Our galaxy Milky Way is one of them
Group of galaxies
A group of stars is known as Galaxy
Universe is made up of billions of galaxies
Milky Way has about 1011 stars
Stars move inside a galaxy
Milky Way
 Our sun is one of them at 30,000 light years from the
centre of Milky Way
It is the nearest star to us
Distance between Sun and earth is 150 million km;
Light takes 8 m 20 s from the Sun to earth
Sun – Our Star
Spectral type → G2V;
G2 stands for spectral classification of stars having the surface
temperature between 4500 − 6000 K and
V for Luminosity classification of star.
• Sun rotates from west to east and its equator makes an
angle of about 7o with the ecliptic
 Sun does not rotate like a solid body
 It rotates like gaseous body means different speed at
different positions.
 Speed of rotation is max (rotational period of about 25
days) near the equator and min (rotational period of
about 35 days) near the poles.
General structure of the Sun
• If a photon comes out straight from the core it takes 2 sec, but it undergoes many
reflections and takes time of ~106 years to travel from core to the photosphere.
The variation of temperature and pressure in solar interior is as the following.

Corona:
 Corona emits lines of highly ionized ions e.g., Fe XIV or more.
 Mechanism responsible for high temperature is under debate.
• The atmosphere consist of three regions namely,
1. Photosphere
2. Chromosphere
3. Corona
T ≈ 6000 K
T ≈ 4000 K
T ≈ 2 x 106 K
Variation of temperature and density in solar atmosphere
Waves are always present in the atmosphere of the Sun, because the Sun is
a dynamic body.
Some conclusions:
• The Sun is a dynamic body, so that the waves are always
present in the Sun and its atmosphere.
• Waves are very important in the solar atmosphere and
throughout the cosmos.
• They are also considered as prime candidate for heating the
solar atmosphere.
