This document outlines the major stages of human growth and development that are taught in a class for M.Sc. Forensic Science students. It discusses the prenatal stages of germinal, embryonic, and fetal and the postnatal stages of baby, child, adolescence/puberty, and adulthood. The stages are described in detail including duration and key developmental milestones to help forensic experts assess age. The lesson objectives are to understand the stages of growth and development and how they are used in age determination.

3. Concept Statements
• The process of Human Growth and
Development is divided into many stages,
both during Pre-natal and Post-natal periods.
• The stages of human growth and development
are marked with specific incidents and are
helpful in assigning age verification by the
forensic experts.
• Understanding criteria of assigning stages of
development is important for forensic experts.
4. CONTENTS DEALT IN THIS LESSON
• MAJOR STAGES OF GROWTH AND
DEVELOPMENT BOTH DURING PRE-NATAL
AND POST-NATAL PERIODS OF HUMAN
GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT.
5. OBJECTIVES
The learner should be able to
• Enlist major stages of human growth and
development.
• Enlist & describe duration of stages of Pre-
natal Growth & Development.
• Enlist & describe duration of the major stages
of post-natal development.
6. MAJOR STAGES OF G & D
The process of human growth and development
is divided in two main stages:-
• 1. PRE-NATAL STAGE
- ( Conception To Birth).
• 2. POST-NATAL STAGE
– (Birth to Adulthood).
8. PRE-NATAL STAGES
Pre-natal period is further divided into three
major stages :-
• 1. Germinal Stage
-It’s duration is 2 weeks.
• 2. Embryonic Stage,
-It’s duration is 6 weeks
• 3. Fetal stage
-it’s duration is 30 weeks.
12. PRE NATAL STAGES OF G & D
THIS ILLUSTRATION CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES THAT THE FORENSIC EXPERT
MAY EASILY ASSIGN AGE BASED ON THE DEVELOPMENT STAGE OF THE
EMBRYO (FROM ITS RELATIVE SIZE AND VISIBILITY OF ANATOMICAL PARTS.
13. BRIEF DESCRIPTION
OF PRE-NATAL STAGES
• 1. Germinal Stage:- The germinal stage starts with the fertilization
of female ovum with a sperm of the male.
Fertilization occurs typically two weeks after the first day of last
menstruation cycle of the pregnant woman.
• 2.Embryonic Stage :- This stage starts with the COMPLETION OF
implantation of the blastocyst on the wall of the uterus (WOMB).
• 3. Fetal Stage :- After 8 weeks of growth and development after
fertilization , the developmental stage is known as fetal stage, and
the embryo converts to the Fetus who has all the anatomical
organs in much better state as compared to those of the embryo
(as seen in Figure in the previous slide).
• The duration of fetal stage lasts about 30 weeks, till delivery where
after, the neonate starts to grow out side the safe environment of
the mother.
14. POSTNATAL GROWTH & DEVELOPMENTAL
STAGES
• 1.BABY, UPTO 3 YR.
• A) NEONATAL, up to 1 month.
• B)INFANT, up to 1 year.
• C)TODDLER, up to 18 month- <3 YR.
• 2.CHILD, 3 Yr. to Adolescence/Puberty.
• A)Early childhood,<5year.
• B)Pre-adolescent childhood.
3.ADOLESCENT/PUBERTY/Late childhood.
• 4. ADULTHOOD- Young Adult, up to 35,
• Middle Aged Adult, up to 50
• Old , up to 65
• Very old, >65 until death.

19. APGAR SCALE (Backronym of G & D )
• The Apgar scale is determined by evaluating
the newborn baby on five simple criteria on a
scale from zero to two, then summing up the
five values thus obtained. The resulting Apgar
score ranges from zero to 10. The five criteria
are summarized using words chosen to form
a backronym (Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Ac
tivity, Respiration).
