Mumbai: Putting into
practice the knowl-
edge he imbibed when
current Deputy CM
Devendra Fadnavis
was at the helm of af-
fairs in Maharashtra,
Chief Minister Eknath
Shinde on Tuesday ap-
pointed close aides as
personal secretaries
to assist new minis-
ters of his cabinet.
Krushna Jadhav
was deputed as the
personal secretary to
newly installed Public
Health and Family
Welfare Ministers
Tanaji Sawant.
Another rebel-Shiv
Sena MLA turned
minister in the Shin-
de-led government,
Sanjay Rathod, the
newly minted Food
and Drugs Adminis-
tration (FDA) minis-
ter has also been allot-
ted another Shinde
aide Jayram Pawar.
According to a per-
son familiar with the
development, “This is
the same pattern that
was introduced by
Bharatiya Janata Par-
ty’s (BJP) Devendra
Fadnavis, when he be-
came the CM in 2014.
He had similarly ap-
pointed personal sec-
retaries to various
BJP ministers in his
cabinet, in order to ef-
fectively ensure real-
time knowledge of the
goings on in the de-
partments of his BJP
colleagues. Shinde has
taken a leaf out of
Fadnavis’ book of pru-
dent governance, it
would appear.”
On the other hand,
a senior BJP leader--
while not denying the
striking similarity in
the appointments of
personal secretaries
in the Shinde camp of
MLAs-- added, “The
fact remains that
there is a huge differ-
ence in the BJP-sup-
ported government

rashtra today and
the previous govern-
ment, Turn to P6
CM Shinde met with late singer Lata Mangeshkar’s sister Usha Mangeshkar, brother Hridaynath’s

Shinde faction MLA threatens

First India Bureau
Mumbai: An MLA be-
longing to Maharash-
tra Chief Eknath
Shinde-led faction
has asked his sup-
porters to beat up
workers of the Ud-
dhav Thackeray-led
Shiv Sena amid the
growing rift between
the two groups.
A video on Monday
went viral on social me-
dia platforms wherein
MLA Prakash Surve
was also seen assuring
his supporters to bail
them out if they face
any legal action. Later,
workers of the Thacker-
ay-led Sena complained
to police, seeking action
against Surve, the legis-
lator from Magathane
in northwest Mumbai.
In the video, the MLA
was seen saying, “We
will not be complacent.
We have to show them
their place and not tol-
erate anyone bullying
us...If anyone says any-
thing then beat him up,
Prakash Surve is sitting
here...pulp them.”
If you cannot break
their hands, then break
their legs. I will ensure
your bail the next day.
We will not spare any-
one, Surve added.
When contacted,
Surve refused to com-
ment on the video.
Surve is one of the
Shiv Sena MLAs back-
ing Chief Minister
Shinde, who led a revolt
against the party lead-
ership in June this year,
resulting in the collapse
of the previous Thack-
eray-led government.
Meanwhile, workers
of the Thackeray fac-
tion filed a complaint
with Dahisar police in
Mumbai, seeking ac-
tion against Surve.
An official from Da-

a written complaint
from the Shiv Sena
workers against
Prakash Surve. They
have demanded action
against him, but we are
verifying the facts and
an investigation is on.

“It has been eight

The Union cabinet un-

medical centre. She
was carried in a
makeshift dooly
(stretcher ) from her
village in Palghar,
which is around 3 km

The incident took
place on Monday, when
the woman from Mar-

An ambulance
rushed the woman to

If the woman had
reached the medical fa-

Patients are often
brought to the PHC

“The women from re-

A few occupants of
the building and ten-
ants who run shops on
its ground floor, how-
ever, refused to vacate
the premises. They
moved the high court
arguing that the struc-
ture only needed minor
repairs.
The ground plus five
floor structure is more
than a century old and
was used for providing
hostel facilities to wid-
ows.
In fact, due to the
building’s poor condi-
tion, the widows resid-
ing there were moved to
another hostel in 2019.
The civic body’s TAC
held a structural audit
meet in October 2021,
wherein it came to the
conclusion that the
building was in a dilap-
idated condition and
may collapse.
The high court in its
order noted that the
TAC had rightly formed
its opinion, and said it
was not inclined to
form a differing opin-
ion.
“If this building is al-
lowed to be retained, if
any untoward incident
occurs then there will
be a loss of lives not
only of the occupants
of the building but also
passersby,” said the
bench.
The High Court,
while upholding the
TAC’s decision and the
BMC’s letter of April
2022, directed the occu-
pants to vacate the
premises within three
weeks so that the build-
ing could be demol-
ished.
If the occupants do
not vacate the premises,
then the BMC can take
forcible possession and
carry out demolition,
said the court.

Bite marks on man’s face help
cops nab him for molesting girl
First India Bureau
Thane: The bite
marks on a man’s
face helped the police
in tracing and appre-
hending him for al-
legedly molesting a
17-year-old girl in a
public place here, po-
lice said.
The incident took
place on August 11
when the girl was go-
ing on a sky walk on
Ghodbunder Road in
Thane city
.
Nilesh Sonawane,
Assistant Commission-
er of Police, Vartak Na-
gar division, told re-
porters on Monday
evening that the ac-
cused allegedly
grabbed her from be-
hind and molested her.
Resisting the man’s
move, the girl bit his
face and managed to
escape his grasp. She
then rushed to a near-
by police station and
filed a complaint, upon
which the police regis-
tered a FIR against the
unidentified culprit.
A number of neti-
zens had expressed
concern over the safety
of women and girls in
public places after the
incident.
Police laterlaunched
a search for the ac-
cused and examined
CCTV footage of the
area. The only clue
with the police was
that the culprit would
have bite marks on the
face, he said.
Late Sunday night,
the police zeroed-in on
the accused, Dinesh
Gaud (33), a resident of
Manorama Nagar in
Manpada area, based
on intelligence inputs.
They identified him
with the help of the
bite marks on his face
and arrested him, the
official said.
The accused was
booked under Indian
Penal Code Section 354-
A (sexual harassment)
and provisions of the
Protection of Children
from Sexual Offences
(POCSO) Act.

TEENAGE GIRL RAPED IN
AURANGABAD; 5 ARRESTED,
MINOR BOY DETAINED
Aurangabad: A
17-year-old girl
was allegedly
raped repeatedly
by five men and a
minor boy in Au-
rangabad district, police said on Tuesday
.
One of the accused allegedly raped the
girl, a resident of Kannad taluka, at a farm
in a village on Friday following which the
crime came to light, a senior official said.
On Saturday, the girl’s parents ap-
proached local police who arrested the five
men, in the age group of 19 to 33 years, and
detained the juvenile the same day, he said.
The accused were booked under Indian
Penal Code Section 376 (rape) and provi-
sions of the Protection of Children from
Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, he said.
After arrest, the five men were produced
before a court which sent them in police
custody till August 17. The minor accused
was sent to a juvenile home, the official
said.

FOR NITISH KUMAR
 LALU’S SONS
ith the Rashtriya Ja-
nata Dal (RJD) get-
ting the lion’s share
in Tuesday’s cabinet
expansion the fear of
lawlessness returning to Bihar
has been revived. Of the 31 in-
ducted, 16 of RJD have got min-
isterial berths. Law and order
was at its nadir under Lalu Pras-
ad Yadav with kidnappings, ex-
tortions and murders, not to
speak of corruption, haunting
the people. The present coalition
has Lalu’s son Tejashwi Yadav
as Deputy Chief Minister.
Tejashwi’s brother Tej Pratap
Yadav is the new Environment
Minister, a ministry which is
regarded as a gold mine. Chief
Minister Nitish Kumar holds
the Home portfolio.
The second coming of the
RJD-Janata Dal - United (JDU)
alliance will have two-year ten-
ure before it faces its first test in
the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Nitish Kumar is aspiring for a
national role in 2024 and his po-
litical future will depend on the
performance of the present gov-
ernment. In that respect, Lalu’s
two sons also face a perform or
perish situation.

egislators belong-
ing to the Eknath
Shinde camp have
started showing
their true charac-
ter just over a month after
the Sena-BJP government in
Maharashtra was sworn-in.
Amid differences between
the Shinde and Uddhav
Thackeray camps over which
faction is the real Sena,
Prakash Surve an MLA from
Magathane constituency, ex-
horted his supporters to
“break their leg, I will come
the next day to bail you out”,
apparently referring to
Thackeray camp’s leaders.
The other legislator, San-
tosh Bangar went and
slapped a private catering
company’s manager for pre-
paring sub-standard food.
The food, Bangar claimed,
was to be distributed to la-
bourers as a mid-day meal
and did not buy the manag-
er’s argument that it was go-
ing to be disposed of.
These incidents are re-
minders of how Shiv Sainiks
can subvert the rule of law
now that their faction is in
power with BJP’s support.
Surve’s exhortation to break
the legs of rivals is enough
encouragement for his fol-
lowers. There’s a turf war
between the Shinde and
Thackeray camps and it is
crucial for both the sides. Bal
Thackeray’s legacy is at
stake and so is the survival
of Uddhav Thackeray. He is
facing the risk of being mar-
ginalised the way he earlier
got his cousin Raj Thackeray,
leader of the Maharashtra
Navnirman Sena, sidelined
to wrest control of Shiv Sena.
Shiv Sainiks were probably
ontheirbestbehaviourduring
the rule of Maha Vikas Agha-
di, a three-party coalition of
Shiv Sena, Nationalist Con-
gress Party and the Congress.

L
MC heavy weight and the
party’s Birbhum district
president Anubrata Mondal,
who had evaded at least eight
CBI summons in the cattle
smuggling case, was taken
into custody on Thursday, re-
portedly for “not cooperat-
ing” with the agency
.
Popularly known as “Kes-
toda”, Mondal is among the
most trusted associates of
Chief Minister CM Mamata
Banerjee. He used to enjoy
more clout, power and visi-
bility in West Bengal even
than ministers and many
MLAs. He used to be consid-
ered as the “betaaj badshah”
of Birbhum!
Mondal, who has never
contested any election in his
career so far, has always
managed party affairs from
behind the scenes. In the 2019
Lok Sabha polls, TMC won
both Bolpur and Birbhum.
TMC repeated the act in the
2021 Assembly polls as it
managed a clean sweep in the
district, winning 10 out of 11
seats – and the victory was
entirely credited to the booth
management skills of the po-
litical heavyweight Mondal!
It may be noted that in both
these elections, the Election
Commission had kept him
under hawkeye surveillance
after the poll panel received
complaints that he could re-
portedly influence voters in a
major way
.
With his arrest, the CBI is
probing a bigger conspiracy
(possibly) the “role” of other
politicians in the case. Mon-
dal’s arrest came soon after
former state minister Partha
Chatterjee was arrested by
the ED in the SSC scam. Both
are TMC heavyweights and
it’s not tough to guess how
the arrests could have been
major setbacks for the party
.
Agencies like the ED and
CBI had earlier stepped up
investigations into Ponzi
schemes in Bengal ahead of
the 2013 panchayat polls, the
2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elec-
tions and the 2016 Assembly
elections and made several
arrests too.
And now with the Lok Sab-
ha polls barely two years
away in 2024, the cattle smug-
gling investigation may accel-
erate, feel political analysts.
It may be noted that West
Bengal has 42 Lok Sabha
seats and the BJP in the 2019
parliamentaryelections man-
aged to clinch 18 of them. It
goes without saying that for
the TMC, given its national
ambition, each of these seats
will be important as the bat-
tle will go down to the wire.
Investigators so far have
found evidence of illegal
cross-border selling of cattle
and use of ill-gotten money.
According to the CBI, Mon-
dal “procured huge number
of cattle” from the Ilambazar
Pashuhat and allegedly en-
sured safe passage of the
same to the border along
Bangladesh.
ABOUT THE CASE
A case was registered by the
CBI on September 21 way
back in 2020 against four ac-
cused, including Satish Ku-
mar, who was the Comman-
dant of the BSF’s 36 Battalion
in Malda during the time
span between December 19,
2015 to April 22, 2017. The FIR
also alleges that during Ku-
mar’s tenure, the BSF seized
more than 20,000 heads of
cattle before they could be
transported across the bor-
der, but the vehicles ferrying
the same were not confiscat-
ed and also persons involved
were not even apprehended.
CBI’S TAKE IN THE CASE?
According to the CBI, Mon-
dal is directly involved in the
case and was in touch with
the main accused, Enamul
Haque, through his aide Sai-
gal Hossain. The CBI also al-
leged that Saigal had collect-
ed money which was part of
the proceeds from this illegal
trade “in the name” of the
strongman.
WHAT MAMATA SAID?
West Bengal Chief Minister
Mamata Banerjee on Sunday
said she will stand with the
strongman and announced to
“start a movement” against
alleged excesses of the CBI
and the ED.
She told at a gathering,
“What has Kesto done? Even
as he was locked in his house,
we won the Assembly elec-
tions last year. The ED and
CBI ransacked his house at
midnight. If you arrest one
Kesto, we will create thou-
sands of them. We will hit the
streets from August 16 on the
‘Khela Hobe Divas’. There
will be ‘Khela hobe’, again
(Let the game start, again).”
Several TMC leaders, in-
cluding political analysts had
initially thought that Mama-
ta would not stand by Anu-
brata as she did when anoth-
er TMC heavyweight Partha
Chatterjee was arrested.
Chatterjee was removed from
the cabinet and was also sus-
pended from the party
.
Blasting the BJP, CPI(M)
and the Congress, the CM
said, “They all are comrades
in arms. They have no place
in this state. They do not have
a place in the country either.”
In a veiled attack against
the BJP
, she also claimed that
the West Bengal Police had
saved the Jharkhand govern-
ment following the arrest of
three Congress MLAs with a
huge cash haul. “They (BJP)
would have toppled the
Jharkhand government. Now
they called our officers to
Delhi out of revenge. Why is
the central government har-
assingourofficers”sheasked.
The 62-year-old “Kestoda”
who hails from a farmer’s
family, has been with the
TMC since the party was
launched in 1998. He is well
known for the Khela Hobe
slogan. He first hit the head-
lines during the 2013 pan-
chayat election.
It may be noted that Mon-
dal has been named in a num-
ber of cases, including for
threatening people, murder
and those related to stone
and cattle-smuggling, sand
but has never been tried.
Mondal’s clout can be
gauged from the fact that in
February 2022, he was includ-
ed in the TMC’s national
working committee. He was
the only district-level leader
who managed to make it to
the top TMC organisation.
Both Partha and Anubrata
were heavyweights, but Par-
tha was never a mass leader,
but Anubrata was crucial to
the party’s organisation in
western and central districts.
Even as party leaders feel
that the top leaders’ silence
and maintaining a distance
from every arrested leader
couldhaveabacklashfromthe
workers on the ground, the
TMC is apparently planning a
protest against the alleged ex-
cesses of the central agencies.

New Delhi: It seems
that the issue sur-
rounding leadership in
the Congress party is
bound to hang for a
long time as it is still
unclear, even though it
is middle of August
2022, as to who will be
the National President
of the grand-old-party?
Rahul Gandhi has
not given his consent
yet to become party’s
national president and
thus, in such a situa-
tion, the high com-
mand is considering
some other name.
Word within the par-
ty’s relevant circle is
that the name of Mall-
ikarjun Kharge was
thought about in the
past and according to
sources, Kharge is at
the forefront of the
race and consensus
can be formed in the
party in the name of
Kharge.
However, a senior
leader close to Rahul
Gandhi did not agree
on this. It has been
contested that if con-
sent is made in the
name of Kharge, then
there will be another
challenge before the
party, i.e. Organization
General Secretary KC
Venugopal and Nation-
al President will both
be from South.
Now many big lead-
ers of the party are
waiting for Rahul Gan-
dhi’s approval. Mean-
while, Rahul Gandhi is
going to start India
Jodo Yatra from 7th
September.
In such a situation,
this big issue is still
hanging in the party
amid nationwide
movements.
Reluctant Rahul, hesitant leaders: Is this a recipe
for another ‘presidency-goofup’ in Congress?

Bilkis’ family surprised on release of 11 convicts
Ahmedabad (PTI): The
husband of Bilkis Bano
on Tuesday said they
were surprised after
coming to know from
the media about the re-
lease of all 11 convicts
sentenced to life impris-
onment for her gang
rape and murder of
seven members of her

Gujarat riots.
Bilkis Bano’s hus-

PTI that he does not in-

latest development in
the case on Monday
.
Rasul said he, his
wife and five sons, the
eldest now aged 20, con-
tinue to live without a
fixed address, more
than 20 years after the
incident.
The 11 convicts on
Monday walked out of
the Godhra sub-jail af-
ter the Gujarat govern-
ment allowed their re-

sion policy
.
A special CBI court

charge of gang rape and
murder of seven mem-
bers of Bilkis Bano’s

5-month low of 13.93%
IN JULY
New Delhi (PTI): The
wholesale price-based in-

month low of 13.93% in
July on easing prices of
food articles and manufac-
tured products.
The WPI-based inflation
softened for the second con-
secutive month in July,
raising hopes of further
decline in wholesale prices
in the months to come.
The Wholesale Price In-
dex-based inflation, after
scaling a record high of

15.18% in June. It was
13.43% in February

tinued its declining trend

tured products and oil

4.06%, respectively
.
CRCL LLP CEO and
Managing Partner DRE
Reddy said higher crude oil
prices and input costs still
weigh on the producers
and pass-through has re-
sulted in pushing the retail
inflation higher.
“The global economy is
recovering as we witness
an increase in demand for
metals, oils, crude and fer-
tilisers. Moving forward,
as the crude prices soften
in the summer season and
supply issues getting re-
solved will help ease WPI
inflation in the next few
months,” Reddy added.
The RBI mainly looks at
retail inflation to frame
monetary policy. Retail in-
flation remained above the
RBI’s comfort level for the
seventh month in a row.

Bengaluru (PTI): SBI
Chairman Dinesh Khara
on Tuesday said that things
might get “better” on the
inflation front towards the
end of September.
He said the supply side
constraints getting ad-
dressed and crude oil pric-
es trending low will help
ease the situation.
“Inflation...The recent
numbers which came out
was 6.7. Going forward the
way things are - the supply
side constraints which are
there are getting ad-
dressed, so the situation
should be improving going
forward,” he said in re-
sponse to a question.
Speaking to reporters
here, he said one of the im-
portant factors of inflation
is crude oil prices, and with
them also trending lower, it
will also support the infla-
tion to be further tapered
down. “...Overall expecta-
tion is that, maybe towards
theendof Septemberthings
might look to be even better
as compared to what you
are seeing (now),” he added.
Further pointing out
that policy rates by RBI is a
very key component for in-
flation, Khara in response
to a question said, the poli-
cy rates are the outcome of
the MPC meeting, which
assesses multiple data
points before they
arrive at any decision. “So
I think we will have to wait
and watch till the next
MPC meeting happens, but
I think till such time in the
intermediary phase, I feel
that the supply side con-
straints are getting
addressed,”he added.

The Government e-Mar-

ment platform for govt buy-

Mumbai: The Maha
Yuti coalition led by
Chief Minister
Eknath Shinde, and
Deputy CM Devendra
Fadnavis will face its
first big test in the
state legislature to-
day. The Leader of
Opposition in the As-
sembly, Nationalist
Congress Party (NCP)
leader Ajit Pawar,
Shiv Sena’s Ambadas
Danve vowed to take
on the government
over multiple issues
at a press meet on
Tuesday.
Addressing media
persons, they shared
their plans to touch on
various issues includ-
ing financial aid to dis-
tressed farmers affect-
ed by floods, Bhandara
rape case, staying of
decisions by the previ-
ous Maha Vikas Aghadi
(MVA) government,
among others.
Pawar and Danve on
Tuesday boycotted the
customary tea meeting
with the CM and Dy
CM, and submitted a
seven to eight page pro-
test letter instead, slam-
ming the government
on several issues.
Defending the new
government, Fadnavis
said, “The Maha Yuti is
a people-oriented gov-
ernment, and in 46
days, people can see the
difference. When the
MVA government was
in power, the Mantra-
laya was empty, the
Sahyadri guest house
was empty
, and even the
Minister’s bungalows
(opposite Mantralaya)
were empty. Now, there
is no space in these
places to enter.”
Taking on Pawar’s
criticism that the Shin-
de-Fadnavis govern-
ment had failed to pro-
vide financial assis-
tance to farmers reeling
under floods and crop
losses, Fadnavis said,
“It took nine months for
the MVA government
between announcing
financial aid, and actu-
ally disbursing it. Com-
paratively, 95% of the
‘panchanamas’ (sur-
vey) of rain damages
have been completed.
As soon as supplemen-
tary demands in the
budget are approved
during the Session, the
aid will be disbursed.”
Shinde also coun-
tered Pawar’s claims on
financial aid by stating
that the Maha Yuti gov-
ernment will be dis-
bursing double the fi-
nancial aid distributed
by the MVA govern-
ment. “The MVA gov-
ernment had an-
nounced Rs25,000 per
hectare for farmers
with two hectare land,
while Maha Yuti is pro-
viding Rs36,000 hectare
to farmers with three
hectare land,” he said.
Responding to Pa-
war’s allegations that
the Maha Yuti govern-
ment was vengeful in
staying decisions by the
MVA, Shinde said, “The
MVA government is-
sued 300 to 500 GRs in
their final days in office
by allocating funds in
an indiscriminate man-
ner. We have not stayed
any, but are conducting
a review of funds allo-
cated. The MVA stayed
projects for 2.5 years,
but we will allow appro-
priate funds for public
interest projects wher-
ever necessary
.”

Mumbai: Bollywood
singer and composer
Rahul Jain was
booked on the charg-
es of raping a 30-year-
old woman—a cos-
tume designer, in a
FIR lodged on last
Tuesday by the vic-
tim at the Oshiwara
police station.
Based on the state-
ment of the victim, the
police have registered a
case under 376 against
the singer and have
started an investiga-
tion.
Jain reportedly
called the woman at his
Lokhandwala residence
on the pretext of giving
her a job and then raped
her. The singer, on the
other hand, has termed
these accusations as
baseless.
The victim in her
statement said that Ra-
hul had threatened her
of dire consequences,
if she told anything
about the incident to
anyone.
He said, “If you tell
anyone, I will kill you. I
will end your career.”
“No arrest has been
made so far. But the po-
lice will be interrogat-
ing Rahul very soon,” a

Mumbai: Cultural Af-
fairs Minister Sudhir
Mungantiwar on
Tuesday said that state
government officials
were not mandated to
say ‘Vande Mataram’
while receiving phone
calls.
However, he clarified
that any equivalent
words that reflect na-
tionalism could be used
to attend the phone
calls. The clarification
came after he received
widespread flak from
Opposition parties over
the directive.
Mungantiwar on Sun-
day had said that be-
cause the country was
celebrating the 75th an-
niversary of Independ-
ence, all officials of the
state government must
say ‘Vande Mataram’,
instead of ‘hello’ while
receiving phone calls in
offices till January 26
(RepublicDay)nextyear.
On Tuesday, however,
the minister said on tel-
evision that “saying
Vande Mataram is not
mandatory

“Any word or words
equivalent to ‘Vande
Mataram’, which infuse
nationalism can be

Several areas of Na-

According to the state

the water levels in dams
in the district had in-
creased, which com-
pelled authorities to

Mumbai: In a major
crackdown on drug
dealers, Mumbai’s
Anti Narcotics Cell’s
Worli unit busted a
drug factory in An-
kleshwar area of
Bharuch district in
Gujarat on Tuesday.
The team recovered
around 513kg of me-
phedrone drugs
worth Rs1,026 crore,
as per international
market rates, in this
raid. Officials also
successfully appre-
hended seven ac-
cused, including a
woman, during the
operation.
The owner of the
unit, who holds a mas-
ter’s degree in chemis-
try, was also arrested. It
was one of the biggest
drug seizures by the
city police in recent
times, said Deputy
Commissioner of Po-
lice of ANC Datta Nala-
wade.
Officials acted on a
tip-off and nabbed its
owner Giriraj Dixit
while seizing 513kg of
mephedrone, he said.
For several months,
the ANC has been con-
ducting anti-drug oper-
ations throughout the
state. DCP Anti Narcot-
ics Cell, Datta Nala-
wade, told media per-
sons, “The ANC unit of
the Mumbai Police had
seized 703kg of mephe-
drone worth Rs1,400
crore in the interna-
tional market from Nal-
asopara area of Palghar
district on August 03.
They also arrested five
drug peddlers. Earlier
in April, a squad had
confiscated another
batch of this drug from
the same region in Pal-
ghar.”
Shamshullah Obhed-
ullah Khan (38), Ayub
Izhar Ahmed Sheikh
(33), Reshma Sanjayku-
mar Chandan (49), Ri-
yazAbdulSattarMenon
(43), Prem Prakash Par-
asnath Singh (52) and
Kiran Pawar were ar-
rested during the raid,
the official said. Follow-
ing their interrogation,
the ANC zeroed in on
Dixit, Nalawade added.
The mephedrone
manufactured in Dixit’s
factory was meant to be
supplied to drug ped-
dlers in Mumbai and
neighbouring areas, he
said.
Dixit and a co-ac-
cused perfected the for-
mula for producing me-
phedrone through ex-
periments.
The racket began to
unravel after the ANC
Worli team arrested a
drug peddler in eastern
Mumbai's Govandi area
in March this year and
seized 250 grams of the
drug from him, the of-
ficial said. It led to the
arrest of two persons
including a woman and
seizure of 2.7 kg of me-
phedrone.
The ANC subse-
quently arrested anoth-
er accused which was
followed by the raid in
Nalasopara.
“We have now made a
seventh arrest in this
case,” said DCP Nala-
wade.

Mumbai: Even as the

lature during the
Monsoon Session on
Wednesday, Chief
Whip of the Uddhav

of the Sena.
According to the or-
der, all MLAs should
mandatorily be present
during daily proceed-

Session, which will last
till August 25.
No reaction has come
from the faction led by
Chief Minister Eknath

Days after the verti-

mer CM Uddhav Thack-
eray’s faction had re-
moved Shinde as the
Shiv Sena’s leader of
the Legislature Party
. It
had appointed Ajay
Chaudhari as the re-

Amid claims of being
the ‘real’ Shiv Sena, the
Shinde group respond-
ed by reappointing the
CM as the leader of the
legislature party, and
replacing Prabhu as the
chief whip with rebel
MLAs Bharat Gogavale.
While Speaker of the

Rahul Narwekar has
approved Gogavale as

as the Shiv Sena is still
pending before the Su-

OTHER DRUG BUSTS BY AGENCIES THIS YEAR
In June, drugs worth crores of rupees were seized in the seacoast region of Gu-
jarat. In Jakhau of Gujarat’s Kutch district, the Border Security Force (BSF) and
Kutch police had recovered a huge quantity of heroin, in a joint operation. At the
same time, last year a consignment of 3,000kg of drugs was caught at the Mun-
dra port in Gujarat in September 2021. Its value in the international market was
said to be Rs21,000 crore. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had
recovered 3,000kg of heroin from two containers imported from Afghanistan.
Two people were also arrested from Chennai in connection with the case.
A similar situation had plagued the district due to heavy downpour last month as well. —ANI PHOTO

Krushna Jadhav was deputed as the personal secretary to newly installed Public Health and Family Welfare Ministers Tanaji Sawant. Another rebel-Shiv Sena MLA turned minister in the Shin- de-led government, Sanjay Rathod, the newly minted Food and Drugs Adminis- tration (FDA) minis- ter has also been allot- ted another Shinde aide Jayram Pawar. According to a per- son familiar with the development, “This is the same pattern that was introduced by Bharatiya Janata Par- ty’s (BJP) Devendra Fadnavis, when he be- came the CM in 2014. He had similarly ap- pointed personal sec- retaries to various BJP ministers in his cabinet, in order to ef- fectively ensure real- time knowledge of the goings on in the de- partments of his BJP colleagues. Shinde has taken a leaf out of Fadnavis’ book of pru- dent governance, it would appear.” On the other hand, a senior BJP leader-- while not denying the striking similarity in the appointments of personal secretaries in the Shinde camp of MLAs-- added, “The fact remains that there is a huge differ- ence in the BJP-sup- ported government installed in Maha- rashtra today and the previous govern- ment, Turn to P6 CM Shinde met with late singer Lata Mangeshkar’s sister Usha Mangeshkar, brother Hridaynath’s son Adinath Mangeshkar, and singer Suresh Wadkar regarding the International Music College to be named after the singing legend, on Tuesday. The singing should be completed between 11 am and 11.01 am across the state, it said. Participation is manda- tory for all state gov- ernment departments, universities and col- leges while citizens are also expected to take part in the singing, said a government order is- sued last week. It is part of the Union government’s Swaraj Mahotsav, said the or- der. A video on Monday went viral on social me- dia platforms wherein MLA Prakash Surve was also seen assuring his supporters to bail them out if they face any legal action. Later, workers of the Thacker- ay-led Sena complained to police, seeking action against Surve, the legis- lator from Magathane in northwest Mumbai. In the video, the MLA was seen saying, “We will not be complacent. Speaking to the me- dia, the NCP leader demanded that the state government pro- vide an assistance of Rs75,000 per hectare to rain-affected farmers. “Crops on more than15lakhhectareof land have been dam- aged due to excess rainfall and there is a possibility of more damages, as the rain activity has in- creased,” Pawar said. He further said, the CM should declare a wet drought in the state so that more as- sistance can be given to farmers. Pawar also men- tioned about boycott- ing the high tea invita- tion extended by the CM Eknath Shinde. Instead of talking about making the GST more business-friend- ly and inflation, this government is coming up with unnecessary initiativeslikemaking state government offi- cials say ‘Vande Mata- ram’ while receiving phone calls, he said. In some places (states), officials give in writing that leaders are demanding bribes from them. How unfortunate it is for the country. But have you ever heard of corrup- tion involving any min- ister in the Centre or the prime minister?” Koshyari asked. He further added that PM Modi wants to root out corruption from the country and for that citi- zens’ support is needed. “For making India ‘Jagatguru’ (world lead- er) in the next 25 years, everyone should do hard work, practice honesty and imbibe a sense of ‘samarpan’ (dedication) towards the country,” he said. PUNE WOMAN DUPED OF `79L OVER RESTAURANT CHAIN PROMISE First India Bureau Palghar: A pregnant tribal woman lost two of her twins at birth as a result of the de- lay in reaching a medical centre. She was carried in a makeshift dooly (stretcher ) from her village in Palghar, which is around 3 km away from the medi- cal facility. The incident took place on Monday, when the woman from Mar- katwadi village in Mokhuda taluka of Pal- ghar, who was seven months pregnant, went into labour premature- ly . She was carried 3 km to the main road from Markatwadi village amid heavy rains, a doctor said on Tuesday . An ambulance rushed the woman to the Khodala PHC (Pub- lic Health Centre), where she delivered twins, who died at birth, said Dr Pushpa Mathure of the medical facility . If the woman had reached the medical fa- cility on time, she could have got the required medical attention and the babies could have been saved, said Ma- thure adding that the woman’s condition is stable. Patients are often brought to the PHC (Public Health Centre) in makeshift stretchers made of a saree or cloth tied to a bamboo stick as ambulances are not able to reach over there due to lack of proper roads. “The women from re- mote villages are nor- mally shifted to the PHC during the eighth or ninth month of their pregnancy for deliv- ery” the doctor said. It is to be noted that District Magistrate Go- vind Bodke had visited the area last week and had instructed the con- cerned officials to begin road construction in the area. It has also directed the building’s occupants to vacate the premis- es within three weeks. In an order passed on August 11, the court noted that as the build- ing HN Petit Widows Home was located on a busy road it could lead to loss of lives, if any untoward incident oc- curred. A division bench comprising Justice RD Dhanuka and Justice Kamal Khata upheld the BMC technical advi- sory committee’s (TAC) decision that the build- ing had to be demol- ished as it was in a di- lapidated and danger- ous condition. Based on the commit- tee’s report, in April this year, the BMC is- sued a letter to the building’s landlord to vacate the premises. A few occupants of the building and ten- ants who run shops on its ground floor, how- ever, refused to vacate the premises. They moved the high court arguing that the struc- ture only needed minor repairs. The ground plus five floor structure is more than a century old and was used for providing hostel facilities to wid- ows. In fact, due to the building’s poor condi- tion, the widows resid- ing there were moved to another hostel in 2019. The civic body’s TAC held a structural audit meet in October 2021, wherein it came to the conclusion that the building was in a dilap- idated condition and may collapse. The high court in its order noted that the TAC had rightly formed its opinion, and said it was not inclined to form a differing opin- ion. “If this building is al- lowed to be retained, if any untoward incident occurs then there will be a loss of lives not only of the occupants of the building but also passersby,” said the bench. The High Court, while upholding the TAC’s decision and the BMC’s letter of April 2022, directed the occu- pants to vacate the premises within three weeks so that the build- ing could be demol- ished. If the occupants do not vacate the premises, then the BMC can take forcible possession and carry out demolition, said the court. The incident took place on August 11 when the girl was go- ing on a sky walk on Ghodbunder Road in Thane city . Nilesh Sonawane, Assistant Commission- er of Police, Vartak Na- gar division, told re- porters on Monday evening that the ac- cused allegedly grabbed her from be- hind and molested her. Resisting the man’s move, the girl bit his face and managed to escape his grasp. She then rushed to a near- by police station and filed a complaint, upon which the police regis- tered a FIR against the unidentified culprit. A number of neti- zens had expressed concern over the safety of women and girls in public places after the incident. Police laterlaunched a search for the ac- cused and examined CCTV footage of the area. The only clue with the police was that the culprit would have bite marks on the face, he said. Late Sunday night, the police zeroed-in on the accused, Dinesh Gaud (33), a resident of Manorama Nagar in Manpada area, based on intelligence inputs. They identified him with the help of the bite marks on his face and arrested him, the official said. The accused was booked under Indian Penal Code Section 354- A (sexual harassment) and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Of the 31 in- ducted, 16 of RJD have got min- isterial berths. Law and order was at its nadir under Lalu Pras- ad Yadav with kidnappings, ex- tortions and murders, not to speak of corruption, haunting the people. The present coalition has Lalu’s son Tejashwi Yadav as Deputy Chief Minister. Tejashwi’s brother Tej Pratap Yadav is the new Environment Minister, a ministry which is regarded as a gold mine. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar holds the Home portfolio. The second coming of the RJD-Janata Dal - United (JDU) alliance will have two-year ten- ure before it faces its first test in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Nitish Kumar is aspiring for a national role in 2024 and his po- litical future will depend on the performance of the present gov- ernment. In that respect, Lalu’s two sons also face a perform or perish situation. W egislators belong- ing to the Eknath Shinde camp have started showing their true charac- ter just over a month after the Sena-BJP government in Maharashtra was sworn-in. Amid differences between the Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray camps over which faction is the real Sena, Prakash Surve an MLA from Magathane constituency, ex- horted his supporters to “break their leg, I will come the next day to bail you out”, apparently referring to Thackeray camp’s leaders. The other legislator, San- tosh Bangar went and slapped a private catering company’s manager for pre- paring sub-standard food. The food, Bangar claimed, was to be distributed to la- bourers as a mid-day meal and did not buy the manag- er’s argument that it was go- ing to be disposed of. These incidents are re- minders of how Shiv Sainiks can subvert the rule of law now that their faction is in power with BJP’s support. Surve’s exhortation to break the legs of rivals is enough encouragement for his fol- lowers. There’s a turf war between the Shinde and Thackeray camps and it is crucial for both the sides. Bal Thackeray’s legacy is at stake and so is the survival of Uddhav Thackeray. He is facing the risk of being mar- ginalised the way he earlier got his cousin Raj Thackeray, leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, sidelined to wrest control of Shiv Sena. Shiv Sainiks were probably ontheirbestbehaviourduring the rule of Maha Vikas Agha- di, a three-party coalition of Shiv Sena, Nationalist Con- gress Party and the Congress. With Shinde pulling the rug fromunderUddhav’sfeet, will they still remain disciplined as before is difficult to say . SENA MLAs ARE BACK TO THEIR OLD WAYS There’s a turf war between the Shinde and Thackeray camps and it is crucial for both the sides. Bal Thackeray’s legacy is at stake and so is the survival of Uddhav Thackeray L MC heavy weight and the party’s Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal, who had evaded at least eight CBI summons in the cattle smuggling case, was taken into custody on Thursday, re- portedly for “not cooperat- ing” with the agency . Popularly known as “Kes- toda”, Mondal is among the most trusted associates of Chief Minister CM Mamata Banerjee. He used to enjoy more clout, power and visi- bility in West Bengal even than ministers and many MLAs. He used to be consid- ered as the “betaaj badshah” of Birbhum! Mondal, who has never contested any election in his career so far, has always managed party affairs from behind the scenes. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, TMC won both Bolpur and Birbhum. TMC repeated the act in the 2021 Assembly polls as it managed a clean sweep in the district, winning 10 out of 11 seats – and the victory was entirely credited to the booth management skills of the po- litical heavyweight Mondal! It may be noted that in both these elections, the Election Commission had kept him under hawkeye surveillance after the poll panel received complaints that he could re- portedly influence voters in a major way . With his arrest, the CBI is probing a bigger conspiracy (possibly) the “role” of other politicians in the case. Mon- dal’s arrest came soon after former state minister Partha Chatterjee was arrested by the ED in the SSC scam. Both are TMC heavyweights and it’s not tough to guess how the arrests could have been major setbacks for the party . Agencies like the ED and CBI had earlier stepped up investigations into Ponzi schemes in Bengal ahead of the 2013 panchayat polls, the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elec- tions and the 2016 Assembly elections and made several arrests too. And now with the Lok Sab- ha polls barely two years away in 2024, the cattle smug- gling investigation may accel- erate, feel political analysts. It may be noted that West Bengal has 42 Lok Sabha seats and the BJP in the 2019 parliamentaryelections man- aged to clinch 18 of them. It goes without saying that for the TMC, given its national ambition, each of these seats will be important as the bat- tle will go down to the wire. Investigators so far have found evidence of illegal cross-border selling of cattle and use of ill-gotten money. According to the CBI, Mon- dal “procured huge number of cattle” from the Ilambazar Pashuhat and allegedly en- sured safe passage of the same to the border along Bangladesh. ABOUT THE CASE A case was registered by the CBI on September 21 way back in 2020 against four ac- cused, including Satish Ku- mar, who was the Comman- dant of the BSF’s 36 Battalion in Malda during the time span between December 19, 2015 to April 22, 2017. The FIR also alleges that during Ku- mar’s tenure, the BSF seized more than 20,000 heads of cattle before they could be transported across the bor- der, but the vehicles ferrying the same were not confiscat- ed and also persons involved were not even apprehended. CBI’S TAKE IN THE CASE? According to the CBI, Mon- dal is directly involved in the case and was in touch with the main accused, Enamul Haque, through his aide Sai- gal Hossain. The CBI also al- leged that Saigal had collect- ed money which was part of the proceeds from this illegal trade “in the name” of the strongman. WHAT MAMATA SAID? West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said she will stand with the strongman and announced to “start a movement” against alleged excesses of the CBI and the ED. She told at a gathering, “What has Kesto done? Even as he was locked in his house, we won the Assembly elec- tions last year. The ED and CBI ransacked his house at midnight. If you arrest one Kesto, we will create thou- sands of them. We will hit the streets from August 16 on the ‘Khela Hobe Divas’. There will be ‘Khela hobe’, again (Let the game start, again).” Several TMC leaders, in- cluding political analysts had initially thought that Mama- ta would not stand by Anu- brata as she did when anoth- er TMC heavyweight Partha Chatterjee was arrested. Chatterjee was removed from the cabinet and was also sus- pended from the party . Blasting the BJP, CPI(M) and the Congress, the CM said, “They all are comrades in arms. They have no place in this state. They do not have a place in the country either.” In a veiled attack against the BJP , she also claimed that the West Bengal Police had saved the Jharkhand govern- ment following the arrest of three Congress MLAs with a huge cash haul. “They (BJP) would have toppled the Jharkhand government. Now they called our officers to Delhi out of revenge. Why is the central government har- assingourofficers”sheasked. The 62-year-old “Kestoda” who hails from a farmer’s family, has been with the TMC since the party was launched in 1998. He is well known for the Khela Hobe slogan. He first hit the head- lines during the 2013 pan- chayat election. It may be noted that Mon- dal has been named in a num- ber of cases, including for threatening people, murder and those related to stone and cattle-smuggling, sand but has never been tried. Mondal’s clout can be gauged from the fact that in February 2022, he was includ- ed in the TMC’s national working committee. He was the only district-level leader who managed to make it to the top TMC organisation. Both Partha and Anubrata were heavyweights, but Par- tha was never a mass leader, but Anubrata was crucial to the party’s organisation in western and central districts. Rahul Gandhi has not given his consent yet to become party’s national president and thus, in such a situa- tion, the high com- mand is considering some other name. Word within the par- ty’s relevant circle is that the name of Mall- ikarjun Kharge was thought about in the past and according to sources, Kharge is at the forefront of the race and consensus can be formed in the party in the name of Kharge. However, a senior leader close to Rahul Gandhi did not agree on this. It has been contested that if con- sent is made in the name of Kharge, then there will be another challenge before the party, i.e. Organization General Secretary KC Venugopal and Nation- al President will both be from South. Now many big lead- ers of the party are waiting for Rahul Gan- dhi’s approval. Mean- while, Rahul Gandhi is going to start India Jodo Yatra from 7th September. In such a situation, this big issue is still hanging in the party amid nationwide movements. Reluctant Rahul, hesitant leaders: Is this a recipe for another ‘presidency-goofup’ in Congress? He said the supply side constraints getting ad- dressed and crude oil pric- es trending low will help ease the situation. “Inflation...The recent numbers which came out was 6.7. Going forward the way things are - the supply side constraints which are there are getting ad- dressed, so the situation should be improving going forward,” he said in re- sponse to a question. Speaking to reporters here, he said one of the im- portant factors of inflation is crude oil prices, and with them also trending lower, it will also support the infla- tion to be further tapered down. “...Overall expecta- tion is that, maybe towards theendof Septemberthings might look to be even better as compared to what you are seeing (now),” he added. Further pointing out that policy rates by RBI is a very key component for in- flation, Khara in response to a question said, the poli- cy rates are the outcome of the MPC meeting, which assesses multiple data points before they arrive at any decision. “So I think we will have to wait and watch till the next MPC meeting happens, but I think till such time in the intermediary phase, I feel that the supply side con- straints are getting addressed,”he added. • 9. First India Bureau Mumbai: The Maha Yuti coalition led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis will face its first big test in the state legislature to- day. The Leader of Opposition in the As- sembly, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar, Shiv Sena’s Ambadas Danve vowed to take on the government over multiple issues at a press meet on Tuesday. Addressing media persons, they shared their plans to touch on various issues includ- ing financial aid to dis- tressed farmers affect- ed by floods, Bhandara rape case, staying of decisions by the previ- ous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, among others. Pawar and Danve on Tuesday boycotted the customary tea meeting with the CM and Dy CM, and submitted a seven to eight page pro- test letter instead, slam- ming the government on several issues. Defending the new government, Fadnavis said, “The Maha Yuti is a people-oriented gov- ernment, and in 46 days, people can see the difference. When the MVA government was in power, the Mantra- laya was empty, the Sahyadri guest house was empty , and even the Minister’s bungalows (opposite Mantralaya) were empty. Now, there is no space in these places to enter.” Taking on Pawar’s criticism that the Shin- de-Fadnavis govern- ment had failed to pro- vide financial assis- tance to farmers reeling under floods and crop losses, Fadnavis said, “It took nine months for the MVA government between announcing financial aid, and actu- ally disbursing it. Com- paratively, 95% of the ‘panchanamas’ (sur- vey) of rain damages have been completed. As soon as supplemen- tary demands in the budget are approved during the Session, the aid will be disbursed.” Shinde also coun- tered Pawar’s claims on financial aid by stating that the Maha Yuti gov- ernment will be dis- bursing double the fi- nancial aid distributed by the MVA govern- ment. “The MVA gov- ernment had an- nounced Rs25,000 per hectare for farmers with two hectare land, while Maha Yuti is pro- viding Rs36,000 hectare to farmers with three hectare land,” he said. Responding to Pa- war’s allegations that the Maha Yuti govern- ment was vengeful in staying decisions by the MVA, Shinde said, “The MVA government is- sued 300 to 500 GRs in their final days in office by allocating funds in an indiscriminate man- ner. We have not stayed any, but are conducting a review of funds allo- cated. The MVA stayed projects for 2.5 years, but we will allow appro- priate funds for public interest projects wher- ever necessary .” MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17, 2022 08 2NDFRONT www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epapers/mumbai I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia It is absolutely amazing what the human mind can achieve once it decides to focus and work consistently. — Dr Jagdeesh Chandra, CEO Editor-in-Chief, First India Mumbai: Bollywood singer and composer Rahul Jain was booked on the charg- es of raping a 30-year- old woman—a cos- tume designer, in a FIR lodged on last Tuesday by the vic- tim at the Oshiwara police station. Based on the state- ment of the victim, the police have registered a case under 376 against the singer and have started an investiga- tion. Jain reportedly called the woman at his Lokhandwala residence on the pretext of giving her a job and then raped her. The singer, on the other hand, has termed these accusations as baseless. The victim in her statement said that Ra- hul had threatened her of dire consequences, if she told anything about the incident to anyone. He said, “If you tell anyone, I will kill you. I will end your career.” “No arrest has been made so far. But the po- lice will be interrogat- ing Rahul very soon,” a police official said. First India Bureau Mumbai: Cultural Af- fairs Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar on Tuesday said that state government officials were not mandated to say ‘Vande Mataram’ while receiving phone calls. However, he clarified that any equivalent words that reflect na- tionalism could be used to attend the phone calls. The clarification came after he received widespread flak from Opposition parties over the directive. Mungantiwar on Sun- day had said that be- cause the country was celebrating the 75th an- niversary of Independ- ence, all officials of the state government must say ‘Vande Mataram’, instead of ‘hello’ while receiving phone calls in offices till January 26 (RepublicDay)nextyear. On Tuesday, however, the minister said on tel- evision that “saying Vande Mataram is not mandatory .” “Any word or words equivalent to ‘Vande Mataram’, which infuse nationalism can be used while receiving a phone call,” he said. First India Bureau Nashik: The city, and parts of Nashik dis- trict were hit by in- cessant rains, raising the water levels to dangerous levels in the region’s dams and reservoirs on Tues- day. Rains also lashed T r i m b a k e s h w a r, Niphad, Chandwad, Sin- nar, Malegaon, Pimpal- gaon and Dindori in the district, said the official. According to the state Irrigation Department, the water levels in dams in the district had in- creased, which com- pelled authorities to start discharging water from various reservoirs. It was reported that till 6 pm on Tuesday evening, 10,202 cusec of water had been dis- charged from Darna dam, 1,520 cusec from Mukne dam, 2,250 cusec from Kadwa dam, 17,366 cusec from Palkhed dam and 31,849 cusec from Nandur-Madhya- meshwar dam. The water level in Go- davari, too, increased due to discharge of wa- ter from Gangapur dam. First India Bureau Mumbai: In a major crackdown on drug dealers, Mumbai’s Anti Narcotics Cell’s Worli unit busted a drug factory in An- kleshwar area of Bharuch district in Gujarat on Tuesday. The team recovered around 513kg of me- phedrone drugs worth Rs1,026 crore, as per international market rates, in this raid. Officials also successfully appre- hended seven ac- cused, including a woman, during the operation. The owner of the unit, who holds a mas- ter’s degree in chemis- try, was also arrested. It was one of the biggest drug seizures by the city police in recent times, said Deputy Commissioner of Po- lice of ANC Datta Nala- wade. Officials acted on a tip-off and nabbed its owner Giriraj Dixit while seizing 513kg of mephedrone, he said. For several months, the ANC has been con- ducting anti-drug oper- ations throughout the state. DCP Anti Narcot- ics Cell, Datta Nala- wade, told media per- sons, “The ANC unit of the Mumbai Police had seized 703kg of mephe- drone worth Rs1,400 crore in the interna- tional market from Nal- asopara area of Palghar district on August 03. They also arrested five drug peddlers. Earlier in April, a squad had confiscated another batch of this drug from the same region in Pal- ghar.” Shamshullah Obhed- ullah Khan (38), Ayub Izhar Ahmed Sheikh (33), Reshma Sanjayku- mar Chandan (49), Ri- yazAbdulSattarMenon (43), Prem Prakash Par- asnath Singh (52) and Kiran Pawar were ar- rested during the raid, the official said. Follow- ing their interrogation, the ANC zeroed in on Dixit, Nalawade added. The mephedrone manufactured in Dixit’s factory was meant to be supplied to drug ped- dlers in Mumbai and neighbouring areas, he said. Dixit and a co-ac- cused perfected the for- mula for producing me- phedrone through ex- periments. The racket began to unravel after the ANC Worli team arrested a drug peddler in eastern Mumbai's Govandi area in March this year and seized 250 grams of the drug from him, the of- ficial said. It led to the arrest of two persons including a woman and seizure of 2.7 kg of me- phedrone. The ANC subse- quently arrested anoth- er accused which was followed by the raid in Nalasopara. “We have now made a seventh arrest in this case,” said DCP Nala- wade. According to the or- der, all MLAs should mandatorily be present during daily proceed- ings of the Monsoon Session, which will last till August 25. No reaction has come from the faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, yet. Days after the verti- cal split in the Shiv Sena in June, the for- mer CM Uddhav Thack- eray’s faction had re- moved Shinde as the Shiv Sena’s leader of the Legislature Party . It had appointed Ajay Chaudhari as the re- placement to the post. Amid claims of being the ‘real’ Shiv Sena, the Shinde group respond- ed by reappointing the CM as the leader of the legislature party, and replacing Prabhu as the chief whip with rebel MLAs Bharat Gogavale. While Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Rahul Narwekar has approved Gogavale as the chief whip, the legal question over which faction has legitimacy as the Shiv Sena is still pending before the Su- preme Court.
