•Chairman, University Education Commission(1948-

Features of Indian education commission
• Recommended for university education
• Dr. S Radhakrsihnan was the chairman
• 10 members were in the team
• Commission report consist of 2 volume
• Ist volume contains recommendations
• II nd contains the data used for the study
Aim of University education commission
“suggest improvements and extensions that to suit present
and future requirements of the country”.
Method of study
• The commission members travel through-out India
• Distributed questionnaire to 600 persons in the field of
education.
• It interviewed administrators, organizations of the
students and educationists.
Major
Recommendations
 Structure of Education
• Admission to the universities should be after the
intermediate examinations after 11 years of school
course
• First degree should be after 3 years of college education
• ( 11 schooling + 3 years university )
TEACHING STANDARDS
• The teacher should adapt new teaching methods
• Academic and financial position of university teachers
must be improved
• Leave for higher education in India and Abroad
• Promotion should be based on merit
 Methods of Teaching
• Teaching method provides maximum student
interaction
• Introduction of tutorial system in colleges to develop
the citizenship qualities
(one to one interaction)
Examination Reforms
• Teacher must evaluate student continuously in classroom
• Objective type questions should be included in
examination system
• Internal Assessment should be introduced
• Oral examination
Religious and Moral Education
• Students should be aware of all religions in india so that
they develop a spirit of tolerance and secularism.
• The curriculum must have it’s base on Indian history and
Indian Philosophy
Medium of Instruction
• Learning, teaching and writing exams should be in one’s
mother tongue itself.
• The text books should be prepared in the respective
mother-tongue itself.
 Introduction to UGC
• University Grants Commission should be appointed to
supervise the universities all over India and to allocate
funds for its functioning
Admission
• Scientific procedure for selection of students in all
courses.
• Appointment of teachers should be based on quality and
merit
Teacher Education and Training
• Importance should be given to practice of teaching in
schools
• While evaluating the work of students special attention
should be given to their success in teaching works.
• Only suitable schools should be selected for practice of
teaching
MORAL INSTRUCTION
• At every stage of educational system, moral instructions
should be imparted.
• Moral values of all religions should be given
EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS
• The educational standards among students, the age of
admission of the students to the colleges should be
increased.
ELIGIBLITY CRITERION FOR ADMISSION
• Only eligible students must be admitted to arts and
science course in the colleges.
STANDARD OF TEACHERS
• Well disciplined talented teachers should be employed
in the educational institutions.
• Four categories of university teachers : Professors,
Readers, Lectures, Instructors.
• Promotion should be based on merit
Rural Universities
• Recommended for establishing rural universities
surrounded by rural colleges to facilitate rural
reconstruction with special reference to agriculture and
industry.
Students’ Activities and Welfare
• All universities must have hospital and health service.
• Medical Check up every year
• Sanitary inspection
• Compulsory physical training
• NCC training
Women Education
• Commission suggested for providing the same facilities to
the women colleges and universities as provided to men’s
colleges and universities.
Conclusion
• Radhakrishnan commission took into account the entire
aspects of the university education in the country. It
made recommendation helpful to harmonize the oriental
and occidental cultures.
