CM DEDICATES BAGODRA-TARAPUR SIX LANE ROAD
First India Bureau
Gandhinagar: Chief
Minister Bhupendra
Patel has clearly stat-
ed that the strong
connectivity of the
state is the main rea-
son for people of the
country and the world
choosing Gujarat for
industry and trade in-
vestments. In this re-
gard, he said that the
best infrastructure of
rail, road, air connec-
tivity developed by
Gujarat under the
guidance of Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi has established
the development of
the state as a role
model.
The Chief Minister
inaugurated the com-
pleted six lane opera-
tion of 54km Bagodra-
Tarapur-Vasad road
constructed at a cost of
Rs649 crore in the pres-
ence of Road and
Building Minister
Purneshbhai Modi on
Friday. The State Roads
and Buildings Depart-
ment has decided to
undertake the project
of 6 lanes of the entire
Bagodra-Tarapur-Vas-
ad road in two phases.
The six-lane operation
was completed in Octo-
ber 2021 at a cost of
Rs1,005 crore.
CM Patel added that
Gujarat is achieving
new milestones by giv-
ing a new impetus to
development under
the direction of PM
Modi. The Chief Min-
ister also added that
the politics of develop-
ment has shown the
people what is called
development by con-
necting the people of
remote villages with
facilities like roads,
water, education and
health. The CM said
that now people have
also accepted that Gu-
jarat means develop-
ment and development
means Gujarat.

4 Last year, Prime Minister Johnson and PM Modi agreed
on a UK-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,
announcing more than 530 million pounds in investment
into the UK and committing to a deeper bilateral relationship
across trade, health, climate, defence and security, and con-
necting our people. An ambitious “Roadmap 2030” was also
launched to steer the direction of the India-UK relationship
in this decade. PM Modi said they reviewed progress on this
roadmap today and set goals for the future.

“We aim to have a new

Dileep Sanghani seems unhappy with rumours of the Patidar leader defecting to BJP
First India Bureau
Ahmedabad: Rumours
of Congress Working
President Hardik Pa-
tel’s defection to the
Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) are swirling
around, after he praised
the ruling party for
their “decision-making
leadership”. This has
not gone down well
with a senior BJP lead-
er. On Friday, without
mentioning the Patidar
leader’s name, he im-
plied that the “BJP can-
not be a garbage collec-
tion bin.”
Dileep Sanghani, a
Leuva Patidar leader,
who has been associat-
ed with the party for
more than four decades,
is considered to be one
of the close confidants
of Prime Minister Nar-
endra Modi. When the
PM was deputed to Del-
hi as the BJP general
secretary, he stayed at
Sanghani’s official MP
residence.
According to sources,
Sanghani is unhappy
with news that the Con-
gress working presi-
dent is planning to join
the BJP.
Addressing local me-
dia persons on Friday,
Sanghani said, “Hardik
Patel is a betrayer.
When he was with the
Patidar Anamat An-
dolan Samiti (PAAS), he
hadstatedthathewould
not join politics. But
then, he joined the Con-
gress party. Now that
Congress is not giving
him any importance, he
is unhappy and is plan-
ning to quit. He can go
anywhere, but nobody
is going to trust him.”
He also stated that
the party cannot be
treated like a garbage
collection bin, indirect-
ly referring to Patel.
Implying that the join-
ing of any leader will
not make a difference
for the BJP in upcom-
ing Assembly polls,
Sanghani asserted,
“Even Naresh Patel (of
Khodaldham Trust) is
free to join any political
party. It is not going to
make any difference to
the BJP. People vote for
BJP and PM Narendra
Modi for the develop-
mental work done un-
der his leadership over
the last 22 years.”
For the past few days,
Patel has called out the
Congress’ state leader-
ship for being unable to
make decisions and cre-
ating hurdles for people
trying to work for the
party
. He has taken to
praising the BJP for
their “decision-making”
and even appreciating
action to build the Ram
Janmabhoomi Temple
in Ayodhya and also
scrappingof Section370.

was shocked to learn
from the amicus cu-
riae that industries
had taken to dispos-
ing effluents through
storm water pipe-
lines. Following the
revelation, the court
advised the
Ahmedabad Munici-
pal Corporation
(AMC) to put together
an action plan to rem-
edy the status quo.
“If the corporation
does not have a holis-
tic action plan in
place, all the work
done in the past year
will go down the
drain,” said the
bench.
The court was hear-
ing its suo motu peti-
tion on non-functional
Sewage Treatment
Plants (STPs) and dis-
charge of untreated ef-
fluents into the Sabar-
mati River. On Friday,
the amicus curiae (im-
partial advisor) ap-
pointed by the court
informed, “Out of 10
STPs, five are function-
ing effectively and
meeting the required
standards. But the re-
maining five are non-
functional or ineffec-
tive.”
Most of the CETPs
are not functioning ef-
fectively, and as the dis-
charge points are locat-
ed at very awkward
places, we cannot carry
out an inspection. The
situation is very bad be-
tween the Vasna Bar-
rage and Khambhat,
due to untreated efflu-
ents, he added.
R e c o m m e n d i n g
changes in the designs
of the ETP, CETP and
STP buildings, the ami-
cus curiae said, “There
is a need to conduct
groundwater testing as
it has been badly pol-
luted. A pre-monsoon
study of water pollu-
tion in the Sabarmati
River should also be pri-
oritized.”
During the hearing,
AMC submitted that
the stormwater drain-
age network in the city
was 970 kilometres,
with 97 outfalls into
the river. The court
has asked the civic
body to prepare a con-
crete plan to control
further damage to the
environment.

HIJAB ROW: FROM
KARNATAKA SCHOOL
PRESIDENTIAL POLL
IN FARAWAY FRANCE
ijab row is back to
haunt in Karnataka
with two Muslim stu-
dents who reached
their examination
centre in Udupi wearing burqas
being turned back from the cen-
tre. The Karnataka government
has banned hijab in classrooms.
The state high court upheld the
ban. The two class 12 students
wanted to write their exams
wearing burqas but when they
were denied permission, they
returned. However, other Mus-
lim students agreed to take off
the head scarf before entering
their class rooms.
Thousands of miles away in
France, the simple hijab may de-
cide the fate of far-right candi-
date Marie Le Pen who has
promised to ban the covering of
face by Muslim women in public
places.PresidentEmmanuelMa-
cron is against the ban. In their
televised debate before Sunday’s
vote, Macron told Le Pen that her
move will lead France to a “civil
war”. France has the largest
Muslim population in Western
Europe. Wearing of the Islamic
covering is already illegal in
French schools.
H
ndia couldn’t
have made its pro-
Russia stand
clearer than the
way it did at the
G20 meet on Wednesday
when Finance Minister Nir-
mala Sitharaman did not join
the western bloc in boycott-
ing Russian finance minister
Antony Siluanov’s virtual
address. At least 10 other who
stayed on during the Russian
leader’s speech despite the
US call for boycott included
Indonesia’s finance minister
Sri Mulyani Indrawati who
was chairing the session,
China, Brazil, South Africa
and Saudi Arabia. The boy-
cott led by US treasury secre-
tary Janet Yellen over inva-
sion of Ukraine was backed
by the UK, Canada, Germany
and France among others.
The vertical split in the
group on economic coopera-
tion indicated that the Amer-
ican effort to isolate Russia
over Ukraine only has the
backing of the western bloc,
Japan and UK. If the war
continues, the chasm will
present an awkward sight
when the G20 heads of state
meet at Bali in November.
With India and China on
its side, ousting Russia from
G20, as desired by US Presi-
dent Joe Biden, will be im-
possible. And that has creat-
ed another issue for the G20
Common Framework which
is meant to resolve the prob-
lem of debt incurred by na-
tions during the pandemic.
Debt restructuring of coun-
tries like Sri Lanka, which is
in a deep economic crisis,
may face hurdles. Colombo is
in talks with the IMF for a
bailout package but has been
bluntly told that its $51 bil-
lion loan was unsustainable
and required restructuring.
Lankan crisis is due to
poor management of the
economy and the pandemic.
It is for such situations that a
united G20 is needed.

Reads just like one of those
movies like ‘2012’, right? How-
ever, this is not fiction. As
Mumbai grapples with its un-
precedentedpopulationburst,
it has stood out as a severely
threatened city along the
western coast of India. Why?
The bulk of the coastal zones
around the financial capital
have witnessed the highest
amountof erosionasrevealed
after the Union Environment
Ministry presented stunning
statistics on ecological chal-
lenges impacting India’s
coastal regions before the Ra-
jya Sabha earlier this month.
TheNationalCentreforSus-

Chennai had undertaken

satellite data from the past 38
years, identifying locations
badly impacted by erosion. In
Mumbai, the coastline along
the Mahul village towards the
eastern suburbs shrunk by
146.16metres(themostforany

SHRINKING SPACES BY

Taking it a step further, in-
creased erosion puts infra-

much more so. According to a
study conducted by Noida-
based IT consulting firm

coastal cities in India, by 2050,
a large portion of the people,
property, and infrastructure
would be at risk of submer-

THE CRZ CONUNDRUM
The Coastal Regulation Zone
(CRZ) notice was issued by
the Ministry of Environment
and Forests in 1991 under the
Environmental Protection
Act, 1986, to regulate activi-
ties in India’s coastal zones.
The legislation has been re-
vised multiple times since
then, most recently with the
CRZ 2019 notification.
As highlighted by Mum-
bai-based group Conserva-
tion Action Trust, CZMP
maps for Mumbai city and
suburbs produced recently
failed to include all CRZ IA
categories, and there is no
distinction between man-
groves and mudflats.
RESTRICT CONSTRUCTION
IN MUMBAI’S
LOW-LYING AREAS
Low-lying locations, in com-
parison to high places, would
see a direct and immediate

research. Building in Mum-

THREE-PRONGED
APPROACH NEEDED
BEFORE ITS TOO LATE
In view of the increased sea-
level rise projections for 2050,
RMSI has proposed that the
Centre launch a project to cre-
ateanewshoreline,inundation
mapping, and disaster prepar-
edness throughout the whole
Indian coastline. All locations

est flood risk maps, and deter-
miningplinthlevels,basements,

This DSS will also help pre-
dict the dangers of heavy
rains and cyclones. In addi-
tion, all rivers and streams
should have their water levels
modelled, and locations at
risk of permanent submer-
gence marked. With this new
reality, inundation mapping
for Mumbai and other cities
in danger from increasing sea
levels becomes a top concern.

The Delhi High Court
Friday said student ac-
tivist Umar Khalid’s
speech at Amravati in
February 2020, which
forms a part of the
chargesheet against
him in the ‘larger con-
spiracy’ case of North-
east Delhi riots, was of-
fensive and obnoxious.
“This is offensive, ob-
noxious. Don’t you
think? These expres-
sions being used, don’t
you think they incite
people? You say things
like aapke purvaj angr-
ezon ki dalali kar rahe
the, you don’t think it is
offensive. It is offensive
per se. This is not the
first time that you said
so in this speech. You
said this at least five
times. It is almost as if
we distinctly get the im-
pression that it was
only one particular
community that fought
for India’s independ-
ence,” said the division
bench of Justice Sid-
dharth Mridul and Jus-
tice Rajnish Bhatnagar
after Khalid’s lawyers
read the contents of his
speech before the court.
The court made the
observation when the
counsel representing

New Delhi: There is go-
ing to be some upheaval
in the politics of Bihar.
Chief Minister Nitish

pressed his desire to go
to the Rajya Sabha and
then turned against it.
After that it is reported
that they are leaving the
official residence of

discussionhasalsostart-
ed that a BJP leader will
be seated in BIhar CMR
while Nitish Kumar will
go to Delhi. Earlier there
was talk of him becom-
ing the Vice President,
but BJP will hardly give
him this post. There is
talk of a veteran BJP
leader and Union Minis-
ter becoming the Vice
PresidentandNitishKu-
marcanjointhetopmin-
isters of the Centre in
his place. But this is also
speculation.
On the other hand,
the tone of BJP leaders
has started changing.
State President Sanjay
Jaiswal, who had been
targeting the Nitish Ku-
mar government till
now, has said that Nit-
ish Kumar will remain
our Chief Minister till
the next assembly elec-
tions. The state govern-
ment’s powerful minis-
ter Samrat Chaudhary,
who kept finding faults
in the functioning of
his government, also
said that there is no
question on the leader-
ship of Nitish Kumar.
Thusononesidethere
is discussion of Nitish

on the other hand, BJP
leaders are making
statements considering
him as a leader; which is
actually a contradictory
reality
. But there is also
the possibility of some
change from the contra-
diction. Keep in mind
thatinthebypollheldon

New Delhi: The Con-
gress party had given a
Rajya Sabha ticket to its
former president Ripun
Bora in Assam. It is a
different matter that
the party did not put
much emphasis to en-
sure his victory. The
Congress and ally AI-
UDF combined had 44
votes, while 43 votes
were needed to win the
seat. Despite this, Con-
gress candidate Ripun
Bora got only 35 votes
and lost. For this Bora
is blaming the party,
while in reality it was
also the lack of man-
agement since he too
could not unite the
votes. He had been the
state president and the
party had given him a
Rajya Sabha ticket, so it
was his responsibility
to win the seat. But he
lost the election and
within a week of his de-
feat left the party accus-
ing the party and went
to Trinamool Congress.
Just think, while giv-
ing him ticket in mid-
March, did the party
high command have no
idea that he is in touch
with Trinamool leaders
and he should not be
given tickets? He was in
touch with Sushmita
Deb, who left the party.
But Congress had no
idea. Similarly, Con-
gress did not get any
idea about RPN Singh.
The party made him a
star campaigner in the
Uttar Pradesh elections
and two days after the
release of the list of
star campaigners, he
joined the Bharatiya
Janata Party. It is the
lack of the organisa-
tion general secretary
of the Congress as well
as the state committee
and everyone in charge
that they do not know
anything about their
own leaders. If the top
leaders of the party
just keep their eyes and
ears open, then they
will know in time
which of their leaders
are soon going to ‘aban-
don ship’.

They were then seen
quietly leaving the

New Delhi: The lead-
ers of Trinamool Con-
gress and Telangana
Rashtra Samithi are
upset and complaining
over two issues. Word is
that some senior lead-
ers of Trinamool have
met Mamata Banerjee
and complained about
Prashant Kishor while
objecting to his meet-
ings with Congress
party leaders. Their
first complaint is that
when Prashant Kishor
has an agreement with
the Trinamool Con-
gress, hence how can he
talk to the Congress
party. Secondly, these
leaders have objected
as to how has he as-
sured the Congress that
he will bring harmony
in West Bengal without
talking to the Trina-
mool Congress.
In fact, Trinamool
Congress wants to fight
alone in West Bengal.
He knows that if the
card of Bengali identi-
ty is played by raising
the issue of making
Mamata Banerjee the
Prime Minister, the
party can win maxi-
mum seats. The party
leaders are also looking
at the possibility of
winning all the seats in
Gujarat like the BJP.
They feel that if there
is a campaign to make
the first Prime Minis-
ter from Bengal, Mamta
can win all the seats. In
such a situation, they
are displeased with
Prashant Kishor’s
claim of reconciliation.
However, Mamta has
not taken these com-
plaints seriously, yet.
She knows that her
agreement is not with
Prashant Kishor, but
with the Indian Politi-
cal Action Committee
(I-PAC). She also knows
that Prashant Kishor
has separated himself
from this company. So,
Trinamool Congress’s
deal with this company
is till 2026 elections but
technically not with
Prashant Kishor and
hence Kishor is free to
do his politics. Yes, she
too has raised an eye-
brow over Kishor’s
claim of coordination
with other parties.
On the other hand,
Prashant Kishor has
also had talks with Tel-
angana Rashtra
Samithi. Recently,
Kishor had gone to Hy-
derabad and he also
met Chief Minister
Chandrashekhar Rao.
Telangana Rashtra
Samithi leaders also
have the same problem
as the Trinamool and
are also not ready to
align with the Con-
gress. Congress leaders
of Telangana have also
objected to this. State
Congress President Re-
vanth Reddy has said
that Congress will fight
the elections on its own
and will make a come-
back.
So, the question is
how Prashant Kishor
will bring a cohesive
coordination between
the Congress and TRS
in Telangana and if he
does, will the BJP not
automatically become
the only opposition par-
ty. There is no confron-
tation in the rest of the
states regarding
Prashant Kishor. Be-
cause the Congress al-
ready has coordination
in the states like Tamil
Nadu, Maharashtra,
Jharkhand etc. But
there is a problem in
West Bengal and Telan-
gana.

India, UK call for ceasefire in Ukraine
Both sides discussed situation in Ukraine, underscoring importance of diplomacy and dialogue
New Delhi (AP): India
and Britain on Friday
called on Russia for an
immediate ceasefire in
Ukraine as British
Prime Minister Boris
Johnson announced
steps to help move New
Delhi away from its de-
pendence on Russia by
expanding economic
and defense ties.
Prime Minister Nar-
endra Modi said that
both sides discussed the
situation in Ukraine,
underscoring the im-
portance of dialogue to
settle issues.
“Both sides also
called for a free, open,
inclusive and rule-
based order in the Indo-
Pacific,’’ Modi said an
apparent reference to
China’s aggressiveness
in the region.
Johnson switched
over to Hindi language
to describe Modi as a
“Khaas-Dost,” or spe-
cial friend, and said,
“Our relations have
never been as strong or
as good between us as
they are now,’’
Johnson said Britain
will issue an Open Gen-
eral Export License to
India, reducing bureau-
cracy and shortening
delivery times for de-
fense procurement.
Johnson also an-
nounced $1.29 billion in
new investments and
export deals in areas
from software engineer-
ing and artificial intel-
ligence to health, creat-
ing almost 11,000 jobs
across the United King-
dom.

Hate speech case: SC
directs Delhi Police to
file ‘better affidavit’
New Delhi (PTI): The
Supreme Court on Fri-
day expressed its dis-
pleasure over a Delhi
Police affidavit which
said “no hate speech
was made” during an
event held here by a
right-wing outfit, and
wondered whether the
officer who filed the
document had applied
his mind or merely re-
produced the inquiry
report.
Posing searching
questions, the court
also directed the police
to file a “better affida-
vit” after which Addi-
tional Solicitor General
(ASG) KM Nataraj, ap-
pearing for the Delhi
Police, said they will
have a “re-look” of the
matter and file a fresh
affidavit.
The Delhi Police had
told the top court that
“no specific words
against any community
were uttered” at the
event organised by the
‘Hindu Yuva Vahini’ on
December 19 last.
“The affidavit has
been filed by the Deputy
Commissioner of Po-
lice. We hope he has un-
derstood the nuances.
Has he merely repro-
duced the inquiry re-
port or applied his
mind? Is it your stand

The bench ques-
tioned can such a stand

in their maiden season.
The Hardik Pandya-
led Gujarat Titans have
been firing on all cylin-
ders, with their batting
prowess and bowling
might.
Pandya pulled out of
their last match against
Chennai Super Kings
owing to a groin injury
but it was business as
usual for the Titans as
stand-in skipper Rashid
Khan led the team to a
three-wicket win over
the four-time champi-
ons.The biggest plus in
their win against CSK
was Rashid’s sensation-
al form with the bat as
he smashed a 21-ball 40
to help his team chase
down the target with a
ball spare.
GT’s opening combi-
nation may not have
given them the desired
start and most of the
times the middle-order
has rescued the Titans.
It was David Miller
(94 not out from 51 balls)
who anchored the show
against Chennai after
half the side were back
in the pavilion with 87
runs inside 13 overs.
According to Rashid,
Pandya’s injury was
“not serious and there’s
nothing to be worried
about”.
Pandya has been in
superlative form with
228 runs from five in-
nings at an average of
76.00.
The onus would be on
Kolkata’s bowlers to
seize the momentum
and stop the Titans’
three-match winning
run.
KKR’s pace attack led
by Pat Cummins and
Umesh Yadav and spin-
ner Varun Chakravar-
thy (30 runs from two
overs) were taken to
cleaners by the Ra-
jasthan Royals batters
in their last match.
It remains to be seen
if the team think-tank
would bring back Tim
Southee in the XI as the
key lies in getting early
breakthroughs and giv-
ing Sunil Narine a per-
fect stage to restrict the
flow of runs.
Narine, a vital cog in
KKR’s wheel for long,
has once again been
their go-to man and
boasts of the best econ-
omy rate of 5.03 after
seven matches.
The game also throws
an interesting match-up
between former KKR
batter Shubman Gill
and Narine.
Gill had a fine start to
the tournament and
scored 84 (vs Delhi) and
96 (vs Punjab) but has
gone quiet since then.

First India Bureau
Surat: The police in
Surat city on Friday
demolished an illegal
building once used as
a gambling den by a
dreaded criminal
who escaped from the
clutches of the police
after his men at-
tacked and injured
policemen earlier
this week, an official
said.
The two-storey struc-
ture near Sheetal cine-
ma in Rander was bull-
dozed amid police de-
ployment, inspector PL
Chaudhary of Rander
police station said.
The building was
used by Arif, who lives
in a Nehrunagar hut-
ment near Sheetal cin-
ema, and his brother
Sajju, who are dreaded
criminals.
While Sajju was ar-
rested recently, Arif,
who was evading the
police for some time in
a recent case of ob-
structing government
officials in Sachin
area, was caught by a
team from Rander po-
lice station on Tuesday
night, he said.
“However, when
Arif was being taken
to the police station,
he started shouting
and called his men to
help him escape. A
mob of around 30 men
charged towards the
policemen and helped
Arif escape after as-
saulting our staff,” the
official said.An FIR
has been registered in
this regard and teams
have been formed to
nab Arif and other ac-
cused, he added.
During investigation
about Arif’s activities,
Rander police learnt
about the illegal build-
ing, which was once
used as a gambling den.
The locals had also com-
plained about the build-
ing, Chaudhary said.
“When civic authori-
ties also confirmed
that the building was
illegal, we had called
in a bulldozer and
razed it to ensure that
it is not used for any il-
legal activity in the fu-
ture,” he added.

Cong’s Kailash Gadhvi,
NCP’s Kandhal Jadeja
planning to join BJP?
First India Bureau
Ahmedabad: With
Gujarat gearing up
for Assembly elec-
tions, political lead-
ers are fast metamor-
phosing into turn-
coats. On Friday,
Congress Spokesper-
son Kailash Gadhvi
hinted at his inten-
tions to quit the par-
ty and join another,
through social me-
dia. He also an-
nounced that he will
disclose his future
political plans with-
in a day or two.
Meanwhile, Nation-
alist Congress Party
(NCP) leader Kand-
hal Jadeja stated his
plan to join the
Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) on the
day
.
Sharing his griev-
ances, Gadhvi said,
“The (Congress) par-
ty does not value its
assets and is only
concerned with a few
leaders, who are
more focused on
their personal ambi-
tions than the party’s
future. Till the party
is in the hands of
such leaders, even
Prashant Kishor (po-
litical strategist) or
Naresh Patel (Khod-
aldham Trust
Patidar leader) can-
not lead Congress to
victory
.”
In another politi-
cal development,
NCP’s only incum-
bent MLA Kandhal
Jadeja is all set to
join the BJP and, if
sources are to be be-
lieved, contest 2022
elections on a BJP
ticket. Jadeja, who
has several murder,
extortion, assault
and arms cases to his
name, has won the
Kutiyana seat since
2012.
According to
sources in the BJP,
former Chief Minis-
ter Vijay Rupani
played a role in con-
vincing Kandhal to
join BJP. Interest-
ingly, he was spotted
accompanying cur-
rent CM Bhupendra
Patel during his re-
cent Saurashtra tour.
Having suffered three defeats in a row, the former
champs are in a tight spot so far this season
5 of family held for trying to ‘convert’ 2 tribal women
First India Bureau
Vyara: A couple and
their three sons were
arrested on Friday for
allegedly attempting to
convert two tribal wom-
en to Christianity in
Tapi district, police
said. Rakesh Vasava,
his wife Rekha, sons Yo-
han, Yakub and Rasin,
residents of Vyara
town, were booked un-
der IPC sections 342 (il-
legal confinement), 417
(punishment for cheat-
ing), 120b (criminal con-
spiracy) and under rel-
evant provisions of the
Gujarat Freedom of
Religion Act, 2003, in-
spector Hitendra Sinh
Gohil of the Vyara po-
lice station said.
The Act seeks to stop
religious conversions
by use of force or
through allurement.
“An FIR was regis-
tered on Thursday
night. The family fol-
lows Christianity and
has been accused of try-
ing to forcibly convert
two local tribal women
to their faith by per-
forming some rituals at
their house between
Wednesday and Thurs-
day,” Gohil said.
In her complaint, one
of the women, a 20-year-
old student of BCom,
claimed that she was in
a relationship with Yo-
han Vasava since the
last three years and
they live in the same
town and go to the same
college. As both fami-
lies knew about the re-
lationship, the com-
plainant and Yohan
Vasava used to visit
each other’s homes, the
FIR stated.
On Wednesday morn-
ing, Yohan Vasava
called the complainant
to his house claiming
that his father wanted
to meet her. However,
as soon as she reached
their house, Rakesh
Vasava allegedly forci-
bly cut off a sacred
thread from her wrist
and switched off her
mobile phone, it said.
“At the time, Rasin
Vasava’s girlfriend had
also arrived at the
Vasava residence. The
family members forci-
bly applied oil on the
legs and forehead of
both the girls and tied
their hair with a piece
of cloth,” the official
said.
Rakesh Vasava told
the girls that they are
“impure” and a ritual
will be performed to
“purify” them, Gohil
said, citing the FIR.
When the complain-
ant started crying and
urged them to let her go
home, Rakesh Vasava
told the women they
will have to stay here
for the next four days.
He also claimed that
“Jesus had deposited
Rs2 lakh” in his bank
account so that they can
buy mobile phones and
car, the official said.
Rakesh Vasava then
started a ritual after
lighting a candle and it
went on till 5 am on
Thursday, he said.
After reaching home,
the woman (the com-
plainant) narrated her
ordeal to family mem-
bers, following which a
complaint was lodged
against the Vasavas on
Thursday night, Gohil
said.

in the 18th Century, the
word Sheherwalis means
“City dwellers” A long
time ago, a community or
businessman from Ra-
jasthan migrated to the
(then) land of opportuni-
ties, Murshidabad. These
Rajasthani businessmen
called themselves “She-
herwalis” and worked
tirelessly to create their
empires in textile and
banking and went on to
become Zamindars. The
Sheherwalis, over gener-
ations, adapted to the
then prevalent cultural
influences in the region
namely, Mughal, British,
Bengali and European
and as such created their
own unique culture,
which was a melange of
all these global influences
The Sheherwalis settled
in the twin cities of Azim-
ganj Jiaganj and made
the towns famous for hav-
ing more wealth than the
combined wealth of the
(then) British aristocracy
.
The rich Jain merchant
families even financed
companies in France and
Britain and bankrolled
Nawabs in India.
LIFESTYLE
Migrated from one city to
the other, all these fami-
lies became close to each

new local environment in
terms of their food, val-
ues and practices. Ben-
gali and Nawabi influ-
ences are seen in their

the Sheherwall men wore

FOOD
Like the melange of cul-

Sheherwali cuisine is

huge wealth, the She-

their society and its peo-

many schools, temples,

many families devote
their time and effort
toward preserving
the region and its

City First
brings to you
information
about your
all-time
favourite ice
creams as
happiness
and ice
cream are
pretty much
the same
thing for all.
DHANUSHREE VYAS
cityfirst@firstindia.co.in
India’s traditional ice
creams are similar to
custard because they are
thick and very dense. These
ice creams take a longer
time to melt which makes
them perfect to serve
on a stick. The available
flavours are more on the
savoury side with options
such as saffron, cardamom,
pistachio, rabdi and rose etc.
As the name says soft-
serve is all about the
super-smooth texture. The
air is introduced into it and
thus the frozen ingredients
become very soft. These
are available in different
flavours and served in
cones dipped in chocolate
or rainbow sprinkles. It is
a delight for all ice cream
lovers.
KULFI SOFT SERVE
FALOODEH
These rolled-up strips of
ice cream are very popular
among people these days.
The process of making
this ice cream is as fun as
eating it. The ice cream
mixture is poured, chopped
and mixed with different
fruit flavours to create tasty
rolls. They are commonly
eaten as street food in
Thailand, Malaysia, and
Cambodia.
ROLLED
ICE CREAM
As the name suggests, snow ice cream
tastes like sweets from heaven. It is
a frozen giant cube of milk and water
which is shaved into very thin strips.
These strips are then topped with add
ons such as fresh fruits, sweetened
condensed milk, chocolate sprinkles.
Sorbet contains no dairy
products. It is all about fruits
so is rich in taste than regular
ice creams. At times alcohol is
added to the recipe to reduce
the freezing temperature to
create its soft and icy texture.
Dollops of ice cream are
wrapped in sweet and sticky
rice dough in Japan. These ice
creams are available in different
very healthy flavours such as
green tea, red bean, vanilla and
strawberry etc.
SNOW CREAM
SORBET
MOCHI
Italian gelato ice cream is denser as it contains a
higher volume of milk than cream. It’s churned at a
slower rate hence less air gets incorporated which
leads to the formation of ripples and imperfect
scoops. This contains very less eggs giving it a
wonderfully pure flavour.
Turkish ice creams are different in both
flavour as well the texture. It contains
salep flour and mastic which makes it
chewy. It is wonderfully malleable ice
cream. All it requires is constant churning
and pulling to attain the tasty and unique
texture.
It is an icy delight that
is a mix of sugar, water
and various flavourings
from fruit, nuts and herbs
such as strawberry,
almond and mint. Its super
texture makes it best for
consumption with a spoon
from a cup or bowl. They
are very popular among
health freaks.
GELATO
DONDURMA
GRANITA
This is fruit-based ice cream with a very
smooth texture that is produced just like
standard ice cream where the ingredients
are put at lower temperatures while mixing
them. No dairy product is used in the
making of this ice cream however, it might
contain eggs at times. The general flavours
include lemon, cherry, blue raspberry and
watermelon which are enjoyed by people of
all age groups.
ITALIAN ICE
A SURPRISE IN EVERY
A SURPRISE IN EVERY LICK!
LICK!
This ice cream hails from Iran and resembles
all-time favourite noodles. It is a blend of rose
water, sugar, cream and lime juice. These rice
noodles are a perfect frozen treat for all. This is
very popular among all the age groups.

This has not gone down well with a senior BJP lead- er. On Friday, without mentioning the Patidar leader’s name, he im- plied that the “BJP can- not be a garbage collec- tion bin.” Dileep Sanghani, a Leuva Patidar leader, who has been associat- ed with the party for more than four decades, is considered to be one of the close confidants of Prime Minister Nar- endra Modi. When the PM was deputed to Del- hi as the BJP general secretary, he stayed at Sanghani’s official MP residence. According to sources, Sanghani is unhappy with news that the Con- gress working presi- dent is planning to join the BJP. Addressing local me- dia persons on Friday, Sanghani said, “Hardik Patel is a betrayer. When he was with the Patidar Anamat An- dolan Samiti (PAAS), he hadstatedthathewould not join politics. But then, he joined the Con- gress party. Now that Congress is not giving him any importance, he is unhappy and is plan- ning to quit. He can go anywhere, but nobody is going to trust him.” He also stated that the party cannot be treated like a garbage collection bin, indirect- ly referring to Patel. Implying that the join- ing of any leader will not make a difference for the BJP in upcom- ing Assembly polls, Sanghani asserted, “Even Naresh Patel (of Khodaldham Trust) is free to join any political party. It is not going to make any difference to the BJP. People vote for BJP and PM Narendra Modi for the develop- mental work done un- der his leadership over the last 22 years.” For the past few days, Patel has called out the Congress’ state leader- ship for being unable to make decisions and cre- ating hurdles for people trying to work for the party . He has taken to praising the BJP for their “decision-making” and even appreciating action to build the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya and also scrappingof Section370. ‘BJP NOT A GARBAGE BIN FOR LEADERS LIKE HARDIK PATEL’ Dileep Sanghani with PM Narendra Modi. Due to the Katha, the police force was deputed there, and among them was Rapar police constable Varshaben Majiwabhai Parmar. As soon as she learnt about the old lady she ran 5 km with water for her. After waking her up and helping her drink water, Parmar then car- ried the old lady on her shoulder and walked. Following the revelation, the court advised the Ahmedabad Munici- pal Corporation (AMC) to put together an action plan to rem- edy the status quo. “If the corporation does not have a holis- tic action plan in place, all the work done in the past year will go down the drain,” said the bench. The court was hear- ing its suo motu peti- tion on non-functional Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and dis- charge of untreated ef- fluents into the Sabar- mati River. On Friday, the amicus curiae (im- partial advisor) ap- pointed by the court informed, “Out of 10 STPs, five are function- ing effectively and meeting the required standards. But the re- maining five are non- functional or ineffec- tive.” Most of the CETPs are not functioning ef- fectively, and as the dis- charge points are locat- ed at very awkward places, we cannot carry out an inspection. TOP TWEETS HIJAB ROW: FROM KARNATAKA SCHOOL PRESIDENTIAL POLL IN FARAWAY FRANCE ijab row is back to haunt in Karnataka with two Muslim stu- dents who reached their examination centre in Udupi wearing burqas being turned back from the cen- tre. The Karnataka government has banned hijab in classrooms. The state high court upheld the ban. The two class 12 students wanted to write their exams wearing burqas but when they were denied permission, they returned. However, other Mus- lim students agreed to take off the head scarf before entering their class rooms. Thousands of miles away in France, the simple hijab may de- cide the fate of far-right candi- date Marie Le Pen who has promised to ban the covering of face by Muslim women in public places.PresidentEmmanuelMa- cron is against the ban. In their televised debate before Sunday’s vote, Macron told Le Pen that her move will lead France to a “civil war”. France has the largest Muslim population in Western Europe. Wearing of the Islamic covering is already illegal in French schools. H ndia couldn’t have made its pro- Russia stand clearer than the way it did at the G20 meet on Wednesday when Finance Minister Nir- mala Sitharaman did not join the western bloc in boycott- ing Russian finance minister Antony Siluanov’s virtual address. At least 10 other who stayed on during the Russian leader’s speech despite the US call for boycott included Indonesia’s finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati who was chairing the session, China, Brazil, South Africa and Saudi Arabia. The boy- cott led by US treasury secre- tary Janet Yellen over inva- sion of Ukraine was backed by the UK, Canada, Germany and France among others. The vertical split in the group on economic coopera- tion indicated that the Amer- ican effort to isolate Russia over Ukraine only has the backing of the western bloc, Japan and UK. If the war continues, the chasm will present an awkward sight when the G20 heads of state meet at Bali in November. With India and China on its side, ousting Russia from G20, as desired by US Presi- dent Joe Biden, will be im- possible. And that has creat- ed another issue for the G20 Common Framework which is meant to resolve the prob- lem of debt incurred by na- tions during the pandemic. Debt restructuring of coun- tries like Sri Lanka, which is in a deep economic crisis, may face hurdles. Colombo is in talks with the IMF for a bailout package but has been bluntly told that its $51 bil- lion loan was unsustainable and required restructuring. Lankan crisis is due to poor management of the economy and the pandemic. It is for such situations that a united G20 is needed. RUSSIA’S ISOLATION AT G20 IS DIFFICULT If the war continues, the chasm will present an awkward sight when the G20 heads of state meet at Bali in November. With India China on its side, ousting Russia from G20, as desired by US Prez Joe Biden, will be impossible I RISING SEAS, VANISHING LANDS THREAT TO INDIA’S FINANCIAL CAPITAL EDGES CLOSER The Maharashtra Shoreline Management Plan (MSMP) 2017, a document that looked at the extent of coastal erosion, could be amended this year as per government sources to account for new changes (due to erosion) throughout the state’s 720-kilometre coastline The MSMP evaluates natural coastal processes, land use, and environmental details for coastal developments, and this time will include the direct effects of sea-level rise verthoughtaboutthatsinking feeling? Imagine this. You are lounging in your lavish home ontheMumbaiseaface,enjoy- ing the view of the sea on a monsoon morning. As you sit up and take notice of your beautiful morning turning intoanimminentlyfatalpaint- ing, thingsstartgettingworse. Reads just like one of those movies like ‘2012’, right? How- ever, this is not fiction. As Mumbai grapples with its un- precedentedpopulationburst, it has stood out as a severely threatened city along the western coast of India. Why? The bulk of the coastal zones around the financial capital have witnessed the highest amountof erosionasrevealed after the Union Environment Ministry presented stunning statistics on ecological chal- lenges impacting India’s coastal regions before the Ra- jya Sabha earlier this month. TheNationalCentreforSus- tainableCoastalManagement, Chennai had undertaken shorelinechangestudiesusing satellite data from the past 38 years, identifying locations badly impacted by erosion. In Mumbai, the coastline along the Mahul village towards the eastern suburbs shrunk by 146.16metres(themostforany location across Maharashtra). SHRINKING SPACES BY 2050 IN MUMBAI Taking it a step further, in- creased erosion puts infra- structure in jeopardy, and whenpairedwiththeprospect of risingsealevels, itbecomes much more so. According to a study conducted by Noida- based IT consulting firm RMSI (based on Intergovern- mental Panel on Climate Change reports) for six major coastal cities in India, by 2050, a large portion of the people, property, and infrastructure would be at risk of submer- sion due to rising sea levels. Risingsealevelsmaydrown portions of Mumbai’s essen- tial road and infrastructure by 2050, including parts of the Western Express Highway, the Bandra-Worli Sea-Link, andtheMumbaiCoastalRoad Phases I and II, which are cur- rently being developed. THE CRZ CONUNDRUM The Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) notice was issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forests in 1991 under the Environmental Protection Act, 1986, to regulate activi- ties in India’s coastal zones. The legislation has been re- vised multiple times since then, most recently with the CRZ 2019 notification. As highlighted by Mum- bai-based group Conserva- tion Action Trust, CZMP maps for Mumbai city and suburbs produced recently failed to include all CRZ IA categories, and there is no distinction between man- groves and mudflats. RESTRICT CONSTRUCTION IN MUMBAI’S LOW-LYING AREAS Low-lying locations, in com- parison to high places, would see a direct and immediate impact, according to RMSI’s research. Building in Mum- bai’s low-lying regions should besuspendedimmediately ,ac- cordingtotheMCAP ,launched inMarchthisyear, tolimitthe risk of erosion and sea-level rise. In addition, the plan, overthenexteightyears, calls for improving data monitor- ing and consistency to close gapsinlocalweatherforecast- ing and tidal changes for sea- levelrise,planningandimple- menting climate-proofing in- frastructure, and, most im- portantly, empowering vul- nerablecommunitiestobetter understand and integrate early warning systems. THREE-PRONGED APPROACH NEEDED BEFORE ITS TOO LATE In view of the increased sea- level rise projections for 2050, RMSI has proposed that the Centre launch a project to cre- ateanewshoreline, inundation mapping, and disaster prepar- edness throughout the whole Indian coastline. All locations to the left of the new coastline (towards the ocean), whether residential,industrial,orinfra- structural, mustbemovedonce the new coastline mapping is ready . This DSS will also help pre- dict the dangers of heavy rains and cyclones. In addi- tion, all rivers and streams should have their water levels modelled, and locations at risk of permanent submer- gence marked. With this new reality, inundation mapping for Mumbai and other cities in danger from increasing sea levels becomes a top concern. It is offensive per se. This is not the first time that you said so in this speech. You said this at least five times. It is almost as if we distinctly get the im- pression that it was only one particular community that fought for India’s independ- ence,” said the division bench of Justice Sid- dharth Mridul and Jus- tice Rajnish Bhatnagar after Khalid’s lawyers read the contents of his speech before the court. The court made the observation when the counsel representing Khalid was reading the portion where he is re- ported to have said Ma- hatma Gandhi had launchedanon-coopera- tion movement against the British in 1920, and Jamia Millia Islamia University was one of the first educational in- stitutestobeestablished after Gandhi’s call. Mahesh Sharma New Delhi: There is go- ing to be some upheaval in the politics of Bihar. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar recently ex- pressed his desire to go to the Rajya Sabha and then turned against it. After that it is reported that they are leaving the official residence of Chief Minister and go- ing to a bungalow at Seven, Circular Road. It isbeingsaidthatrenova- tion work is going on at CMR. Meanwhile, the discussionhasalsostart- ed that a BJP leader will be seated in BIhar CMR while Nitish Kumar will go to Delhi. Earlier there was talk of him becom- ing the Vice President, but BJP will hardly give him this post. There is talk of a veteran BJP leader and Union Minis- ter becoming the Vice PresidentandNitishKu- marcanjointhetopmin- isters of the Centre in his place. But this is also speculation. On the other hand, the tone of BJP leaders has started changing. State President Sanjay Jaiswal, who had been targeting the Nitish Ku- mar government till now, has said that Nit- ish Kumar will remain our Chief Minister till the next assembly elec- tions. The state govern- ment’s powerful minis- ter Samrat Chaudhary, who kept finding faults in the functioning of his government, also said that there is no question on the leader- ship of Nitish Kumar. Thusononesidethere is discussion of Nitish moving to Delhi while on the other hand, BJP leaders are making statements considering him as a leader; which is actually a contradictory reality . But there is also the possibility of some change from the contra- diction. Keep in mind thatinthebypollheldon one seat recently, when BJP lost, Nitish Kumar had said that the public is the mightiest, which, accordingtopoliticalob- servers, may be a silent threat to those challeng- ing Nitish’s authority . Sharat K Verma New Delhi: The Con- gress party had given a Rajya Sabha ticket to its former president Ripun Bora in Assam. It is a different matter that the party did not put much emphasis to en- sure his victory. The Congress and ally AI- UDF combined had 44 votes, while 43 votes were needed to win the seat. Despite this, Con- gress candidate Ripun Bora got only 35 votes and lost. For this Bora is blaming the party, while in reality it was also the lack of man- agement since he too could not unite the votes. He had been the state president and the party had given him a Rajya Sabha ticket, so it was his responsibility to win the seat. But he lost the election and within a week of his de- feat left the party accus- ing the party and went to Trinamool Congress. Just think, while giv- ing him ticket in mid- March, did the party high command have no idea that he is in touch with Trinamool leaders and he should not be given tickets? He was in touch with Sushmita Deb, who left the party. But Congress had no idea. Similarly, Con- gress did not get any idea about RPN Singh. The party made him a star campaigner in the Uttar Pradesh elections and two days after the release of the list of star campaigners, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. It is the lack of the organisa- tion general secretary of the Congress as well as the state committee and everyone in charge that they do not know anything about their own leaders. If the top leaders of the party just keep their eyes and ears open, then they will know in time which of their leaders are soon going to ‘aban- don ship’. K’taka: 2 Hijab-clad students denied entry to exam centre Udupi (PTI):In another dramatic development in the Karnataka Hijab ban row, the two stu- dents who had first peti- tioned the court to allow Hijab inside classrooms were on Friday turned away from the examina- tion centre of their final class 12 board examina- tion after they insisted on taking the exams wearing burqas. Aliya Assadi and Re- shamhadcollectedtheir hall tickets and turned up donning burqas to take the exams at the VidyodayaPUCollegein Udupi. They tried to convince the invigila- tors and the college principal for around 45 minutes but were even- tually not allowed any exception to the court order upholding the state government’s ban. They were then seen quietly leaving the premises without tak- ing the exams. The principal of Vidy- odaya college which was the designated examina- tion centre blamed it on the girls. “We are following the rule. Our exam in- vigilator tried convinc- ing them but they re- fused to budge. They clearly had no inten- tion of giving their ex- ams. They just wanted to create an issue,” col- lege Principal Sandeep Kumar said. The first paper was Business Studies. The exams will be held at 1,076 centres across the state amid tight security with cops deployed at various centres to ensure there are no untoward inci- dents with regard to students following the dress code. The state Education Minister BC Nagesh has categorically said that students won’t be allowed to take their ex- ams in the hijab. This comes in the wake of many Muslim female students requesting the Minister to allow them to wear their hijabs during the final exams. Bengaluru (Agencies): The Karnataka government is all set to strictly implement the law in connection with Azaan. The move is likely to add to the existing social unrest in the state. Karnataka Chief Minis- ter Basavaraj Bommai and the state DG and IGP Praveen Sood made it clear on Friday that everyone should follow the law in this regard. Meanwhile, Sri Ram Sena founder Pramod Muthalik has stated that he has launched a “Azaan se Azadi” campaign in the state. He had demanded that the government should ensure implementation of the law on viola- tion of rules while performing Azaan in mosques. Patna (Agencies): The Iftar party , hosted by the RJD at the offi- cial residence of for- mer Chief Minister Rabri Devi on Friday, attracted attention of every political party in the state. Chief Minister Nit- ish Kumar, accepting the invitation sent to him by Rabri Devi, and her sons Tejashwi Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav, walked from his 7 Circular Road bungalow to her 10 Circular Road resi- dence – a mere bunga- low away . He was seen meet- ing Rabri Devi and Tejashwi Yadav. Nitish Kumar’s meeting with Tejash- wi Yadav has a big message for BJP top leadership – coming it is a day before Un- ion Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to the state. INDIA AHMEDABAD | SATURDAY, APRIL 23, 2022 06 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epapers/ahmedabad I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia Moni Sharma New Delhi: The lead- ers of Trinamool Con- gress and Telangana Rashtra Samithi are upset and complaining over two issues. Word is that some senior lead- ers of Trinamool have met Mamata Banerjee and complained about Prashant Kishor while objecting to his meet- ings with Congress party leaders. Their first complaint is that when Prashant Kishor has an agreement with the Trinamool Con- gress, hence how can he talk to the Congress party. Secondly, these leaders have objected as to how has he as- sured the Congress that he will bring harmony in West Bengal without talking to the Trina- mool Congress. In fact, Trinamool Congress wants to fight alone in West Bengal. He knows that if the card of Bengali identi- ty is played by raising the issue of making Mamata Banerjee the Prime Minister, the party can win maxi- mum seats. The party leaders are also looking at the possibility of winning all the seats in Gujarat like the BJP. They feel that if there is a campaign to make the first Prime Minis- ter from Bengal, Mamta can win all the seats. In such a situation, they are displeased with Prashant Kishor’s claim of reconciliation. However, Mamta has not taken these com- plaints seriously, yet. She knows that her agreement is not with Prashant Kishor, but with the Indian Politi- cal Action Committee (I-PAC). She also knows that Prashant Kishor has separated himself from this company. So, Trinamool Congress’s deal with this company is till 2026 elections but technically not with Prashant Kishor and hence Kishor is free to do his politics. Yes, she too has raised an eye- brow over Kishor’s claim of coordination with other parties. On the other hand, Prashant Kishor has also had talks with Tel- angana Rashtra Samithi. Recently, Kishor had gone to Hy- derabad and he also met Chief Minister Chandrashekhar Rao. Telangana Rashtra Samithi leaders also have the same problem as the Trinamool and are also not ready to align with the Con- gress. Congress leaders of Telangana have also objected to this. State Congress President Re- vanth Reddy has said that Congress will fight the elections on its own and will make a come- back. So, the question is how Prashant Kishor will bring a cohesive coordination between the Congress and TRS in Telangana and if he does, will the BJP not automatically become the only opposition par- ty. There is no confron- tation in the rest of the states regarding Prashant Kishor. Be- cause the Congress al- ready has coordination in the states like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Jharkhand etc. But there is a problem in West Bengal and Telan- gana. Prime Minister Nar- endra Modi said that both sides discussed the situation in Ukraine, underscoring the im- portance of dialogue to settle issues. “Both sides also called for a free, open, inclusive and rule- based order in the Indo- Pacific,’’ Modi said an apparent reference to China’s aggressiveness in the region. Johnson switched over to Hindi language to describe Modi as a “Khaas-Dost,” or spe- cial friend, and said, “Our relations have never been as strong or as good between us as they are now,’’ Johnson said Britain will issue an Open Gen- eral Export License to India, reducing bureau- cracy and shortening delivery times for de- fense procurement. Johnson also an- nounced $1.29 billion in new investments and export deals in areas from software engineer- ing and artificial intel- ligence to health, creat- ing almost 11,000 jobs across the United King- dom. China wasn’t helping the situation in Ukraine by doing things like amplifying Russian disinformation cam- paigns, US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said at an event in Brussels. She said she hoped Beijing will learn the “right lessons” from Rus- sia’s war, including that it can’t separate US from its allies. BRITAIN SETS UP TASK FORCE AGAINST PRO-KHALISTAN, OTHER EXTREME GROUPS New Delhi (ANI): EAM S Jaishankar on Friday called on British PM Boris Johnson here and discussed bilateral ties and implementation of the India-UK Roadmap 2030. “Delighted to call on UK PM @BorisJohn- son during his India visit. New Delhi (ANI): Pro- Khalistan and other extremist groups in the UK may face heat in the coming days. British PM Boris Johnson, during his visit to India, an- nounced that the UK has set up Anti-Extremist Task Force. “We have a very strong view that we don’t tolerate extremist groups threatening other countries, threatening India. We’ve set up an Anti-Extremist Task Force,” Boris Johnson said. Pro-Khalistan groups have time and again resorted to violent protests outside the High Commission of In- dia. India has not explicitly condemned the invasion by Russia, its biggest supplier of military hardware. Hate speech case: SC directs Delhi Police to file ‘better affidavit’ New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court on Fri- day expressed its dis- pleasure over a Delhi Police affidavit which said “no hate speech was made” during an event held here by a right-wing outfit, and wondered whether the officer who filed the document had applied his mind or merely re- produced the inquiry report. Posing searching questions, the court also directed the police to file a “better affida- vit” after which Addi- tional Solicitor General (ASG) KM Nataraj, ap- pearing for the Delhi Police, said they will have a “re-look” of the matter and file a fresh affidavit. The Delhi Police had told the top court that “no specific words against any community were uttered” at the event organised by the ‘Hindu Yuva Vahini’ on December 19 last. “The affidavit has been filed by the Deputy Commissioner of Po- lice. We hope he has un- derstood the nuances. Has he merely repro- duced the inquiry re- port or applied his mind? Is it your stand as well or the reproduc- tion of inquiry report of sub-inspector level officer?” a bench of Jus- tices AM Khanwilkar and Abhay S Oka asked. The bench ques- tioned can such a stand be taken on an affidavit before the court and wanted to know who verified the affidavit. Once we learn to focus on what is most significant and important, we gain impact in relationships and all tasks. —Jagdeesh Chandra, CEO Editor-in-Chief, First India AHMEDABAD | SATURDAY, APRIL 23, 2022 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epapers/ahmedabad I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia 08 2NDFRONT First India Bureau Navi Mumbai: Former champions Kolkata Knight Riders will be desperate to bring their flagging campaign back on track when they face leaders Gujarat Titans in the IPL here on Sat- urday. Having suffered three defeats in a row, the Shreyas Iyer-led outfit has slipped to sev- enth in the table and the task gets tougher against the Titans, who have been a revelation in their maiden season. The Hardik Pandya- led Gujarat Titans have been firing on all cylin- ders, with their batting prowess and bowling might. Pandya pulled out of their last match against Chennai Super Kings owing to a groin injury but it was business as usual for the Titans as stand-in skipper Rashid Khan led the team to a three-wicket win over the four-time champi- ons.The biggest plus in their win against CSK was Rashid’s sensation- al form with the bat as he smashed a 21-ball 40 to help his team chase down the target with a ball spare. GT’s opening combi- nation may not have given them the desired start and most of the times the middle-order has rescued the Titans. It was David Miller (94 not out from 51 balls) who anchored the show against Chennai after half the side were back in the pavilion with 87 runs inside 13 overs. According to Rashid, Pandya’s injury was “not serious and there’s nothing to be worried about”. Pandya has been in superlative form with 228 runs from five in- nings at an average of 76.00. The onus would be on Kolkata’s bowlers to seize the momentum and stop the Titans’ three-match winning run. KKR’s pace attack led by Pat Cummins and Umesh Yadav and spin- ner Varun Chakravar- thy (30 runs from two overs) were taken to cleaners by the Ra- jasthan Royals batters in their last match. It remains to be seen if the team think-tank would bring back Tim Southee in the XI as the key lies in getting early breakthroughs and giv- ing Sunil Narine a per- fect stage to restrict the flow of runs. Narine, a vital cog in KKR’s wheel for long, has once again been their go-to man and boasts of the best econ- omy rate of 5.03 after seven matches. The game also throws an interesting match-up between former KKR batter Shubman Gill and Narine. Gill had a fine start to the tournament and scored 84 (vs Delhi) and 96 (vs Punjab) but has gone quiet since then. The two-storey struc- ture near Sheetal cine- ma in Rander was bull- dozed amid police de- ployment, inspector PL Chaudhary of Rander police station said. The building was used by Arif, who lives in a Nehrunagar hut- ment near Sheetal cin- ema, and his brother Sajju, who are dreaded criminals. While Sajju was ar- rested recently, Arif, who was evading the police for some time in a recent case of ob- structing government officials in Sachin area, was caught by a team from Rander po- lice station on Tuesday night, he said. “However, when Arif was being taken to the police station, he started shouting and called his men to help him escape. A mob of around 30 men charged towards the policemen and helped Arif escape after as- saulting our staff,” the official said.An FIR has been registered in this regard and teams have been formed to nab Arif and other ac- cused, he added. During investigation about Arif’s activities, Rander police learnt about the illegal build- ing, which was once used as a gambling den. The locals had also com- plained about the build- ing, Chaudhary said. “When civic authori- ties also confirmed that the building was illegal, we had called in a bulldozer and razed it to ensure that it is not used for any il- legal activity in the fu- ture,” he added. On Friday, Congress Spokesper- son Kailash Gadhvi hinted at his inten- tions to quit the par- ty and join another, through social me- dia. He also an- nounced that he will disclose his future political plans with- in a day or two. Meanwhile, Nation- alist Congress Party (NCP) leader Kand- hal Jadeja stated his plan to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the day . Sharing his griev- ances, Gadhvi said, “The (Congress) par- ty does not value its assets and is only concerned with a few leaders, who are more focused on their personal ambi- tions than the party’s future. Till the party is in the hands of such leaders, even Prashant Kishor (po- litical strategist) or Naresh Patel (Khod- aldham Trust Patidar leader) can- not lead Congress to victory .” In another politi- cal development, NCP’s only incum- bent MLA Kandhal Jadeja is all set to join the BJP and, if sources are to be be- lieved, contest 2022 elections on a BJP ticket. Jadeja, who has several murder, extortion, assault and arms cases to his name, has won the Kutiyana seat since 2012. According to sources in the BJP, former Chief Minis- ter Vijay Rupani played a role in con- vincing Kandhal to join BJP. The Act seeks to stop religious conversions by use of force or through allurement. “An FIR was regis- tered on Thursday night. The family fol- lows Christianity and has been accused of try- ing to forcibly convert two local tribal women to their faith by per- forming some rituals at their house between Wednesday and Thurs- day,” Gohil said. In her complaint, one of the women, a 20-year- old student of BCom, claimed that she was in a relationship with Yo- han Vasava since the last three years and they live in the same town and go to the same college. As both fami- lies knew about the re- lationship, the com- plainant and Yohan Vasava used to visit each other’s homes, the FIR stated. On Wednesday morn- ing, Yohan Vasava called the complainant to his house claiming that his father wanted to meet her. However, as soon as she reached their house, Rakesh Vasava allegedly forci- bly cut off a sacred thread from her wrist and switched off her mobile phone, it said. “At the time, Rasin Vasava’s girlfriend had also arrived at the Vasava residence. The family members forci- bly applied oil on the legs and forehead of both the girls and tied their hair with a piece of cloth,” the official said. Rakesh Vasava told the girls that they are “impure” and a ritual will be performed to “purify” them, Gohil said, citing the FIR. When the complain- ant started crying and urged them to let her go home, Rakesh Vasava told the women they will have to stay here for the next four days. He also claimed that “Jesus had deposited Rs2 lakh” in his bank account so that they can buy mobile phones and car, the official said. Rakesh Vasava then started a ritual after lighting a candle and it went on till 5 am on Thursday, he said. After reaching home, the woman (the com- plainant) narrated her ordeal to family mem- bers, following which a complaint was lodged against the Vasavas on Thursday night, Gohil said.
