The student created a magazine cover by experimenting with different images and layering photos on top of header text using selection tools. For the header, they used varying font sizes to make each line the same width. Different typefaces were used for the headers, subheaders, and body text to make the spread more dynamic. A full background image was chosen over a flat background to add interest, and a band quote was overlaid to convey tone and themes.
2. Process
• When creating my
magazine cover, I
experimented with
different images. My
problems with the images
I didn’t use is that they
were too low-res or didn’t
have colours thatI liked.
3. Process
• To create the photo layering
on top of the header text, I
cut out what I wanted to be
in front of the text and
pasted it in a new layer
above the text. I used the
Quick Selection tool to do
this quickly and then I
cleaned up any mistakes
with the Polygonal Lasso
tool. I chose the polygonal
lasso over the regular lasso
tool as it allows me to be
more accurate.
4. Process
• To create the header of
the magazine I used
the same font as the
title but lighter. I used
varying font size on
each line to make the
width of each line the
same. This looks
visually interesting and
more appealing than
just regular equally
sized text.
5. Process
• I used different typefaces for the
spread, as the font I used for the
headers wouldn’t be suitable for
the body font of an article. I used
a black playfair display font for the
header, then a lighter playfair
display for the subheader. For the
body I used Montserrat. To make
the text more dynamic I accented
the first part of the text ‘Death
Grips’ by making it bold. At the
end of the text, I placed a footer
including the writer’s name and
the magazine. To differentiate this
from the rest of the text I changed
the colour to red, the same as the
headers.
6. Process
• To create the background, I
opted to use a full image
instead of a flat background. I
used this because I think it
looks more dynamic and
interesting than a basic
background with an image on
top. Though, I didn’t want to
leave the image space
completely empty so I added a
quote from the band. I think
this adds to the spread in an
interesting way, and helps
convey the tone and themes of
the band and what they’re
about.
