1. FAMILY
• It is the basic social institution and primary
group in the society.
• A group of persons united by the ties of
marriage, blood or adoption, constituting a
single household, interacting and
communicating.
2. Functions of the Family
• The family regulates sexual behavior and the
unit for reproduction.
• The family performs the function of biological
maintenance. The family is the chief agency
for socializing the child.
• The family gives its members status.
• The family is an important mechanism for
social control.
4. a. BASED ON DESCENT
1. Patrilineal descent- affiliates a
person with group of relatives who are
related to him/her through his/her father.
2. Matrilineal descent- affiliates a
person with group of relatives who are
related to him/her through his/her mother.
3. Bilateral descent- affiliates a
person with group of kinsmen related to
him/her through both his/her parents.
5. b. BASED ON RESIDENCE
1. Patrilocal residence- the newly married couple
live with or near the domicile of the parents of the groom.
2. Matrilocal residence- the newly married couple
live with or near the domicile of the parents of the bride.
3. Bilocal residence- it gives the couple a choice of
staying either the groom’s parents or the bride’s parents,
depending on certain factors like the relative of the family or
status, and wishes of the parents, or certain personal
preferences of the groom and the bride.
4. Neolocal residence- the newly married couple
permits to reside independently of the parents of the bride
and groom.
6. c. BASED ON AUTHORITY
1. Patriarchal family- the authority is
vested in the oldest male in the family, often the
male.
2. Matriarchal family- the authority is
vested in the mother or the mother’s kin.
3. Equalitarian family- the husband
and wife exercise a more or less equal amount
of authority.
4. Matricentric family- the prolonged
absence of the father gives the dominant
position in the family.
