1. Question 2 –
How does your media
product represent particular
social groups?
ETHAN WALKER
2. The reader and social group
The typical readers are
predominantly male, young adults
In a medium-higher education (18-
32). This would also represent their
intellect of having an above
average intelligence. They would
also be on a reasonable income.
They would live in urban areas such as
large cities like London or Paris. They
would be very interested in Rock, Indie
and Alternative music and be up to
date in all the latest trends. They would
usually live with a partner of even have
a family.
The person would usually be
very sociable and friendly. They
would enjoy meeting up with
people of similar interests. For
fun they would go to concerts,
cafés and social meetings. They
are also very creative people.
The individuals attire are
usually a smart/casual
dress sense. They follow
the latest trends of
fashion. They like
designer brands and
often wear black and red.
The demographic for my Dynamix magazine are most
likely to fall into the social class of ‘New Affluent
Workers’. This class has medium levels of economic
capital and higher levels of cultural and social. They are
a young and active group.
3. Front Cover Implications
Before producing my final product, I
carried out an Audience profile and
wanted to ensure that the connotations
of the demographic were portrayed
throughout making my Dynamix
Magazine. I feel I successfully inferred
these aspects and continuously
included them within my front cover,
contents page and double page spread.
Appearance kept casual and tidy,
not much effort is put in but there is
a creative feel to it. This represents
the personality of the reader
Strong, Confident individual who
aspires the demographic. The
feature article image resembles the
demographic and how they will
succeed in their career. The rock
star on the front cover, allows these
readers to strive to be like him
The masthead Dynamix implies the authentic
music relation between the magazine and the
Rock genre. Music lovers will appreciate the
play on words of the title of the magazine.
Dynamix is also a strong, masculine word
which can be related to the audience.
The rock star looks young and
confident. He is perceived as a
friendly character who is
definitely connected to the
music world.
The minimalistic attire and messy hair says they don’t
put much effort into looking good and are more
concerned about music.
The black, red and grey colour
scheme that is used represents
the classic feel of traditional rock
magazines.
4. Contents Page Implications
The contents used is very
similar to the front cover in
terms of the colour used and
the professionality of it all.
Everything has its own
section making the contents
page really clean looking
which can be related to the
audience
In the images the people
used are in dark, bland
colours and all look like rock
stars which allows the
audience to aspire to be like
them. They are also
predominantly male which
represents the audience.
I have tried to keep the brand
identity throughout the
magazine pages by using the
same colours and fonts which
you can see, this can be linked to
the loyalty of the magazine and
its users.
The different sections show well
ranged the magazine is, and also
the intellectuality of the magazine
and its readers. There is a little bit
of definition allowing for the
readers to understand but also
enough so they will be curious
enough to find out more. The vast
amount of page numbers suggest
the amount of high quality
information.
5. Double-Page Spread Implications
“The rock god is back” is the
cover line which allows the
readers to have their eyes
caught by this and want to find
out more.
The name of the rock star takes up a
large section of the page which
showcases the importance of the
person which adds to making the
audience want to aspire be as
important as him
Again, we can see the
brand identity is kept
throughout the
magazines by the use of
colours and
professionality of it, we
can also see the same
masthead being used
from the front cover on
the page.
The feature article image
shows the rock star on the
floor which shows he isn’t
above himself and he can
actually be down to earth
which encourages the
audience to like him. He is
staring at the reader which
shows his friendliness and
also he is holding a guitar
which showcases his
relationship with music.
The font used is very neat
and professional much like
the layout of the page.
There seems to be a lot of
information on the page
which represents the
intellectuality of Dynamix’s
readers.
