1. Looking at other rock magazine front covers I realised that three main colours were used
often these colours were red, white and black; this can especially be seen in classic rock
magazine. I thought theses colours conveyed the rock genre well as it created a strong feel
as expected by rock music, the colours are on the darker side to show that this is more for
the older audience and not suitable for younger people, the red writing conveys energy
while the black writing conveys a serious story. I have also decided to change the image to
black and white; this can be seen many different magazine covers to create a retro and rock
feel. The image used creates a rock feel as the pose used clearly conveys rock especially
with the hand gestures as well as the blonde stripe in his hair which creates an unusual look,
this works well for a rock magazine as rock artists usually come across as rebellious and
different, the clothes worn by the person on the cover portrays a rock star well as it seems
rebellious. To improve the cover page I would add more cover lines around the work in that
way their wouldn’t be any negative space and the magazine altogether would look nicer if
there would be more cover lines. There are also smaller problems with the way the cover
lines are presented, the cover line which states “Plectrum RIP Wayne Kramer on Mattao
Percuadari” is written in white, because of this the text is hard to see and doesn’t stand out.
The writing which states “from 1979 and still going strong” is written in italic which is hard
to read because of the small size and it’s written in white making it harder to see. The image
could use some props to make it seemmore like a rock magazine.
The heading
The master heading used my contents page is similar to that of classic rock magazine, the
font seen of old school rap, this font is seen in classic rock magazines contents page, the
same colour is used as well as the lines under, there are also lines next to the name which
goes across the page, these features can create a really nice and retro look, this style
matches a similar design. The image Is placed in a similar place as seen in other rock
magazine cover pages, this is on the left side of the page, this design is most predominantly
seen in magazines such as classic rock and NME. Similar to the other rock magazines
contents page I have decided to have a plain back ground, I have done this as I feel that it’s
the best way to capture the person the best and the way that they act and seem, behind the
person the background is blank rather than having scenery as you would usually see in
contents page such as a wall or a flag, I have decided to use the gradient tool to mix the grey
with white as I want the main focus to be on the image rather than the background. I have
decided to use the same colour scheme as seen in the cover page as well as the double page
spread as I feel the combination of red white and black is often associated with rock music,
red is seen the least on the page but it’s used in the right moments such as all the numbers
on the page as boxes and stickers, black is used in most of the writing while white is used for
the background and a bit of writing too, the way the colours are used is similar to other
magazines such as Q magazine, NME and classic rock magazine.
The double page spread
2. The quote used for the double page spread says “Many Heavy Hearts And Bloody Fingers”,
this quote is a type of quote you would often find said by rock artists as they are known for
saying weird and confusing lines which you would expect in a rock magazine pull quote as its
confusing and would make the audience want to read more through curiosity. The font
given to the pull quote is reminiscent of font used for more grunge and heavy rock while
mine is more indigo rock, I have decided to go for a more grunge looking quote as seen by
artists such as nirvana and AC/DC, the placement of the pull quote is similar to other
magazines as its played in the same place and both lines are slightly slanted which creates a
crazy look often associated with rock. The image is placed in a similar place as seen in a lot
of magazines, the image is of the subject in action so hes doing something rather than
sitting still and posing
