2. Introduction:
1.The Self inflating tires are designed to inflate
or deflate tires automatically.
2.Tires need more air while driving on hard
surfaces at high Speed and less air for
driving on soft surfaces such as soil or sand.
3.The driver of The vehicle will Select an
appropriate tire pressure from inside the
vehicle
3. Why is it needed?
1. During a survey most of the accident are due to
uneven inflation of tires.
2. 78% of India rides on incorrect tire pressure? In this
survey, Almost 44% of the car tire were over
inflated and 34% Over-inflated tire decrease the
efficiency and are prone to burst at high speed
resulting in collision.
3. Under-inflated or deflated tire has vehicle handling,
leading to accident due to lack of control.
4. Basic Review-
Tires-inflation systems Job:
1. Detect when the air pressure in a Particular tire has
dropped.
2. Notify the driver of the problem.
3. Inflate that tire back to the proper Level.
5. Types of self inflating tire system-
1.CTIS (Central Tire Inflation System )
2.TMS (Tire Maintenance System )
3.AIRGO System.
6. Common Elements of Inflation System-
1. They use valve to isolate individual Tires to
prevent airflow.
2. They have a method for sensing the Tire
pressures..
3. They have an air source.
4. There's a way to get the air from the air
source to the Tires..
5. There's a pressure relief vent to Vent air
from the tire.
7. CTIS’s Primary Functions
1. A wheel valve is present which isolate the Tire from
the system when it's not in use.
2. An electronic control unit (ECU), the brain of the
system is mounted behind the passenger seat.
3. An operator control panel let customize tire pressure
model.
4. CTIS includes a speed sensor provide Information
about current speed & in turn. CTIS maintain the
optimum tire pressure.
5. CTIS gives priority to the brakes since the Brakes &
the tire share air from the same Compressor.
8. CTIS an inside look
Parts-
1.A wheel valve
2. Electronic control unit
3. Pneumatic control
unit
4. Operator control
panel
5. Speed sensor
6. Pressure switch

Tractor
11. Wheel Valve
1. A wheel valve is located at each wheel end.
2. Part of the wheel valve's job is to isolate the tire from the
system when it's not in use in order to let the pressure off of the
seal and extend its life.
3. The wheel valve also enables on-demand inflation and
deflation of the tires.
Electronic Control Unit (ECU)
1. An electronic control unit (ECU) mounted behind the
passenger seat is the brain of the system.
2. It processes driver commands, monitors all signals through
out the system and tells the system to check tire pressures
every 10 minutes.
12. The Pneumatic control Unit
1. The ECU sends commands to the pneumatic control unit, which
directly controls the wheel valves and air system.
2. The pneumatic control unit also contains a sensor that transmits
tire pressure readings to ECU.
Operator control panel
1. An operator control panel allows the driver to select tire-pressure
modes to match current conditions.
2. This dash-mounted panel displays current tire pressures, selected
modes and system status.
3. When the driver selects a tire-pressure setting, signals from the
control panel travel to the electronic control unit and from there it
goes to the pneumatic control unit and finally reaches the wheel
valves.
13. Speed Sensor
1. The CTIS includes a speed sensor that sends vehicle speed
information to the electronic control unit.
2. If the vehicle continues moving at a higher speed for a set
period of times, the system automatically inflates the tires to
an appropriate pressure for that speed.
Pressure Switch
1. This type of system uses air from the same compressor that
supplies air to the brakes.
2. A pressure switch makes sure the brake system gets priority,
preventing the CTIS from taking air from the supply tank
until the brake system is fully charged.
14. How It Works?
1. The electronic control unit tells the pneumatic control unit to
check current pressure and either inflate or deflate the tire to
the pressure selected by the driver.
2. If the system determines that inflation is needed, it first checks
to make sure that brake pressure reserves are where they
should be
3. If they are, it applies a slight pressure to the wheel valve to
allow inflation.
4. If the tires are over inflated, the system applies a slight
vacuum to the wheel valve.
5. When the pneumatic control unit reads that the appropriate
pressure is reached, the valve closes.
16. AIRGO System
The overall system is made
up of a wheel-end assembly
and a control module
Parts-
1. Air tank
2. Pressure Protection Valve
3. Shut-off valve
4. Filter
5. Control Box
6. Air-supply line
17. Wheel End Assembly of AIRGO
system
The wheel-end assembly includes-
1. A flexible hose with check valves.
2. The check valves only allow air to
flow into each tire and ensure that
while one tire is being inflated, the
other tires doesn’t lose air
pressure.
3. A stator (a non-rotating part) inside
the axle spindle
4. A flow-through tee that is attached
to the hubcap.
5. A deflector shield keeps
contaminants such as dirt and
water from entering the wheel end
18. Working of AIRGO system-
1. When a tire loses pressure, due to a puncture or other
seepage, a series of check valves automatically
detects it.
2. The System then immediately draws air from the
vehicle’s pneumatic system and directs it to each tire
requiring air.
3. The air pressure is delivered via the trailer’s hollow
axle housing.
4. The air then goes through the hub assembly and into
the tires. It is completely isolated from the brake
system
19. Merits of Self Inflating Tire system-
1. Longer tire life
2. Reduced fuel consumption
3. Protection against soil compaction
4. Increased driving stability
5. Enhanced productivity for field work
6. Improved pulling performance
7. Convenient push-button operation.
20. Demerits-
1. Too many components.
2. More costly than the conventional Tires.
3. Requires more maintenance.
4. Heavier than general vehicle.
5. The user must have the basic knowledge about
how to relate between the Pressure and the
road condition.
21. Conclusion-
Self inflating tires are going to be used in
the bicycles, motorcycles along with the
four or more wheelers through out the
world and an era will definitely come soon
when there will be only self inflating tires
in practice.
