Community water systems obtain water from two sources: surface water and ground water. People use surface and ground water every day for a variety of purposes, including drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene, in addition to recreational, agricultural, and industrial activities
Surface water is water that collects on the ground or in a stream, river, lake, reservoir, or ocean. It is located on top of the earth’s surface. Surface water is constantly replenished through precipitation, and lost through evaporation and seepage into ground water supplies.
Surface water serves many purposes. The main uses of surface water include drinking-water and other public uses, irrigation uses, and for use by the thermoelectric-power industry to cool electricity-generating equipment.

Quarter 4– Competency 2- Week 2 (SY 2020-2021)
Name: _________________________ Section:_________Date: _______
I. Learning Skills:
A. MELC: Explain the use of water from different sources in the context of daily
activities.
B. Objectives:
• identify the different sources of water;
• explain the use of water from different sources in the context of daily activities.
II. Introductory Concept
Community water systems obtain water from two sources: surface water and
ground water. People use surface and ground water every day for a variety of purposes,
including drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene, in addition to recreational, agricultural,
and industrial activities
Surface water is water that collects on the ground or in a stream, river, lake, reservoir,
or ocean. It is located on top of the earth’s surface. Surface water is constantly
replenished through precipitation, and lost through evaporation and seepage into
ground water supplies.
Surface water serves many purposes. The main uses of surface water include
drinking-water and other public uses, irrigation uses, and for use by the
thermoelectric-power industry to cool electricity-generating equipment.
Other uses:
▪ It used for cleaning, washing, bathing, preparing food and other household uses.
▪ Sustains plant and animal life.
4
3. 3
▪ For recreation.
▪ Use as routes for transportation like boats
Ground Water
Ground water, which is obtained by drilling wells, is water located below the ground
surface in pores and spaces in the rock.
Groundwater is an important part of the water cycle. It is the part of precipitation that
seeps down through the soil until it reaches rock material that is saturated with water.
Water in the ground is stored in the spaces between rock particles (no, there are no
underground rivers or lakes). Groundwater slowly moves underground, generally at a
downward angle (because of gravity), and may eventually seep into streams, lakes, and
oceans.
Does your family or community use groundwater?
Uses of Groundwater
• Groundwater is the safe source of water and considered the cleanest water
because it contains plenty of dissolved minerals which the human body needs.
• It also helps grow our food and is used for irrigation to grow crops.
• Groundwater is an important component in many industrial processes. It is a source
of recharge for lakes, rivers, and wetlands.

III. Learning Activities
ACTIVITY 1
A.Directions: Identify the different Sources of water. Choose your answers from the box
below and write them on the space provided.

4.____________ 5.________________________ 6.______________
Rain water Sea Water Natural spring
Lake River Well
1. Rain is liquid water in the form of droplets that have condensed from atmospheric
water vapor and then become heavy enough to fall under gravity.
Rain is a major component of the water cycle and is responsible for depositing most of
the fresh water on earth.
2.Clouds - it comes from evaporated water.
3.Iceberg - these are solid water found only in very cold countries.
4.Glaciers - a huge mass of ice that moves slowly over land.
5. 5
B.Directions: Put a ( ̸ )check on the space provided if the statement is RIGHT and Cross
(X) if it is WRONG.
_________ 7.. Underground water is the water found underground in the cracks and
spaces in soil, sand and rock.
________ 8.Rain water is in a form of droplets that have condensed from atmospheric
water vapor and then become heavy enough to fall under gravity.
_________9. Surface water is water that collects on the ground or in a stream, river, lake,
reservoir, or ocean.
_________10. Rivers, lakes and ponds are sea water.
ACTIVITY 2
Directions: Group the given sources of water as to their classification. Write
them in their proper column.
