The awakening trailer
1.
2. This film is of the thriller genre, consisting of horror
elements.
This film trailer consists of many selling points such
as the films unique narrative as I am unfamiliar with,
by which has a positive impact as it won't feel too
predictable for the audience watching and they be
able to watch something different to what they may
have seen before. The fact that this film includes a
female protagonist is also a unique selling point as
films of this genre consist of predominantly male
protagonists. Therefore, this film will instantly
appeal to female audience's as it challenges the
conventions of a thriller, presenting them with an
aspect they can relate to, which is their gender. This
film is set in Britain, encapsulating much of British
culture within the year of 1919, which may attract a
wider British audience of an older generation.
3. There is no music being played in the
background throughout the duration of the
trailer, however, eerie sounds are present, in
order to build suspense and tension of which
appeals to the target audience which are those
who enjoy being thrilled.
The dialect of which the character's speak in,
reassure the audience of the time in which
this film was set and their typical British
accents emphasize this.
4. The credentials at the end of the trailer
present the name of the actors/actresses,
which may attract audiences if they recognize
a particular name, such as Rebecca Hall, as
she was a member of the Iron Man cast,
which is a very popular sequel film.
Therefore, she would have already gained an
audience, of whom may also be interested in
watching another film she stars in. The
credits feature the film title once again, acting
as a final reminder which is hoped to stick in
the audience's heads so that they will watch it
when it has been released.
5. The use of variety shot types and angles have their
individual purposes. Close up shots have been used in
order to show the audience the character's facial
expressions, giving them an insight to their emotions. This
also helps to build tension within the audience as they are
able to see the fearful expression upon their face. An
effective close up shot in the trailer is of the hand on the
door handle, which may suggest that the character is
entering 'the unknown', building suspense and
encouraging audiences to watch the film. The establishing
shot in the trailer is of a school and a lake, giving the
audience a sense that this setting may play a big part in
the film. The school is also secluded, which evokes a sense
of the uncanny, as no one is present. The over shoulder
shot, over the boys shoulder in class, makes the audience
feel almost as though they were sitting in the classroom
too, making them feel part of the narrative which invites
them to try and discover the mysteries.
6. In this trailer, the colours have been de-
saturated to emphasize the fact that this film
has not been in set in a modern setting. The
screen looks grey and cold, highlighting the
ghostly atmosphere. The fast paced shots
within the film help to build tension and
work to prevent giving too much of the
narrative away.
