This document summarizes the results of a survey about preferences for short films. The survey received responses from a range of age groups but most respondents were young adults in their 20s. Most respondents were male. The majority of respondents watch short films, though not many see more than 5-10 films. Most watch short films on social media. Respondents preferred short film lengths of 5-10 minutes. Comedies were the most popular genre. Respondents thought 2-3 characters was ideal for a short film and that short films do not need a traditional 3-act structure. A minority had attended a short film festival.
2. INTRODUCTION
I have made a survey on different questions about short films, to
analyze and understand what people in general prefer about short
films. And to understand the reasoning for all the answers that were
given to me. The survey consists of approximately 10 questions
which are simple and straightforward.
As a distribution method for my survey, I chose to create a survey
on a website known as ‘surveymonkey’ that had the right format for
the production of the questions. So I transferred the results onto
this presentation to present it in a more efficient way.
3. 1) What is your age?
teen 20s 30s 40+
By the amount of answers that were given to each age
category and by the structure of the pie chart, I
received certain information about what particular age
groups are taking the survey, and taking interest to
short films. As viewed on the pie chart there is a high
percentage of young adults in their 20s that applied for
the survey. I have come to the conclusion that this could
mean that these young adults are viewing short films
for the reason to learn and improve their skills in film
making. In addition there is a large group of the elderly
that watch short films, a reason for this could be that
short films have a more understandable format, which
also doesn’t last very long.
4. 2) Whats your gender?
Male Female Other
This question just like the first
one is the basis of the survey to
get the typical information from
the survey participants. Gender
doesn’t really give any
important information
regarding short films.
5. 3) Do you watch short films?
Yes No
This question presents the amount
of survey participants that have
experience watching short films.
Fortunately a majority of the
participants do in fact watch short
films, which is beneficial to get the
information that I was seeking for.
6. 4) How many short films have you seen?
1 5 10 20+
What I wanted to achieve with this
question was to see the amount of
short films that have been watched by
an individual. The results show that not
many individuals watch a lot of short
films. Which could mean they watched
some randomly on some social media
platform/website.
7. 5) Where do you usually watch short films?
on social media at the cinema on a website Dvd
What I wanted to accomplish with this question
was to see which is the most preferable way to
watch short films. As most of the participants
chose social media. This made me realize that
watching short films on social media was the
simplest way to watch them, without having to
pay for them. This answer showed me that people
would rather prefer to watch short films at home
rather than at the cinema, as that could be more
comforting for them.
8. 6) How long do you prefer to a short film to last?
5 minutes 10 minutes 20 minutes 30 minutes
The results in this question are very
similar. This question would tell me
about the length preferences of short
films. However since there isn’t one
particular answer that’s standing out,
it tells me that as long as the quality of
the short film is good, the length
doesn’t necessarily matter. Although
more participants chose short films
that last around 5 to 10 minutes. This
could be that its less time consuming
and simpler to watch short films that
last less than 20 minutes.
9. 7) What is your favourite genre of short film
Drama Adventure Comedy Horror Romance Sci fi
Most people watch comedic short
films as they could be looking for
a simple laugh. This shows that
the most wanted art of
entertainment in short films are
comedies.
10. 8) What do you think is the ideal number of characters
included in ashort film?
1 2 or 3 5 more
The participants prefer to have a
limited amount of characters in a
short film, as it could be confusing
and stretched if there were more
characters to be viewed in a short
period of time.
11. 9) Do you think that short films should inlcude a
(traditional) 3rd act structure?
Yes No
Most participants would
rather not have a 3rd act
included. This could be
because it may be too much
for a short film to have a 3rd
act included.
12. 10) Did you ever attend a short film festival?
Yes No
The results from this question show me
how many people attend short film
festivals. The ones that do attend are likely
to really enjoy short films.
