2. Key features of a factual
production:
Many factual videos use a Presenter which is a style of storytelling where the audience
learn the story through a guide. The audience see this person on camera as they take
them through the story in their own words by following a script. Another form of
conveying the information is through narration, they act as an objective storyteller
and is usually seen within genre documentaries. On the other hand there can also be
no narration at all where the story is pieced together using only pre-existing clips of
interviews, found footage, on-screen text and visual graphics.
The recreational or dramatisation of events is often used in historical documentaries
where important events have already taken place and if there is no existing footage to
base it on, it can also be used to fill in the gaps within a story as it is being told. With
the rise in social video sharing platforms a lot of videos on sites such as YouTube tell a
story through the use of Drawings and Animation – This is another creative way to tell
the story. This for example could look like when you flip the pages of a book fast and it
reveals a “moving” scene even though each image is a drawing.

This video on the Al Jazeera English channel
details how ideology can be hidden within the
media we consume such as the racialization of
crime, Patriarchal narrative on gender, othering of
immigrants/religion and social class. These topics
are along the same lines as what I would go with
for my own factual piece, mostly focusing on
topics which include the controversial subject of a
female Doctor in Doctor Who and the existence of
Black Panther/Love, Simon that possibly walks the
line of entertainment and pushing representation.
Asking the question of whether it is genuine or
pushing an agenda.

This video on the ThinkTank channel contains a
discussion about how representation is
encouraged and needed in front of and behind
the camera, mainly focusing on the release of
Black Panther and what it does for the black
viewing public as well as the financial benefits
whilst also discussing how there is a severe lack
of female directors and just filmmakers in
general within Hollywood. They bring up the
interesting point that there is value in seeing
something you relate to on screen and it can be
very important in how you and other people
value themselves.

This video discusses the apparent feminist
misandry which may exist within the series with
certain comments as mentioned before through
out and how the show handles certain characters
where the female cast are allowed to make light
of certain traits or stereotype in the form of a joke
or ‘banter’ without the male characters being able
to rebuttal due to some sort of agenda and the
BBC being afraid of receiving criticism because of
it. Essentially portraying that the BBC Liberal
media celebrates women whilst having men be
the subject of jokes instead of celebrating both as
equal parts.

Does Doctor Who have a Feminist Agenda?

This video on the FiveWhoFans channel asks the
question of ‘Does Doctor Who have a Feminist
Agenda’ and discusses the topics surrounding it. With
how people reacted to the news, and Jodie Whittaker’s
comments of being a feminist as well as the show
having a history of seeing the importance of equality
in all forms of life with the Daleks seeing themselves
as the superior life forms and a complete antithesis to
equalist and feminist ideals with The Doctor being
there to stop them. As well as behind the scenes
interviews where the showrunner Chris Chibnall states
that he always wanted his Doctor to be a women and
fans were worried that he never called for male actors
as well. The first series of the revived series is one of
the most diverse set of characters in comparison to
other shows so it is strange that the show is only
recently being criticised for pushing an agenda when it
always has. However under Steven Moffat the lines
between pushing an agenda positively and negatively
through comments made by certain characters which
are dependent on how you personally take them.

This video discusses how The Doctor
shouldn’t be played by a women due to
him seeing the character as a fatherly
figure for Earth and changing it for shock
value wouldn’t be progressive but instead
extremely forced. He also brings up that
he’d rather have other strong female
characters that aren’t ‘stuffed’ into the
skin of an already established male one.

This video discusses how The Doctor should
and can be played by a women in response
to Paul’s video and argues that the only real
difference between a Mother and a Father is
the gender with them still being a strong
parental figure. She does agree that strong
female characters are needed within the
show but the Doctor’s character and the
established narrative allows for a gender
change as does his personality each time he
regenerates. She makes a point that if other
characters can change gender and race then
why does The Doctor remain a white male.

8. Research Summary
To begin my research I looked at the key features of existing factual
productions which will help me build a basis for my own and know what
features to include in it, as well as this I have collected and viewed a lot of
content which will contribute to my own production in one way or
another, for example I have researched videos which are similar in style
and content to the production I am intending to make – these include
videos which contain content which is related to the production and
information on the sort of audience that is not only interested in the series
but by extension who would be the best target audience for my video. As
well as this I viewed videos from other creators that share similar editing
techniques to the style I will be attempting to implement into my own
work whilst still having it be unique to me.
Think about a subject you could write about, a design style could work in and why you would want to do it.
Think about content. What different visual and written elements would you include?
Initial ideas can be documented in any way that you would like. Mind maps are ok, but they don’t work for everyone. If you prefer to simply write your idea, do that. If you want to combine text and images, do that. As long as you communicate a potential idea, the method is up to you. Present you idea and also some justification for your choices. You can link this back to your research.
