Mood Board:
The images share a similar style of an old video or TV aesthetic
and are related to a TV background for example the screen cap
from an episode of Doctor Who or the TV static. Another aspect
the images also share is a common set of colour schemes, That
being a mixture of darker and lighter shades which make up the
vintage/retro video aesthetic. The images I have chosen will
influence my final product with the style and editing used within
the video which as stated before will be a blend of retro TV
footage and a 80’s synth aesthetic. The other images represent
the certain found footage shots I will be going for in terms of
scenes from the show, interviews and video I have taken of my
Doctor Who merchandise to make the whole thing a lot more
personal.
Mood Board Analysis
These are a list of Fonts that I could potentially be using throughout my project taken from sources like DaFont and other
sources, The first of which is Lemon Milk, this font is slightly simple but still has style to make it stand out as a title or
something similar to that effect – although it could have a negative effect of dating the visuals and possibly not connecting to
certain demographics. The next is Typewriter which is a more generic font but it is effective in its simpleness with the
typewriter aesthetic which adds to the vintage video style I am going for. The next is Doctor Glitch, this font looks
aesthetically pleasing and would allow me to add to the video effect I am going for in the video but I can only really see it
being used once or twice throughout the video. The fourth font is the official Doctor Who one which has its obvious uses to
fit in with using scenes from the show, however this font is very much associated with the product and could potentially
cause viewers to become disinterested if they are not fans of the show. The final font I could potentially use is a font called
Streamster which is far more stylised than any of the previously mentioned fonts with its mixture of sharp and smooth edges
which ties into the vaporware style I mentioned with music choices and when combined with the colour scheme, it should be
even more effective – however it could be too stylised to be able to be read by the audience.
Colour Scheme
I have chosen these colours to be a part of my colour scheme as they
accompany the vintage video tape aesthetic I am intending on going
with. The colour scheme contains a mixture of light and darker colours
which don’t particularly clash with one another and are intended to
enhance the aesthetic qualities of the video by making it be more
appealing to the viewer and keep them focused on the topics within the
video even if they aren’t completely invested in the video beforehand
which may make them more interested in it if the visuals of the video
are appealing to the eye. These colours will be implemented through
the visual editing and fonts throughout the video.
Styles:
For the style of the video I will be taking inspiration from
documentary filmmakers like Adam Curtis who use stock and
existing footage to compliment the narration, however I will be
using a variety of footage from Doctor Who edited with a vintage
video style and my own footage of my Doctor Who merchandise to
not only combat any potential copyright problems but also to make
it more visually appealing to the viewer and consistent with the
style of the opening. Along with this I am planning to accompany
these aspects of the of video with a selection of music from either
the show itself or Vaporwave as music from the series helps to stay
appropriate to the source whilst Vaporwave is relaxing and inviting
but I will need to test which tracks fit the tone I am going for the
best when I get to the post production stage of my video.
Structure
My video discuses representation in Doctor Who as I am interested in how
studios handle representation in the media they produce and how it can affect
pre-existing franchise. Asking the question of – Is representation genuine or is
it forced for financial gain? As for the aim of the video, I would like it to tell
the audience that the process of representation is not yet fair but it is getting
there. With growing up watching the show from the age of four, I feel
passionately about the series in general especially with the latest era
beginning soon with a female Doctor at the helm as I’ve been following the
recent controversies of feminist agendas ‘invading’ franchises and are
fascinated by both sides of the argument. Once seen, I would like my video to
make my audience to think about gender and ethnic minority representation
in the media as a whole and as Doctor Who has been running for 55 years , it
is a great vehicle to illustrate the changes. Through the video I video I will take
a neutral look (for the most part) at how representation is handled in the
media and more specifically the backlash from a female Doctor which is where
my own opinion will be integrated. The set up of the project will be employing
narration over found footage and scenes from the show as well as cutaways
to interviews where necessary which aid the topics being spoken about as
this is the best way to get the information across in an enjoyable way for the
viewer to ingest and follow.
“Just to be clear,
we are not
expecting any kind
of round of
applause or pat in
the back for that.
That is the minimal
level of
representation we
should have on
television and the
correct response
would be: ‘What
took you so long?’
not ‘We’re so
great.”

BBC Producers’ Guidelines
Following the BBC Producers’ Guidelines in regards to a factual production I ‘must strive
to be accurate with my information and said information must be well sourced,
presented in clean, precise language.’ I also must ‘strive to be fair and open minded as
the video will reflect all opinions and conflict of views, including my own but I won’t
promote a particular view or agenda.’ I will identify my sources so my audience can
judge their status for themselves.
– However an exception to British copyright law, fair dealing is
governed by Sections 29 and 30 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents
Act 1988 outlines three instance where fair dealing is a legitimate
defense:
The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 and Fair Use
The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, is the current UK copyright law. It
‘gives the creators of literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works the right to control
the ways in which their material may be used. The rights cover: Broadcast and public
performance, copying, adapting, issuing, renting and lending copies to the public. In
many cases, the creator will also have the right to be identified as the author and to
object to distortions of their work.’

Once seen, I would like my video to make my audience to think about gender and ethnic minority representation in the media as a whole and as Doctor Who has been running for 55 years , it is a great vehicle to illustrate the changes. Through the video I video I will take a neutral look (for the most part) at how representation is handled in the media and more specifically the backlash from a female Doctor which is where my own opinion will be integrated. The set up of the project will be employing narration over found footage and scenes from the show as well as cutaways to interviews where necessary which aid the topics being spoken about as this is the best way to get the information across in an enjoyable way for the viewer to ingest and follow.

  1. What materials and info do you need for your production? The core of a good factual project is doing the background work in terms of researching the topic and getting the right contributors. Use this and additional slides to collect this. Reference your sources.
