2. Andrew Goodwin
Andrew Goodwin is an author of the book “Dancing in the distraction factory” where he talks about
music television and cultural theory. In the book he writes about media cosmetics, critical theory
and pop music.
He says that each music video contains 6 things:
1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g stage performance in a metal video.)
1. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (they either illustrate, amplify, contradict)
1. There is a relationship between the music and visuals.
1. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist
may develop motifs which reoccur across their work (a visual style)
1. There is frequently reference to notion of looking. (screens with screens, telescopes etc and
particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body)
1. There is often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos)
