Editor's Notes
This chart shows 7 categories of waste. It is a standard used all over the world. 1st : Over production -> producing more that the customer needs…it is in bold because it is the worst kind of waste. Why….because it is a management decision and because it gives birth to all the other categories of waste 2nd : Waiting or idle time -> operator waiting at the line, waiting for associates, small trains or for parts from warehouse ... 3rd : Bad quality or scrap 4th : Useless operations -> pulling a part out of a bag and then putting it in a box…double handling. 5th : Transportation -> Moving parts around the plant 6th : Movement -> excess bending, reaching, walking … at workstations . 7th : Inventories -> Stock in warehouse, stock on train, stock on lineside racks, wip in the line... It is important to understand this different categories of waste because... The way we reduce transportation waste is different to the way we reduce a scrap problem or the way to reduce useless operations at a workstation. At the plant we need to look with our eyes at movement. We should not have parts waiting or moving. We should not have people waiting or moving…..THIS IS THE TARGET .
