2. Preliminary Task Evaluation/pre production
In this preliminary task I will clearly explain and evaluate my steps on planning filming and editing the
video continuity sequence.
Our first task was to research and think of an idea for short film continuity sequence. Then we had to make
a script on the fun idea I invented. The script that we had to write on word step by step - scene by scene,
adding the dialogue that included an inapropriate word that made the video PG. Then we had to make a
storyboard and the importance of making the storyboard was to describe and visualize each scene with the
appropriate camera shot and angle, adding a sketch of the visuals in front of the lens. The essence of this
preliminary task was to make a short video continuity sequence following the storyboard. I have had slight
changes of the storyboard and script due to some ideas from my classmate. The changes that I made were
mild changes in the dialogue and some camera angles that made the video continuity a whole lot better. I
had no problem finding the cast nor the location, as I could access the location at any time possible as well
as inviting the cast to film properly. There were simple props such as a book, a phone and a slice of pie
which was not a challenge to get. Because the location was indoors I didn’t have to worry about the
weather or the lighting.
3. Production
During filming I had to focus on different camera angles and shots that would reflect on the video. I had to
retake one shot several times as the cast members either didn’t take it seriously or they simply made the wrong
action. While filming different shots, I was rapidly brainstorming ideas on how to improve the final product, as I
was changing the script and the storyboard at the time I was filming the video continuity. I used the 180 degree
rule in the shot where both characters were approaching each establishing the fierce tension in the duel
between these two characters. Some shots were more challenging to film than other as I had used a phone
instead of a digital camera, and so in some angles like for example the long shot of the cupcake that is seen
through the arms of the two characters that are arm wrestling.
With my lack of understanding and knowledge in this field, I have successfully accomplished this task of video
continuity with the use of shot-reverse shot,180 degree rule and matched on action. I have had little amount of
problems while filming as I was eager to complete the video continuity task as well as possible.
4. Video continuity - Post Production
In order to successfully complete the video continuity task production stage and achieve desired result I have
used Vegas pro video editing.
The following tools and techniques imports export mark point transitions rendering setting point mark in and
mark out image scaling color corrections. I have used these tools to import raw footage and assemble initial
video continuity sequence. Once I have placed desired moving images in a narrative structure I have used mark
in and mark out tool in order to shown only one specific shot. Once I had completed initial rough editing
stages moving image and tools such as color correction, image speed, and specific special effects were used to
make the video look good.
Once I have achieved desire narrative structure I have further progressed with sound editing and noise
reduction in order to achieve dialogue clarity.
At this advanced stage of editing I have focused on CGI caption and text design due to time constrains I have
decided to use pre designing templates at the final stage video editing I have used free copyright existing
music samples in order to achieve and enhance overall viewing pleasure.
5. Conclusion
If I were to do this project again I would rather film with a digital camera instead of a mobile phone as
the camera is more equipped for filming with its stabilization and its detailed lenses for shooting
different shots. I would also be more productive in a way where I guide the cast members more
directly and correctly through each scene with the direct action and or movement – the face
expressions that give the feeling and emotion to the character and more. Also I would want to find
more time for filming the project as I did have a time limit that made me have to film as fast as
possible. For the post – production I would change the music as it seems a bit odd and goofy as well
as turn up the volume for the dialogue as it is fairly quite.
However overall it was a good experience from where I have learnt and understood certain techniques
or general understanding that has been involved in this project. From now on I am confident in my
abilities to produce a good video continuity that would allegedly impress and entertain viewers.
