2. Scene
one
The opening scene establishes the setting for the whole music video. The mise-en-scene depicts a brightly lit house in
the middle of a dark woods. The light and dark is a visual metaphor for the feelings that are about to be displayed in the
coming scenes. The Flames visible at the bottom of the screen add to the metaphor; the flames represent something
that is about to take over and destroy the house. The house is of importance in the video, because the house represents
the main character.
3. Scene
Two
The mise-en-scene depicts a dramatic atmosphere, the haze in the air creates a eerie feel. This establishes the idea that
any of the scenes using this effect are linked. The male character is lit from behind, which disables the viewer to see
face. At this point the lyrics make reference to a storm, the mise-en-scene depicts what could be perceived to be the
aftermath of a storm.
4. Scene
Three
The next camera angle continues the idea from the last, however this time it is visible that the male character is alone
and there is nothing around him, this suggest that this is part of his subconscious/ part of his imagination. We are still
unable to see the characters face which adds to the mysteriousness of the clip. The clip has clearly had some colour
enhancing filters added to uphold the eerie feeling.
5. Scene
Four
The camera then cuts to a shot of the boy in bed, the boy appears to be singing the lyrics of the song. The male is gazing
in to the distance as he sings the words, this suggest that he’s contemplating past events. From this shot we can tell the
music video is a narrative of what is happening.
6. Scene
Five
The mise-en-scene depicts a house which is now colourfully lit. This continues the metaphor from before; the light and
dark, but also the representation of the house. The use of the coloured lights represent how his emotions are tripping,
much like being at a house party.
7. Scene
Six
In this scene we appear to see the boy staring out to the viewer, this creates a link between the viewer and the artist.
This helps give the viewer an insight in to the boys life. This invites the viewer to feel the emotions trying to be
conveyed.
8. Scene
Seven
The lighting has now changed from a dark cold blue, to a dull yellow; almost golden.
The use of the colour, gold, connotes the power of the sun; much like a sun rise in the
morning, the use of this suggests a new beginning for the boy.
9. Scene
Six
The camera effect and CGI, was added in the post-recording stage. The effect looks like a filter added in post-production;
the filter used looks like ‘linear dodge’ or something similar to it. The effect is used to make it look like the boy is
glowing. This is an other reference to the light and dark metaphor. The lyrics make reference to being “healed by your
love” the camera then cuts to a glowing arm; this is a visual representation of an arm getting healed.
10. Scene
Nine
The lighting has now changed from a dull yellow, to a violent red. The use of the colour, red,
has connotations of love and pain, the song is about falling in love, the lyrics explain "It's you
that I've been waiting to find,“. However the contrasts, I believe, represent how closely love
and pain are related. “I wanna be the one that your love, that your love can heal”, these lyrics
explain how the boy has been hurt and yet needs love to heal him
