of fossil fuels, which is an important reason for tem- perature rise. Although India’s non- conventional energy devel- opment programme has been openly praised at the international level, consid- ering urban transport from an environmental perspec- tive, it is necessary to ex- pand its reach to all those cities where it is currently limited or negligible. The use of non-conventional energy-powered resources for public transportation in the states of Gujarat, Odi- sha, etc is exemplary for other states. For the first time in Dubai, keeping in mind the importance of waste man- agement, a dedicated pa- vilion was created in which thematic discussions were held. Open burning of waste in cities, especially in developing and least de- veloped nations, is consid- ered the primary reason for carbon emissions and the generation of toxic gases. Due to this, the common man suffers from many diseases and his productiv- ity is also adversely af- fected. Therefore, from the national level to the local level, emphasis has been laid on implementing sci- ence and environment- based waste management system which is inclusive and based on circularity i.e. Cradle to Cradle ap- proach. This means that after its production, the product should ultimately reach its place of origin post-consumption so that the need for disposal re- mains zero or negligible. Current systems are linear and limited to shifting waste from one place to another. Its separation and processing are very impor- tant. The jungle of concrete that we see in cities and call it development also causes pollution because of mining that goes on be- hind their construction. With the apparent compro- mise of public spaces, there is a shortage of urban lungs for residents; and for the future, mining is like digging graveyards. The fact is also that increasing urbanisation cannot be stopped or controlled, but there is a need to work on a mission mode to use lo- cal and environmentally friendly resources for their construction. During the discussions, diminishing public spaces have also been a point of concern. In the absence of these, the common citizen does not feel comfortable and remains confined to his work or home thus becom- ing a victim of depression. India was often criti- cised internationally but the present leadership has given a befitting reply to them too. In his address during COP 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made it clear at the very beginning that we are not responsible for rising tem- peratures and climate change but are increasingly facing its adverse effects. It is also a reality that energy consumption in India is the third highest in the world but per capita emissions are less than half of the world average. PM Modi also committed to addressing climate change clearly by presenting implemented plans to balance develop- ment and the environment. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL TOP TWEETS SPIRITUAL SPEAK It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell. BUDDHA RESOLUTIONS OF SUMMIT In COP 28, which is unique in many ways, the Loss and Damage Fund was finally established and by the end of the first week it had received pledges spearheaded by US$100 million by UAE to total sum of about US$750 million. Currently, the resolution has kept The World Bank to host this fund.It should probably be implemented in real terms and its ben- efit should be passed on to compensate for the ill effects and devastation of climate change on the urban population. COP is organised every year, heads of state come and adopt resolutions but there is a lack of accounta- bility which is missing link. Without making this entire process accountable, an- swerable and responsible, questions will be raised on its usefulness. CLIMATECHANGE ANDURBANISATION COP 28, running with the theme of Unite – Act – Deliver, reiterated the commitment to work towards solutions considering cities as the main epicentre of climate change. Last year, at COP 27, Sustainable and Resilient Cities for the Next Generation (SURGE) was launched at the Egyptian initiative. Taking this forward this year’s discussion focused on environment-friendly urban transport, infrastructure, waste management, etc. If analysed in the context of India, there is still a long way to go in all these areas IN-DEPTH ISRAEL CONTINUES TO PUMMEL GAZA TO DESTROY HAMAS INTOLERANCE OF OTHERS’ OPINIONS A CONCERN srael seems impervious to human suffering in the aftermath of its war on Hamas and is also not open to heeding the voice of US President Joe Biden and India’s Prime Minister Nar- endra Modi. India recently voted in favour of a UN General Assembly resolution for an immediate hu- manitarian ceasefire. The resolution adopted by 153 member states was described by Israel as hypocritical because it did not even name Hamas. India had ab- stained on a similar vote in October. Jerusalem has repeatedly rejected calls for halting the war. Even after the recent UN resolution Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s spokesperson Oflr Gendel- man said that “a ceasefire can only be reached after Hamas is defeated”.Aceasefire at this stage will only serve Hamas, which desperately needs respite for an opportunity to reorganise. Israel’s point may be val- id but the deaths and sufferings of innocent Palestin- ians, in dire need of humanitarian aid, cannot be ig- nored. It must find a way for aid to reach them. I ustice Sanjay Kishan Kaul of the Supreme Court made a significant point when he spoke of diminishing tolerance of others’ opinions and the need for judges to be bold. For the latter he said that if they can’t be bold despite enjoy- ing constitutional protection, then other organs of administration should not be expected to be bold. Justice Kaul was perhaps referring to some members of the judiciary unable to take a stand against the powers-that-be but he said that “this court has admin- istered justice as it is expected---without fear or favour”. Still, judges like Jagmo- han Lal Sinha of the Allahabad High Court, who ruled against former Prime Minister Indira Gan- dhi, are too rare to find. About tolerance of contrarian views, which hangs by a thread, Justice Kaul’s remark is equally pertinent in today’s context. “The whole society works on a system where people must have tolerance for each others’opin- ion. I think that’s the greatest message I would like to give,” Justice Kaul said on his last day in office. His concern was that tolerance for contrary opinions was waning globally. A Rand study on Western Europe said that “grow- ing intolerance of others on grounds of race, religion or ethnicity is an area of high public salience. The report talks of “documented increase in support for
extremist political parties and an apparent rise in manifestations of intolerant attitudes
” Religious extremism, gender bias and caste dis- crimination is not new but there’s little effort to weed it out so that, as Justice Kaul said, “the world remains a large place, doesn’t become a small place”. J Justice Kaul was perhaps referring to some members of the judiciary unable to take a stand against the powers- that-be but he said that “this court has administered justice as it is expected--- without fear or favour”. This indicates a sub- stantial surplus of Rs 45 thousand crores waiting to be reinvested, cou- pled with fresh invest- ments on an annual ba- sis. The injection of new funds is anticipated to propel the market fur- ther upwards, as histori- cal data attests to the market’s responsiveness to fresh capital. Readers are encour- aged to revisit earlier articles highlighting the pivotal role played by Indian investors, pre- dominantly through Systematic Investment Plans (SIP), in propel- ling the market to new heights. Despite a momentary deceleration, the influx of crores of rupees into the market every month from domestic investors underscores the overall bullish sentiment, assur- ing a positive trajectory. Reflecting on the re- cent week, ending on December 15th, the market experienced a consistent upward trend. Contributing factors in- cluded institutional in- vestors’ buying spree, a drop in crude oil prices, and indications of future interest rate reductions by the US Federal Bank in 2024. During the week, FIIs purchased shares worth Rs 18,858.34 crores, counteracted by domes- tic institutional inves- tors (DIIs) selling shares worth Rs 2,592.35 crores. This propelled both BSE and NSE indi- ces upwards, with mid- cap and smallcap indi- ces following suit. Looking ahead, trad- ers anticipate the posi- tive momentum to per- sist. Sectors such as auto, bank, IT, infra- structure, and pharma, along with select com- panies like Tata Motors, Reliance Industries, JSW Infra, HPCL, BPCL, and Adani Port, are currently deemed safe investments. However, traders cau- tion that even reputed stocks may face down- turns during periods of market sentiment weak- ness. In the current week, investors have the op- portunity to explore IPOs from eight compa- nies, including Jaipur’s Motisons Jewellers Limited, listed on the main board. Addition- ally, seven IPOs are available on the SME platform. Notably, Denta Water and Infra Solutions Lim- ited have submitted its draft red herring pro- spectus (DRHP) to SEBI, signaling contin- ued market dynamism. Origi- nating in the counterculture movements of the 1960s and 1970s, boho dresses have transcended the dec- ades, maintaining their al- lure with a unique blend of free-spirited charm and eclectic elegance. At the heart of boho dresses is the bohemian spirit, a rejection of con- ventional norms in favour of a more liberated, artis- tic lifestyle. The term “bo- hemian” itself suggests an unconventional approach to life and style, and this ethos is beautifully embodied in the flowing, relaxed designs of boho dresses. Boho dresses are characterized by their diverse fabrics and patterns. Flowing maxi dresses in earthy tones, adorned with floral prints, paisley patterns, and tribal mo- tifs, showcase the rich tapestry of influences that define boho fashion. One of the key strengths of boho dresses lies in their ver- satility. Whether it’s a casual day out, a music festival, or a beachside soiree, boho dress- es effortlessly transition be- tween occasions. What sets boho dresses apart are the intricate de- tails and embellishments that adorn them. Fringes, embroidery, lace, and tas- sels add a touch of whim- sy and artisanal crafts- manship, elevating these dresses into wearable works of art. Boho dresses invite creativity when it comes to styling. Pairing them with ankle boots, wide-brimmed hats, or layered jewellery enhances the boho aesthetic. The beauty lies in the mix-and-match approach, encour- aging wearers to express their unique personalities through their fashion choices. Boho dresses continue to captivate fashion enthusiasts with their endur- ing charm, embodying a spirit of free- dom, individuality, and creativity. As we navigate the ever-changing land- scape of fashion, these timeless piec- es serve as a reminder that true style transcends trends, inviting us to em- brace our unique selves with every sway of a boho dress. Conventional wisdom held that with thousands of products com- peting against one another in the aisles of big box stores and supermarkets, companies needed to do everything in their power to make their products stand out. But recently, there’s been a move toward simplicity. The stripped-down packaging you’ll often see is reminis- cent of the minimalist art that flour- ished in the 1960s. A reaction against overly complex, representative works, the art that emerged in this period was characterized by spareness and abstrac- tion.Any elements deemed unnec- essary were re- moved. What’s behind the move toward elegant but unclut- tered packaging de- signs? Recent re- search I conducted with marketing profes- sors Rosanna K. Smith and Julio Sevilla ex- plored whether shoppers prefer this packaging – and, if so, why. When less is more First, we wanted to see if shoppers were willing to pay more for products in these packages. So we analyzed over 1,000 consumer goods, such as shampoo, deodor- ant, crackers and cere- al, from the largest supermarket chain in the U.S. We had two research assistants code for the extent to which the packaging design was simple or complex. We then averaged their ratings to create a meas- ure of packaging design simplicity. From this data, we found that products in simple packaging generally had higher retail prices than similar prod- ucts that didn’t. The higher retail prices indicate that shoppers are willing to pay more for products in this packaging. Next, across a series of experiments, we recruited students from a public uni- versity. We asked them to look at dif- ferent packaged products and tell us how much they were willing to pay for those products, how many ingredi- ents they thought the products might have, and how pure they perceived the products to be. We found that the preference for sim- ple packaging was because pared-down designs sent a subtle yet powerful sig- nal: purity. This happened because the simplicity of the product package made participants more likely to assume that the product contained fewer ingredients, along with fewer preservatives, added colours or artificial flavours. People will pay a premium for prod- ucts that don’t have additives or chemi- cals, whether it’s food, cleaning sup- plies or soaps. This may explain why the study’s participants were willing to fork over more cash for products that appear in simple packages – regardless of whether they contain fewer ingredients. Several brands illustrate the ability of simple packaging to attract shoppers. Kashi’s cereal boxes employ a muted colour scheme and avoid overloading the package with claims or extensive product descriptions. Siggi’s yoghurt containers embrace white spaces, mut- ed colours and straightforward image- ry, highlighting only the crucial product details. Native deodorant and body wash packaging stands out with its clear background paired with concise typog- raphy. Hair care brands such as OUAI and Hims often use muted colours and simplistic typography to succinctly pre- sent information about their products. When less is less However, simple packaging design is not always effective. We found that products from generic brands fail to reap the same premiums from minimal- ist packaging.Aproduct from a generic brand does not have a brand name and is typically sold at a lower price than name-brand equivalents. In the case of these products, the sim- plicity of the packaging seems to align with customers’ beliefs that generic brands invest less in the quality of their products. So the simplicity of generic product packaging may signal a lack of investment in the product rather than fewer chemicals or food additives. The desires of shoppers can also in- fluence the preference for simple pack- aging. When people seek healthier op- tions, we find that they’ll pay more for products with simple packaging. How- ever, when consumers want to indulge in junk food, they’ll be more inclined to purchase products with complex packaging, which signals many ingre- dients and lower purity – qualities as- sociated with more flavour. So when it comes to minimalist aes- thetics, less can often be more. But in some cases, less is simply less.
