Imagine that you are a farmer
living in a village on the coast
of India. For centuries, your
people have raised cotton
and made fabric. One day, a
ship arrives carrying Muslim
traders from far away. They
have brought goods and new
ideas! What are some ideas
you may learn from them?
BELL Ringer 9/3/15
• I can examine how Islam spread
through Arabia.
• I can distinguish between the
branches of Islam.
7.4 Describe the expansion of Muslim rule
through conquests and the spread of cultural
diffusion of Islam and the Arabic language.
• Muhammad's death in 632 brought on a crisis!
• How would Islam survive without the
leadership of the Prophet?
• How do you think the Muslims felt at
this point in time? Discuss with your
group.
MUHAMMAD’S
DEATH• Muhammad had not named a
successor to him or how to
choose one after he died. Panic
swept through the region.
• A new caliph (a successor of
Muhammad) would need to be
named.
PARTY TIME:
Who should be picked as caliph?
ABU BAKR
(The first caliph)
• Muslims controlled most of the Arabia
when Abu Bakr died in 634.
• The next two Caliphs began to quickly
spread Islam and conquered all of Persia.
• By 661, Muhammad's successors had
spread Islam by nearly four times, both
through conquest and treaty.
• By 750 the Muslim empire stretched about
5,000 miles.
•How did the issue of
choosing leaders divide
the Muslim community?
10 minutes
End
• Closely read pages 362-363 in
the textbook
• Re-read sections which define
important words or details
