1. How effective is your
combination of your main
product and ancillary products?
Connor Ball
2. Introduction
All advertisement for music have clear links to the actual media product so it was important that
both my ancillary products and music videos obtained a consistent and related aesthetic so
recognizability is created for the audience. To create these links, I evaluated what in my music
video is able to get recognised and able to be transferred to the advertisement aspect of the
course.
3. Evaluation
The costume for the main character doesn’t change throughout the entire of the music video so I
decided to grasp on this opportunity to reference it in my ancillary products. The audience can see the
main character wearing the same Thrasher Skateboarding crewneck through the music product due to
the contradicting tones of the pure white in the logo juxtaposing the dense black of the crewneck.
Despite being a moving image in the music videos, when taking my photographs for magazine advert,
I decided to manipulate my shot composition to capture the Thrasher crewneck in a position where it is
abiding the rule of thirds. When manipulating the photograph in Photoshop, increased the brightness
and contrast to exaggerate the contradiction of light and dark tones, which made the logo stand out
even more. To apply a similar connection to my Digipack, I took a photography with medium-dark ISO
to have a darker aesthetic which enhanced the form and textures of the concrete floor. This
photograph was on the outside-left panel of the digipack so that the audience sees after initially
opening the Digipack. This links with my ancillary product as the all rely on use of photography to
create a more pleasant experience.
5. Evaluation
Another link that I decided to apply was location. The majority of the music video is shot within a
suburban, stereotypical English town where there are a particularly large amount of saturated
colours, emphasising a gritty aesthetic. To demonstrate a link to my ancillary products, I shot my
photographs for my magazine advert next to a door where the paint appears to be
decomposing accompanied by metal bars above it. As metal bars usually connote prison, the
gritty theme is reinforced. To exaggerate dereliction in my magazine advert, I began altering the
image in Photoshop where I added multiple layers of noise. This also allowed the photograph to
obtain a raw aesthetic which is a convention of the indie rock genre. To apply this to my digipack,
I decided to use the inside of the digipack as 1 single panoramic photograph of an abandoned
building with a the middle panel featuring the main character of the music video. The use of
location with the abandoned building in the digipack allowed a link of locations being created
between all of my products.
7. Evaluation
Furthermore, both my music video and ancillary products appeal to same target audience but in
different aspects. One way is through featured brands like Thrasher which is a popular hipster
brand for my target audience (unisex students aged between 16-25) allowing a connection to be
created with the media product. To make my magazine cover appeal to the same demographic, I
decided to enhance the use of photography like Two Door Cinema Club do for their existing
products. This was created though the use of manipulation in Photoshop hybridised with the use
of photography knowledge to create a compelling and intriguing photograph which would
appeal to my demographic. To transfer this approach to the Digipack, I used the same technique
of capturing visually pleasing photographs which is prominent for the initial first panel.
8. Evaluation
The first panel of my Digipack features a photograph of a door number saying 36, which is the
name of the album. Contrast was increased to make the reflections of the metal to be more
prominent as well as exaggerating the dereliction. The location of first panel photograph is was
taking in the same location as the photograph for my magazine advert. This allows links and
recognition to be created for both ancillary products.
10. Conclusion
The first panel of my Digipack features a photograph of a door number saying 36, which is the
name of the album. Contrast was increased to make the reflections of the metal to be more
prominent as well as exaggerating the dereliction. The location of first panel photograph is was
