3. CONCEPTS
• Movement is any change of position of chemicals, cell
organelle, cellular contents, organs in performing all body
functions.
• None of the body functions is possible without the operation
of movement of one or th other kind.
• All human sensory receptors & human responses through
receptors are through the medium of movement.
• All the effector organs, namely muscles and hormones act
through movements.
• Body movement is fundamentally of two categories, namely
Physical Activity and Exercise.
• Body movements promote health while inactivity destroys
health.
• All communications in the body are conducted through one or
the other kind of movement- electrical, chemical, through
body fluids, musclular , neural and hormonal.
4. OBJECTIVES
• THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS LESSON ARE LISTED BELOW:-
• 1. The learner must be able to understand the meaning
and definition of body movement.
• 2. The learner must be able to understand the
difference between physical activity and exercise which
are the two principle forms of body movement ,
essential for human healthy life.
• 3. The learner should not only theoretically learn about
essential regular exercises and body movement for
enjoying life, but must get motivated to adopt healthy
behaviors involving planned conscious exercise &
regular active body movement lifestyle, for lifelong
better health, performance, and enjoyment.
5. INTRODUCTION
• Before dealing with the need of movement (which is ,
• however quite obvious also to all of us, because none of us
can remain without a body movement at any time), let us
define , what is a movement.
• Movement is any change of position of body, body parts or
even any activity or communication of metabolites or any
chemical reaction involving any kind of energy.
• Thus, move may be said to be the alternative name to life.
• All living being must move either from place to place or
standing at the same point , may be not as a whole, but in
moving their cellular contents.
• Hence, it is evident that movement is the fundamental
property of all life.
6. DEFINITIONS OF MAJOR TWO CATEGORIES OF
COMMON BODY MOVEMENTS
• Body movements or use of energy for communication or
performance is divided in two categories:-
• 1. Physical Activity.
• 2. Exercise.
• Physical Activity: It is defined as any body movement that
involves the use of energy and may be voluntary or
involuntary.
• Exercise :- It is defined as any series of willfully planned
body movements seeking to improve health, fitness and
wellness. Although exercise is as essential as involuntary
body movements
7. NEED OF BODY MOVEMENT
• As evident, Body Movements are essential for life, to
perform all essential life functions.
• All body functions are performed through one or the
other kind of communication. And all communications
are performed by the medium of movements.
• These communications involve movements of chemical
level to organism level through the stages of chemical
reactions, electrical communications, cellular activities,
tissues, organs, and body system activities.
• Exercise, a series of voluntary planned movements is
essential for good health, fitness and wellness. Therefore,
exercise must be adopted by all on regular basis to enjoy
fuller enjoyable life.
8. NEED OF BODY MOVEMENTS
• For enjoying good health,Exercises are to be repeated at
planned intervals on regular basis.
• It has been proved by research that inactivity
diseases(Cancers, diabetes, heart attacks, brain strokes etc.)
have become pandemic and fatal, second only to smoking.
• Unfortunately, universities could not make it a regular formal
core part of all undergraduate degree courses in spite of the
fact that UNESCO had included them in human rights.( This is
probably due to un-noticed wide spread physical illiteracy as
well as for physical efforts involved).
• None does any pjysical labour without any motives.
However, the general motive of exercise to improve health is
agreed by all. Again the specific knowledge about balanced
exercise procedures, is missing due to physical illiteracy even
among the educated people.
9. Movement for all life
• Even to wild animals, movement is not a
chore, not a temporary punishment for being
physically lazy and out of shape, not an
optional activity just for better looks, but a
compulsion for life.
• — Erwan Le Corre
10. SOME IMPORTANT QUOTES ON NEED
OF REGULAR BODY MOVEMENT
• “We have a brain for one reason and one
reason only — and that’s to produce
adaptable and complex movements”.
— Daniel Wolpert
(NEUROSCIENTIST, CAMBRIDGE, ENGLAND)
11. Ancient observations
• Movement is ancient.
• Movement was here first. Hunting and gathering,
dancing round the fire.
• “All parts of the body which have a function, if
used in moderation and exercised in labour,
become healthy and well developed and age
more slowly. But if left unused and idle, they
become liable to disease, defective in growth,
and age quickly.”
-------Hippocrates (460BC-370 BC)
13. HEALTH PROFESSIONALS’ RESPONSIBILITY
• The health and fitness professionals have a
responsibility to educate all students about
the need of body movements, body functions,
and abilities.
• Recognizing that the human body was made
to move and that it functions best when it is
regularly physically active provides a critical
foundation for everyone’s journey to improve
her/his fitness and overall wellbeing.
14. Benefits of Physical Activity
• Examining the immediate and long-term benefits of physical activity provides clear
evidence that the human body is made to move.
• Examples of powerful benefits of movement include:
• Lower blood pressure
• Better regulation of blood sugar
• Lower resting heart rate
• Better control of body fat
• Improved immune function
• Increased muscular strength and endurance
• Improved cardiorespiratory functioning
• Increased flexibility
• Better joint health
• Improved mental functioning
• Higher quality of sleep
• In just a few minutes, physical activity boosts our metabolism. Research shows that
physical activity decreases depression and increases self-esteem. This list could go
on and on. Further, it is important to realize that the human body contains more
than 600 muscles, which is an indication that the body was constructed for amazing
physical capabilities. It is clear that the human body functions best when it is active.
15. Consequences of Physical Inactivity
Further proof for the needs of movement is that the human body was
designed to move.
• Physical inactivity leads to deterioration, such as:
• Loss of bone density
• Stiffening of joints
• Weakening of muscles
• Weakening of the heart and lungs
• Degeneration of the cellular energy systems
• As soon as one sits down , becomes inactive, electrical activity shuts
off in the leg muscles. Calorie burning is significantly reduced
(potentially to as little as one calorie or less, depending on one's
height, weight, gender, etc.) and lipase, an enzyme in the legs that
assists with the breakdown of fat, dramatically and rapidly drops.
• After two hours of sitting, HDL (the so-called good cholesterol) levels
drop by 20 percent. After 24 hours of sitting, insulin effectiveness
drops 24 percent and the risk for diabetes rises.
• Sitting increases the risk of death up to 40 percent.
16. THREE TYPES OF EXERCISES
• For health everybody, needs to be literate in essential 3
types of exercise need of body movements enlisted
below:-
• 1. Flexibility: Stretching movement for range of motion at
various body joints.
• 2. Endurance : Aerobic exercises of long duration tolerable
activities. Best examples are swift walking, jogging,
cycling, swimming etc.
• 3. Strengthening :These are divided in two categories-
• (a) Muscle Strenghthening or gravitational. E.g. Weight
lifting, Sit-ups, Pull-ups,Dand-bathaks(Stand-ups).
• (b) Bone Strengthening or impact movements.e.g.
Jumping, Rope dancing.
17. PHYSICAL EXERCISES METHOD
• WARM-UP =3-5 MINUTES.
• MAIN EXERCISES RELATED 2 HEALTH&FITNESS
= 10-30 MINUTES.
• COOL DOWN = 5 MINUTES / TILL RECOVERY
OF PULSE RATE
26. FUNDAMENTAL BASIS OF ASSIGNING DEVELOPMENTAL
AGE FROM SECONDARY SEX CHARACTERS
• The secondary sex characters , pubic hair (in
both)and breast development (in females),and
stages of facial hair(in males) are the basis of
assigning developmental age (Early & late
maturing age levels) with the help of
secondary sex character.
• Various stages of development are compared
with the standards of respective development
to assess one’s secondary sex character age.
