2. Connectingleave ittobeavertoFDT
Evelyn Duvall showed how the typical family with a Mother
Father and two siblings would begin and then work through
the stages of the family life cycle . This clip of “Leave it
to Beaver” shows the stage of school-age and the teenage
cycle that the family experiencing.

4. FamilyDevelopmentTheory
● One of the first theories developed in the late 1940’s
● First in its kind to be separated from psychology or
sociology theories
● Families were social groups but influenced by the
development process
● Families experience cycles and are defined in stages,
which all have roles and tasks
5. “The SFD Model borrows from
systems theory the concept of
nonsummativity, or "the whole
is greater than the sum of its
parts." Systems theory
emphasizes the wholeness and
interrelatedness of families.
It recognizes that families are
comprised of individual members
but it advances the notion that
together these members form a
whole (the family) that is not
reducible to any of its
individual parts (individual
members)” (Lazsloffy, 2002, p.
208).

7. SystemicFamilyDevelopment
● Addresses the assumptions of
family development theory:
universality and single-
generation bias.
● Focuses stressors on family
and transitions rather than
rigid stages of development.
● Recognizes the complexity of
families as well as the
diversity of families.
How does Coco represent the
SFD model?
● Multigenerational. Coco
even includes the
deceased family members!
● Miguel’s love of music
is a stressor on the
family.
● Miguel running away is
the crisis of that
stressor.
8. SFDCake
The SFD model is like a layer cake.
● Each layer is a generation.
● All the family members are the
ingredients of the cake, and the cake is
their family unit as a whole.
● The round shape of the cake is the cycle
of family life.
● Adding and removing layers are stressors
on family.
● Removing a slice of the cake is like
taking a snapshot of the family at one
particular moment in time.
● The movie Coco is like a slice of the
Rivera family cake.
