Introduction
• Africa is the world's second largest and second most-populous
continent (the first being Asia in both categories). At about
30.3 million km2
(11.7 million square miles) including adjacent
islands, it covers 6% of Earth’s total surface area and 20.4% of
its total land area
With 1.2 billion people as of 2016, it accounts for about 16% of the
world's human population.
• The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the
north, both the Suez Canal and the Red Sea along the Sinai
peninsula to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast
and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The c0ntinent contains 54
fully recognized sovereign states ( countries ) nine
territories and two de facto independent states with limited or
no recognition. The majority of the continent and its countries
are in the Northern Hemisphere, with a substantial portion and
number of countries in the Southern Hemisphere.

Africa’s unique wedding culture
 Kidnapping your bride
In the Sudanese Latuka tribe, when a man wants to
marry a woman, he kidnaps her.
Elderly members of his family go and ask the girl’s
father for her hand in marriage, and if dad agrees, he
beats the suitor as a sign of his acceptance of the
union. If the father disagrees, however, the man
might forcefully marry the woman anyway.
10
Putting a price on the bride
11
Lobola is an ancient and
controversial Southern African
tradition in which the families of a
bride and groom negotiate how
much the groom must pay for the
bride. All negotiations must be
done in writing — never by phone
or in person. The two families
cannot even speak until
negotiations are complete.
The groom wears a veil
The Ahaggaren Tuaregs of Algeria are part of a larger
group of Berber-speaking Tuaregs. In their culture,
the men wear veils almost all the time. However, they
can take their veils off when inside family camps or
while traveling.
12
The number of women a man can marry is determined
by how many cows he has.
Wealth is measured by cows
In the Pokot tribe in Kenya, wealth is measured by
how many cows a family has. Most Pokot people are
either “corn people” or “cow people”— meaning that’s
what they cultivate on their land — but all Pokot
people measure their wealth by cows.

Africa is a host of three
Chinese cultural
centers. The first
overseas Chinese
center was opened
in Mauritius in 1988.
Two other followed in
Egypt and Benin The
Confucius Institute,
which focuses on the
promotion of
the Chinese language
and culture has 20
centers distributed
around 13 African
countries.
China and Africa have a history of trade  relations, dating back as far
as 202 BC and AD 220. The first mention of Africa in Chinese sources
was in the Yu-yang-tsa-tsu by Tuan Ch'eng-shih (died 863), a
compendium of general knowledge where he wrote about the land of
Po-pa-li (referring to Somalia).
Archaeological excavations at Mogadishu, Somalia and Kilwa
, Tanzania have recovered many coins from China. The majority of
the Chinese coins date to the Song Dynasty, although the Ming
Dynasty and Qing Dynasty are also represented, according to Richard
Pankhurst.In 1226 Chao Jukua, commissioner of foreign trade
at Quanzhou  in the Fujian province of China, completed his Chu-fan-
chih (Description of Barbarous Peoples) which discusses Zanzibar
(Ts'ong-pa) and Somalia (Pi-P'a-Lo).

A giraffe brought from Somalia
in the twelfth year of Yongle (AD
1415).
The Yongle Emperor, personal
name Zhu Di, was the third
emperor of the Ming dynasty in
China, reigning from 1402 to
1424. Zhu Di was the fourth son
of the Hongwu Emperor, the
founder of the Ming dynasty.
China -Africa ( what do they have in common )
China and the 54-nation African continent may not
be neighbors on the world map but the two share
common characteristics that are historically-rooted.
The former lies in Eastern Asia while the later is
located south of the Mediterranean Sea bordered by
the Indian and Atlantic Oceans.
Different in location on the global space and people,
China and Africa share one thing in common -
culture, although one is already far advanced in their
destination - growth.
17
According to Prof. Li Anshan of the School of
International Studies, Peking University
both China and Africa have the same experience of
being colonized and humiliated, and both have
witnessed the struggle for liberation, independence,
development and national dignity.
"cultural offering represents a concept of equality and
sense of sharing which lays the foundation for better
bilateral relations and would make a greater
contribution to a more harmonious world."
18
The Africa today has China as its strategic
development partner, covering the shortcomings of
the continent in funding infrastructure development
and participating in their execution as well as
empowering the continent's youngsters
professionally, is therefore no surprise.
Sino-African relations
refers to the historical, political, economic, military,
social and cultural connections between China and
the African continent
19
One-third of China's oil supplies comes from the
African continent, mainly from Angola
 Benin and the Sahel countries of Burkina
Faso and Mali supply up to 20% of
China's cotton needs
Côte d'Ivoire supplies China with cocoa bean
Largeshipments of coffee are imported from Kenya
 for fish products, Namibia remains one of the
main providers
20
Aid from China to Africa
China strongly supported African Independence
Movements and gave aid to newly independent
African nations in the 1960s and 1970s. Among the
most notable early projects was the 1,860 km TAZARA
Railway, linking Zambia and Tanzania
which China helped to finance and build from 1970 to
1975.Some 50,000 Chinese engineers and workers sent
to the continent to complete the project. By 1978,
China was giving aid to more African countries than the
United States
21
Military
Military cooperation goes back to the Cold War
period when China was keen to help African
liberation movements
More recently, China has sent troops to participate
in peacekeeping. China deployed around 1,500
military personnel under the UN umbrella,
dispatched between Liberia and the Democratic
Republic of the Congo
Xi Jinping said "China strongly believes Africa belongs
to the African people and African problems should be
handled by the African people.
22
China also has military attachés 14 attachés in 14
different African countries
In July 2017, China set up its first overseas military
base at Djibouti in Africa. 中国人民解放军驻吉布提
保障基地   costing US$590 million
23
Comparing the African and Chinese traditional clothing dress
Qipao ( 旗袍 )
The Qipao, is the classic dress for Chinese Women,
which combines the elaborate elegance
of Chinese tradition with unique
elements of style.
24
Tangzhuang
The traditional Chinese attire, called Tangzhuang,
which originated at the end of the Qing Dynasty, has
been quite popular in recent years.
25
Hanfu 服汉
According to Chinese tradition, Hanfu can be traced back
to the Yellow Emperor, a great sage king of ancient China
who legend says ruled in the 27th
century B.C.. Hanfu itself
has a recorded history of more than 3000 years
26
It was worn by Han Chinese
people from the Xia Dynasty
all the way to the Ming
Dynasty. The traditional dress
of many Asian countries have
been influenced by Hanfu,
especially those of Japan and
Korea.
Mao suit (中山装)
27
The Mao suit is the western name for the style of male attire
known as the Sun Zhong shan suit or Zhongshan suit, named
after Sun Zhongshan who introduced it shortly after the
founding of the Republic of China.
Types of African clothing
Nowadays, there are two types of African clothing.
Traditional African clothing and Modern African
clothing usually referred to as African fashion.
As Africa is a big continent made up of different
countries, different kinds of people, culture,
languages, food, clothing etc, we would cover only the
popular African clothing for now.
