Evaluation question 7
1. I have learnt that you need to meet the audience’s expectations,
so if you were a member of the audience and you were creating an
opening scene for someone of your age, what would you want it to
be like.
I have learnt that the effect of adding diegetic, non-diegetic,
pleonastic sounds and the use of a sound bridge on what is being
shown on the screen. My preliminary task product did not
contain any diegetic sounds whereas an example in my full
product where there is a diegetic sound is when ‘Tom Wells’ is
standing in the phone box and the phone box start ringing, this is
something that would not be unusual to hear if you were to see a
phone box.
I have learnt a lot about time management and that it is crucial to
manage your time effectively so you can get all the tasks
completed to a high standard.
2. I have learnt the differences, the advantages and
disadvantages of using the flip cam and the big camera.
The flip cam could be used for filming in small or tight
spaces and can be uploaded onto a PC or mac easier that
on a big camera. A big camera has a higher resolution and
there are more ways to film with it, for example you are
able to balance it on your shoulder and film, you could put
it onto a stand so that when you pan across or track a
moving object the camera is not wobbling, also there are
many more complications when uploading footage from
the big camera onto mac software as you need to rewind
the tape first and then open up the software you want to
upload it onto, for example Final Cut Express. Companies
often opt to use the big cameras because of the higher
resolution and general ease of the filming process. The flip
camera’s cost around £100-£150 whereas the big camera’s
cost a lot more money- could cost up to £3000-£4000 , this
could be the reason why the big production companies are
able to film using them because they are the best
equipment around at the moment.

3. • I learnt that when using final cut, you need to
make sure that the scenes are fluent and
continuous, this means that the match on action
has to be correct, for example if someone is
walking out of a door, you see the other side of the
door straight away as they exit, with no delay, we
used this example in our preliminary task, it can
be tricky to get these things right and can also be
very time-consuming. I have learnt that it is also
essential to perfect jump cuts when using within a
film, we have used jump cuts in our opening
scene towards the end when all three characters
meet ‘The Boss’. Another thing that I learnt was
from the YouTube video , that it is important to
hide things from the camera that you need to use
for safety, for example in this case, the rope
holding the car from falling off the cliff and be
careful when filming on separate days in the same
location, that the location needs to be exactly the
same as it was when recording took place before.

4. • When filming in certain environments there are certain things you need to
check before filming. I have learnt that you need to make sure that it is
appropriate to film in the place you want to film in and that you have access to
it, so for my production I needed to film in a train station, so I had to ask a
member of staff in the station if we could go down onto the platform in order
to shoot our footage.
• Another thing to consider is whether or not you are going to need to film
members of the public, some people might not want to be filmed or be in the
background of your film and this can cause some problems if you was just to
go ahead and film people without their consent, so it is always good to have
the courtesy to ask, which our group did.
• Before filming you will also need to make sure that there is no other
background sounds that is going to damage the quality of your scene, this can
be loud noises from building work, dogs barking or any other unwanted and
unrelated noises to your film.
5. • Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed creating an opening scene of a film, it has
been hard work but good fun and I feel that I have learnt a lot since
completing the preliminary task months ago.
• If I was to do this task again I think I would try and give myself more time on
the editing process of the production so that I can edit it to make it look even
better and so that even the very fine mistakes are no longer mistakes.
• I think I managed to edit the footage to a good standard so that the continuity
is fluent and the scene makes sense.
