2. Global Industry Overview
• The construction industry is
an integral part of the
economic and social
development of countries
around the world
• The industry accounts for
approximately 9% of world
gross domestic product
(GDP)
• It remains a major driver of
economic growth in many
developing countries
3. Global Industry Overview
Prior to 2010, the global
construction industry was
dominated by activities in the
United States of America
(USA) and other developed
countries including Germany,
Japan and France.
4. Global Industry Overview
The dynamics changed in
2010 when China overtook
the USA to become the
largest construction market in
the world with seven (7)
Chinese firms accounting for
52% of the global industry’s
revenue in 2011.
5. Nigerian Industry Overview
• The Construction industry
in Nigeria is one of the
largest in Africa.
• Over the last decade, the
industry has experienced
considerable growth largely
driven by increased
spending on infrastructure
by the Nigerian government
following the higher
proceeds from rising crude
oil prices.
6. Nigerian Industry Overview
• The boom in the real estate
market has contributed to
the rising demand for
residential housing and an
increase in building
construction in major cities
across the country
Nigeria’s construction sector accounts for
1.4% of its GDP
• The Nigerian construction
industry is essential to the
social and economic
transformation of the
country.
7. Nigerian Industry Overview
There are two major areas of this industry in Nigeria:
1. Infrastructure Construction
Infrastructure spending is a major component of capital
expenditure in the budgets of both the Federal
Government of Nigeria and the various state
governments
The Nigerian government is a major player in this
segment, operating as a regulator, client as well as a
contractor through the Federal Ministry of Works.
8. Nigerian Industry Overview
2. Building Construction
The building construction segment includes the
construction of residential and non-residential buildings
such as schools, high rise buildings, hospitals, office
space, recreational parks and housing units.
This segment is highly fragmented with players from both
the public and private sector – i.e. property development
companies, mortgage companies, construction
companies and the Nigerian government through its
ministries, departments and agencies .

10. Nigerian Industry Overview
1. Inadequate enforcement of
the existing enabling building
regulations
7. Financing problems
6. Inadequate supply of
power (Electricity)
2. Absence of sound
budget planning and
control
Challenges
Facing the
Industry
5. Unstable prices of raw materials
3. Inadequate skilled
Manpower
4. Unavailability and high cost of
raw materials
11. My Role in the Industry
Engage in a Business Development/Project
Management Consultant –role.
with my undergraduate
background in building
technology, Masters in
Management and few years
of experience and
exposure, coming into this
industry in the role would
help proffer innovation and
solutions needed for
improvement and growth of
the Construction industry.
12. My Role in the Industry
Apply training and knowledge from
experience and Masters Program
With training and
continuous self
development in the
construction field, most of
the challenges faced in the
industry can be curbed. E.g.
An absence of proper
planning and inadequate
man power is mostly due to
the incapability of the
Project Manager/Business
development manager.
13. My Role in the Industry
Eliminate or reduce the risk of financial
problems in the industry.
With relevant work
experience in the
financial services sector
I will be able to adopt
the processes and skills
to design a proper and
adequate work program
for effective planning
and execution of
projects.
