– Construction sector and construction activities are considered to
be one of the major sources of economic growth, development
and economic activities.
– Construction and engineering services industry play an
important role in the economic uplift and development of the
country. It can be regarded as a mechanism of generating the
employment and offering job opportunities to millions of
unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled work force.

4. – It includes hospitals, schools, townships, offices, houses and
other buildings; urban infrastructure (including water supply,
sewerage, drainage); highways, roads, ports, railways, airports;
power systems; irrigation and agriculture systems;
telecommunications etc.
– It deals with all economic activities directed to the creation,
renovation, repair or extension of fixed assets in the form of
buildings, land improvements of an engineering nature.

industry
– What differentiate the construction industry from other industries
is that its projects are large, built on-site, and generally unique.
Time, money, labor, equipment, and, materials are all examples of
the kinds of resources that are consumed by the project.
– Projects begin with a stated goal established by the owner and
accomplished by the project team. As the team begins to design,
estimate, and plan out the project, the members learn more about
the project than was known when the goal was first established.
This often leads to a redefinition of the stated project goals.
6. Types of construction-
Public & Private
– Construction projects are carried out by the
public sector or the government and also by
private sector.
– The projects undertaken by government are
much bigger and involve outlays, and theses are
of national importance and meant to direct the
overall economic development of the country.
7. – For example , a river valley project involving construction of
dams, barrages, irrigation and navigation canals, aqueduct,
and generation of hydro-electric power is a huge project
which takes long time to complete and require large sum of
money.
– Construction of steel plants, power plants, national highway,
long span bridge etc also urban renewal scheme, big housing
projects or establishing new town are also generally carried
out by the government.
– Many of these jobs are of specialized in nature and hence
need specialized contractors.
8. – In private sectors , the job is normally undertaken only by
when budget is ready and there are no quotations based on
“percentage less than the scheduled price”
– The rates quoted are workable and once stated these are
normally finished on time.

10. Pakistan Construction
industry
– The construction industry in Pakistan is second largest industry
and is already mounting on the back of increasing infrastructure
activities, rising demand of houses and construction recovery.
– It provides job about 6.1% of total employed labor force or
2.43milion persons.
– Per capita consumption of cement in Pakistan is lowest among
developing countries i.e 72kgs as compared to 603kgs in Japan,
600kgs in Thailand, 405kgs china, 261kgs USA and 99kgs india.
11. – All in all, 2016 outlook for construction sector is positive as all
the relief measures for builders and developers would give a
significant boost to the multi-billion dollar industry.
– GDP From Construction in Pakistan increased to 287569 PKR
Million in 2016 from 254251 PKR Million in 2015. GDP From
Construction in Pakistan averaged 231140.73 PKR Million
from 2006 until 2016, reaching an all time high of 287569 PKR
Million in 2016 and a record low of 186380 PKR Million in
2006.

13. – Economy of Pakistan has continued the growth momentum as
the GDP growth reached to 5.28 percent in 2016-17 which is
the highest in 10 years.
– Agriculture accounts for 19.53 percent of GDP and employed
bulk of the total work force. The crops subsector comprises of
37.22 percent of agriculture sector and is the basic driver of
growth of the agriculture sector as well as GDP on the whole.
14. – Construction is considered as one of the potential
components of industrial sector in the economy of Pakistan.
– Construction as a sub sector contributes 13.13 percent in
industrial sector and in GDP its share is 2.74 percent against
the share of 2.65 percent last year; it absorbs 7.31 percent of
labor force.
