There are three types of family crises: unexpected events like death or job loss ("out-of-the-blue"), normal life changes like marriage, children, or aging parents (developmental), and when families resist changing in response to crisis which can lead to harmful behaviors (structural). Families can adapt well by supporting each other through flexibility and problem solving, while dysfunctional families lack cohesion, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
