Documentary Styles
In 1991, Bill Nichols, American film critic and theoretician, proposed six documentary modes. Each mode contained its own specific characteristics. They have their own goals and require
their own distinct documentary techniques.
• Poetic: They are documentaries that seek to emphasise as much as possible their visual dimension. The images can provoke more sensations, affections, and
impressions than necessarily transmit an argument or build a clear narrative about the historical world.
• Expository: In the expository way of representing reality, the documentary filmmaker aspires to give the impression of objectivity (always remembering that this total
objectivity is an impossibility). Thus, the voice that narrates the facts seeks to judge the actions of the historical world without getting involved with them.
• Reflexive: The reflexive documentary is more concerned with the process of representing the outside world than with what it wants to make known to the public.
Documentaries of this type show themselves as representation. They speak for themselves, and for their process of realisation.
• Observational: Observational documentaries attempt to discover the ultimate truth of their subject by acting as a fly-on-the-wall—in other words, observing the subject’s
real-life without interrupting. This style of documentary embraces the cinema verité movement. Cinematographers are often asked to be as unobtrusive as possible. This is
to capture their subjects in a raw, unguarded state.
• Performative: Performative documentaries centre on the filmmaker’s interaction with his or her subject, using the filmmaker’s personal experience or relationship with the
topic as a springboard for delving into wider, subjective realities about politics, history, or groups of people. The cinematographer is often asked to capture the production
process as well as intimate footage that depicts the filmmaker’s personal interaction with the subject.
• Participatory: The participatory documentary aims to show that the truth of an interview is the truth of the encounter between who is filming and who is being filmed. Thus,
the participatory method is the opposite of the observational mode.
What are Documentary Modes? Theory Explained - So The Theory Goes
What Documentary Style will I be doing?
• I will be doing a participatory style documentary. This is due to the filmmaker being
included in the film's narrative and directly interacts with the film's subjects, as my
documentary is about me and I will be in my documentary and be the auteur of my
project. I like this style as it provides more of a connection between the viewer and the
filmmaker themselves. This is specifically going to be beneficial as I aim to make the
viewer feel motivated as a direct consequence of seeing my success. My hope is that this
makes the audience and myself more aligned.
• I am planning to appear in my project as the documentary will revolve around my story, I
will be heard asking interviewees questions which wont be edited out, this establishes a
relationship between the viewer and the filmmaker. It also gives a behind the seen feel
and that makes the audience relate, as you can see how they went about making the
documentary.
• I will research different existing participatory style documentaries in hope I can add tones
and features to my own project.
• I will have aspects similar to observational as whoever is filming me won't be interacting
with the documentary but me infront of the camera will. However, unlike observational
when I am behind the camera or asking interview questions I will be interacting.
Participatory Style
Explanation
‘Participatory documentary is a subgenre of documentary filmmaking in which the filmmaker is included in the film's narrative and directly
interacts with the film's subjects. In this type of documentary form, the filmmaker may appear in front of the camera during an interview, be
heard as voiceover behind the camera, and can even appear on camera without any other subjects. The effect of the filmmaker's presence
may be minimal, or it may be a major influence on the narrative.’
‘The participatory mode of documentary filmmaking stands in contrast to the observational documentary film, in which the director acts as a
fly on the wall, observing the world around them without interacting with it.’
Characteristics of Participatory
‘The filmmaker is a character. In a participatory documentary, the filmmaker must either be seen or heard at some point in the movie, giving
them a presence that is often as important as the primary subject.
The interviewer’s questions are included in the edit. In other documentary genres, subjects answer interview questions, but the questions
themselves are edited out. In the participatory mode, the audience is allowed to see or hear the filmmaker asking the questions. This
establishes a clearer relationship between the filmmaker and the interview subject, while also giving the viewer a more "behind the scenes"
look at how the filmmaker elicited the subject's responses.
The viewer is aligned with the filmmaker. The audience experiences the film through the filmmaker's point of view, allowing them to intuit
how the filmmaker felt in the moment and consider how they might have reacted in the same situation.’

How these techniques will help me
• I like this as it affects my idea and how I will go about making this project. Participatory
makes me more involved with the project as I am in the scenes, and I will interact with the
films subjects as they are about me. 'the filmmaker may appear in front of the camera
during an interview, be heard as voiceover behind the camera, and can even
appear on camera without any other subjects', I will be doing all these things as I
am planning on being a major presence in my documentary, I will be the main
character within the documentary. You see this style in many documentaries about
famous people. Two that spring to mind is Ronnie Coleman: The King and Kanye
Wests 'Jeen-Yuhs'. These two is basically following around and going into the life of
these two people. I don’t want the documentary to come off as self-obsessed which
is a common misconception of bodybuilding. When I ask a question in an interview,
I would like my voice to be heard asking it, this is a commonly used in Participatory
documentary's. I like this being in there because it will give more of a connection
between the audience and me. I want the viewer and me to be very close
throughout the whole documentary and to feel like they know me, which is what I
thought especially when watching 'Jeen-Yuhs'. I am going to research in more
depth both Jeen-Yuhs and The King so I can get a fuller understanding of a
Participatory Documentary. I will also research about Dylan Mcknight as his
documentary has a similar subject structure and is a participatory documentary.

Joe Fazer
Joe Fazer Information
Joe is a youtuber who came has nearly 1 million subscribers to his channel. He became famous for his
transformation videos and these type of videos have inspired me to do some research on this type of
content of videos in which he does.
2 Year Body Transformation From Skinny To Muscular
My thoughts
The way this video is made is not what I want my video to be alone, I want to maybe get a portion similar
to this product he's made but shorten it down into the documentary.
This video is more of a montage of videos and photos and there's not that much more to it; whereas I
want my documentary to have more in depth conversation of what and how I did the transformation.
He starts with captions to structure his videos; in my video I will use voiceover instead of the captions as
the main way of structure to my project.
He uses a lot of montages; this is a style I may use but as my project isa documentary I won't rely on this
being the bulk of my video rather it being a section of the video.
The music he uses is very motivational and this is a common trope of transformation videos, this is
something I will be going into more depth later in my research.
Joe Fazer audience
profile
Age demographic
• Joe Fazer's audience is mostly young with ages of young teens to early 20s. I
have based this claim on the type of videos he creates as he runs a series called
‘skinny kid bulking up’. Most of his videos are trying to help young people who
were like him, ‘bulk up’. I think this is why he is so popular. As like so many young
men, or children, Joe Fazer was very skinny and wanted to gain size, so people
can really relate to his experience. I do think older people who just like
bodybuilding/working out as the sport itself can enjoy his content, but it would be
harder to gain a connection with the content as why would they want advice from
someone new to bodybuilding and someone who is still a child.
Gender demographic
I think its easy to presume males are his number one fans, because of his advice
being from a male himself and his tips being somewhat tailored for men but I had to
find evidence for this so I scanned through his comments. I struggled to find any
female commentors whatsoever, and all the videos based on him from other creators
are from the male gender. In my opinion the research I have conducted I think its
clear to see that not many females if any watch Joe Fazer on a regular occurrence.
Chris Bumstead
Chris Bumstead information
Christopher Adam Bumstead is a Canadian IFBB professional
bodybuilder. Bumstead is the reigning Mr. Olympia Classic Physique
winner, having won the competition in 2019, 2020 and 2021. He was
also the runner-up in 2017 and 2018- Wikipedia
FULL DAY OF EATING | BULKING EDITION
My thoughts
Chris Bumstead here in this video goes through what he consumes,
food and supplement wise.
The way he talks reasonably laid back in a colloquial and in an informal
manor is something I will include in my project. Additionally, I aim to
use, like Chris Bumstead, field specific lexis. These are words and
vocabulary specific to a particular profession or group of people
engaged in the same/similar activity. In my case and Chris' this is
bodybuilding.
I think including this in my video fits really well with the type of content
which I want including in my project.
Chris Bumstead Audience Profile
Age demographic
• Chris Bumstead is seen as a god and role model across all ends of
the age spectrum across the weightlifting community. He is seen as
what the peak of the sport is. He is the Messi or Ronaldo of his
sport. I have based this on my own beliefs and my friends, but I
have also seen countless videos of men idolising Chris. This praise
comes from all ages as younger people like him for being an
inspiration, a role model, whereas older people respect him for his
achievements and his body.
Gender demographic
• Again like Joe Fazer, Chris Bumstead’s audience is mainly if not all men;
this is due to him being so influential in ‘men's bodybuilding’. Girls don’t
want advice from a man on how he got that big as for women's body
building the requirements for what looks good are very different. Men
mostly want to get as big muscles as possible whereas girls focus a lot on
lower body rather than a big frame. For evidence of this claim there is
plenty of videos of men taking inspiration from Chris doing the same
thing he did. All the clothing Chris sells are in men fits meaning his target
audience is men so why would he sell girl clothes if not many girls will
even be interested in his content. All the commentors on his videos are
also guys, giving me more indication that the gender demographic for
Chris Bumstead is males.

Dylan Mcknight
Dylan Mcknight Information
Dylan Mcknight is a youtuber who became famous for his flipping and
mainly gym-oriented videos. His breakout video was a transformation
video ‘Dylan McKnight 2 Year Natural Transformation 18-20’ which got
him very popular as the transformation was reviewed by many as
exceptional and inspirational.
Dylan McKnight 2 Year Natural Transformation 18-20-Documentary
My thoughts
This video is a documentary in a (participatory style) as he uses his
own narration as well as featuring in the documentary.
The opening few moments is a black screen with Dylan's voice saying,
“what could you be if you dedicated your entire being to one thing” “let
me show you”. In my opinion that’s a very good opening, near perfect.
It makes me personally very 'pumped up' and excited to see the rest of
the video, it’s the hook essentially. I want the same feeling he created
for this opening for mine however I don’t want the black screen
opening. I'm thinking more like a slow-motion clip or a clip that the
viewer will see later bit a snippet version, like a teaser.
Music
I admire his use of music in this documentary and how it affects mood, tone and storytelling. He uses a
remix of Mr sandman by a talented artist called SYML.
Mood
As soon as the music hits the mood is changed to dramatic and inspiring. I think this is important to not
only a documentary but especially to a bodybuilding documentary which in my opinion is to inspire other
people to work out like he did. This mood is something I'm looking to replicate in my work as I think it
enhances how engaged the viewer is in the film. Dramatic things are usually more entertaining, and it
really gets the viewer hooked because they want to see the outcome. Inspiring is one of my main goals
of my whole project and I think if you inspire someone with your work that has the biggest lasting effect
after the watch than anything you can do.
Tone
If say a happy upbeat song was used the tone would be completely different and worse, the song they’ve
picked is very emotive and it will take a lot of research of music to find something to replicate this tone.
Storry telling
Using this remix of Mr Sandman paints a picture of overcoming struggles and it really complements the
footage shown. Without the music we would be left staring at slow-motion footage of two people working
out. For my project I want the music to be used for a purpose either to add to the storytelling, tone or
mood.
Dylan McKnight Audience Profile
Age demographic
Dylan Mcknight resonates with a lot of young people as a lot of young
adults and teens dream of achieving a dream physic like he did within
a year timespan. This idolisation has given Dylan an age demographic
of 12–25-year-olds. Even older people can admire his content
however I have based his age demographic off himself being a young
guy (21 years old) and also his content being centred around people
who need help at the start of their weightlifting journey; which is
normally younger people.
Gender demographic
Dylan McKnight's Gender demographic is almost definitely majority
male, as his humour is stereotypically male type jokes. He competes
in Men's bodybuilding so he will get a lot males knowing him from this
as I think when it comes to bodybuilding you usually are more
interested in the shows from your gender as this is the same for any
sport. All male commentors on his videos which has been a trend in
identifying the gender demographic in these influences thus far.
Sneako
COLOUR AND EDITING
Sneako’s video editing style is something I will be taking heavy influence from.
Here you can see he is colour correcting his video to be green for this part of the
video and his hand drawn caption also colour coordinates. I really like this style for the
colours as it makes the whole video different and adds to the entertainment of the
video. He also distorts his image and changes his colour on his image, I’ve done similar
things to this before so it shouldn’t be too hard to replicate but I want to make the
effect subtle like his is. I am going to test out while doing my voiceover I will film
myself and try and recreate the styles you see above.
He also uses this drawing editing style which I'm going to require more research for.
SNEAKO INFORMATION
SNEAKO started out uploading videos of gameplay and giving
commentary of video games, before switching to a style best
described as commentary and motivational, with many
different topics relating to life. He is most famous for his
video "Would You Say the N Word for 1 Dollar" where he
went around doing a street interview to random strangers
and asking them if they would say the n word if he paid them
$1. He would conduct similar videos like this like "Is It Okay
To Be Fat" and "Why Men and Women Aren't Equal“. SNEAKO

MUSIC TRANSITIONS
Sneako uses music to transition his
videos, he normally uses these in opening
sequences or closing sequences, but
sometimes uses them in different part
of his video in kind of a quickfire
montage. I like this and am interested
about including it into my video.

(1) I Dropped Out to Make Youtube Videos - YouTube
Sneako audience profile
Age demographic
Sneako is a 23-year-old university drop out, which is something the older
generation stereotypically says not to do; it is increasingly becoming more
popular to drop out of education to persue your dreams and even more of a
trend to follow your passion in the social media industry. This decision as well
as his humour of old people and perceived childish remarks have given
Sneako a huge following in the youth. Hes a young man with an outspoken
and sometimes controversial voice, which can put off some older closed-
minded people whereas younger people tend to be open free-thinking
people. The language he tends to use are words that are used by the youth
of today and can normally not be understood or disregarded by the older
generation. These reasons are why I have concluded that Sneako's target
audience is somewhere in between 12-30.
Gender demographic
For Sneako's gender demographic, I can see why women would not like him
as he is perceived as a 'player' or arrogant but if you look past that he just
makes really nice content for anyone. There are more evidence for his
demographic to be more male focused as he does use terminology that
women may find offensive. As being a fan myself I have seen many videos
where he is doing public interviews where I can see literal hatred in the eyes
of women when interacting with women and for men this is most likely
amusing. Hes also aware that women tend to hate him with his upload on
January 23rd, 2019, titled 'The reason all women hate me. YouTube is also
predominantly a man dominated app as two studies conducted in 2020 and
2022 found that more men watch YouTube compared to women. This is why I
have concluded that Sneako's gender demographic is male.
Sneako’s scribble effect
After looking back at my contextual I
stated that I would research about
the scribble effect. I had already
planned to look at a video but
realised after I started to do research
how to do the effect, I found it was on
aftereffects. So, I think it would just
be easier on premier pro; for this I
would have to use a app on a phone
or iPad but I have high hopes for this.
This explanation was also a lot simpler
than the other ones I looked at, as
this duration was only 2 minutes.

The King and Jeen-Yuhs: what did I learn?
Introduction
To start off both these documentary's are 'fly on the wall documentary's' which is not
technically participatory but say if they had done some work behind the scenes it would be
participatory. That’s where it is a tricky line between observational and participatory. For the
sake of this I am going to imagine they are participatory as I don’t think it will benefit my
research journey trying to only research participatory documentaries as most documentary's I
have seen have blurred the lines between each style anyway. There are many aspects I can take
from these two films.
What did I learn
I like how both these documentaries show the jobs of both men and how dedicated they are
with their careers but still got there human side. This creates a close connection with the
audience as you see the people as three dimensional I think how they do this is showing there
sweet side as Kanye West with his mother Donda and Ronnie Coleman with his kids and It helps
contrast this larger than life narrative and really makes them as a human seem relatable . I will
use this as one I think the viewer will be much more invested in the documentary having the
main character seem real and just like everyone else and two because it will also inspire other
people that they can start there bodybuilding journey too. I have stated this as one of my
biggest goals previously in my work. Inspiring is also a big common trend within transformation
videos as there are countless people who have started their journey watching Joe Fazer's
transformation, or Dylan Mcknights for example.
Jeen Yuhs Audience Profile
Age demographic
On the right I have an IMDB rating by demographic table. As you can see the
primary age demographic Is in the 18-29 range as this got the highest score. I
have got to agree with this as you get the newer Kanye fans and ones that know
him from his Chicago days in the older bit of that age range. You also have to
include that Kanye Wests primary target audience is aged between 16-24. Kanye
Wests music is very out there and includes topics like profanity and sexuality that
older people may not like to hear. In conclusion I think with having two pieces of
evidence on Kanye Wests age demographic being between 18-24 but I also have
to use my common sense and say that I (17) and many of my friends who are
younger than me listen to him. The age rating is also a 15 so it's safe to assume
that 15-year-olds listen to him. It's also safe to assume that people 45+ may not
like his music as my previous statements have said. In my opinion 15-45 is the
age demographic for Jeen-Yuhs because younger than that are not allowed and
may not like them slow style of a documentary. The older range after 29 is for
people who know him from his Chicago days or even like his music because even
Kanye is 44 years old now so some of his audience will be that age. 30-44 also
has the most reviews on with 1,347 compared to the next highest 948. My
estimate is an age of 15-45 for the demographic.
Gender demographic
For the gender demographic the majority of the votes are from men 2819
whereas women have 351. The men's reviews are also more positive having a
8.2 rather than a 7.8 from females. Kanye West is also a man meaning more men
can relate to him easier because they share the same gender. Kanye West is in
the rapper industry which is dominated by men. Nielsens 2015 audience data
shows that men aged 18-24 listen to rap the most, which also backs up my age
demographic and my gender demographic that men listen to hip hop the most. In
conclusion with having more reviews and positive ones from men on Jeen Yuhs
and the data that shows more men listen to Kanye and hip hop more than women
I can conclude that men watch Jeen-yuhs the most.
Ronnie Coleman: The king Audience Profile
Age demographic
Age demographic for The King is quite simple I think as most the reviews come
from males 18-44 with a peak at 30-44nwith 1,611 compared to 18-29 with 487. I
think this because younger people 18-29 know him through old videos and
because he's a legend of the sport but may not know much about him so there's
not loads of people interested in that age group, whereas 30-44 probably lived
with him being the best at his peak. A report from IHRSA shows that 18-34 is the
most popular followed by 35-54 is the most popular ages to go to the gym, and
the documentary is based on bodybuilding so that also fits the 18-44 age range.
In conclusion I think that 18-44 is the age demographic of The King.
Gender demographic
For gender you can see that only 91 women did reviews whereas men did 2,574.
That is a crazy difference. For more evidence on why The Kings demographic is
because Ronnie is a man competing in a men's competition, meaning men will
relate more to him and idolise him. I am sure this also applies to women body
builders for instance if there was a Denise Masino who is a women's bodybuilding
pioneer, I'm sure her target audience will be majority women who are into
bodybuilding. Bodybuilding is an industry dominated by men so there will be more
men interested in this documentary. Ronnie Colemans physic is considered by a
lot of women too big but for men he is a legend, women and men body build
differently; for instance, women tend to build lower body mainly and look to tone
rather than but on supraphysiological amounts of mass whereas men do. In
conclusion I think my knowledge and evidence that I have stated implies a greater
significance on the demographic being male as the primary demographic and
female being secondary.

In this section I shall be going over existing products and amylase both positive and negative comments and see how I can use this information to add to my own project.
POSTIVE
You can see in his review that he likes the style of documentary that the director went with. He appreciates how even though it shows his 'insane work ethic', you still get his
well-rounded character ark with his 'heart-warming relationship with Donda', his mother. He ends his praise with the statement of 'I understand Kanye after this
documentary'. This is an affect I want to have as I am showing how hard it is to do bodybuilding but also showing about what its like to be me as well. In conclusion this
reinforces the research I have done previously on Jeen-Yuhs and especially how having a relatable character effects how the viewer enjoys the film.
NEGATIVE
These were the only negative ratings I could find as this documentary is a recent film. You can see in the first review that consistency and how quality and enjoyable the
documentary is throughout can drastically decrease how good in his eyes the whole documentary is. Having a good ending is as important as an introduction and that is
something I will strive to have in my project keeping the consistency and enjoyability throughout the whole project.
The King:
Reviews
In this section I shall be going over existing products and amylase both positive and negative comments and see how I can use this information to add to my own project.
POSTIVE
Not too many reviews that I could find on this documentary, but most were positive including this one I am analysing. You can see he appreciates Ronnie and how much he put into
his training and his professional side how he was so dedicated to his goal. I like how he adds that he likes both his compassion in his professional and personal side, as this helps
understand him more and see him for who he truly is, and you can connect with him even if he's an 8-time Mr Olympia champion. This further backs my ongoing research on how
showing multiple sides of someone makes them more likeable.
NEGATIVE
With the negative comment by James O, he doesn’t like the pace of the documentary, and I agree it is slow and that may decrease how enjoyable it is too many people, especially if
you aren't mesmerised by the legacy of Ronnie Coleman. This is something I am going to have to work on, keeping a fast-paced exciting documentary as this is what the people and
myself want. He also prefers when there is a clear point of the documentary, and he would probably prefer having it be about his golden era of body building when he competed
rather than the injured and rugid man he is today. Having a clear point and purpose to my documentary is a necessity and is soemthing I will be dedicated to have.
Posters
• For posters I would like some good
picture of me doing some exercise trying
my hardest, and I will make it black and
white with red writing. I think the black
and white as this is a classic with
bodybuilding photos with Arnold and so
on. I will use the red caption where the
title of my documentary because I think
red is bold and really catches the eye,
especially on a black and white
background.
Category Trends
Reddit
Something that gets transformation videos so popular is
if the transformation looks ‘unnatural’ so I'm thinking to
get some really bad pictures of me when I was younger
and saying it was a year transformation. This is a common
trend in the bodybuilding community to lie about the
duration it took to do the transformation to make it look
more impressive. As you can see on this online forum
people are obsessed if someone is natty (natural) or
enhanced, so if I make the transformation look crazy it’ll
make the whole video look impressive.
• Before and after photos
• Using good lighting on the after photos compared to

• The timescale
• Montage of pictures and videos

Misguidance
There has been a lot of misguidance on
bulking by various content creators, in this
case Greg Doucette. This misguidance can
be detrimental to peoples weightlifting
journey and can set people back years as
you can see. In my video I will set this
straight, and I will tell it as it is with you
have to bulk to get big, it's just how it is.
Structure
• For this I will be analysing Dylan McKnight's 18-20 transformation as this is very similar style to what I want to do. I will also try to apply this to my project.
• 0-10 seconds it opens with a really dramatic opening line that hooks you in. This is something I want to replicate as I feel like it is really important to have a
good opening as that what makes someone continue watching.
• 11-33 seconds he shows before he started going gym with the occasional shot of him now, I think I would keep the shots of me now for the dramatic reveal, but I
don’t think this being included ruins anything. He also layers this with a dramatic voiceover from a friend talking about his dedication to whatever he does. I really
like this as it adds a lot of information about him and also makes everything more dramatic and exciting, definitely will use something similar near the start of my
project.
• He doesn’t really have much bits where he is talking directly to the camera or any interviews this is something I will include in the middle section.
• 2 minute onwards he shows his body changing from video to video, he occasionally uses subtitles to add dramatic effect and also narration, I think this is a bit lazy
and personally I would use an actual voice as it is more entertaining and you relate more to the person hearing their voice, it also works for my participatory style I
am going for.
• He then adds a really dramatic song, this is good and something I will do for parts of mine, as I feel it adds good story telling and also moves the narrative.
Music
Will I use copy right music or not?
• I had quite a big think about this topic. Although on one hand, I do
believe, if I send this somewhere professionally, I will need my music
to not be copyrighted. On the other hand, I do think I would prefer
just to keep this project for this project. The video I am planning, is
not something you would see at a film festival. It’s a more Personal
web-based documentary, in a YouTube style format. It's based on the
content I watch, and something I would like to do In the future. I think
just using songs regardless of copyright, is what I will do. Whatever
fits the best with the scene is what I will choose.
Music- King Kunta by Kendrick Lamar
I'm researching music for 2 types of areas of my
video. 1 introduction, something very high energy
and quick to get the attention. And secondly some
motivating, inspiring, and maybe dramatic type
music that would fit a montage or transformation
section. The way this would work is for number 2 as
this starts normal and then it has a slight pause and
essentially there is a beat drop and I think that
could really work for a transformation. However I
think more energy is needed for this section. More
research Is needed.
Music-Otis by Jay Z and
Kanye west • A song I could use for an
introduction. I really like the
transition from Otis’s voice
to Jay Z’s rap style and I think
it could really be a quite a
powerful start to my
documentary. Even over a
workout montage it could
work. Otis Readings voice
could work with anything. If I
don’t use this song, it will be
definitely some kind Kanye
West song, because I think
for montages it fits too well.
Music-Alright by
Kendrick Lamar
• 0-19 of the introduction to this
song is very impactful and would
definitely be used for an
introduction. At this moment
this song is my favourite for a
introduction as I can already
visualise what it would look like
with the title coming in and the
song stopping.
Music- The passion by Jaden
• I'm definitely now considering to include some type of
rap song into my documentary for a brief snippet. I think
this works with my target audience because most males
who go to the gym listen to rap as it can also show to
help having a high temping song can bring your
heartbeat up giving you more energy. For this next
possible song it’s a rap type song and its high energy
and I feel like it would work really well for both sections
I’m looking for.
• What is the best music to workout to? More than 100
years of research reveals 5 benefits (inverse.com)
Music- Goku by
Jaden
• Goku is a rap song by Jaden, and I would use it for a montage portion of the
documentary. It’s extremely fast paced and high energy and would fit
perfectly for this section. I don’t think that the song has a bit of Asian
influence be a problem as I think it doesn’t define the song. The lyrics also
have relevance to the documentary as the lyrics “I feel like I'm Goku” can be
interpretated as feeling strong or powerful.

a lot, Zyzz is a bodybuilder who has a cult
following since his death in 2011. Personally
for me this song is a bit cheesy and I would
prefer to use more original music even if it is
a common song used in the type of video
I'm making.
Audience Research
Survey Planning
• For my survey planning I want to get information on many areas but mainly
those that I'm particularly curious about. I'm not bothered about age
specifics; however, my target audience will be either people who are into
physical fitness or are interested in getting into it.
• Video aesthetics
• Timings (intro etc)
• More specific questions like, would you like in depth explanations on diet,
rest and workout routines etc.
I will be getting a mix of personal and random people to respond on my
survey. I’m hoping to get a variety of opinions so I can develop my project so
I can enjoy what I've made, as well as my target audience.
Where I've sent the survey
I put the survey on social
media through both my story
and sending it to people who I
thought would be interested
individually. My story was
viewed by nearly 150 however
I specified on the post only to
do it if you're interested in
bodybuilding to get more
targeted responses to my
planned target audience.
Survey results
HOW LONG SHOULD A INTRODUCTION BE?
Starting with question 1, I asked how long an intro
should be? I added this question because an
introduction is something I had some peer
positives and negatives from last project and I
normally do about 10-20 seconds as my
introduction .The research I found from this was
that 50% o people prefer a quite short 5-10 second
introduction. I quite like this as I like my edits quick
as I think it helps with entertainment over a long
time. I think this really helps with my later project
as I can now base my introduction timings on this
feedback.
HOW LONG SHOULD A YOUTUBE DOCUMENTARY BE?
Second question I asked how long my documentary should be. I
specified ‘Youtube’ documentary as I’ve identified that is the style
of documentary I am taking. It seems most people like the higher
end of the options given, with a 10-15 minute duration. This is
what I prefer as I normally have to shorten my projects, taking out
stuff I would prefer to keep in. This will still be a hard task to
accomplish as if the project is longer it can sometimes reduce in
quality so I will try my best not to let that happen.
Survey results
HOW IN DEPTH SHOULD FOOTAGE/EXAMPLES BE?
For question three I asked how in depth
footage/examples should be. 50% said 30 seconds
and 40% said 1 minute. I also agree footage
examples should be short with 30 seconds being my
most favourable time duration. I think I'm getting
that sections of the video should be short as that is
what the overall feedback says.
WOULD A VOICOVER OF WHAT I’M DOING AND
TECHNIQUE BE HELPFUL OVER FOOTAGE?
I would’ve done a voiceover regardless of this question,
however knowing that people would like that is helpful.
The information I find in this which is the most
interesting is that a lot of people want not too much
voiceover. I agree with this, and I think adding
interviews will help keeping this fresh so it's not just
one voice the whole time.
Survey results
WOULD SHOWING FOOD PREP, RECIPES AND CALORIE
TRACKING BE HELPFUL?
Onto question 5, I asked would showing food
preparation, recipes and calorie tracking be
helpful? I'm glad people said yes as I am hoping
large portions of my video will have this in. There
is a lot I can talk about when it comes to
everything I listed there as I am very interested
about it so lots of possible content can be filmed
around these topics.
Do you like visually aesthetic content?
I think this was a fairly obvious response
however a big change to my documentary this
time will be trying to make the video to be
more aesthetic as I think it's nice to look at
while watching. It's good to have this feedback
as I think I'll need the motivation when I'm
taking ages editing.
Survey results WOULD A BRIEF TIMETABLE OF
WORKOUTS AND WHEN TO HAVE REST
DAYS BE HELPFUL?
I'm happy with this response, I think there's a of of
negligence when it comes to both workout
routines and rest days. Some people have the
mindset of ‘I'll take a rest day when I’m dead’. This is
unhealthy and can often lead to fatality. There was a
personal trainer called Scott Murray who died recently
from having this same ideology, so I think it's good to
talk about this.
As you can see this topic is popular with the audience
which is good for my product as I don’t want to add
something that won't be interesting to people.
WOULD AN EXPLANATION OF HOW BULKING
AND DIET CAN BE EFFECTIVE?
Survey Monkey
ARE YOU INTERESTED ON THE EFFECTS OF THE GYM AND
WORKING OUT PHYSICALLY AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY?
It's good that yes was the answer for this as
I think there's a lot of things you can talk
about that goes untold. I’m going to do a lot
of research so I can get the best possible
information for these topics.
DO YOU FIND SINCE WORKING OUT
IT HAS IMPROVED YOUR MENTALITY?
This is probably the most beneficial
piece of research I got from this as its
actual evidence of how it does affect
people's mental health and I could
even use it as part of my video.
In person interview question ideas
• What are some topics you would like to be seen/included in my
documentary?
• Do you often find the concept of bulking and cutting confusing, and
how do people confuse you when explaining it?
• Are there any topics in bodybuilding that come up more often than
necessary?
• Would you say the gym has changed your life? If so, say why.
In person interview 1
Felix Huntington, 17
How has the gym changed your life?
"I feel now since I have started going to the gym I feel more confident in myself because I look bigger and also people start noticing
and praise is always nice. I also before I started going I lacked passion and a purpose and it has help me identify a sense of identity
and community. I have made friends from the gym and I am much happier because of this change in my life."
Do you think there are health benefits to starting working out?
"Obviously there are known benefits it can have on your heart and fitness and stuff Jay, but not to many people know about how it
effects your mental health and I think that’s an underrated part of it."
How much do you know about the best scientific ways to diet and train?
"Just the basics I haven’t actually tried to research a lot of the science behind what the best stuff is to eat or the
best exercises and what not, so if that information was easy to access that would be very helpful man."
In person interview 2
Lucy combes, 17
Do you think going to the gym has affected your mentality?
Yes, before I didn’t view myself positively and going to the gym gave me confidence. Social confidence to be in a room of people I would
have avoided just a few months ago. Self-confidence to go myself and feel strong and independent. And body confident as I feel stronger,
and I feel confident in my skin increasingly more often at the gym wearing clothes a few months ago I would never have worn around people
unless there was a big oversized hoodie hiding me.
Would you say the gym has changed your life in any way of so how?
Yes I would say it has definitely changed my life. Before I have struggled with body and self-image and thought the only way to feel
comfortable and love myself was to harm or starve my body. However ,since going to the gym I’ve learnt to appreciate what I have, and I feel
beautiful and confident. I love feeling strong knowing that I’ve put work in and am becoming healthier.
Would you recommend the gym to anyone else?
Definitely, it’s not about getting skinnier or bigger it’s also about getting a healthier body and mind. You often find people start going to the
gym at difficult times in their lives or when they are unhappy within themselves. And you often find that they say that the gym helped them
through it. It gives you something to focus on and achieve making you feel accomplishment and proud of yourself. It strengthens your mind
and your body. I think what puts people off is the view the view that everyone in them has a particular aesthetic and if you don’t have it or are
new they will judge you. However, you often find they are lovely and will talk to you and help and you’ll feel a lot more included than you
think. Having taken someone there myself they ring me up and tell me what they did that day, and you can tell that they are proud and feel
better in themselves. So yes, I would recommend the gym.
In person interview analysis
These interviews were conducted differently with the interviewee
having a say in the questions as I wanted them to be happy with
what they were saying.
From both of these interviews there is a lot of positivity about the
benefits of working out and how it changed their life through
change in their body making them feel confident or just the ability
to start feeling strong within yourself and in actual strength. I
think both interviewees could do with some guidance still on diet
and training so that’s when my video comes in.
Topics I may need to do research on
• Creatine
• Training frequency
• How hard you should train
• best scientific backed exercises
• Benefits of bulking
Creatine
BACKGROUND
Creatine is one of the most popular nutritional ergogenic aids for athletes. Studies have consistently
shown that creatine supplementation increases intramuscular creatine concentrations, can improve
exercise performance, and/or improve training adaptations. Research has indicated that creatine
supplementation may enhance post-exercise recovery, injury prevention, thermoregulation,
rehabilitation, and concussion and/or spinal cord neuroprotection. A number of clinical applications
of creatine supplementation have also been studied involving neurodegenerative diseases (e.g.,
muscular dystrophy, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease), diabetes, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, aging,
brain and heart ischemia, adolescent depression, and pregnancy. The purpose of this review is to
provide an update to the current literature regarding the role and safety of creatine supplementation
in exercise, sport, and medicine and to update the position stand of International Society of Sports
Nutrition (ISSN) related to creatine supplementation. Creatine supplementation can help athletes
recover from intense training.
WHAT IS CREATINE?
Creatine is a organic compound often found in many of the
foods we consume (primarily red meats and seafood). You
can also get creatine in powder or pill form. Creatine is one
of the most researched sport substances in the world and
many studies have found muscle building benefits and
even health benefits. ‘In a normal diet that contains 1–
2 g/day of creatine, muscle creatine stores are about 60–
80% saturated. The most effective way to increase muscle
creatine stores is to ingest 5 g of creatine monohydrate (or
approximately 0.3 g/kg body weight).’
Conclusion
Creatine monohydrate remains one of the few nutritional supplements for which research has
consistently shown has ergogenic benefits. Additionally, a number of potential health benefits
have been reported from creatine supplementation. Comments and public policy related to
creatine supplementation should be based on careful assessment of the scientific evidence
from well-controlled clinical trials; not unsubstantiated anecdotal reports, misinformation
published on the Internet, and/or poorly designed surveys that only perpetuate myths about
creatine supplementation. Given all the known benefits and favourable safety profile of
creatine supplementation reported in the scientific and medical literature, it is the view of
ISSN that government legislatures and sport organizations who restrict and/or discourage use
of creatine may be placing athletes at greater risk—particularly in contact sports that have risk
of head trauma and/or neurological injury thereby opening themselves up to legal liability.
This includes children and adolescent athletes engaged in sport events that place them at risk
for head and/or spinal cord injury.
Arsene/Arsenal
Arsene ensured players ate the right meals before games but the
introduction of creatine was vital as it promotes muscle growth and
body strength which improves performance on the pitch. Typically
taken before training or a match, creatine also helps to increase
endurance and reduce fatigue.
Training frequency
• I feel that for beginners, full body workouts 3-4 times per week are most optimal.
This means that the volume is low as around 3-4 sets per body part are
performed, however the frequency is quite high. The muscles won’t be used to
any real stimulus or being stressed under load and so will be able to adapt from
fairly low volume. As the stress placed on the muscle won’t have been of high
intensity, the muscle will be able to recover quickly (even quicker if nutrition etc
is on point too), so high frequency is useful in this instance as we can train the
same muscle again as soon as it’s recovered.
• As you become more experienced, an upper/lower split is now more useful. In
this instance the upper body is trained one day (back, chest, shoulders, arms),
then on the next, lower body is trained (hamstrings, calves, quads, glutes), then
rest and repeat. This means that the volume is higher than the full body as the
workouts are split into two, but the frequency is slightly lower. This is due to your
body needing more of a stimulus to adapt to the stress put under it.
• After this, a push/pull/legs split comes in handy. This means that a push session
consists of chest, shoulders and triceps (any pushing movement), a pull session
would be back and biceps, possibly shoulders and then the third session, legs,
would be essentially the same as a ‘lower’ session in an upper/lower training
split. Again, this means that as the body adapts to more and more stimulus,
results are most likely going to slow after a while (one to two years), and more
volume is needed. As more volume is added, frequency must be lowered
otherwise recovery will ultimately start to suffer.
Calorie surplus
• Calorie Surplus: This means that you are consuming more
calories in total throughout the day than your body is using. For
example; if your body burns 2,000 calories throughout the day
and you consume 2,200 calories, you will be in a 200 calorie
surplus by the end of the day. Doing this consistently day after
day will lead to weight gain.
Food data
Clothing merchandise research
Personally, I find more simplistic more appealing. This seems to be how
the gym community also like things. With whites, blacks and reds being
the most common variable. They don’t usually have any fancy patterns
or designs, just a hardcore looking font for the title of whatever the
brand is and that is it. I am also looking tank tops as well as t shirts.
This will give me merchandise a uniqueness as I don't think they are
that common to come across and is a classic gym-oriented item which
relates with my project theme. I will most likely do these designs for
my presentation area of work.
My own research
I went into my local gym around 5pm, and I did a quick tally of how
many people wore clothing like the ones I have mentioned and 15/27
people wore this type of outfit. This gives me confidence that my
research was a success.
My documentary is like...
• My documentary style will be a web based, YouTube style video. This
is what from my research I have concluded. I intend not to make it like
the conventional documentary you would see on Netflix or the BBC.
My biggest inspirations have come from my existing products, there I
have come to the agreement this is the style I will be undertaking in
hope to making something I am truly proud with. Furthermore, I want
to make something personal and enjoyable for me to do. This
ideology will ensure I am happy, committed and determined
throughout the whole project. I do believe doing this style may be
deemed as not serious enough for a distinction, but I do think that
would be an unfair assumption as this style is increasingly becoming
more prevalent within society of media In today's world.
Is YouTube now more popular than TV?
Why do I mention this?
Now coming to the realisation that a YouTube based video is what I will be taking inspiration from, it is now relevant to see if the
market is there, and why it may be more reason to do a YouTube style over a more conventional documentary style.
Opening statement
'YouTube is now more popular than traditional television in the United States, according to a new survey of 2,000 people from Adroit
Digital'. This is from a source called 'Social media today', they conducted a study which shows that there is a drastic increase of
YouTube watches than original Television viewers.
Why is this happening?
I believe this is happening for a number of reasons: attention spans are shorter; this is down to how quick media is
nowadays. You can see anything you want in the matter of seconds. All from the comfort of your bed on your phone.
Television shows and movies are out of touch, of course not all new shows and movies are like this, but a lot seem not
to resonate with the younger audiences anymore. They will be watching a movie and get bored halfway through;
depictions of young people are often far from the truth as well. Online media, is often made by the youth for the
youth, this is why they like it so much. It seems more real and genuine themselves.
Conclusion
The market seems to be bigger than ever for a online styled documentary, and I believe doing this style will not only
feel more natural for me, but also for my audience since this will be uploaded onto YouTube.

  • 2. Documentary Styles In 1991, Bill Nichols, American film critic and theoretician, proposed six documentary modes. Each mode contained its own specific characteristics. They have their own goals and require their own distinct documentary techniques. • Poetic: They are documentaries that seek to emphasise as much as possible their visual dimension. The images can provoke more sensations, affections, and impressions than necessarily transmit an argument or build a clear narrative about the historical world. • Expository: In the expository way of representing reality, the documentary filmmaker aspires to give the impression of objectivity (always remembering that this total objectivity is an impossibility). • Observational: Observational documentaries attempt to discover the ultimate truth of their subject by acting as a fly-on-the-wall—in other words, observing the subject’s real-life without interrupting. This style of documentary embraces the cinema verité movement. Cinematographers are often asked to be as unobtrusive as possible. This is to capture their subjects in a raw, unguarded state. • Performative: Performative documentaries centre on the filmmaker’s interaction with his or her subject, using the filmmaker’s personal experience or relationship with the topic as a springboard for delving into wider, subjective realities about politics, history, or groups of people. The cinematographer is often asked to capture the production process as well as intimate footage that depicts the filmmaker’s personal interaction with the subject. • Participatory: The participatory documentary aims to show that the truth of an interview is the truth of the encounter between who is filming and who is being filmed. Thus, the participatory method is the opposite of the observational mode. What are Documentary Modes? Theory Explained - So The Theory Goes
  • 3. What Documentary Style will I be doing? • I will be doing a participatory style documentary. This is due to the filmmaker being included in the film's narrative and directly interacts with the film's subjects, as my documentary is about me and I will be in my documentary and be the auteur of my project. I like this style as it provides more of a connection between the viewer and the filmmaker themselves. This is specifically going to be beneficial as I aim to make the viewer feel motivated as a direct consequence of seeing my success. My hope is that this makes the audience and myself more aligned. • I am planning to appear in my project as the documentary will revolve around my story, I will be heard asking interviewees questions which wont be edited out, this establishes a relationship between the viewer and the filmmaker. It also gives a behind the seen feel and that makes the audience relate, as you can see how they went about making the documentary. • I will research different existing participatory style documentaries in hope I can add tones and features to my own project. • I will have aspects similar to observational as whoever is filming me won't be interacting with the documentary but me infront of the camera will. However, unlike observational when I am behind the camera or asking interview questions I will be interacting.
  • 4. Participatory Style Explanation ‘Participatory documentary is a subgenre of documentary filmmaking in which the filmmaker is included in the film's narrative and directly interacts with the film's subjects. In this type of documentary form, the filmmaker may appear in front of the camera during an interview, be heard as voiceover behind the camera, and can even appear on camera without any other subjects. The effect of the filmmaker's presence may be minimal, or it may be a major influence on the narrative.’ ‘The participatory mode of documentary filmmaking stands in contrast to the observational documentary film, in which the director acts as a fly on the wall, observing the world around them without interacting with it.’ Characteristics of Participatory ‘The filmmaker is a character. In a participatory documentary, the filmmaker must either be seen or heard at some point in the movie, giving them a presence that is often as important as the primary subject. The interviewer’s questions are included in the edit. In other documentary genres, subjects answer interview questions, but the questions themselves are edited out. In the participatory mode, the audience is allowed to see or hear the filmmaker asking the questions. This establishes a clearer relationship between the filmmaker and the interview subject, while also giving the viewer a more "behind the scenes" look at how the filmmaker elicited the subject's responses. The viewer is aligned with the filmmaker. The audience experiences the film through the filmmaker's point of view, allowing them to intuit how the filmmaker felt in the moment and consider how they might have reacted in the same situation.’ Guide to Participatory Mode: 3 Participatory Documentaries - 2022 - MasterClass
  • 5. How these techniques will help me • I like this as it affects my idea and how I will go about making this project. Participatory makes me more involved with the project as I am in the scenes, and I will interact with the films subjects as they are about me. 'the filmmaker may appear in front of the camera during an interview, be heard as voiceover behind the camera, and can even appear on camera without any other subjects', I will be doing all these things as I am planning on being a major presence in my documentary, I will be the main character within the documentary. You see this style in many documentaries about famous people. Two that spring to mind is Ronnie Coleman: The King and Kanye Wests 'Jeen-Yuhs'. These two is basically following around and going into the life of these two people. I don’t want the documentary to come off as self-obsessed which is a common misconception of bodybuilding. When I ask a question in an interview, I would like my voice to be heard asking it, this is a commonly used in Participatory documentary's. I like this being in there because it will give more of a connection between the audience and me. I want the viewer and me to be very close throughout the whole documentary and to feel like they know me, which is what I thought especially when watching 'Jeen-Yuhs'. I am going to research in more depth both Jeen-Yuhs and The King so I can get a fuller understanding of a Participatory Documentary. I will also research about Dylan Mcknight as his documentary has a similar subject structure and is a participatory documentary.
  • 7. Joe Fazer Joe Fazer Information Joe is a youtuber who came has nearly 1 million subscribers to his channel. He became famous for his transformation videos and these type of videos have inspired me to do some research on this type of content of videos in which he does. 2 Year Body Transformation From Skinny To Muscular My thoughts The way this video is made is not what I want my video to be alone, I want to maybe get a portion similar to this product he's made but shorten it down into the documentary. This video is more of a montage of videos and photos and there's not that much more to it; whereas I want my documentary to have more in depth conversation of what and how I did the transformation. He starts with captions to structure his videos; in my video I will use voiceover instead of the captions as the main way of structure to my project. He uses a lot of montages; this is a style I may use but as my project isa documentary I won't rely on this being the bulk of my video rather it being a section of the video. The music he uses is very motivational and this is a common trope of transformation videos, this is something I will be going into more depth later in my research.
  • 8. Joe Fazer audience profile Age demographic • Joe Fazer's audience is mostly young with ages of young teens to early 20s. I have based this claim on the type of videos he creates as he runs a series called ‘skinny kid bulking up’. Most of his videos are trying to help young people who were like him, ‘bulk up’. I think this is why he is so popular. As like so many young men, or children, Joe Fazer was very skinny and wanted to gain size, so people can really relate to his experience. I do think older people who just like bodybuilding/working out as the sport itself can enjoy his content, but it would be harder to gain a connection with the content as why would they want advice from someone new to bodybuilding and someone who is still a child. Gender demographic I think its easy to presume males are his number one fans, because of his advice being from a male himself and his tips being somewhat tailored for men but I had to find evidence for this so I scanned through his comments. I struggled to find any female commentors whatsoever, and all the videos based on him from other creators are from the male gender. In my opinion the research I have conducted I think its clear to see that not many females if any watch Joe Fazer on a regular occurrence.
  • 9. Chris Bumstead Chris Bumstead information Christopher Adam Bumstead is a Canadian IFBB professional bodybuilder. Bumstead is the reigning Mr. Olympia Classic Physique winner, having won the competition in 2019, 2020 and 2021. He was also the runner-up in 2017 and 2018- Wikipedia FULL DAY OF EATING | BULKING EDITION My thoughts Chris Bumstead here in this video goes through what he consumes, food and supplement wise. The way he talks reasonably laid back in a colloquial and in an informal manor is something I will include in my project. Additionally, I aim to use, like Chris Bumstead, field specific lexis. These are words and vocabulary specific to a particular profession or group of people engaged in the same/similar activity. In my case and Chris' this is bodybuilding. I think including this in my video fits really well with the type of content which I want including in my project.
  • 10. Chris Bumstead Audience Profile Age demographic • Chris Bumstead is seen as a god and role model across all ends of the age spectrum across the weightlifting community. He is seen as what the peak of the sport is. He is the Messi or Ronaldo of his sport. I have based this on my own beliefs and my friends, but I have also seen countless videos of men idolising Chris. This praise comes from all ages as younger people like him for being an inspiration, a role model, whereas older people respect him for his achievements and his body. Gender demographic • Again like Joe Fazer, Chris Bumstead’s audience is mainly if not all men; this is due to him being so influential in ‘men's bodybuilding’. Girls don’t want advice from a man on how he got that big as for women's body building the requirements for what looks good are very different. Men mostly want to get as big muscles as possible whereas girls focus a lot on lower body rather than a big frame. For evidence of this claim there is plenty of videos of men taking inspiration from Chris doing the same thing he did. All the clothing Chris sells are in men fits meaning his target audience is men so why would he sell girl clothes if not many girls will even be interested in his content. All the commentors on his videos are also guys, giving me more indication that the gender demographic for Chris Bumstead is males. (Pretending to be him)
  • 11. Dylan Mcknight Dylan Mcknight Information Dylan Mcknight is a youtuber who became famous for his flipping and mainly gym-oriented videos. His breakout video was a transformation video ‘Dylan McKnight 2 Year Natural Transformation 18-20’ which got him very popular as the transformation was reviewed by many as exceptional and inspirational. Dylan McKnight 2 Year Natural Transformation 18-20-Documentary My thoughts This video is a documentary in a (participatory style) as he uses his own narration as well as featuring in the documentary. The opening few moments is a black screen with Dylan's voice saying, “what could you be if you dedicated your entire being to one thing” “let me show you”. In my opinion that’s a very good opening, near perfect. It makes me personally very 'pumped up' and excited to see the rest of the video, it’s the hook essentially. I want the same feeling he created for this opening for mine however I don’t want the black screen opening. I'm thinking more like a slow-motion clip or a clip that the viewer will see later bit a snippet version, like a teaser. Music I admire his use of music in this documentary and how it affects mood, tone and storytelling. He uses a remix of Mr sandman by a talented artist called SYML. Mood As soon as the music hits the mood is changed to dramatic and inspiring. I think this is important to not only a documentary but especially to a bodybuilding documentary which in my opinion is to inspire other people to work out like he did. This mood is something I'm looking to replicate in my work as I think it enhances how engaged the viewer is in the film. Dramatic things are usually more entertaining, and it really gets the viewer hooked because they want to see the outcome. Inspiring is one of my main goals of my whole project and I think if you inspire someone with your work that has the biggest lasting effect after the watch than anything you can do. Tone If say a happy upbeat song was used the tone would be completely different and worse, the song they’ve picked is very emotive and it will take a lot of research of music to find something to replicate this tone. Storry telling Using this remix of Mr Sandman paints a picture of overcoming struggles and it really complements the footage shown. Without the music we would be left staring at slow-motion footage of two people working out. For my project I want the music to be used for a purpose either to add to the storytelling, tone or mood.
  • 12. Dylan McKnight Audience Profile Age demographic Dylan Mcknight resonates with a lot of young people as a lot of young adults and teens dream of achieving a dream physic like he did within a year timespan. This idolisation has given Dylan an age demographic of 12–25-year-olds. Even older people can admire his content however I have based his age demographic off himself being a young guy (21 years old) and also his content being centred around people who need help at the start of their weightlifting journey; which is normally younger people. Gender demographic Dylan McKnight's Gender demographic is almost definitely majority male, as his humour is stereotypically male type jokes. He competes in Men's bodybuilding so he will get a lot males knowing him from this as I think when it comes to bodybuilding you usually are more interested in the shows from your gender as this is the same for any sport. All male commentors on his videos which has been a trend in identifying the gender demographic in these influences thus far.
  • 13. Sneako COLOUR AND EDITING Sneako’s video editing style is something I will be taking heavy influence from. Here you can see he is colour correcting his video to be green for this part of the video and his hand drawn caption also colour coordinates. I really like this style for the colours as it makes the whole video different and adds to the entertainment of the video. He also distorts his image and changes his colour on his image, I’ve done similar things to this before so it shouldn’t be too hard to replicate but I want to make the effect subtle like his is. I am going to test out while doing my voiceover I will film myself and try and recreate the styles you see above. He also uses this drawing editing style which I'm going to require more research for. SNEAKO INFORMATION SNEAKO started out uploading videos of gameplay and giving commentary of video games, before switching to a style best described as commentary and motivational, with many different topics relating to life. He is most famous for his video "Would You Say the N Word for 1 Dollar" where he went around doing a street interview to random strangers and asking them if they would say the n word if he paid them $1. He would conduct similar videos like this like "Is It Okay To Be Fat" and "Why Men and Women Aren't Equal“. SNEAKO | Wikitubia | Fandom MUSIC TRANSITIONS Sneako uses music to transition his videos, he normally uses these in opening sequences or closing sequences, but sometimes uses them in different part of his video in kind of a quickfire montage. I like this and am interested about including it into my video. (1) The Death of Empathy - YouTube (1) I Dropped Out to Make Youtube Videos - YouTube
  • 14. Sneako audience profile Age demographic Sneako is a 23-year-old university drop out, which is something the older generation stereotypically says not to do; it is increasingly becoming more popular to drop out of education to persue your dreams and even more of a trend to follow your passion in the social media industry. This decision as well as his humour of old people and perceived childish remarks have given Sneako a huge following in the youth. Hes a young man with an outspoken and sometimes controversial voice, which can put off some older closed- minded people whereas younger people tend to be open free-thinking people. The language he tends to use are words that are used by the youth of today and can normally not be understood or disregarded by the older generation. These reasons are why I have concluded that Sneako's target audience is somewhere in between 12-30. Gender demographic For Sneako's gender demographic, I can see why women would not like him as he is perceived as a 'player' or arrogant but if you look past that he just makes really nice content for anyone. There are more evidence for his demographic to be more male focused as he does use terminology that women may find offensive. As being a fan myself I have seen many videos where he is doing public interviews where I can see literal hatred in the eyes of women when interacting with women and for men this is most likely amusing. Hes also aware that women tend to hate him with his upload on January 23rd, 2019, titled 'The reason all women hate me. YouTube is also predominantly a man dominated app as two studies conducted in 2020 and 2022 found that more men watch YouTube compared to women. This is why I have concluded that Sneako's gender demographic is male.
  • 15. Sneako’s scribble effect After looking back at my contextual I stated that I would research about the scribble effect. I had already planned to look at a video but realised after I started to do research how to do the effect, I found it was on aftereffects. So, I think it would just be easier on premier pro; for this I would have to use a app on a phone or iPad but I have high hopes for this. This explanation was also a lot simpler than the other ones I looked at, as this duration was only 2 minutes. Design I like By sneako
  • 16. The King and Jeen-Yuhs: what did I learn? Introduction To start off both these documentary's are 'fly on the wall documentary's' which is not technically participatory but say if they had done some work behind the scenes it would be participatory. That’s where it is a tricky line between observational and participatory. For the sake of this I am going to imagine they are participatory as I don’t think it will benefit my research journey trying to only research participatory documentaries as most documentary's I have seen have blurred the lines between each style anyway. There are many aspects I can take from these two films. What did I learn I like how both these documentaries show the jobs of both men and how dedicated they are with their careers but still got there human side. This creates a close connection with the audience as you see the people as three dimensional I think how they do this is showing there sweet side as Kanye West with his mother Donda and Ronnie Coleman with his kids and It helps contrast this larger than life narrative and really makes them as a human seem relatable . I will use this as one I think the viewer will be much more invested in the documentary having the main character seem real and just like everyone else and two because it will also inspire other people that they can start there bodybuilding journey too. I have stated this as one of my biggest goals previously in my work. Inspiring is also a big common trend within transformation videos as there are countless people who have started their journey watching Joe Fazer's transformation, or Dylan Mcknights for example.
  • 17. Jeen Yuhs Audience Profile Age demographic On the right I have an IMDB rating by demographic table. As you can see the primary age demographic Is in the 18-29 range as this got the highest score. I have got to agree with this as you get the newer Kanye fans and ones that know him from his Chicago days in the older bit of that age range. You also have to include that Kanye Wests primary target audience is aged between 16-24. Kanye Wests music is very out there and includes topics like profanity and sexuality that older people may not like to hear. In conclusion I think with having two pieces of evidence on Kanye Wests age demographic being between 18-24 but I also have to use my common sense and say that I (17) and many of my friends who are younger than me listen to him. The age rating is also a 15 so it's safe to assume that 15-year-olds listen to him. It's also safe to assume that people 45+ may not like his music as my previous statements have said. In my opinion 15-45 is the age demographic for Jeen-Yuhs because younger than that are not allowed and may not like them slow style of a documentary. The older range after 29 is for people who know him from his Chicago days or even like his music because even Kanye is 44 years old now so some of his audience will be that age. 30-44 also has the most reviews on with 1,347 compared to the next highest 948. My estimate is an age of 15-45 for the demographic. Gender demographic For the gender demographic the majority of the votes are from men 2819 whereas women have 351. The men's reviews are also more positive having a 8.2 rather than a 7.8 from females. Kanye West is also a man meaning more men can relate to him easier because they share the same gender. Kanye West is in the rapper industry which is dominated by men. Nielsens 2015 audience data shows that men aged 18-24 listen to rap the most, which also backs up my age demographic and my gender demographic that men listen to hip hop the most. In conclusion with having more reviews and positive ones from men on Jeen Yuhs and the data that shows more men listen to Kanye and hip hop more than women I can conclude that men watch Jeen-yuhs the most.
  • 18. Ronnie Coleman: The king Audience Profile Age demographic Age demographic for The King is quite simple I think as most the reviews come from males 18-44 with a peak at 30-44nwith 1,611 compared to 18-29 with 487. I think this because younger people 18-29 know him through old videos and because he's a legend of the sport but may not know much about him so there's not loads of people interested in that age group, whereas 30-44 probably lived with him being the best at his peak. A report from IHRSA shows that 18-34 is the most popular followed by 35-54 is the most popular ages to go to the gym, and the documentary is based on bodybuilding so that also fits the 18-44 age range. In conclusion I think that 18-44 is the age demographic of The King. Gender demographic For gender you can see that only 91 women did reviews whereas men did 2,574. That is a crazy difference. For more evidence on why The Kings demographic is because Ronnie is a man competing in a men's competition, meaning men will relate more to him and idolise him. I am sure this also applies to women body builders for instance if there was a Denise Masino who is a women's bodybuilding pioneer, I'm sure her target audience will be majority women who are into bodybuilding. Bodybuilding is an industry dominated by men so there will be more men interested in this documentary. Ronnie Colemans physic is considered by a lot of women too big but for men he is a legend, women and men body build differently; for instance, women tend to build lower body mainly and look to tone rather than but on supraphysiological amounts of mass whereas men do. In conclusion I think my knowledge and evidence that I have stated implies a greater significance on the demographic being male as the primary demographic and female being secondary.
  • 19. Jeen-Yuhs: Reviews Click to add text In this section I shall be going over existing products and amylase both positive and negative comments and see how I can use this information to add to my own project. POSTIVE You can see in his review that he likes the style of documentary that the director went with. He appreciates how even though it shows his 'insane work ethic', you still get his well-rounded character ark with his 'heart-warming relationship with Donda', his mother. He ends his praise with the statement of 'I understand Kanye after this documentary'. This is an affect I want to have as I am showing how hard it is to do bodybuilding but also showing about what its like to be me as well. In conclusion this reinforces the research I have done previously on Jeen-Yuhs and especially how having a relatable character effects how the viewer enjoys the film. NEGATIVE These were the only negative ratings I could find as this documentary is a recent film. You can see in the first review that consistency and how quality and enjoyable the documentary is throughout can drastically decrease how good in his eyes the whole documentary is. Having a good ending is as important as an introduction and that is something I will strive to have in my project keeping the consistency and enjoyability throughout the whole project.
  • 20. The King: Reviews In this section I shall be going over existing products and amylase both positive and negative comments and see how I can use this information to add to my own project. POSTIVE Not too many reviews that I could find on this documentary, but most were positive including this one I am analysing. You can see he appreciates Ronnie and how much he put into his training and his professional side how he was so dedicated to his goal. I like how he adds that he likes both his compassion in his professional and personal side, as this helps understand him more and see him for who he truly is, and you can connect with him even if he's an 8-time Mr Olympia champion. This further backs my ongoing research on how showing multiple sides of someone makes them more likeable. NEGATIVE With the negative comment by James O, he doesn’t like the pace of the documentary, and I agree it is slow and that may decrease how enjoyable it is too many people, especially if you aren't mesmerised by the legacy of Ronnie Coleman. This is something I am going to have to work on, keeping a fast-paced exciting documentary as this is what the people and myself want. He also prefers when there is a clear point of the documentary, and he would probably prefer having it be about his golden era of body building when he competed rather than the injured and rugid man he is today. Having a clear point and purpose to my documentary is a necessity and is soemthing I will be dedicated to have.
  • 21. Posters • For posters I would like some good picture of me doing some exercise trying my hardest, and I will make it black and white with red writing. I think the black and white as this is a classic with bodybuilding photos with Arnold and so on. I will use the red caption where the title of my documentary because I think red is bold and really catches the eye, especially on a black and white background.
  • 22. Category Trends Reddit Something that gets transformation videos so popular is if the transformation looks ‘unnatural’ so I'm thinking to get some really bad pictures of me when I was younger and saying it was a year transformation. This is a common trend in the bodybuilding community to lie about the duration it took to do the transformation to make it look more impressive. As you can see on this online forum people are obsessed if someone is natty (natural) or enhanced, so if I make the transformation look crazy it’ll make the whole video look impressive. • Before and after photos • Using good lighting on the after photos compared to bad lighting on the before • The timescale • Montage of pictures and videos • Dramatic music
  • 23. Misguidance There has been a lot of misguidance on bulking by various content creators, in this case Greg Doucette. This misguidance can be detrimental to peoples weightlifting journey and can set people back years as you can see. In my video I will set this straight, and I will tell it as it is with you have to bulk to get big, it's just how it is.
  • 24. Structure • For this I will be analysing Dylan McKnight's 18-20 transformation as this is very similar style to what I want to do. I will also try to apply this to my project. • 0-10 seconds it opens with a really dramatic opening line that hooks you in. This is something I want to replicate as I feel like it is really important to have a good opening as that what makes someone continue watching. • 11-33 seconds he shows before he started going gym with the occasional shot of him now, I think I would keep the shots of me now for the dramatic reveal, but I don’t think this being included ruins anything. He also layers this with a dramatic voiceover from a friend talking about his dedication to whatever he does. I really like this as it adds a lot of information about him and also makes everything more dramatic and exciting, definitely will use something similar near the start of my project. • He doesn’t really have much bits where he is talking directly to the camera or any interviews this is something I will include in the middle section. • 2 minute onwards he shows his body changing from video to video, he occasionally uses subtitles to add dramatic effect and also narration, I think this is a bit lazy and personally I would use an actual voice as it is more entertaining and you relate more to the person hearing their voice, it also works for my participatory style I am going for. • He then adds a really dramatic song, this is good and something I will do for parts of mine, as I feel it adds good story telling and also moves the narrative.
  • 25. Music
  • 26. Will I use copy right music or not? • I had quite a big think about this topic. Although on one hand, I do believe, if I send this somewhere professionally, I will need my music to not be copyrighted. On the other hand, I do think I would prefer just to keep this project for this project. The video I am planning, is not something you would see at a film festival. It’s a more Personal web-based documentary, in a YouTube style format. It's based on the content I watch, and something I would like to do In the future. I think just using songs regardless of copyright, is what I will do. Whatever fits the best with the scene is what I will choose.
  • 27. Music- King Kunta by Kendrick Lamar I'm researching music for 2 types of areas of my video. 1 introduction, something very high energy and quick to get the attention. And secondly some motivating, inspiring, and maybe dramatic type music that would fit a montage or transformation section. The way this would work is for number 2 as this starts normal and then it has a slight pause and essentially there is a beat drop and I think that could really work for a transformation. However I think more energy is needed for this section. More research Is needed.
  • 28. Music-Otis by Jay Z and Kanye west • A song I could use for an introduction. I really like the transition from Otis’s voice to Jay Z’s rap style and I think it could really be a quite a powerful start to my documentary. Even over a workout montage it could work. Otis Readings voice could work with anything. If I don’t use this song, it will be definitely some kind Kanye West song, because I think for montages it fits too well.
  • 29. Music-Alright by Kendrick Lamar • 0-19 of the introduction to this song is very impactful and would definitely be used for an introduction. At this moment this song is my favourite for a introduction as I can already visualise what it would look like with the title coming in and the song stopping.
  • 30. Music- The passion by Jaden • I'm definitely now considering to include some type of rap song into my documentary for a brief snippet. I think this works with my target audience because most males who go to the gym listen to rap as it can also show to help having a high temping song can bring your heartbeat up giving you more energy. For this next possible song it’s a rap type song and its high energy and I feel like it would work really well for both sections I’m looking for. • What is the best music to workout to? More than 100 years of research reveals 5 benefits (inverse.com)
  • 31. Music- Goku by Jaden • Goku is a rap song by Jaden, and I would use it for a montage portion of the documentary. It’s extremely fast paced and high energy and would fit perfectly for this section. I don’t think that the song has a bit of Asian influence be a problem as I think it doesn’t define the song. The lyrics also have relevance to the documentary as the lyrics “I feel like I'm Goku” can be interpretated as feeling strong or powerful.
  • 32. Music- Let Me Down Slowly Tevvez Remix Parallel Universe This is a category trend of transformation and workout related videos in general. It became popular because Zyzz used this song a lot, Zyzz is a bodybuilder who has a cult following since his death in 2011. Personally for me this song is a bit cheesy and I would prefer to use more original music even if it is a common song used in the type of video I'm making.
  • 34. Survey Planning • For my survey planning I want to get information on many areas but mainly those that I'm particularly curious about. I'm not bothered about age specifics; however, my target audience will be either people who are into physical fitness or are interested in getting into it. • Video aesthetics • Timings (intro etc) • More specific questions like, would you like in depth explanations on diet, rest and workout routines etc. I will be getting a mix of personal and random people to respond on my survey. I’m hoping to get a variety of opinions so I can develop my project so I can enjoy what I've made, as well as my target audience.
  • 35. Where I've sent the survey I put the survey on social media through both my story and sending it to people who I thought would be interested individually. My story was viewed by nearly 150 however I specified on the post only to do it if you're interested in bodybuilding to get more targeted responses to my planned target audience.
  • 36. Survey results HOW LONG SHOULD A INTRODUCTION BE? Starting with question 1, I asked how long an intro should be? I added this question because an introduction is something I had some peer positives and negatives from last project and I normally do about 10-20 seconds as my introduction .The research I found from this was that 50% o people prefer a quite short 5-10 second introduction. I quite like this as I like my edits quick as I think it helps with entertainment over a long time. I think this really helps with my later project as I can now base my introduction timings on this feedback. HOW LONG SHOULD A YOUTUBE DOCUMENTARY BE? Second question I asked how long my documentary should be. I specified ‘Youtube’ documentary as I’ve identified that is the style of documentary I am taking. It seems most people like the higher end of the options given, with a 10-15 minute duration. This is what I prefer as I normally have to shorten my projects, taking out stuff I would prefer to keep in. This will still be a hard task to accomplish as if the project is longer it can sometimes reduce in quality so I will try my best not to let that happen.
  • 37. Survey results HOW IN DEPTH SHOULD FOOTAGE/EXAMPLES BE? For question three I asked how in depth footage/examples should be. 50% said 30 seconds and 40% said 1 minute. I also agree footage examples should be short with 30 seconds being my most favourable time duration. I think I'm getting that sections of the video should be short as that is what the overall feedback says. WOULD A VOICOVER OF WHAT I’M DOING AND TECHNIQUE BE HELPFUL OVER FOOTAGE? I would’ve done a voiceover regardless of this question, however knowing that people would like that is helpful. The information I find in this which is the most interesting is that a lot of people want not too much voiceover. I agree with this, and I think adding interviews will help keeping this fresh so it's not just one voice the whole time.
  • 38. Survey results WOULD SHOWING FOOD PREP, RECIPES AND CALORIE TRACKING BE HELPFUL? Onto question 5, I asked would showing food preparation, recipes and calorie tracking be helpful? I'm glad people said yes as I am hoping large portions of my video will have this in. There is a lot I can talk about when it comes to everything I listed there as I am very interested about it so lots of possible content can be filmed around these topics. Do you like visually aesthetic content? I think this was a fairly obvious response however a big change to my documentary this time will be trying to make the video to be more aesthetic as I think it's nice to look at while watching. It's good to have this feedback as I think I'll need the motivation when I'm taking ages editing.
  • 39. Survey results WOULD A BRIEF TIMETABLE OF WORKOUTS AND WHEN TO HAVE REST DAYS BE HELPFUL? I'm happy with this response, I think there's a of of negligence when it comes to both workout routines and rest days. Some people have the mindset of ‘I'll take a rest day when I’m dead’. This is unhealthy and can often lead to fatality. There was a personal trainer called Scott Murray who died recently from having this same ideology, so I think it's good to talk about this. As you can see this topic is popular with the audience which is good for my product as I don’t want to add something that won't be interesting to people. WOULD AN EXPLANATION OF HOW BULKING AND DIET CAN BE EFFECTIVE?
  • 40. Survey Monkey ARE YOU INTERESTED ON THE EFFECTS OF THE GYM AND WORKING OUT PHYSICALLY AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY? It's good that yes was the answer for this as I think there's a lot of things you can talk about that goes untold. I’m going to do a lot of research so I can get the best possible information for these topics. DO YOU FIND SINCE WORKING OUT IT HAS IMPROVED YOUR MENTALITY? This is probably the most beneficial piece of research I got from this as its actual evidence of how it does affect people's mental health and I could even use it as part of my video.
  • 41. In person interview question ideas • What are some topics you would like to be seen/included in my documentary? • Do you often find the concept of bulking and cutting confusing, and how do people confuse you when explaining it? • Are there any topics in bodybuilding that come up more often than necessary? • Would you say the gym has changed your life? If so, say why.
  • 42. In person interview 1 Felix Huntington, 17 How has the gym changed your life? "I feel now since I have started going to the gym I feel more confident in myself because I look bigger and also people start noticing and praise is always nice. I also before I started going I lacked passion and a purpose and it has help me identify a sense of identity and community. I have made friends from the gym and I am much happier because of this change in my life." Do you think there are health benefits to starting working out? "Obviously there are known benefits it can have on your heart and fitness and stuff Jay, but not to many people know about how it effects your mental health and I think that’s an underrated part of it." How much do you know about the best scientific ways to diet and train? "Just the basics I haven’t actually tried to research a lot of the science behind what the best stuff is to eat or the best exercises and what not, so if that information was easy to access that would be very helpful man."
  • 43. In person interview 2 Lucy combes, 17 Do you think going to the gym has affected your mentality? Yes, before I didn’t view myself positively and going to the gym gave me confidence. Social confidence to be in a room of people I would have avoided just a few months ago. Self-confidence to go myself and feel strong and independent. And body confident as I feel stronger, and I feel confident in my skin increasingly more often at the gym wearing clothes a few months ago I would never have worn around people unless there was a big oversized hoodie hiding me. Would you say the gym has changed your life in any way of so how? Yes I would say it has definitely changed my life. Before I have struggled with body and self-image and thought the only way to feel comfortable and love myself was to harm or starve my body. However ,since going to the gym I’ve learnt to appreciate what I have, and I feel beautiful and confident. I love feeling strong knowing that I’ve put work in and am becoming healthier. Would you recommend the gym to anyone else? Definitely, it’s not about getting skinnier or bigger it’s also about getting a healthier body and mind. You often find people start going to the gym at difficult times in their lives or when they are unhappy within themselves. And you often find that they say that the gym helped them through it. It gives you something to focus on and achieve making you feel accomplishment and proud of yourself. It strengthens your mind and your body. I think what puts people off is the view the view that everyone in them has a particular aesthetic and if you don’t have it or are new they will judge you. However, you often find they are lovely and will talk to you and help and you’ll feel a lot more included than you think. Having taken someone there myself they ring me up and tell me what they did that day, and you can tell that they are proud and feel better in themselves. So yes, I would recommend the gym.
  • 44. In person interview analysis These interviews were conducted differently with the interviewee having a say in the questions as I wanted them to be happy with what they were saying. From both of these interviews there is a lot of positivity about the benefits of working out and how it changed their life through change in their body making them feel confident or just the ability to start feeling strong within yourself and in actual strength. I think both interviewees could do with some guidance still on diet and training so that’s when my video comes in.
  • 45. Topics I may need to do research on • Creatine • Training frequency • How hard you should train • best scientific backed exercises • Benefits of bulking
  • 46. Creatine BACKGROUND Creatine is one of the most popular nutritional ergogenic aids for athletes. Studies have consistently shown that creatine supplementation increases intramuscular creatine concentrations, can improve exercise performance, and/or improve training adaptations. Research has indicated that creatine supplementation may enhance post-exercise recovery, injury prevention, thermoregulation, rehabilitation, and concussion and/or spinal cord neuroprotection. A number of clinical applications of creatine supplementation have also been studied involving neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., muscular dystrophy, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease), diabetes, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, aging, brain and heart ischemia, adolescent depression, and pregnancy. The purpose of this review is to provide an update to the current literature regarding the role and safety of creatine supplementation in exercise, sport, and medicine and to update the position stand of International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) related to creatine supplementation. Creatine supplementation can help athletes recover from intense training. WHAT IS CREATINE? Creatine is a organic compound often found in many of the foods we consume (primarily red meats and seafood). You can also get creatine in powder or pill form. Creatine is one of the most researched sport substances in the world and many studies have found muscle building benefits and even health benefits. ‘In a normal diet that contains 1– 2 g/day of creatine, muscle creatine stores are about 60– 80% saturated. The most effective way to increase muscle creatine stores is to ingest 5 g of creatine monohydrate (or approximately 0.3 g/kg body weight).’ Conclusion Creatine monohydrate remains one of the few nutritional supplements for which research has consistently shown has ergogenic benefits. Additionally, a number of potential health benefits have been reported from creatine supplementation. Comments and public policy related to creatine supplementation should be based on careful assessment of the scientific evidence from well-controlled clinical trials; not unsubstantiated anecdotal reports, misinformation published on the Internet, and/or poorly designed surveys that only perpetuate myths about creatine supplementation. Given all the known benefits and favourable safety profile of creatine supplementation reported in the scientific and medical literature, it is the view of ISSN that government legislatures and sport organizations who restrict and/or discourage use of creatine may be placing athletes at greater risk—particularly in contact sports that have risk of head trauma and/or neurological injury thereby opening themselves up to legal liability. This includes children and adolescent athletes engaged in sport events that place them at risk for head and/or spinal cord injury. Arsene/Arsenal Arsene ensured players ate the right meals before games but the introduction of creatine was vital as it promotes muscle growth and body strength which improves performance on the pitch. Typically taken before training or a match, creatine also helps to increase endurance and reduce fatigue.
  • 47. Training frequency • I feel that for beginners, full body workouts 3-4 times per week are most optimal. This means that the volume is low as around 3-4 sets per body part are performed, however the frequency is quite high. The muscles won’t be used to any real stimulus or being stressed under load and so will be able to adapt from fairly low volume. As the stress placed on the muscle won’t have been of high intensity, the muscle will be able to recover quickly (even quicker if nutrition etc is on point too), so high frequency is useful in this instance as we can train the same muscle again as soon as it’s recovered. • As you become more experienced, an upper/lower split is now more useful. In this instance the upper body is trained one day (back, chest, shoulders, arms), then on the next, lower body is trained (hamstrings, calves, quads, glutes), then rest and repeat. This means that the volume is higher than the full body as the workouts are split into two, but the frequency is slightly lower. This is due to your body needing more of a stimulus to adapt to the stress put under it. • After this, a push/pull/legs split comes in handy. This means that a push session consists of chest, shoulders and triceps (any pushing movement), a pull session would be back and biceps, possibly shoulders and then the third session, legs, would be essentially the same as a ‘lower’ session in an upper/lower training split. Again, this means that as the body adapts to more and more stimulus, results are most likely going to slow after a while (one to two years), and more volume is needed. As more volume is added, frequency must be lowered otherwise recovery will ultimately start to suffer.
  • 48. Calorie surplus • Calorie Surplus: This means that you are consuming more calories in total throughout the day than your body is using. For example; if your body burns 2,000 calories throughout the day and you consume 2,200 calories, you will be in a 200 calorie surplus by the end of the day. Doing this consistently day after day will lead to weight gain.
  • 50. Clothing merchandise research Personally, I find more simplistic more appealing. This seems to be how the gym community also like things. With whites, blacks and reds being the most common variable. They don’t usually have any fancy patterns or designs, just a hardcore looking font for the title of whatever the brand is and that is it. I am also looking tank tops as well as t shirts. This will give me merchandise a uniqueness as I don't think they are that common to come across and is a classic gym-oriented item which relates with my project theme. I will most likely do these designs for my presentation area of work. My own research I went into my local gym around 5pm, and I did a quick tally of how many people wore clothing like the ones I have mentioned and 15/27 people wore this type of outfit. This gives me confidence that my research was a success.
  • 51. My documentary is like... • My documentary style will be a web based, YouTube style video. This is what from my research I have concluded. I intend not to make it like the conventional documentary you would see on Netflix or the BBC. My biggest inspirations have come from my existing products, there I have come to the agreement this is the style I will be undertaking in hope to making something I am truly proud with. Furthermore, I want to make something personal and enjoyable for me to do. This ideology will ensure I am happy, committed and determined throughout the whole project. I do believe doing this style may be deemed as not serious enough for a distinction, but I do think that would be an unfair assumption as this style is increasingly becoming more prevalent within society of media In today's world.
  • 52. Is YouTube now more popular than TV? Why do I mention this? Now coming to the realisation that a YouTube based video is what I will be taking inspiration from, it is now relevant to see if the market is there, and why it may be more reason to do a YouTube style over a more conventional documentary style. Opening statement 'YouTube is now more popular than traditional television in the United States, according to a new survey of 2,000 people from Adroit Digital'. This is from a source called 'Social media today', they conducted a study which shows that there is a drastic increase of YouTube watches than original Television viewers. Why is this happening? I believe this is happening for a number of reasons: attention spans are shorter; this is down to how quick media is nowadays. You can see anything you want in the matter of seconds. All from the comfort of your bed on your phone. Television shows and movies are out of touch, of course not all new shows and movies are like this, but a lot seem not to resonate with the younger audiences anymore. They will be watching a movie and get bored halfway through; depictions of young people are often far from the truth as well. Online media, is often made by the youth for the youth, this is why they like it so much. It seems more real and genuine themselves. Conclusion The market seems to be bigger than ever for a online styled documentary, and I believe doing this style will not only feel more natural for me, but also for my audience since this will be uploaded onto YouTube.
